And the Winner WCHR Hunter of the Year goes to Mindful LEXINGTON, KY – indful, shown throughout the 2014 competition year under dual ownership of Kensel LLC and Larry Glefke, has been named the 2014 World Championship Hunter Rider Hunter of the Year and recipient of the WCHR Peter Wetherill Cup. The award will be presented during the $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular on Feb. 14 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. “He is truly one of the finest athletes I have ever seen and one of the easiest horses to prepare because he always wants to win,” said Selma Garber of Kensel LLC. “To be in the company of the past winners … it’s quite an honor. I am without words, I am so thrilled.” The 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding began his career as a hunter in 2014, making the transition from the jumper ring. Kensel LLC and Larry Glefke purchased the gelding from Devon Craig midway through the 2014 show season and Mindful quickly began to dominate the High Performance Hunter and Regular Conformation sections with professional Kelley Farmer. Mindful was named the High Performance Hunter Champion at prestigious shows including Devon, the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, the Washington International Horse Show and the National Horse Show. Additionally, Mindful and Farmer were named the Grand Hunter Champions at the Washington International Horse Show and were recipients of the 2014 Rave Review Challenge Trophy and the 2014

Protocol Trophy. Mindful was also named the USEF 2014 High Performance Hunter Horse of the Year. Continuing on his winning streak, Mindful also won USHJA International Hunter Derbys nationwide. With 12 International Hunter Derbys under his belt in the 2014 season, Mindful ended up in the top 10 on the Horse Money Won list, ranking sixth, and helped Farmer maintain the top spot of the Rider Money Won list. Farmer won her first $5,000 World Championship Hunter Rider Professionals Finals at the 2014 Capital Challenge Horse Show aboard Mindful, an elusive win for Farmer in previous years. “If any horse deserves such an award, he does,” said Glefke. “I’ve never had a great horse that is as easy, as kind or as straightforward as this horse... He has the greatest work ethic of any animal I’ve ever had the luxury of being around, and I think Kelley feels the same way... He’s a dream horse; he really is.” HCD

From the

Aspectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff

At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION— Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands

t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but I just don’t get it. If, while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps not-so-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors.

Grandstand should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course. COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump.

FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

week he was ninth. He was a jumper and just started doing the hunters.” Samantha Schaefer of Westminster, Md., placed both third and fourth. Schaefer was third riding her own Stallone, with scores of 87 and 82 -- moving up from last week’s fifth place finish, and fourth with her horse Classified, with scores of 84 and 83.

AMANDA STEEGE AND ZIDANE WIN HITS OCALA JANUARY FESTIVAL $5,000 DEVOUCOUX HUNTER PRIX Amanda Steege of Bedminster, N.J., topped the HITS Ocala January Festival $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix Jan. 24 on the Dutch Warmblood Zidane, who is owned by Susan Darragh of Orefield, Pa. The consistent jumping by Zidane put him at the top of the leader board with matching first- and second-round scores of 85. On the previous Saturday, Zidane and Steege had the highest first-round score of 89, but a little playfulness in the second round cost them the win and they placed second. Exhibitors enjoyed ringside refreshments provided by sponsor Devoucoux as they watched competition over the course designed by Tucker Williams, of Cleveland, Texas, which included a jump set at the bottom of the bank on the outside course. OCALA – an. 31 was a great day for Amanda Steege and Zidane, owned by Susan Darragh, who took home a $1,500 prize for first place in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix. It was their second win in as many weeks. They scored an 85.5 in the first round and an 87 in the second in their most recent victory, propelling them to the top of the leaderboard. Steege's student, Kimberly Maloomian, of Needham, Mass., also won the $1500 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix that same day. Hunters were the focus on the Outside Course at HITS Ocala with the two special classes: the $1,500 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix and the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix. These classes are qualifiers for the $250,000 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix Final and the $500,000 Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final held at HITS Saugerties, N.Y., during the HITS Championship in September. The courses on Jan. 31, designed by Doug Russell of Ocala, included jumps up and down a hill, bending lines and an option on the approach to the first jump in Round 2. Steege, of Bedminster, N.J., said she wants to be among the top 20 riders in the year-end standings so she can ride two horses in the $500,000 Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final at HITS Saugerties in September. So far, she has won two of three HITS Ocala $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix this season after placing second in Week 1. She said, “I’m really excited about the changes HITS made for the ‘specs’ for 2015 that are allowing the top 20 to ride two horses in the Diamond Mills $500,000 Final for a few reasons: First of all, I think making that change is going to encourage riders to show in that class more, but also will encourage hunter riders to ride their best horses,” Steege said. “The possibility of riding two will really motivate people to be more successful on a weekly basis, and I think it will make it a more exciting competitive class.” A close second in the Hunter Prix went to Patty Stovel of Georgetown, Ky. riding Winner HS, owned by Peggy Jones of Culpeper, Va., and trained by Sandra Ruiz. Stovel and Winner HS scored an 86 in the first round and an 85 in the second to earn $1,000. She said after the class, “We are getting closer. Last

