From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff

I

t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but I just don’t get it. If, while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps notso-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 27

ESI PHOTO

Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part

of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

8 Horse Capital Digest • March 11, 2016

Grandstand direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course.

COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump. FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a

ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

s the curtains closed on Ocala Week VII, jumpers competed for a blue-ribbon victory in the $50,000 Ring Power Grand Prix, $7,500 U-Dump Junior/AmateurOwner Jumper Classic and $1,000 S.A. Comunale Adult Jumper Classic on Sunday, March 6.

RING POWER GRAND PRIX In an exciting 10-horse jump-off, Harold Chopping from Southern Pines, N.C., riding Basje, owned by Kendra Bullington, out galloped the strong competition. Less than four-tenths of a second separated the top four contestants in a nail-biter of a jump-off that had spectators on the edge of their seats. A group of 44 competitors challenged the 15effort 1.50-meter course designed by Bernardo Cabral from Lisbon, Portugal. The first round course included a difficult triple combination and a double, but 10 still managed to jump clear first rounds. The jump-off started with a gallop away from the in-gate; included a rollback to a triple bar followed by a vertical, and a gallop between jumps to the two final oxers, with several turn and striding options for the route. Five of the 10 in the jump-off managed double clears with mere fractions of a second separating the top four. First to go in the jump-off was Christoph Schroeder of Wellington, riding his own Catungee. Schroeder set a blistering pace right out of the box knowing that nine fast horses followed him. He jumped clear and set the Great American Time to Beat of 37.808 that held on through the next five challengers and landed him in second place when the class was done. Following Schroeder was owner and rider Christi Israel of Ocala, aboard Clouseau. They had two rails for eight faults and a time of 40.263 to finish 10th. Isabelle LaPierre of Levis, Quebec, came next to contest the shortened course riding Cescha M. They gave Schroeder a run for the money, finishing in a fault-free 38.00. She

stepped into the temporary second place and would eventually take home fourth. Next up was Andre Thieme of Plau Am See, Germany, riding his horse, Conthendrix. Their time of 37.882 edged out La Pierre to squeak into the second-place spot behind Schroeder. It was good enough for a third-place finish. Continued on next page

Devin Ryan of Long Valley, N.J., and Liratus had four faults in 38.776 to take ninth place. Next up was Brandi Holloway of Topeka, Kan. riding Lucky Strike, owned by Hays Investment Corp. As one of the most consistent performers this circuit, they turned in another great round, finishing as the fastest of the four faulters to finish sixth in 33.677. Returning to the ring next was Chopping on Basje. They stopped the clock at 37.639 to edge Schroder out of the top spot by .169 seconds. No one would beat them. “By the time I went in the Order, the pace and the route had already been established,” said Chopping. “Some people did one less stride to the final jump. I just try to do what my horse is capable of doing. Last week I got too aggressive at the end. People in front of me and after me were very strong. Basje is very quick on his own and I have to keep reminding myself not to try to be fast for him.” Both Tracy Fenney. riding MTM Reve Du Paradis, and Manuel Torres, riding Christofolini H, had the times to beat Chopping, but each had four faults to finish seventh and eighth, respectively. The final rider to jump off was Sharn Woodley of Ocala, riding Barnetta for the Skye Group. He opted for a safe, clear track to finish in fifth. “He has been brilliant this circuit and always jumps in textbook form,” said Chopping of Basje. “This is our first Grand Prix win this season, but he has been second and in the ribbons multiple times. I feel lucky to be riding him for Kendra, she has owned him since he was a 7-year-old. Now he is 10 and really coming into his own.”

had four faults at the combination in the jump-off in a time of 33.962. That would be good for the eventual sixth place. “The course was fairly technical for our horses that have such big strides because it had a lot of tight lines," said Petersen. Following Petersen to jump-off was Moggre and MTM Flutterby. The chestnut mare, bred by Tracey Fenney, has been the one to beat in the classic week after week, with two U-Dump Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic victories so far. They crossed the timers in 32.278, setting the Great American Time to Beat and would end up second when the class was done. Next to contend the shortened course was Carolina Ramelli Barrera of Medelin, Colombia, and her own Zoran de Saulieu. They clocked in at a fault-free 33.048, just a hair behind Moggre, earning third place. Elisa Uribe Gutierrez, also of Medelin, riding Havana De La Lande, finished clear in 33.528, giving her a fourth-place finish, and Moggre on MTM Ace of Spades finished in 33.636 with no faults for fifth-place. Last to go in the jump-off was Petersen and Titus 2:11. Petersen showed that he learned from his first ride in the jump-off. The big bay galloped through the timers in 31.368 to capture the lead and take home the blue ribbon. “Going last in the jump-off, we knew we had to go for it because Brian [Moggre] was really fast,” said Derek Petersen. “It really helped to have Cornerstone go first because their strides are so similar. Jared just tried to ride it as smooth as he could, and his bigger stride using the same track was just enough for the win. We were really happy with Titus’ performance today … he is just starting to come back to form after six months of rest.”

