Kudos Across the Board T he 33rd year of the Florida Sire Stakes is now in the books and there is plenty to look back on in terms of success. First let’s recognize that Gulfstream Park did a wonderful job in hosting the event for the first time after the series had been run exclusively as the Florida Stallion Stakes at Calder Casino and Race Course during the first 32 years of the FSS. The management team behind the Hallandale Beach oval did a good job of promoting the event in the Miami area and the Gulfstream Park brand proved a positive with those wagering on the event at off-track sites both in Florida and throughout North America. The Gulfstream Park racing department did a great job of attracting full fields for each of the races and the marketing and promotions department went the extra mile in hosting a horsemen’s and breeders’ cocktail party in their Sport of Kings room. Fred Brei and his Jacks or Better Farm in Ocala and trainer Stanley Gold continued their success in the Florida Sire Stakes, together breaking the record for most wins during the history of the series. Each set the standard in their respective owner and trainer categories at

“After 33 years, it looks as if the Florida Sire Stakes is strong and getting stronger. And that can only be good for the FTBOA and you, the members. ” 16 FSS victories. Brei and Gold together won four of the six races this year with Sing Praises winning two legs and Twotwentyfive A and Leap Year Luck one each. Owner-breeder Tracy Pinchin and her trainer-husband Jose won the other two races in the series with their nice filly Holywell, proving one does not have to be among larger breeders in the state to have success in the FSS. While none of the four winners of the six races elected to ship to Southern California early this month for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, after the third legs of the series, both Pinchin and Brei said they had Delta Downs on their minds for the future of Holywell and Sing Praises respectively. That would be the $1 million Delta

6 THE FLORIDA HORSE • NOVEMBER 2014

Downs Jackpot for Sing Praises and the $400,000 Delta Downs Princess for Holywell, both Grade 3 races to be run Nov. 22 at the Vinton, La., track. Le bon temps roule for the Florida-breds that night. While the Pinchins and Brei had great success in this year’s Florida Sire Stakes, it does not compare to the sweep of the entire series by stallions standing at Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud in Ocala. Not only was every one of the four winners of the six races by Journeyman stallions, but in two of the legs, the top three finishers were sired by those standing at the Ocala nursery and they had an exacta in another. Sing Praises and Leap Year Luck are by Hear No Evil while Twotwentyfive A is by Awesome of Course. Holywell is by Exclusive Quality. That is the first time that one stallion station roster has produced every winner of the Florida Sire Stakes in a given year. In addition to the purses of the Florida Sire Stakes being raised from $1 million last year to $1.4 million this year—which was presented by the FTBOA, Gulfstream Park and the FHBPA—there was also a $5,000 FSS purse supplement for 30 maiden special weight races run at Gulfstream before the series began. The supplements, for only FSS eligible horses, which are FTBOA registered and sired by FTBOA registered sires, started in April and each of the races was set at four and one-half furlongs. That was an additional $150,000 that was available to Florida horsemen. In the future, there will be additional FSS money paid out in races for older horses, so the FSS is no longer just a program for juveniles. Finally, for the third legs of the series this year, the FTBOA and Gulfstream Park partnered for a VIP member day at the races that included an Equestrian bus trip from Ocala, stable area, jockeys’ room and announcer’s booth tours and a day at the races for the FTBOA members and guests in the track’s luxurious Ten Palms trackside dining room. So after 33 years, it looks as if the Florida Sire Stakes is strong and getting stronger. And that can only be good for the FTBOA and you, the members. Hope to see you in the winners’ circle, on the bus, in the paddock or at the cocktail party next year. Salute! ■

Florida FOCUS Compiled by Brock Sheridan & Mike Mullaney

Florida-bred Less Than Perfect never gave pacesetting Break in the Fever a breather, took the lead coming off the turn and easily held Bourbon Cowboy safe to win the $100,000 Fitz Dixon Jr. Memorial Stakes at Presque Isle by 2¼ lengths Sept. 25. Bred by Aureliano Noguez-Morales, Less Than Perfect is a chestnut son of Pleasantly Perfect – Special Date, by Aragorn (Ire.), who is owned by Clyde Rice and trained by Kevin Rice, Clyde’s grandson. Clyde Rice operates the Indian Prairie Ranch in Ocala. The Dixon Memorial is for 2-year-olds and it attracted a field of 12 going 6½ furlongs. Willie Martinez had the mount on Less Than Perfect. Martinez climbed aboard Less Than Perfect under colors for the first time that night night and the pair proved a perfect match. They stalked the leader through a quarter in :22 1/5 and a half in :45, then led the parade with six furlongs in 1:09 3/5 before finishing the race in 1:16 1/5. The winner paid $9 and earned $60,000. Bourbon Cowboy, who challenged but was denied by Less Than Perfect, held the place by four lengths over Draw Nigh. Break in the Fever faded to fourth. ■