last three years. She also shows him in the High Performance Division and the International Hunter Derbys. Darragh imported him as a 2-year-old and rides him herself in the Modified Adult Hunters. Steege was second last year at the HITS Championship and third in 2013 on Balou in the $500,000 Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final. She said she is very excited about the new format this year, which allows the top 20 riders to show two horses in the Final. “As a rider who has competed in this class for the last few years,” she said, “I am really excited because I would like to do Zidane and Balou in the Finals. I think a lot of people will show in this class more consistently to get the opportunity to do two in the Finals.” Second place in the Devoucoux Hunter Prix went to Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, N.C., riding Caroline Russell Howe’s Caramo with scores of 81.5 in the first round and 84 in the second. Chopping said, “He’s a wonderful horse – he’s a pro. There’s no green in him, ever. There’s no figuring it out. I just try to do the best job I can getting him to the ring. His owner is on the phone all the time with his breeder in Denmark. If you’re 16 years old he can teach you a lot and if you are 50 years old and get to ride – hey, they’re not all like that.” Third place went to Classified, owned and ridden by Samantha Schaefer of Westminster, Md., with scores of 84 and 81.

Fourth place went to Aaron Vale of Williston, riding Donald Stewart’s Dress Balou, the winner of the 2014 Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final. This was only the third class Dress Balou had shown in since his big win last fall. He warmed up in a Level 0 and Level 1 Jumper class and went to the ring. Vale said he was “thrilled” with the horse’s performance. HCD

imberly Maloomian, riding her mother Terry Maloomian’s Urlala, had a triumphant return to the winner’s circle in her first Hunter Prix since winning the $250,000 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix Final last September. Maloomian and Urlala won the $1,500 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix Jan. 31 with scores of 82 and 84. Riders in the top 20 in the year-end standings for the $1,500 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix can also ride two horses in the $250,000 Platinum Performance Hunter Prix Final Maloomian, who trains with Amanda Steege, said, “Urlala was originally purchased for my Mom to do the two-foot division. She may not be the fanciest horse that I have, but she’s the nicest. You always know when you are standing at the in-gate that you are going to jump all the jumps – she’s not going to spook at anything and it’s such a nice feeling.