The footing is amazing and the jumps are beautiful. I can understand why so many top riders love showing here.” Cabral designed the .90-meter course, which was run with an immediate jump-off. My horse felt great this morning so we were able to stick with the plan,” said Manubay. “I am very fortunate that my time held up. There were some very quick horses that went after me. We did an inside turn from 1 to 2 and everyone pretty much took the same track, but my horse is quick across the ground, so we could save a little time in certain spots.” Katie Holt of Melbourne Beach, riding Charmeur D’Uno V, owned by Whisper Group Inc., jumped into second place with only three to go in a time of 33.529. The final horse to test the shortened course was True Contender, owned and ridden by Colby Hernandez of Morriston. Their time of 33.530 earned them third place. HCD www.horsecapitaldigest.com 13

They jumped the first line in nine strides, executed neat turns and did eight strides to the final oxer to finish in 43.419. Next up was Blue Moon 22, owned by Full Circle Farm, with David Jennings of Franklin, Tenn., in the irons. They opted for eight strides in the opening line, leaving out a stride to the final oxer to cross the timers in 41.905 to take over the lead. The round would eventually earn them third-place. Following Jennings was Manuel Torres of Waterford, Va., riding Christofolini H, owned by Andrea Torres Guerreiro. Winners of the Brook Ledge Open Welcome in Week II, Torres and Christofolini H threw caution to the wind, taking to the course at an all-out gallop. They raced through the timers in 39.192, stealing the short-lived lead from Jenkins to set a new Great American Time to Beat. Tracy Fenney of Flower Mound, Texas, riding MTM Reve Du Paradis, found a way to better that time, finishing in 38.310, but an unfortunate rail led to the eventual seventh place. Amanda Flint of Long Valley, N.J., riding Coverboy, owned by The Coverboy Group, crossed the timers fault-free in 46.179 to finish sixth. Though certainly not a surprise, it is still always amazing to see our in-state thoroughbred industry numbers in terms of how they fit with and relate to Florida’s economy. A recent 2013 conservative study conducted by nationally acclaimed pari-mutuel and gaming economists Cummings & Associates of horse breeds from the pari-mutuel industry based in the Sunshine State provided a handful of very impressive equine economic impacts including:

■ $1 billion per year of Economic Impact ■ More than $400 million expended per year in local salaries and payroll taxes ■ More than 12,000 jobs ■ An annual economic impact state-wide far in excess of coveted baseball spring training

Special Community Update S BY KEVIN T. SHEILLEY, PRESIDENT AND CEO OCALA/MARION COUNTY CHAMBER & ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP_

Safety. It is probably something we all take for granted until we need it. It is important to our families and to our businesses. We all want to know that in time of emergency, we can depend on the fire department, emergency services, and law enforcement to come to our aid. Additionally, we assume we will have safe and viable roads to get us (and our trailers) where we need to go. On Tuesday, voters in Marion County will have the chance to ensure the above is true when they are asked to approve a 1% local sales tax for public safety. First, here are the key facts regarding the sales tax: • It would be levied for four years starting Jan. 1, 2017, and sunset on Dec. 31, 2020. • By law, only voters can extend the tax. In other words, the tax must sunset unless the voters chose to extend it. Kevin T. Sheilley/FILE PHOTO • 100% of the funds would go to support Public Safety (Fire/Rescue/Law Enforcement) and Transportation Improvements. • The Sales Tax ensures that everyone is helping to support these vital services with visitors and tourists expected to generate up to 30% of the revenue.

From 2008 to 2014, property assessments in Marion County declined by approximately 40%. To aid property owners during the Great Recession, County government kept the millage rate unchanged. So, during this period, local government saw their revenue decline by this incredible amount. The loss of millions of dollars of revenue forced the County to delay many capital expenditures and transportation projects. As a result, we now face a significant backlog of capital needs for our first responders and in transportation projects. County assessments are now starting to rebound but it will be many years before they fully recover. The sales tax will provide a bridge to addressing this backlog and preparing us for the future. This issue is especially important to our equine community. The County Commission has been clear that the funding needs for these areas must be addressed. If the sales tax does not pass, then property owners can expect to see a significant increase in both ad valorem millage rates (property taxes) and fire assessments. When the consultant recommendation came back on the County’s fire assessment fees, one of the area’s which would be hit hardest would be agriculture. Increases ranging from 25-400% could be expected. Our equine community will see a significant financial impact should the sales tax fail to pass. Marion County’s emergency service providers do incredible work each and every day. We need to make sure they have the tools they need to keep us safe. The choice is simple—a sales tax which ensures everyone is helping to provide for these important services or property taxes and fees which are only paid by property owners. Please join us in voting “Yes” on Tuesday for a Safe, Sound, and Secure community. For more information, please go to VoteYes2016.com. HCD

