From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff

I

t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but I just don’t get it. If, while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps notso-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 27

ESI PHOTO

Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part

of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

Grandstand COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump. FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a

ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course.

ures It Out Investing Hard Work and Time Pays Off in the Ocala Week VIII $50,000 Purina Animal Nutrition Grand Prix. “At the beginning of the [HITS] circuit, I don’t know if he s Grand Prix jumpers readied for the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix on March 27, they competed was just out of practice, but he’s just kind of got it all together on Sunday, March 13, for blue-ribbon victories in in the last few weeks,” said Fenney of MTM Reve du Paradis. A competitive field of 40 competed over a challenging, quick Week VIII of the Ocala Winter Circuit. track set by Florencio Hernandez of Mexico City. The 16-effort Purina Animal Nutrition Grand Prix Patience, persistence, a positive attitude and talent paid off course contained three double combinations all with difficult for Tracey Fenny of Flower Mound, Texas, as she pulled off her approaches that required skillful planning, and perhaps a little first Grand Prix win of the season with MTM Reve du Paradis bit of luck, to clear. Only three riders were able to jump first-round clears within the tight time allowed of 81 seconds to advance to the jump-off with many with only one rail down. The most troublesome spot was the vertical-vertical combination at 7A-B, where Fenney explained the approach to the combination, going around the Liverpool at Fence 4, added to the difficulty. “A lot of horses got their eye on the liverpool and it distracted them,” said Fenney. “A lot of horses had [the combination] down.” Riders attempting to make up time opted to turn inside the island of flowers to the last jump, but that resulted Tracey Fenney and MTM Reve Du Paradis after winning the Purina Animal Nutrition Grand Prix. in several heart-breaking rails for those who took the chance. $50,000 Ring Power Grand Prix The first to make it to the jump-off Place Horse Owner Rider Prize round, and eventual class winner, was 1 MTM Reve Du Paradis MTM Farm Tracey Fenney $15,000 the 23rd rider to tackle the course, 2 Conthendrix Andre Thieme Andre Thieme $11,000 Fenney and MTM Reve du Paradis, 3 Quite Dark 2 Westwind Equine Training Center Haley Gassel $6,500 owned by MTM Farm. to go clear in round one was 2014 Great American Million winner Andre Thieme riding his own Conthendrix. Fenney and MTM Reve du Paradis were first to return. They opted for a long distance to the first oxer, then left out a stride to 7A, galloping the rest of the course. They turned inside the flower island to the narrow jump and cheers emanated from the crowd as they flew to the final fence. Fenney was taking a chance laying down such a fast trip, and had the last rail to finish with four faults in a time of 42.110, leaving Fenney to wait in the wings to see how the other two riders fared. Gassel, a relative newcomer to the Grand Prix scene, took to the course with confidence and precision against a seasoned field of Grand Prix winners. Two rails, however, at 7A and another at the narrow, earned them eight faults in a time of 43.413 and a third-place finish. Thieme just had to go clear for the win, and he set a slow and careful pace, looking like he was on the way to the victory. He opted to turn inside the flower island to the narrow jump to be sure he was within the time allowed but, unfortunately, Conthendrix had the rail, and they finished with four faults for second place in a time of 51.312, sealing the win for Fenney. Taking a chance in riding the course quickly proved to be quite the payoff for Fenney. “I thought the course was quite difficult and the time was really tight,” said Fenney. “In the jump-off I always ride for the win so I go as fast as I can. We are fortunate that we won with that last rail.”

ting the Great American Time to Beat in 30.732, which held on through 14 other riders for the win. “Kimberly is a great direction-follower, she has a background in Western and reining and she knows how to sit back and turn,” said Vale. “I told her to jump the first jump, kick for two strides and then turn. A lot of [riders] turned too quickly, and then they either didn’t have a spot, or didn’t have the momentum to clear the combination. Kimberly followed directions perfectly, and that turn, and then a gallop, holding the buckle to the final jump, got them the win.” The next six riders in the jump-off had faults with Robin Swinderman of Morriston, riding Cliff II for Meadowwood Farm LLC, clocking in at 29.444 as the fastest of the four faulters to take fifth place. Next to jump clear was Gabrielle Calvert of Doyleston, Pa., aboard Cat Woman, owned by Daniel White. Having the opportunity to watch others, Calvert made an inside cut to the homestretch line, opting to zig away from the jump, then back in to give her horse the opportunity to see it clearly, resulting in a split-second of additional time as they crossed the timers in 31.199 to step into and hold onto second place. Following Calvert was Monica Hanks riding Finnley 5. They galloped through the timers clear, but in a time of 33.314 to finish in third place. Anna Whitman on Calino-GZ, owned by Mindy Whitman, used the same route and finished with a clear round in 33.529 for fourth.