Florida-bred Manchurian High

won two-of-six and was off the board just once, finishing ninth in the July 6, Grade 1 United Nations to Main Sequence, who won the Sept. 27 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1). Manchurian High paid $14.20. ■

Pleasant Strike Has First Winner The first winner for the Ocala-based stallion Pleasant Strike came Sept. 13 when the 2-year-old filly Graciela Mia came from far back to take the Group 3 Clasico Lanzarina at La Rinconada in Venezuela. Graciela Mia is a Venezuelan-bred out of

the Langfuhr mare Crafty Diane. The 10-year-old Pleasant Strike is a son of Smart Strike – Colonella, by Pleasant Colony. In residence at Northwest Stud since 2012, he stood for a $2,500 fee this year. Graciela Mia won by a 1½ lengths and ran about six furlongs (1,200 meters) in 1:14 1/5. ■

Hubba Shake Wins Armed Forces The Oct. 4 finale of the Florida Sire Stakes series was a celebration of the best of the state-bred 2-year-olds, but it would be a mistake to overlook Hubba Shake’s victory versus open company in one of the supporting features, the $75,000 Armed Forces. Hubba Shake was bred by Farnsworth Stable and is owned by Miller Racing LLC, which is composed of Farnsworth owners Myron and Robert Miller of Palm Beachk Sent off as the third choice at 9-2, Hubba Shake and the field of nine others contested the Armed Forces through the beginnings of a strong but mercifully brief rain shower. The Laurel Turf Cup was one of six turf stakes at Laurel Saturday. Ahead of only one runner for most of the contest, Manchurian High carried Sheldon Russell to victory in 2:27.91 over the firm turf, beating Calvados by a neck, with St. Albans Boy another half-length back in third. The gelding finished third in the 2012 Laurel Turf Cup at odds of 97-1, beaten a neck in a three-way photo when in the barn of J.B. Secor. Kurtinecz worked for Secor and purchased Manchurian High from her former boss 10 months ago. In six starts this year, he has

Classic Point paid $13.60 and earned $60,000, increasing her career account to $368,034. She has won six of her 29 starts. Unbound rallied from last in the fivehorse field to finish a length in front of favored Voodoo Tales with Wildcat Lily fourth and Katie’s Garden fifth.■

Shields’ Fla. Homebred Makes Point in Punkin Pie

Florida-bred East Hall might be one of those throwback thoroughbreds, similar to those of bygone days who thrived on travel and hard work. In his 18th career start and ninth of the year, the 3-year-old gelding continued on a Derby path, upsetting the Oct. 4, Grade 2, $500,000 Indiana Derby at Indiana Grand. Bred in Florida by Mary K. Haire and trained by Bill Kaplan, the chestnut by Winding Oaks stallion Graeme Hall out of the Sultry Song mare East Long Lake has been traveling out of state of late, competing in the Ohio Derby, which he won at Thistledown, and the Super Derby (G2), which he lost to Vicar’s in Trouble at Louisiana Downs on Sept. 6. That race was his most recent going into the Indiana Derby, and Vicar’s in Trouble, who had cut out his own Derby trail before their first meeting in Louisiana, was back for more. Having defeated East Hall last out, Vicar’s

Florida-bred Classic Point

A year and the addition of blinkers is what the Florida-bred Classic Point needed to avenge her 2013 loss in Belmont Park’s Punkin Pie. The 5-year-old mare led from start to finish in the Oct. 13 renewal of the sevenfurlong event for older fillies and mares, registering a comfortable 6¼-length victory. Classic Point, owned and bred by Joseph Shields, led at every pole, tripping the timer in :22.94, :45.75, 1:09.99 and finishing the contest in 1:22.43. The daughter of Flatter out of Discerning, by Langfuhr, is under the care of Jimmy Jerkens, who took over the training duties from his father, Allen, this spring. She finished fifth of six in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom on Sept. 20, her lone previous try for the younger Jerkens. Prior to the Gallant Bloom, Classic Point had put in two disappointing efforts at Belmont since arriving from winter quarters at Gulfstream Park. The advantage came early for Classic Point, who decisively outbroke her rivals from the gate, repulsed a challenge from Wildcat Lily at the half-mile pole, and came away in the stretch, even as Ortiz dropped his stick.