Welcome

to HITS Ocala A brief overlook of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit in 2016 H

its Ocala is hosting a 10-week USEF-rated circuit this year. It began Jan. 19 and runs through March 20. All 10 weeks have been USEF Nationalor Premier-rated Hunters. All shows count toward the Horseware Ireland Grand Circuit Awards, Marshall & Sterling Insurance League, and the HITS Championship in Saugerties, N.Y. this September. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix returns to the stage in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, March 27. The second jewel of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping debuted with great success in 2014 and we look forward to treating exhibitors and spectators alike to another tremendous event! The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO4*, an official World Ranking Competition, took place Friday, Feb. 19 during the Ocala Winter Festival. Over $400,000 was offered in the FEI Jumper division throughout the week, including $200,000 in the Nations Cup and $150,000 in the Grand Prix. The Overlook VIP Club offered a unique hospitality experience including world-class culinary presentation, complete with complimentary beer and wine service. The Ocala Horse Properties Stadium is the full-time Grand Prix Ring. The stadium, located on HITS property just across 137th Avenue, opened to rave reviews two years ago. The former Grand Prix Ring is Jumper Ring 1 and provided a second Feature Jumper Ring for horses and riders moving up the ranks. The Overlook VIP Club has been at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the entire circuit, serving breakfast and lunch each show day throughout the circuit. The former VIP area was replaced by a lovely cafĂŠ serving breakfast and lunch, with covered seating overlooking Jumper Ring 1 and the Main Hunter Ring.

Footing in all the Hunter Rings and Hunter Schooling Areas has been redone to match the footing in the Main Hunter Ring. Follow the progress on our Facebook page. The safety and well-being of your horses, and peace of mind for you, is our top priority. Over the past year, HITS has been at the forefront of implementing a standard Equine Health Protocol at all its shows. The Bio-Security Plan and Required Vaccination Protocol that HITS developed is being emulated across the country. Please be sure to review the requirements as printed in the prize list, and check HitsShows.com prior to your arrival to review the most up-to-date information.

With $3 million in prize money and qualifiers for all the HITS Championship classes, HITS offers something special for everyone, every week. HCD

eek VI’s big competition and big money opportunities continued into the weekend. The rider in the winner's circle was Karl Cook, who took home back-to-back wins in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix Friday, March 4, and the $15,000 UltrOz Jumper the following day.

SMARTPAK GRAND PRIX An impressive lineup of 43 competitors including Olympians Will Simpson and Rich Fellers filled the Order of Go but the victory would go home with Woodside, Calif., equestrian Karl Cook aboard Basimodo, owned by Signe Ostby, in an all-out battle with Chris Pratt. Both the time allowed and rails were factors in the first-round of Friday’s course set by Brazilian course designer Marina Azevedo as only three competitors jumped fault-free. Two others jumped clean but incurred time faults. Eighteenth in the order, Simpson and E-Unanime De La Haie, owned by Monarch International, was the first to leave all the rails up in the first round, but two time faults ultimately landed them in fifth place. The crowd watched in anticipation as, round after round, riders failed to master the course. After 22 trips of what seemed to be an unconquerable 16-jumping efforts within a tight time allowed, Pratt and Cruise, owned by Indigo Farms LLC, came

in to prove that it could be done. The pair became the first to qualify for the eventual three-horse jump-off. Peter Petschenig followed Pratt three trips later, piloting Colour Your Life, co-owned with Pam-Bilek Petschenig, leaving all of the rails up, but a single time-fault by just fractions of a second earned them fourth place. Another seven trips would pass, and a jump-off did not seem to be on the horizon until the victors themselves, Cook and Basimodo entered the ring. They made it through clean and quick to ensure a jump-off. Second-to-last in the order, Pratt returned on his second ride, Concorde, owned by the Epic Group. Pratt also qualified Concorde for the jump-off, ensuring himself two of the three jump-off spots. Pratt was the first to return to contest the shortened course aboard Cruise. They zipped through the course with no rails down, crossing the timers in a speedy 36.845 to set the jump-off tone. Cook and Basimodo followed. The powerhouse equestrian navigated his mount through the eightfence course, shaving off time as the talented bay gelding covered the ground. The clock ticked by and the atmosphere was electric as cheers poured from the stands. They clocked in at 35.382 to take over the lead and eventual win. The win was not sealed for Cook yet, however, as Pratt still had one more chance to claim the title with Continued on following page

Chris has had a great circuit and I knew I needed to be on my game, but Basimodo makes that pretty easy. I guess Friday was my day. Big congratulations to Chris for having two of the three clear.” said Cook.

The heatwave took a break on Saturday, March 5, but the riders did not. Hot off the prior day’s $25,000 Smartpak Grand Prix win, Cook did it again, this time riding Signe Ostby’s Caillou 24.