S.A. COMUNALE ADULT JUMPER CLASSIC HITS Ocala Week VIII riders battled for the blue in the $1,000 S.A. Comunale Low Adult Jumper Classic, which took place in the Grand Prix Ring at HITS Post Time Farm on Sunday, March 13. As the trips went by, each round proved faster and faster but it was Amber Moss of Williston, riding Adonis for Traudi Miller-Moss, who topped the field to take home the win. Bernardo Cabral from Portugal designed a course of 13 efforts set from .90 to 1.0 meters including two combinations. Ten riders jumped first round clears to advance to an immediate jump-off, where six jumped clear again. First to contend for the jump-off was Marissa Kinally from Hull, Mass., riding Silko for Mindy Whitman. They clocked in with a cool, clear round in 34.964 to take the lead and the eventual fifth place.

Following was Texas Tea, owned by Michael Kirby and ridden by Tallulah Kassell of New York City. Texas Tea was MidCircuit .90-meter champion at HITS Ocala, and it showed when he galloped, turned and angled across fence 5 to the finish, clocking in at 30.538 to take the short-lived lead from Kinally and the eventual second-place prize. Amy Frailey of Salem, N.H., was the next clear in a time of 34.391 on her own Kilkenny Aragorn. That trip would be good enough for a final third-place finish. Adonis and Moss followed, squeaking out Texas Tea with a fault-free 30.481, topping the leaderboard by a tenth of a second. Adonis would hold onto the lead for the win. Jackie Arakelian of Winchester, Mass., and Fleetwood Mac, owned by Ann Dotoli, were the final clear jump-off round in a time of 34.951 to slide into fourth place. HCD

Haley Gassel and Quite Dark 2 on their way to their $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix win

16 Horse Capital Digest • March 18, 2016

Sticking to Risky Plan Bags SmartPak Thieme and multiple Grand Prix winners Marilyn Little and Tracey Fenney. Florencio Hernandez of Mexico designed a first-round course lite competition commenced during Week VIII of the Ocala Winter Circuit with the $25,000 SmartPak Grand of 15 jumping efforts for the field of 36 starters, of which jumped clear in the first rounds. Ten jumped clear rounds in the jump-off Prix in Ocala Horse Properties Stadium. Hayley Gassel, 23, of Lenoir City, Tenn., riding her own Quite and every possible option was tried to find the fastest route that Dark 2, with the expert guidance of trainer David Jennings, exe- could lead to the blue-ribbon. First to go clear in the jump-off was Williston’s Vale, riding cuted her plan perfectly to win a jump-off against a field of 18 riders, capturing her first Grand Prix career win in the $25,000 Bonzini S, owned by Thinkslikeahorse. The young horse stepped up to the challenge as he galloped gamely down the first line to SmartPak Grand Prix on Thursday, March 10. “When I started coming to [HITS Ocala] and doing the Junior the combination in eight strides, rolled-back tightly to the oxer, Hunters, it was a dream of mine to ride in the Grand Prix,” said did six forward strides to another oxer and five to the tall vertical, with a split time of 21 seconds.. Gassel. “To actually win one here is totally mind boggling.” Vale rolled-back to the matching red vertical and galloped home The impressive group of jump-off riders included Aaron Vale with two rides along with Great American Million Winner Andre in ten really open strides to the final oxer. They finished with a clean round in 33.759, setting the Great American Time to Beat. Later Vale would go even faster on Quidam’s Good Luck, owned by Troy Glaus, to finish second, moving Bonzini S to third. Daniel Geitner of Aiken, S.C., proved that Vale’s time was beatable by doing nine strides down the final line to finish in 33.329 on Kenwood, but crossed the timers with four faults, out of the top five. Gassel and her huge-strided mount, Quite Dark 2 followed Geitner, with their eyes on the prize. Their blazing fast time of 32.605 seconds topped the leaderboard for the eventual win. “Our plan took a lot of guts, we changed our original plan after watching two or three [trips]. There was just no way to leave out a stride to the combination and still be able to jump out of it, so we did the eight there,” said Gassel. “David told me that the only way we could beat Aaron was to do the six to the five and finish out in Haley Gassel and Quite Dark 2 after winning the $25,000 SmartPak nine instead of 10. We also did only seven in the rollback even Grand Prix though I had planned eight. USHJA Election Nominations for the Presidency Accepted April 1 – May 1 LEXINGTON, KY. –

