The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association is a not-for-profit association with the mission of promoting the Florida thoroughbred worldwide. The FTBOA represents thoroughbred breeders and owners internationally who breed, raise, sell, train and race thoroughbreds born in the state of Florida. In 2015, the FTBOA was awarded Florida Association of the Year by the Florida Society of Association Executives and the Non-Profit of the Year by the Ocala/Marion County Chamber and Economic Partnership, a prestigious honor considering there are more than 1,000 non-profits in the county. Florida is one of the top thoroughbred breeding regions in the world. Ocala, in Marion County, is the heart of thoroughbred breeding in the state, trademarked as the Horse Capital of the World® because it has more horses and ponies than any other county in the United States. It is the home to the FTBOA, the Florida Thoroughbred Museum and Gallery, Ocala Breeders’ Sales, top breeding operations, elite veterinarians, research facilities and an abundance of supporting suppliers. Florida is one of the top ranking jurisdictions in foal production in North America and annually ranks equally as high with thoroughbred runners, winners and stakes winners. In fact, Florida has produced more Kentucky Derby winners than any state outside Kentucky with Needles in 1956, Carry Back (’61), Foolish Pleasure (’75), Unbridled (’90), Silver Charm (’97) and the 11th Triple Crown winner Affirmed (’78). Triple Crown champion American Pharoah also has Florida ties with his historical Florida bloodlines including Florida-bred classic-winning champion Unbridled. American Pharoah also spent his early training days in Citra, part of Florida’s training center hub in Marion County. Continued on page 4

FLORIDA’S POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES AND INCENTIVES 99,000 thoroughbreds - $2.7 billion total economic impact 717,000 acres of land used by equines - 23,048 total employment effect
NATURAL ATTRIBUTES Florida has a mild climate meaning horses training in the state miss very few days of training due to weather/frozen ground and is suitable for mares in foal. Limestonerich soil and spring-fed aquifers contribute to the growth of strong, healthy horses.
Florida has a tax friendly, pro-business environment Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services provides a strong agricultural business climate. ■ No tax on stallion seasons ■ Horses purchased from original breeder are sales tax exempt ■ Florida’s greenbelt exemption provides property tax breaks for Florida horse farms ■ Certain farm equipment is also exempt from state sales tax or receives special treatment. ■ No personal state income tax ■ No individual capital gains tax ■ Feed/animal health items are tax exempt ■ Affordable worker’s comp insurance and insurance in general
FLORIDA BOASTS OF EXCELLENT SPECIALIZED FACILITIES ■ Ocala is a concentrated breeding region and has more horse/ponies that any other county in the U.S. so there are a wealth of veterinary specialists, veterinary reproductive services, training centers, tack and feed shops which leads to a competitive marketplace and good pricing for horse owners ■ Florida produces 9% of the annual foal crop in North America so there are a large number of excellent mare care facilities for breeders ■ In season, Florida has more than 15,000 thoroughbreds-in-training in training centers over dirt, turf and artificial surfaces and there is an abundance of training center options for all price points 18 • Florida Thoroughbred Industry Guide
