Equine Health Entry Requirements P

rotecting the health of your horse and other horses at HITS Ocala Winter Circuit is of the utmost importance to HITS. To that end HITS has implemented required biosecurity measures to decrease the risk of introduction and/or spread of contagious or infectious disease at its shows. Horses must arrive only between the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Off-hours arrival must obtain permission from show management by calling 352-620-2275 24 hours prior to arrival.

Andre Thieme

UPON ARRIVAL TO POST TIME FARM, ALL HORSES MUST HAVE:

Signed by the owner/agent/trainer verifying that the horse has been healthy with no sign of infectious disease and has not had a fever above 102°F within 72 hours of arrival. An Event Participation Declaration Form is available in this prize list and at HitsShows.com. A new Event Participation Declaration Form must be filed each time the horse enters the property. Horses stabled off the property that “ship-in” on a regular basis must comply with this requirement as well as additional requirements noted on the following pages. Visit HitsShows.com for further details.

PROOF OF VACCINATION A signed statement from the attending veterinarian that the horse has been vaccinated against the following: Within six months of each show: Equine Influenza Within three months of each show: EHV 1 and EHV 4 If a vaccination will expire during one of the shows, the horse must receive its new vaccination prior to being issued a competition number for that show.

Welcome

to HITS Ocala A brief overlook of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit in 2016 H

its Ocala is hosting a 10-week USEF-rated circuit this year. It began Jan. 19 and runs through March 20. All 10 weeks have been USEF Nationalor Premier-rated Hunters. All shows count toward the Horseware Ireland Grand Circuit Awards, Marshall & Sterling Insurance League, and the HITS Championship in Saugerties, N.Y. this September. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix returns to the stage in the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, March 27. The second jewel of the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping debuted with great success in 2014 and we look forward to treating exhibitors and spectators alike to another tremendous event! The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup CSIO4*, an official World Ranking Competition, took place Friday, Feb. 19 during the Ocala Winter Festival. Over $400,000 was offered in the FEI Jumper division throughout the week, including $200,000 in the Nations Cup and $150,000 in the Grand Prix. The Overlook VIP Club offered a unique hospitality experience including world-class culinary presentation, complete with complimentary beer and wine service. The Ocala Horse Properties Stadium is the full-time Grand Prix Ring. The stadium, located on HITS property just across 137th Avenue, opened to rave reviews two years ago. The former Grand Prix Ring is Jumper Ring 1 and provided a second Feature Jumper Ring for horses and riders moving up the ranks. The Overlook VIP Club has been at the Ocala Horse Properties Stadium for the entire circuit, serving breakfast and lunch each show day throughout the circuit. The former VIP area was replaced by a lovely cafĂŠ serving breakfast and lunch, with covered seating overlooking Jumper Ring 1 and the Main Hunter Ring.

Footing in all the Hunter Rings and Hunter Schooling Areas has been redone to match the footing in the Main Hunter Ring. Follow the progress on our Facebook page. The safety and well-being of your horses, and peace of mind for you, is our top priority. Over the past year, HITS has been at the forefront of implementing a standard Equine Health Protocol at all its shows. The Bio-Security Plan and Required Vaccination Protocol that HITS developed is being emulated across the country. Please be sure to review the requirements as printed in the prize list, and check HitsShows.com prior to your arrival to review the most up-to-date information.

With $3 million in prize money and qualifiers for all the HITS Championship classes, HITS offers something special for everyone, every week. HCD

From the A spectator’s guide to show jumping By HITS Staff

I

t’s beautiful, it’s impressive and it’s exciting, but I just don’t get it. If, while sitting in the grandstand at a horse show, you find yourself thinking these things, you’re not alone. Have no fear, however, HITS has put together a guide to horse shows for the avid or perhaps notso-avid spectator. The following will give you an insider’s look at the horse show world and how to navigate all that you will see during HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

WHAT YOU’RE WATCHING AND HOW TO JUDGE IT: JUMPERS—Jumper classes, like the March 27