Derek Petersen and Cassevel Top the Brook Ledge Welcome at HITS Ocala

The Welcome OCALA – erek Petersen of Archer, Fla., riding his and Maddie Skimming’s Cassevel, came out on top in the $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome on Wednesday at HITS Post Time Farm after placing second in the same class during the first week. The Brook Ledge Welcome included two combinations set in the course designed by Foster, and they proved to be a challenge for the competitors: Only two, Petersen with Cassevel and Manuel Torres on Pluto, negotiated the course with no jumping faults and went on to the jump-off. fence, and with a time of 42.895 seconds, left the door open for Torres of Waterford, Va., and Pluto, who is owned by Torres’ Santa Catalina Farm. But a refusal at a combination and resulting time faults put Torres in second place with seven total faults and a time of 57.238. Seven had four faults in the first round. Lisa Goldman, from Hawthorne Woods, Ill., and her Rocs to Riches, an 8-year-old who will be moving up to the Grand Prix level, were the fastest combination, but they placed third at 67.816 seconds. Sam Pegg, riding Michael Pegg’s Shaia De Macheco, was fourth at 69.231, and Andrea Torres Guerreiro, riding Santa Catalina Farm’s Victoria, rounded out the top five in 72.545 seconds. HCD

ome people are a natural fit for their profession. There’s the adage that if one enjoys their job, they never have to do a day’s work. And if that’s the case, Solo Show Stable’s Harold Chopping, a regular on the Ocala HITS circuit for the past five years, is one lucky man. The horseman based in Vass, N.C., has represented Canada in three Nations Cups and was the Olympic alternate for the 1992 summer games in Barcelona. It was the Grand Prix rider’s parents who began fostering a love of riding in the future professional at an early age on the family farm in Ontario. “My parents had my sister and I involved in riding, probably from the time I was 6 years old,” said Chopping. “I was really enthusiastic about it from the start. When I was a kid, I liked horses as much as anything.” Chopping had a steady diet of exposure to the sport when he was young as he would have the opportunity to watch Grand Prix riders compete at the highest level. “We went to the Royal Winter Fair,” said Chopping. “We’d get tickets and go a couple of nights and watch the show jumping.”

If you’re a little kid I think that’s what would get a kid turned onto the sport.” The local horse shows in Ontario gave Chopping the playing hockey like we all did in Canada, the opportunity to watch an NHL game put the whole thing into perspective. Harold Chopping Chopping. “So, when you were finished showing your pony, it wasn’t unusual to find yourself walking over to the Grand Prix ring and watching the Sunday Grand Prix. It was more accessible. You saw all the guys jumping their horses and having a good time. It was exciting.” Chopping’s first junior jumper played a major role in teaching him lessons that would last a lifetime. Kids always seem to learn the most from the good horses, those horses with a little experience, the ones with something to offer, and it’s those who are the best teachers, he said. “I had a jumper, a thoroughbred I leased called ‘Nemesis’ that had jumped on the Canadian team at some horse shows with Terry Leibel and that was my first junior jumper,” said Chopping. “I think I was about 15 and the horse was about the same age.” The rider would grow in confidence thanks to the bond he would form with Nemesis, who proved to be nothing like his name. “You could try things, make a mistake and become really confident when you realize things went as well as they possibly could,” said Chopping. “You’re given the opportunity to try, you make a little mistake and the horse would never hold it against me. He would always try and help you. He was safe, too. When I did something terribly wrong, he’d know when to say ‘oops’ and ‘no.’ That was a fantastic horse.”

20 Horse Capital Digest •February 13, 2015

The future professional honed his skill set while riding as a junior with John Weir’s Joker’s Hill Stable in King City, Ontario. “They directed that whole thing beautifully,” said Chopping. “So I was around really good people, which made it safe and fun. You had some amount of success. It kept you coming back, and as a kid to be exposed to the upper end of the sport, when you could watch it, and even in the barn where I rode there were those people competing at a high level, Grand Prix horses and all. You had it all around you. They just taught you how to do it, and it was fun.” A father’s support and encouragement would play a large role in Chopping’s development as a horseman. “My dad did whatever he could to make sure that I had one nice horse,” said Chopping. “We had a family farm and a lot of other stuff to ride. He collected everything, so we had horses of all varieties. We jumped a lot of horses.” The opportunity to compete at the international level couldn’t have been achieved by Chopping without having quality horses to ride. “Sometimes you fall into things like that,” said Chopping. “I guess we were very enthusiastic about trying to compete at that level. I was lucky for sure to have a couple of nice horses, even at the same time that could jump at a high level.” If timing is everything, Chopping had the good fortune to be competing at the right mo-