T

he U.S. Hunter Jumper Association invites members to nominate individuals for the office of president beginning April 1 and closing May 1. The USHJA Board of Directors has scheduled a meeting on Sept. 12 in Dallas, at which point they plan to conduct the presidential election. The election is conducted by a vote of the Board of Directors based on a recommendation from the Nominating Committee, which is compiled from nominations made by members. All USHJA Senior Active or Senior Associate members in good standing

are invited to participate in the nomination period, which begins April 1 and remains open for 30 days, closing on May 1. Based on the nominations received from members, the committee conducts interviews with the nominees and presents its recommendation to the Board. Upon receipt of the committee’s recommendation, board members may make additional nominations for 10 days. The Board plans to vote for the office of president during the Sept. 12 meeting at the Hyatt Regency DFW International Airport Hotel, which begins at 1 p.m. The meeting will be open to members and available to the broader membership via live streaming

video. On Feb 15, the Board ratified updated bylaws, which adjusted the presidential election process to align with governance best practices that allow a president-elect to become familiar with the duties and responsibilities associated with the office. The president-elect will be consulted by the current president during the transition but not take office until after the annual meeting, which is scheduled for Dec. 11-15 in Palm Springs, Calif. The presidential election is one of multiple elections USHJA will hold this year. For more information about the 2016 USHJA elections, visit www.ushja.org/elections2016. HCD

Though certainly not a surprise, it is still always amazing to see our in-state thoroughbred industry numbers in terms of how they fit with and relate to Florida’s economy. A recent 2013 conservative study conducted by nationally acclaimed pari-mutuel and gaming economists Cummings & Associates of horse breeds from the pari-mutuel industry based in the Sunshine State provided a handful of very impressive equine economic impacts including:

■ $1 billion per year of Economic Impact ■ More than $400 million expended per year in local salaries and payroll taxes ■ More than 12,000 jobs ■ An annual economic impact state-wide far in excess of coveted baseball spring training

Quiz Time! Registration opens for 2016 Horsemanship Challenge LEXINGTON, KY. –

T

he United States Hunter Jumper Association has opened registration for the 2016 USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge, presented by The Plaid Horse, at www.ushja.org/HQC. Additionally, the organization has updated the program’s specifications to increase competition among individuals and eliminate team competition. In 2016, the 24 individuals who score the highest in their zone on the Level Two Quiz will be invited to compete in the HQC Nationals where they can win a variety of prizes, including a $1,000 grant for training and education, provided by the USHJA Foundation, as well as a Charles Owen helmet. The 2016 HQC Nationals will only host individual competition, eliminating the team competition portion. “We are excited to offer greater competition at the individual level, which means more individuals have the opportunity to qualify for Nationals,” said Kevin Price, executive director of the USHJA. The Plaid Horse continues as the presenting sponsor for this program, aimed at encouraging excellence in horsemanship among the sport’s youth. Price continued, “We’re pleased to continue our partnership with The Plaid Horse and look forward to bringing the power of horsemanship to more young equestrians through this program.” The HQC is open to any USHJA member who was not 21 years old prior to Dec. 1 of the current competition year. Young equestrians are encouraged to test their horsemanship knowledge by completing the online practice quiz and the Level One and Level Two Quizzes. Participants must score an 80% or above on the Level One Quiz to advance to the Level Two Quiz. Those who score 90% or above on the Level Two Quiz will be eligible for selection to compete at the 2016 HQC Nationals.