ESI PHOTO

Great American $1 Million Grand Prix, are spectator favorites because they are relatively simple to judge and are based on speed and athleticism. Jumper classes are judged on “faults” and “time.” The standard is cut and dry: You either have the fastest round without faults or you don’t. A fault is a numerical penalty for an error. A horse and rider that knock down a rail or any part

of the jump that establishes its height will acquire four faults. If a horse refuses to jump any one of the fences in the course, that also counts as four faults. A second refusal results in elimination of the horse and rider from the class. Speed becomes important as there is a time allowed set for each course. A time fault is given for each second or fraction of a second that the horse remains on course over the time allowed. A clean round is one where there are no time or jumping faults. If more than one horse goes clean over a course, a timed jump-off or shorter course will determine the winner. Should two or more horses have an equal number of jumping faults in the jump-off, the fastest time will determine the winner. HUNTERS—Hunter classes judge the horse. A hunter should have a long, low, ground-covering stride and jump the fences easily, smoothly and with consistent pace. Hunters are quiet, exhibit good manners both over fences and under saddle and jump courses that involve

Grandstand direct lines and straight-forward fences, usually designed with natural elements and colors. At the conclusion of over -fences classes, hunters are often asked to jog for soundness. They trot in a line in front of the judge before placings are made final. The judge will evaluate the horse’s conformation, health and overall gait both during the class and in the jog. At the end of class, a judge will assign a hunter and its rider a numerical score out of 100 based on how well they executed the course and how professional they looked doing it. Shiny boots, well-tailored clothes and a smartly groomed horse all count in the hunter ring. EQUITATION—Equitation classes judge the rider on their form, their guidance of the horse, effectiveness of their aids, position of legs, hands and upper body position, and the ability to perform certain tests with style and precision. The rider’s legs should be perpendicular to the ground and quiet with the heel down. Their hands should be supple and follow the movement of the horse’s head. The upper body should be upright, but relaxed with a slight arch in the lower back. The rider’s head should be up and looking forward. Equitation classes are generally judged on the flat at the walk, trot and canter and over fences. Equitation riders, like hunter riders, are assigned a score out of 100 by a judge based on their performance. The highest score wins the blue. Learn these terms and you will be on the way to impressing all your “horsey” friends STRIDE – the amount of ground a horse covers. At the canter, the average stride of a horse is 12 feet. The distances between fences of jumping courses are set accordingly. SCHOOLING – practice or training before competition. The riders practice in a schooling area and are not allowed to practice on the actual course. ORDER OF GO – the order in which the competitors compete over the set course.

COURSE WALK – riders walk the course to measure the number of strides their horse will need between each jump. FAULTS – numerical penalties assigned for downed rails, refusals or going over the time allowed. TIME ALLOWED – the time, determined by the course designer, that it should take a horse to navigate a jumper course. REFUSAL – a horse that stops in front of a fence and will not attempt to jump it. CLEAN/CLEAR – when the horse and rider complete all jumps on the course without a single jumping or time fault. JUMP-OFF – the riders who have a clean round compete in a timed jump-off over a shortened course to determine the winner of the class. TACK – the equipment used on the horse including the saddle and the bridle. COMBINATION – two or more jumps set close together and designed to be jump with fewer strides in between and judged as one element. LIVERPOOL – a fence set over water or a

ditch filled with water that horse and rider must clear. GREEN – a horse, usually young, with little experience. HCD

Trifecta! T

he second $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby of the HITS Hunter Derby Tour paid a visit to HITS Post Time Farm Saturday, Feb. 26, during Week VI of the Ocala Winter Circuit. Following the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup week was the biggest hunter week of winter and the stage was set. Tim Hott of Cumming, Iowa, designed a beautiful course

of 13 fences for the 41 who gathered from the East Coast and beyond to contest the two-round Derby. It would be Keswick, Va., equestrian Kelley Farmer who would walk away with the top three titles and four additional ribbons in the top 12. “All of the horses were great through the course, and the course was beautiful, too. [The event] was just all around quality in addition to having the opportunity to compete for this kind of money,” said Farmer.