ment. Canada had its own World Cup League, providing the young rider with the opportunity to compete and jump bigger classes. “Looking back, it would have to be less competitive than where it is now, with the whole North American World Cup League,” said Chopping. “We didn’t have many spots to go to the finals. I think it was four a couple of times and then three. But it gave you a chance to go to a championship when you did have horses that were competitive. “It allowed me to go to the horse shows and compete in the places where I would have had a chance to qualify for the national team,” he said. “Also at that time they had the international teams at the indoor shows.” The Nations Cup teams proved to be an invaluable experience for Chopping, providing him with a chance to compete on an international stage without traveling overseas or traversing the breadth of the continent. The rider considers himself lucky to have been given the opportunity to participate in such a prestigious international competition. “I was lucky to be doing it at the time,” said Chopping. “A young person could get a chance to jump in a Nations Cup and to compete in that format for their country. You springboard to that believing you could do it and then pursue other horses for that.” Chopping has seen the changes in the sport over the past few decades, and feels fortunate to still be involved with the discipline that has

been a part of his daily routine since his early youth. The horseman has been able to successfully make the transition from one era to another, making the necessary adjustments to remain competitive. Today’s market place dictates a very different environment. “The horses competing at the highest level are crazy expensive,” said Chopping. “I don’t own any of them myself. You can buy young ones, but certainly these Grand Prix horses at the highest level are a different thing. These are horses that we are not buying, selling and dealing. They’re beyond that. We have groups of people owning horses, that’s part of the business now, and that’s the way you have to do it.” The horseman derives pleasure from starting horses, introducing them to exhibiting competitively in the show ring at the latter stages of their 4-year-old year and at age 5. “It’s really a blast,” said Chopping. “Sometimes you will get horses that will move up, go the whole distance and jump at a higher level. I don’t feel like I’m working because you’re doing what you love. And if you’re lucky enough to get to this point, where you’ve been around long enough, you start to realize this is really something. I couldn’t have picked a better thing for me to do.” There’s always the challenge of having enough depth in the barn, and Solo Show Stables works diligently to make sure there’s enough talented and quality show jumpers and show hunters to exhibit.

“We try and start younger ones and sell love it that much, and they’re so particular them,” said Chopping. “So, it’s not like they about every little detail. I think the only way to come and the goal is for them to stay and do be competitive is to be totally dedicated to it.” Kendra Bullington’s Basje is Chopping’s their whole careers here. Every so often we’re lucky enough to have an owner who would Grand Prix horse, a 9-year-old Dutch Warmlike to compete a horse for a couple of seasons blood, who will exhibit later in the Ocala HITS before something gets sold. Campbell, of Georgetown, Ky, went secondto-last in the jump-off. Only two riders had jumped clear to that point. Campbell and her Holsteiner/Dutch Warmblood cross finished clean to collect the winning check for $7,500. “I’ve had ‘Rocky’ nine years now. We actu-

She aims to jump Rocky W in the Great American $1 Million at HITS Post Time Farm on March 23. “He’s 17 years old now – I really want to jump in a big class with him,” she said. Wannick WH, owned by Candy Tribble and Windsor Show Stable, and ridden by Christine McCrea of East Windsor, Conn., posted the first clear round of the jump-off. Their time of 40.598 held the lead until Campbell rode, putting them in second place to earn $5,500. Third place went to the only other clear jump-off round, posted by Dorothy Douglas of Flower Mound, Texas, on S&L Farms’ S&L Elite with a time of 40.635. The course was designed by Danny Foster of Ontario, Canada. Mary Goldman’s Centurion B, ridden by Lisa Goldman of Hawthorn Woods, Ill., had the fastest time of 36.542 in the jump-off but failed to clear a rail at Fence 11, dropping them to fourth place. HH Dauphin, owned by Woodrun and ridden by Laura Linback of Mundelein, Ill., finished with four faults and a time of 40.660 to take fifth place. HCD

Summarizing

HITS

ond that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner.