East Hall Thriving on Tough Campaign

in Trouble was naturally favored over his rival in the Indiana Derby, going off at 2-1. However, there was a new shooter in this race as Atreides, winner of his three career races by a combined margin of nearly 26 lengths, came north from his Gulfstream base. He was sent off at even-money. Luis Saez aboard East Hall sending his mount from the break and chasing Vicar’s in Trouble and rider Rosie Napravnik through fractions of :24.42, :48.06, and 1:11.91. Never more than a length off the frontrunner, Saez and East Hall appeared to have the leader in their sights but just at that moment they drifted out

off a victory in sloppy going and no prior turf experience. He now has two wins from four starts with earnings of $73,755. The runner-up, The Big Mystery, had 2¾ lengths on third-place Touchdown Kitten. In the companion race, the $75,000 Our Dear Peggy for 2-year-old fillies, Goodwood Racing’s Red Sashay tracked down the 15-1 chance Like a Queen to win by a neck, getting the mile in 1:38.85. ■

Florida-bred East Hall

and Vicar’s in Trouble opened two lengths, getting the mile in 1:35.97. East Hall bumped with Just Call Kenny, who was drifting in as he launched his own bid outside of the top pair. The brush took steam out of Just Call Kenny’s rush but Saez regrouped and straightened East Hall. They collared the tiring leader and won by a widening length, getting the mile and a sixteenth in 1:42.24.

Uncaptured, Multiple Graded StakesWinning Millionaire, To Stand at Ocala Stud Uncaptured, the multiple graded Stakes-Winning millionaire and 2012 Canadian Horse of the Year as a juvenile, will stand stud at J. Michael O’Farrell Jr.’s Ocala Stud in Florida. A stud fee will be announced at a later date. “Uncaptured was his sire Lion Heart’s highest-priced yearling of his crop, and you can see why when you look at him,” J. Michael O’Farrell, Jr. said. Trained by Mark Casse, Uncaptured was one of North America’s best 2-year-olds of 2012, winning six of seven starts including five

stakes victories. His stakes wins impressively came on both dirt and Polyrtrack, and ranged from 5½ furlongs to 11⁄16 miles. Upcaptured capped off his 2-year-old campaign by sweeping Churchill Downs graded stakes for 2-year-olds, winning the Iroquois. (G3) and Kentucky Jockey Club. (G2). Prior to that pair of graded wins, Uncaptured broke his maiden in his debut at Woodbine and then proceeded to reel off wins in the $150,000 Clarendon, $150,000 Vandal, and $168,000 Swynford to begin his career 4-for-4. Owned by John Oxley, Uncaptured was named Canadian champion 2-Year-Old Colt and Canadian Horse of the Year at the annual Sovereign Awards, becoming the first juvenile since 1984 to win Horse of the Year honors in Canada. As a 3-year-old, Uncaptured was runner-up in the Spiral (G2) Uncaptured on the Kentucky Derby trail in his seasonal debut, before going on to become a classic winner in Canada with a win in the $500,000 Prince of Wales. Earlier this year at 4, he finished a half-length behind Palace Malice in the one-mile Gulfstream Park H. (G2), earning a 102 Beyer after they finished the mile in 1:33 4/5. Uncaptured recently retired with a record of 7-3-3 from 18 starts and career earnings of $1,072,366. In 2011, Uncaptured was the highest-priced yearling by Lion Heart when he was purchased by Oxley and Casse for $290,000 at Keeneland. The dark bay colt hails from the multiple stakes-producing Arch mare Captivating. For more information about Uncaptured, or to schedule an appointment for inspection, please contact David or Joe O’Farrell at 352237-2171, or visit OcalaStud.com. ■ BURNS PHOTO