OCALA –

Farmer sweeps top 3 spots in $100G Derby Farmer claimed first place with seasoned Derby winner Mindful, owned by Kensel LLC, as well as second with Baltimore, owned by Jane Gaston, and third with It’s Me, co-owned with Bibby Hill and Sue Pinney. “It’s just incredible, but I could not have done it without everyone you see out here, the owners and all who support us. It takes a village. I also owe it to all of these talented, four-legged animals: They’re amazing,” Farmer said. “I was lucky enough to have plenty of shots [at the win]. Two panels of judges – Scott Williamson, Kim Dorfman, Mike Rosser and Steve Wall – critiqued each rider. “The course was beautiful and very well done,” said Rosser, a judge for the United States Equestrian Federation of 25 years. “The fences were unique, and it was a different track than you normally see. The riders had not just one or two options, but three or four options … it was one of the better quality courses that I have seen.” Unique to the Derby format, in addition to the base score, each judging panel awarded an Option Bonus Score consisting of one additional point for every higher height-option fence jumped. As 12 returned for the second round, judges awarded a base score, Option Bonus Score and a Handy Bonus Score, assessing the handiness of the round. Farmer finished the first round with the highest score aboard Point Being, owned by David Glefke. Six of the 12 returning rounds were piloted by Farmer, but a talented list of contenders ready to rally for blue still filled the second-round Order. After four trips, two including Farmer and her eventual seventh-place mount Need I Say and eighth-place Courville Paola, owned by Melissa Rudershausen, no score had come close to Farmer until Cassandra Kahle of Langley, British Columbia, stepped in. Kahle and Cornetto Royal, owned by Yvetta Rechler-Newman, opted for all four height options and received a combined total of 15 Handy Bonus Points. It was quite the comeback, but not

enough to garner the lead. A first-round score of 172.5 combined with a second-round score of 196 totaled 368.5 for fourth place, just half of a point away from what would be Farmer’s third-place score of 369. Eighth in the Order was Elizabeth Boyd of Camden, S.C., and Brunello. The graceful chestnut Hanoverian and Boyd, a three-time winner of the USJHA International Derby Championships, opted for all four height options and received a combined total of 15 Handy Bonus Points from the two judging panels. They earned a second-round score of 188, which, combined with their firstround score of 176, gave them a total of 364 for the eventual fifth place. The last four trips of the $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby belonged to Farmer. The victory was hers to win, with the horse she would share the winner’s circle yet to be determined. Farmer returned with Baltimore. Opting for all four height options, and earning a combined total of 14 Handy Bonus Points from the two judging panels, they received a total second-round score of 197.5. Combined with their first-round score of 177, that gave them a total of 374.5 for second-place, not a bad turnout for the Oldenburg’s first-ever Derby. “Baltimore is a first-time Derby horse, and to be second with him is just wonderful. It’s an awesome result,” said Farmer. Farmer followed her own round with It’s Me. The judging panels awarded a combined 14 Handy Bonus Points and a total second-round score of 192. Combined with their first-round score of 177, they came out just ahead of Kahle with an overall total of 369 for third-place. Mindful and Farmer entered to put in the winning round, and the stunning black Hanoverian gelding silenced the crowd as they gracefully conquered the course, earning a total second-round score of 211. Combined with their first-round score 185, their overall score of 396 sky-rocketed above the rest to top the leaderboard. “Mindful is a seasoned Derby horse,” said Farmer. “He makes it easy, he knows what he is Rider Prize doing and is just a true winner.” Kelley Farmer $30,000 The $100,000 USHJA InternaKelley Farmer $22,000 tional Hunter Derby will make two Kelley Farmer $13,000 Cassandra Kahle $8,000 more visits to HITS this year, stopElizabeth Boyd $6,000 ping at HITS Desert Circuit VIII in Kelley Farmer $5,000 Thermal, Calif., March 15-20 and Kelley Farmer $4,000 again at HITS-on-the-Hudson VI in Kelley Farmer $3,000 Saugerties, N.Y., Aug. 3-6. OCALA – plethora of talented starters filled the Order of Go as the crowd descended upon Ocala Horse Properties Stadium to witness who would conquer the course set by Danny Foster of Ontario and take home the crown in the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix on Sunday, Feb. 29.The day would belong to Sparr, Fla., equestrian Hayley Waters and Qurint, owned by Chuck and Dana Waters. The 19-year-old dominated the field in all three classes held in Ocala Horse Properties Stadium on Sunday, also winning the $7,500 U-Dump Jr/A-O Jumper Classic and the $5,000 NAL Jr/A-O Jumper Classic. “Tom has been the best in supporting the Junior/Amateur divisions throughout the year and definitely with the $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix [at the