“The Plaid Horse was thrilled with the excitement and growth in the 2015 Horsemanship Quiz Challenge, and we look forward to an even bigger year this year,” said Plaid Horse owner Piper Klemm. “Highlighting the importance of horsemanship and knowledge of the sport fuels greater success for riders in all rings.” Resources are available to encourage and assist participants in preparing for the online quizzes including a practice quiz and a study guide. The official study guide covers topics that include horse identification, anatomy, nutrition, riding theory and welfare, and it is available to everyone interested in expanding their equine knowledge, not just HQC participants. The Horsemanship Quiz Challenge is supported in part by generous grants from the United States Equestrian Federation and the USHJA Foundation. For a complete list of 2016 HQC specifications including eligibility, requirements, and qualifying procedures for HQC Nationals, visit www.ushja.org/HQC. HCD

Extended Pact HITS, RIDE TV Continue Agreement SAUGERTIES, N.Y. –

H

ITS Inc. is pleased to announce its continued partnership with RIDE TV in bringing world-class equestrian entertainment to television viewers everywhere for the fifth consecutive year. As part of a new multi-year agreement, RIDE TV will once again deliver coverage of HITS Horse Show’s premier Grand Prix events to all DISH Network subscribers, where the network recently launched on Channel 248 on the America’s Top 250 package as well as on FIOS, and numerous cable providers throughout the U.S. As the Official Television Partner of HITS, RIDE TV will make highlighted HITS events more accessible to the public. “RIDE TV is proud to once again partner

with the premier producer of equine events in North America. HITS hosts world-class events attended by some of the greatest horsemen and women in the world, riding some of the best equine athletes in the world,” said RIDE TV President, Craig Morris. “The shows take place at the most impressive venues in the U.S., with some of the largest prize money available. It is exactly what RIDE TV wants to bring to our viewers, and partnering with HITS allows us to do just that. We are proud to be associated with this kind of equine excellence.” RIDE TV will air the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO 4, presented by Edge Brewing Barcelona, held last month at HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala on March 17 at 9/8c. RIDE TV will also air one-hour specials featuring the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix events

in Thermal, Calif.; the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix events in Ocala as well as one-hour shows featuring the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix events in Saugerties. “HITS’ partnership with RIDE TV continues to be a natural fit,” said HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri. “Together, HITS and RIDE TV will deliver the sport of show jumping to the masses and give national attention to a well-deserved division of athletes. This confirms our commitment to growing the recognition of horse sports in the United States.” Producing the television coverage for HITS and RIDE TV will once again be HITS’ official broadcast partner, A Good Show, creators of quality, progressive network and cable sports and entertainment television. Giving Back Gochman Family donates $250G to support youth program LEXINGTON, KY. –

USHJA ARCHIVES PHOTO

T

he Gochman Family, US Hunter Jumper Association members and philanthropists, have donated $250,000 to the USHJA Foundation to support a long-term USHJAF Gochman Family US Pony Finals Grant Program. Each year, the foundation will award grants to deserving juniors that give them an opportunity to experience US Pony Finals on a qualified pony. “Sportsmanship, horsemanship and hard work are the backbone of every great equestrian, and this grant celebrates these qualities in a unique and inspiring way for our youngest equestrians,” said USHJA Foundation President Jennifer Burger. “We could not be more excited or thankful for the Gochmans’ generosity to ensure this grant can benefit more young riders for years to come, and, without their initial support, we wouldn’t have been able to establish the grant last year.” The USHJA Foundation is accepting applications for the USHJAF Gochman Family US Pony Finals Grant. This grant is awarded each year to no more than three riders who exemplify the qualities that are most important in our sport - sportsmanship, tenacity, and horsemanship. Applications close April 30. The grant recipients each receive an all-expense paid opportunity to compete at Pony Finals on a qualified pony. Expenses covered include housing, transportation, food and other items necessary for a child to compete. The grant will also provide the rider with an appropriate pony and will offer the opportunity for the rider to practice on the pony prior to the competition. “Giving back to this sport that has given us so much is extremely important to our entire family,” said Becky Gochman. “Ponies hold a special place in our hearts, and we look forward to this grant inspiring young equestrians to follow their dreams.” In addition to providing the future funding for this program, the Gochmans’ initial contribution established the grant in 2015, enabling Matthew Bravo, 12, to become the inaugural grant recipient. The grant allowed Matthew to compete on two ponies and participate in two clinics. He showed Island Grace, leased by Brick Church Farm, in the Medium Pony Hunter section and Plumbago, owned by Charlie Moorcroft and Geoff Teall, in the Small Pony Hunter section with trainer Karen Kelley of Charleston, S.C., by his side. Matthew placed 71st (of 120) on Plumbago and 18th (of 156) on Island Grace. He also received a number of items from USHJA Sponsors, as well as stabling from Kentucky Horse Shows LLC. For more information about the USHJA Foundation and how to support the work of the foundation, visit www.ushjafoundation.org. HCD