The winner paid $35.80. Vicar’s in Trouble had 2¼ lengths on Just Call Kenny and was clearly best of the rest. Atreides never got untracked under the lights, running sixth throughout. Victory was worth $298,175 to East Hall’s owners, Jack Hendricks and Roger Justice. East Hall’s career record reads 18-4-3-4 with earnings of $562,545. Greg Gilchrist paid $23,000 buying East Hall out of the OBS 2012 August yearling sale. Hendricks and Justice bought him for $55,000 at the OBS spring sale of 2-year-olds in 2013. ■

her victory coming in her debut over a synthetic course at Lingfield. She then finished sixth of 21 in the Group 3 Albany at Ascot, and dropped a half-length decision in a novice event at Haydock on Aug. 4, bringing her British campaign to a close. Those two most-recent efforts were on the turf. Stevens said that he and Sheikh Fahad, in whose Qatar Racing colors she runs, had been discussing the Breeders Cup and a trip to Santa Anita, mulling over the option of the $2 million, Grade 1 Juvenile Fillies on Nov. 1, or the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Mile on Oct. 31, however an ankle injury in October sideline thos plans. The Daily Racing Form chart of the Alcibiades acknowledges that it was a good start for all but Peace and War, who fell back as longshot Take Charge Brandi led early with second choice Fashion Alert next and the 2-1 favorite Gap Year traveling in midpack through fractions of :22.54, :45.60 and 1:10.60 over a wet-fast track. It was at the three-quarter marker that Fashion Alert made her move, taking over between poles with the Florida-bred Naval Command traveling with her, three wide, passing the mile marker at 1:38.31. The field fanned out in the stretch run, erecting a six-horse wall at the three-sixteenth pole that appeared to seal Peace and War’s fate, but neither she nor Leparoux gave up and as soon as a hole appeared they sprinted through it to catch Top Decile.

By MIKE MULLANEY ike a high-level diplomat, Peace and War has shuttled back and forth over the pond since she was taken off Sally Andersen’s River Mist Farm in Ocala, brought to last year’s Keeneland yearling sale in September and sold for $300,000. Not long after the hammer fell she was sent to England where she came under the care of trainer Olly Stevens, who a couple weeks ago thought that maybe this Florida-bred daughter of the hot stallion War Front might be something special, that maybe she deserved a crack at the Breeders’ Cup. Believers found confirmation and skeptics were converted after her scintillating performance in the Grade 1, $400,000 Darley Alcibiades on Oct. 3. Falling as far back as 13 lengths behind the early leaders, she made a dramatic move on the turn, weaving in and out of traffic under a heady ride from Julien Leparoux. Losing time and ground when momentarily blocked by a wall of six rivals, she found a small hole deep into the I was terrified. Membership is developing programs designed to save members money and also create growth opportunities as FTBOA continues to add value for each member. FTBOA members will receive a survey in renewal letters in January asking for feedback about proposed programs and workshops. The programs are designed for members to be present, however, the goal is also to provide summaries from programs online and in our e-newsletter for those who cannot attend in person. A refresher for most business leaders, the educational workshops are designed to provide savings tips and best practices from experts on tax, insurance, feeding, vet services, horse productivity and business management. The FTBOA is identifying opportunities to help businesses grow including developing a low cost discount program for members to develop robust websites that will increase exposure to your services. While many farms and operations have websites, this program takes advantage of online and phone application trends that are vital to make your business appear at the top of web searches. The FTBOA also will be providing marketing expertise sessions to help you build your brand to stand out from non-FTBOA member operations. From creating a positive company image with curb appeal at your physical address but also your virtual address, these sessions are geared to create a level of awareness and exposure without a high price tag. The survey also will be asking members what additional discounts they would like to see added to our fast growing discount program. From four discounts in 2012 to more than 50 this year, FTBOA strives to target discounts of importance to our current and future members.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE FROM ANNUAL MEETING

The FTBOA membership has increased by 4% thanks to a concerted effort to promote the benefits of membership to new owners and to clients of FTBOA members. In addition, the discount program has grown and continues to do so to assist members in saving money. FTBOA has also added 126 new members to enrollment. Because of the growth, FTBOA is unveiling a New Member Mentor program designed to pair existing members with new members based on their interest area. Members who would like to mentor a new member can contact FTBOA at 352-629-2160 or e-mail Sally Moehring, membership assistant, at smoehring@ftboa.com. The first contact will be to call new members and welcome them to the FTBOA, then schedule a one-on-one meeting with mentors and in the Spring the FTBOA will host a New Member and Mentor Reception.