Zilano M and Michelle Stopford, and Amanda Flint on her second ride, Superbad, also returned to contest the course, but none could beat Waters’ time. Waters has grown up on the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit, participating in lead-line at the very same venue, making the victory all the more sweet. HITS Championship] that she won last year,” said Dana Waters in regard to HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri. “The prize money that is offered in the jumper divisions is the reason we moved to Ocala, and we’ve lived here for 20 years. We might even qualify her for the Great American Million this year, you never know what will happen.” Ten would go clear in the first round to return for the jump-off and six would put in double-clear rounds. The first to contend the shortened course was Isabelle LaPierre of Quebec and her own Cesha M. They crossed the timers in a fault-free 44.672 to set the tone for the jump-off. New Jersey equestrian Amanda Flint, hot off a win in the Feb. 26 $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, and her own VDL Wittinger entered next to challenge the shortened course. They put down a speedy round, taking the tight rollback turn from the mid-course combination to a vertical leading to a gallop across the arena to the last set of fences. They set the Great American Time to Beat as they crossed the markers fault-free in 44.240. Flint’s lead would be short-lived, however, as Germany’s Andre Thieme, previous winner of two HITS $1 Million Grand Prix, followed with his own Cellisto. They turned tightly through the rollback, and upon landing Theime and the big-strided bay kicked it into high gear as they galloped toward the last two fences. They clocked in at 42.046 to take the lead by more than two seconds. Three more trips would go before Thieme’s time would be tested. Waters and Qurint came in next, with their sights set on a trifecta of wins in the Stadium. As cheers poured out from the stands, urging the young, talented rider to the finish, Qurint and Waters blazed through the course. The mare’s ground-covering stride proved helpful as they galloped to the last set of fences, crossing the timers in a fault-free 41.915 and setting the new Great American Time to Beat. “My plan was to go as fast as I could in the open areas. I got pretty lucky to A of the combination, I was going a little fast, but we made it through,” said Waters. “After the rollback turn, the goal was to go quick in that area to shave off time.” Ocala’s Ian Silitch followed Waters with Cordovo. Waters, riding Galous, a new entry for Chuck and Dana Waters, sped to the win in the $7,500 U-Dump 1.45-meter Junior/Amateur-Owner Classic Feb. 29. Dana Waters was thrilled with the 14-year-old chestnut, who was just purchased Feb. 24 and is already claiming blue ribbons. Horses and riders competed over a 15-effort course set at 1.45 meters by Foster. Eight horses jumped clear in the first round to advance to the jump-off and it was a race to the finish. The course featured a Liverpool, two combinations, tight inside turns and a challenging left turn to a combination previously jumped from the right in Round 1. First to go in the jump-off was Niels Kirsten riding Chateaugravin. They finished in a fault-free 51.155 to set the tone for the class. Stepping into the ring next was Caprisio and Caroline McLeese of Omaha, Neb. McLeese and the speedy gray took all the inside turns, including a slice inside the Liverpool to fence 13. They crossed the timers in 49.103 to take over the lead. Waters followed McLeese. Opting for the same route as McLeese, Waters and Galous moved faster across the ground, shaving more than three seconds off the leading round to top the leaderboard with a clear, 45.842-second round. “This is only the third time I’ve jumped him, and I think he was really looking for where he had to go, which kept him sharp even though I got deep to the in and out,” said Waters. “I just stayed on one pace throughout and [Galous] did the rest.” The next four riders had four faults on the course including Melissa Rudershausen of Kennett Square, Pa., and her own Ugolin Du Mont. Their time of 46.933 proved to be the fastest of the four faulters and eventually earned them fourth. Fifth-place Lina Rojas-Restrepo aboard Mauricio Restrepo’s Ramdam De Dry clocked in with four faults in 47.965. The final horse to jump off was Cafino Z, owned by Mauricio Restrepo of Wilmette, Ill., and ridden by Lina Rojas-Restrepo for her second shot at the blue. Cheers rang out from the in-gate as Rojas-Restrepo galloped the gray to a finish in 48.043 to take second place, securing her two spots in the Top 5.