The following is a brief summary of Show HITS will host the $200,000 Jumping, the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup and Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ opportunities for community participation.

HITS Post Time Farm | Ocala, Fla. • Friday, Feb. 13

SHOWJUMPING 101: Jumper classes, like a Nations Cup Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for a jumping error. This is how it breaks down: A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a secDerek Peterson aboard Eddy Money during the 2014 HITS Circuit

ABOUT THE FURUSIYYA FEI NATIONS CUP™ • It is the most prestigious Show Jumping series for national teams in the World • HITS will host the only U.S. North American Region qualifier for the Finals in Barcelona, Spain. • Features a team competition with four riders per team • HITS will invite nine International teams • The Furusiyya Nations Cup will consist of two jumping rounds: 1) The top 3 riders of the six best-placed participating teams (after the first round) ride the second course. 2) Each team’s lowest score for each round is dropped. Winning team has lowest score from faults. • The Furusiyya Nations Cup boasts a $200,000 prize purse • The FEI events span five days, Feb. 11-15, with classes, including: $34,000 FEI Jumper Prix Thursday, Feb. 12 $34,000 FEI Jumper Classic Saturday, Feb. 14 $150,000 FEI Grand Prix Sunday, Feb. 15

Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup

NATIONS CUP

Teams drawn For International Test OCALA – riday’s Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup, presented by Edge Brewing Barcelona, have been announced and the event, set for Friday, at HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala, figures to be a highly competitive affair. This event is the only official United States qualifier for the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Final, which will be held in Barcelona, Spain later this year. The HITS Organizing Committee, in conjunction with the USEF, invited select nations to partake in the international show jumping event. Each country is permitted to bring four riders plus one alternate and one Chef d’Équipe or Team Coach. “The field of riders is impressive and the prize purse is remarkable,” said HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri. “Knowing the horse-sport enthusiasts of Marion County, the crowd will be electric. It’s going to be a historic afternoon of show jumping.” In each round of the two-round competition, the highest score per team will be dropped and only three scores will count per round for each team. The country finishing with the lowest cumulative two-round score will be declared the winner. In the case of a tie, a jump-off against the clock will be held to determine the winner. General admission tickets for the FEI Nations Cup™ are $10 and available in advance through OcalaTix.com ($2 processing fee applies). Tickets may also be purchased in person at the Horse Show Office at HITS Post Time Farm or by calling 352867-0508. Tickets will also available at the gate the day of the event. Day VIP passes are also available by pre-order for $100 per person. They include ringside seating with a deluxe crudité table, international cheese display and private cash bar. For Day VIP, call the phone number listed above. HCD

Horses must arrive only between the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Off-hours arrival must obtain permission from show management by calling 352-620-2275 24 hours prior to arrival.

An Event Participation Declaration Form is available in this prize list and at HitsShows.com. A new Event Participation Declaration Form must be filed each time the horse enters the property. Horses stabled off the property that “ship-in” on a regular basis must comply with this requirement as well as additional requirements noted on the following pages. These documents must be filed in the Show Office before any competition numbers will be issued. In addition, random checks for equine health requirements will occur. Be sure to keep a copy of all of your horse’s equine health requirements in an easily accessible spot (in your tack room or tack trunk, truck or trailer) to ensure you can comply with this requirement. The results on all required papers must indicate the horses’ registered (show) name. Any horse not accompanied by these documents will be directed to the Show Veterinarian to obtain the required documents and/or vaccinations, and/or will be placed in quarantined stabling until the proper documents are obtained. Any horse showing signs of fever/illness/stress is subject to examination by HITS officials and/or the Show Veterinarian, who may, at their sole discretion, place the horse in quarantined stabling or take further action if deemed necessary. See Rules and Regs for more information, and visit HitsShows.com for the most up to date requirements. HCD