Recapping Journeyman Stallions Dominate By JOANN GUIDRY et’s just call it the Florida Sire Stakes: Journeyman Stud edition. Stallions who currently stand at Journeyman Stud sired the winners of all six inaugural FSS races. And in two of the stakes, it was a Journeyman Stud stallions trifecta with a 1-2 finish in one and 1-3 finish in two others. All of this is all the more amazing considering that Brent and Crystal Fernung, who have been involved in the Florida thoroughbred industry for more than 35 years, only established Journeyman Stud in 2007. But in an interesting twist of fate, there is a Fernung connection to the very beginning of the Florida Stallion Stakes. When the Florida Stallion Stakes was originally conceived in 1979 by then Ocala-based breeder/owner Dan Lasater, Brent Fernung was Lasater Farm’s broodmare manager. “I actually sat in on the conversation that Dan had with Calder’s Kenny Noe,” Fernung said. “What Dan wanted was a series of races to showcase his farm’s stallions and Noe told him that a private series like that wasn’t going to happen. Dan said, ‘Then let everyone run in my race. We’ll outrun them anyway.’ ” 16 THE FLORIDA HORSE • NOVEMBER 2014

Holywell Proves Best in My Dear Girl By BROCK SHERIDAN

ockey Orlando Bocachica proved that pace makes the race and owner-breeder Tracy Pinchin proved one does not have to be among the state’s leading breeders to win a leg of the Florida Sire Stakes. In fact, Pinchin and her trainer-husband Jose, won their second consecutive Florida Sire Stakes race when their Holywell won the $358,000 My Dear Girl leg of the three-race filly division of rich series. The Florida Sire Stakes, for FTBOA registered Florida-bred 2-yearolds by FTBOA registered Florida stallions, also has a three leg division for colts and geldings. The victory by Holywell also kept alive the streak by Ocala stallion station Journeyman Stud, whose stallions by days end had had sired all six winners in the series this year. (See sidebar) Holywell is by the Journeyman Stud stallion Exclusive Quality and is out of the Gold Case mare All Saint’s Day, making Holywell a half-sister to Sinister Brew, who is by Milwaukee Brew. Run at 1 1/16 miles on a fast main track, the My Dear Girl featured a field of eight fillies with Holywell and Bocachica breaking best of all from the inside post. Those two led the field around the clubhouse turn with 8-5 favorite Moment of Delight giving chase a length back in second with Jamie’s Dancer also in pursuit on the inside and Awesome Ice on the outside. The leaders continued in that order as they raced the first quarter-mile in a sluggish :24.96

ulfstream Park ended its 2014 summer meet in style Oct. 9 with Sing Praises and Holywell winning their respective divisions of the Florida Sire Stakes. Gulfstream played host to the Sire Stakes for the first time in the history of the series. Total handle for the series finale at Calder last year was $1.8 million over nine races. Meanwhile, Gulfstream on the same day in 2013 handled $2 million over eight races. The 2014 12-race program Lonny Powell handled a total of $6.3 million.

Recapping

Lasater’s idea came to fruition through the efforts of Calder management, then Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association president Fred W. Hooper, Florida breeding industry columnist Chuck Tilley and Tartan Farms president John Nerud. And in the inaugural 1982 Florida Stallion Stakes, Lasater’s contention proved prophetic. Lasater Farm stallions Raise a Bid and Great Above were well-represented by their progeny, accounting for four wins in the six-race series. El Kaiser, by Raise a Bid, won the Dr. Fager Stakes and Affirmed Stakes. Crystal Rail, by Great Above, tallied wins in the Desert Vixen Stakes and Susan’s Girl Stakes. But Journeyman Stud stallions’ progeny have bested that showing in the re-branded Florida Sire Stakes. “It’s certainly been very gratifying to see these great results for our stallion station,” said Fernung. “And, of course, we have to thank the stallion owners who gave us the opportunity to stand these great stallions.”

on their way to the long run down the backstretch. As they approached the far turn, Holywell maintained a length lead with Moment of Delight still right there along with Awesome Ice in third and Jamie’s Dancer fourth as they went the first half-mile in an even more pedestrian-like :50.58. Around the far turn, Holywell began to extend her lead to two lengths and by the time they turned for home, she began to look stronger with every stride. Moment of Delight gave chase down the stretch as Awesome Ice and Jamie’s Dancer gave away. At the wire, Holywell was a 1¼ lengths in front of Moment of Delight in second, some nine lengths ahead of Awesome Ice in third. The running time for the My Dear Girl was 1: 46.08. After the race, Bocachica explained that the victory had come as no coincidence. “I talked to [trainer] Jose [Pinchin] this morning and he said, ‘Try to go for the lead and see what happens,’” Bocachica said. “We were on the rail and we broke good and we were able to slow it down. The half [in :50.58] was perfect. I started asking her a little on the turn, but we were never in trouble.” After coming into the My Dear Girl off of a victory in the $259,000 Susan’s Girl leg of the Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream on Sept. 6, Holywell was surprisingly let go as the third choice in the My Dear Girl at 4-1. That resulted in Holywell paying $10.20 to win, $4.60 to place and $3.40 to show. Moment of Delight returned $3.20 and $2.80 while Awesome Ice returned $3.80. Holywell earned $215,301 for her victory in the My Dear Girl, pushing her career earnings to $400,225. It was her third win from five starts.