A Lotta Moxie, a 19-yearold pony, with former event rider Alli Ellis from Dade City, Fla., topped the class by turning tightly and hugging the corners, clocking in at 46.530 for the blue.First to return to the ring for the jump-off was Phoebe Beachner of Olathe, Kan., on her own Koraal. Beachner piloted her mount through the shortened course, smoothly executing each rollback turn. They turned in a neat, fault-free round in 50.976 to take the lead. Next up was Grant Anderson of New Canaan, Conn., on Skelton W, owned by Silvermine Farm Inc. They galloped through the timers to stop the clock at 52.34, two seconds behind Beachner. Ellis and the seasoned chestnut Pony Jumper “Moxie” jumped next. They turned like a sportscar, shaving four seconds off the leading time as they crossed the timers in 46.530, which would prove to be the time to beat. Only one additional trip would be double clear. Consistent winner this circuit, Anderson returned on his second jump-off mount, Iczing. They left out a stride in the combination, going wide to recover and finishing in 47.468, just behind Ellis for second place. Boechner finished third with Koraal and Anderson and Skelton W were fourth. “I’m so lucky to have this pony and my trainer, Grant Pennington, who has been working with me for the last six weeks,” said a thankful Ellis. “Winning the Classic means the world to me, and it’s a great start to my jumping career. Flint Strikes OCALA – manda Flint of Long Valley, N.J., finished the Thursday, Feb. 25, $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix with three horses in the ribbons, including the first-place title with her own VDL Wittinger. Mary Lisa Leffler of Brookeville, Md., was second on Bling Bling, owned by Rolling Acres, and thirdplace went to German equestrian Christian Heineking, riding from Weatherford, Texas, aboard NKH Calango, owned by NKH LLC. Canadian course designer Danny Foster set an inviting 16-effort course in the Grand Prix ring at HITS Post Time Farm. Eight jumped clear in the first round to advance to the jump-off. The jump-off proved to be quite challenging, with only two riders going clean in the second round. Flint was first to contest the shortened course on Coverboy, owned by The Coverboy Group. Three rails earned her 12 faults, for the eventual eighth-place spot. Next to return to the ring was Heineking piloting

Though certainly not a surprise, it is still always amazing to see our in-state thoroughbred industry numbers in terms of how they fit with and relate to Florida’s economy. A recent 2013 conservative study conducted by nationally acclaimed pari-mutuel and gaming economists Cummings & Associates of horse breeds from the pari-mutuel industry based in the Sunshine State provided a handful of very impressive equine economic impacts including:

■ $1 billion per year of Economic Impact ■ More than $400 million expended per year in local salaries and payroll taxes ■ More than 12,000 jobs ■ An annual economic impact state-wide far in excess of coveted baseball spring training