Cook’s Recipe Outlasts Carlsen in Card Flex Grand Prix THERMAL, CALIF. –

R

iders faced the 1.50-meter course set by Canada’s Danny Foster in the $50,000 Card Flex Grand Prix on Sunday, March 13, many of them using the Grand Prix as a stepping stone to the March 20 AIG $1 Million Grand Prix, the first leg in the HITS Triple Crown of Show jumping. The impressive lineup of competitors included Chris Pratt, winner of multiple Grand Prix this circuit, and Eric Navet, winner of Week III’s $65,500 Wilmington Trust Grand Prix and third in the $100,000 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Thermal qualifier. The victory would go to Week VI SmartPak Grand Prix winner Karl Cook of Woodside, Calif., and Tembla, owned by Signe Ostby. The class would prove to be an all-out battle between Cook and Lisa Carlsen of Okotoks, Alberta. Eight riders mastered the first round fault-free to come back for the jump-off. Five of those eight jumped clear around the shortened course with only a half-second separating the top two. The shortened course of eight jumping-efforts included a long gallop from fence 1 to 2, then horses had to navigate a tight roll back and combination. First to come back for the jump-off was Karl Cook with the first of his two mounts, Basimodo, the first of three jump-off mounts owned by Signe Ostby.

They would have four faults, but the fastest four-fault time, finishing sixth in 48.718. Following Cook was Lisa Carlsen riding Worlds Judgement, owned by W.J. Partners. Carlsen was ready to take home the title as she galloped away from the large oxer in the corner to the tight roll-back turn, setting the Great American Time to beat of 46.516 as they crossed the timers, a time that would hold on through the next five challengers. Mandy Porter of Encinitas, Calif., with the first of her two rides, Agro Star, owned by Little Valley Farms, gave the rest of the field a run for their money, finishing fault-free in 47.690 seconds, but still Carlsen had the lead. The round would ultimately land Porter and Agro Star in fifth place. Kristen Hardin aboard Firestone, owned by Nicole Teague, was one of the two to perform the tight inside turn to the second-to-last fence but did not have the time to edge Carlsen out of the lead, crossing the markers in 48.807 seconds and ultimately grabbing the fourth-place finish. Returning to the jump-off ring for the second time was Cook on Tembla as the battle to top Carlsen on the leaderboard continued. They set a blazing-fast pace, knowing they would have to be quick and clear to contend for the lead. As the crowd cheered, they stopped the clock at 45.135 to capture the lead from Carlsen by more than a full second, putting her ride in second-place.

for Success “It was a really fast jump off and Lisa set a time I didn’t think I could catch, but Tembla really stepped up to grasp her first Grand Prix win,” said Cook. “[The result] was a great way to head into the AIG Million.” Porter then returned with her second jump-off mount, Ace of Hearts, also owned by Little Valley Farms. Taking all the inside turns, she could not catch Cook’s electric round. They would land in third place with a time of 47.690 seconds. The final rider in the jump-off was Eric Navet of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., riding Catypso, the third horse in the jump-off owned by Signe Ostby of Woodside, Calif. After an unfortunate rail at 5b, sealing the win for Cook, Eric took his time through the rest of the jump off, and finished with a four-fault score in a time of 50.085 seconds. Reflecting on the class and HITS series of shows, Cook said, “I’m really proud of all my horses, especially Tembla. She has made a lot of progress and we still have a bit to figure out, but I’m really happy with the progress she has made. The only thing that would have made it better would have been if my mom [Signe Ostby] was here. I’m so lucky to have her support and I’m very grateful for that."

Four of the nine left all the rails up, so speed and tight turns were the ultimate deciding factors. “Eminent is such a consistent horse, she’s always in the ribbons," said Porter. “She’s always in the money and a great horse to have on our team. Huge thank you to UltrOz for sponsoring this class.” Foster designed a galloping course of 15 jumping efforts for the first round, set at 1.40 meters. The jump-off included several tight rollbacks that took up time, challenging riders to gallop the length of the stadium between jumps. First to continue to the jump-off was Tamie Phillips of Calgary, Alberta, riding her own Cat Balou. Phillips set the tone as she blazed from fence two to three, making efficient turns throughout the course on the talented Cat Balou.