Planning Ahead Microchip Educational Effort Underway Ahead of 2018 Mandate LEXINGTON, KY. – n light of the recently approved rule change that will require microchipping for all horses competing at USEF-rated hunter/jumper competitions in December 2018, the United States Hunter Jumper Association is collaborating with competition managers to offer discounted microchipping for those who would like to get a head start on the rule. The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center and Gulf Coast Classic Company will both be offering microchipping education – microchipping for less than $30, scanning to determine if there is a microchip, or answering questions about the microchipping process – for exhibitors. “We are delighted to have these two circuits join in helping members navigate the rule that will take preliminary effect in December 2017 and then full effect December 2018,” said Mary Babick, member of the USEF Horse Recording and ID Task Force and vice president of USHJA Hunter. “This provides members competing at these shows the opportunity to get a jumpstart on the rule well before it goes into effect.” Dr. Patrick Cleveland at the Gulf Coast Winter Series in Gulfport, Miss., will be available to offer this service throughout the remainder of the winter series. At the Annex office on the Winter Equestrian Festival

show grounds in Wellington, Palm Beach Equine Clinic veterinarians are offering microchipping clinics on Wednesday, March 9, and Wednesday, March 23, from 10 a.m. until noon. Earlier this year, the USEF Board of Directors approved three rule changes that would bring microchipping to hunter/jumper competitions. The three rule change proposals (EQ 103.2 - Tracking No. 295-15; HU 101.2 - Tracking No. 347-15; JP 100.2 - Tracking No. 366-15) state that in the 2018 competition year (Dec. 1, 2017 – Nov. 30, 2018) “all horses competing in classes that require USHJA registration must provide a microchip number that verifies their animal’s identity in order to compete for points, money won or be eligible for Federation and/or USHJA programs and awards where horses are required to be recorded or registered.” The 2018 competition year will act as a transitional year, where, in order to collect points, horses must provide a microchip number. Beginning with the 2019 competition year, all horses competing at a USEF licensed competition will be required to provide a microchip number or they will not be permitted to compete. The change does not apply to breed-restricted competitions offering hunter, jumper or hunt-seat equitation classes. HCD

Humble Beginning In Florida H ITS, Inc. is a special events management company primarily focused on producing hunter/jumper horse shows. Based in upstate New York in the village of Saugerties, HITS produced its first horse show circuit in Gainesville, Fla. in 1982. Many consider Florida to be the heart of HITS shows, which were originally produced in Gainesville in the ‘80s and then moved to Ocala in the mid-‘90s to accommodate increasing numbers and the need for rings and stabling. Since then, HITS has grown into a nationwide company with world-class hunter-jumper circuits in California, Florida, Arizona, New York and Virginia. In 2002, HITS moved to Ocala’s Post Time Farm and created a show jumping haven. Boasting 450 lush acres, the show grounds welcome all levels and kinds, from short stirrup to Olympic athletes, national champion campaigners to local baby greens. HITS produces three of the richest grand prix in the world with the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix in Thermal, Calif., the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix in Ocala, and the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties – all forming the Triple Crown of Show Jumping. The Great American $1 Million Grand Prix in Ocala is planned for March 27 which is the second jewel of the Triple Crown of show jumping. This is a fitting connection in Florida, as the state is also the birthplace of the 1978 American Triple Crown winner in thoroughbred racing, the great champion Affirmed, and served as the early training grounds for 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. The Grand Prix welcomes international talent from all corners of the world. The HITS Championship also hosts the HITS Saugerties $250,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Prix, as well as the crown jewels of the hunter discipline with the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final and the Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final. In 2011, HITS Inc. expanded its event-management repertoire into endurance sports and HITS Endurance was born. Under the HITS Endurance umbrella, both HITS Triathlon Series and HITS Running Festivals present top-notch triathlon and running races throughout the U.S. The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup found a home at HITS Post Time Farm during Week V of HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. On Friday, Feb. 19, international teams battled it out for global fame and their piece of a $200,000 purse. The key to HITS’ success is its strategy of producing a series of horse shows over continuous weeks, in desirable destinations, with first-class competition facilities and unmatched professional operations. Additionally, HITS offers competitive opportunities for riders in a broad range of ages and skill levels. Thomas G. Struzzieri has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of HITS since its inception. He has served on the Board of Directors of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) as well as its Competition Management Committee. He also served as chairman of USEF Zone 2. HITS has a professional, full-time staff of 35 employees, including a complete administrative staff, located at the company’s headquarters in Saugerties. Their level of experience and dedication guarantees superior execution of the details of all HITS horse shows. HCD