“I believe when you’re looking at this model - with 12 races at one track rather than 17 at two and with total handle this year of more than $6 million - you would have to say it works,” The Stronach Group Chief Operations Officer and Gulfstream Tim Ritvo Park President Tim Ritvo said. Lonny Powell, CEO & Executive Vice President of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, said; “We’re thrilled with the first-year partnership with Gulfstream Park and the Florida Sire Stakes.

Similar to Bocachica, trainer Jose Pinchin said he was fairly confident coming into the My Dear Girl. “She ran exactly the way I expected her to run. Breaking from the one hole like a bullet. She did everything I hoped she would. It feels great to win this race. It’s the biggest win of my career and it feels great because I race here in Florida, so I only buy Florida-breds.” ■

Florida-bred Holywell

There’s been competitive races, great field size, and the hospitality at Gulfstream has been great. We’re looking forward to working with Gulfstream in the future and building upon this race series and our Fl-bred program in general.” Sing Praises, a 2-year-old chestnut colt bred by Jacks or Better Farm and trained by Stanley Gold, won the $350,000 In Reality leg of the Sire Stakes by a nose over Royal Squeeze. In the $350,000 My Dear Girl leg of the Sire Stakes, Holywell, bred by Tracy Pinchin and trained by Jose Pinchin, finished first. ■ THE FLORIDA HORSE • NOVEMBER 2014 19

Recapping Sing Praises Fights Back to Take In Reality

wner-breeder Fred Brei’s Jacks or Better Farm and trainer Stanley Gold continued their winning ways in the Florida Sire Stakes Oct. 4, taking the $372,000 In Reality leg of the male division of the Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park with Sing Praises. It was a record 16th victory for each in the 33-yearold series and they have also won four of the six legs run this year. It was also the second victory in the series for Sing Praises, who won the $112,000 Dr. Fager leg of the series on Aug. 9 at Gulfstream. He was also second by a neck to stablemate Twotwentyfive A in the second leg of the series this year, the Affirmed on Sept. 6. The Florida Sire Stakes is for FTBOA registered Florida-bred 2-year-olds by FTBOA registered Florida sires. The In Reality featured a field of 12 colts and geldings going 1 1/16 miles on a good main track.

Sing Praises broke best of all from post seven with jockey Ramsey Zimmerman aboard but they relinquished the early lead to Hear That Tune as they raced around the clubhouse turn. Boozin’ Time was matching strides with Hear That Tune on the front end as those two went the first quarter-mile in :23.30. The two leaders kept at each other down the backstretch as Royal Squeeze raced in third alongside Sing Praises in fourth as they went the first half-mile in :46.62. Around the far turn, Royal Squeeze made a move three-wide with Sing Praises just to his inside as Hear That Tune and Boozin Time fell back. Sing Praises and Royal Squeeze began to pull away down the stretch, then Sing Praises looked as if he had finished off Royal Squeeze inside the sixteenth pole. Suddenly, Jose Valdiva Jr. on Royal Squeeze swung his mount off the rail and made one final surge, hitting the

andolph and Nowicki are two Florida breeders who lived the dream with horses in the finals of the $1.4 million Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Oct. 4. Nowicki, along with her husband David and daughter Melissa Anthony, bred Stonestreet Stables’ Free Flying, and Randolph is the breeder of record of Moment of Delight. Both ran in the $350,000 My Dear Girl leg of the Sire Stakes with Moment of Delight finishing second to winner Holywell and Free Flying finishing out of the money. Lasater conceived the idea of the Sire Stakes series (formerly known as the Florida Stallion Stakes series) to help showcase Florida stallions and promote breeding in Florida. Over the past 32 years, it has served Florida breeders both large and small. This year’s Florida Sire Stakes featured 2-year-olds from some of Florida’s largest and most successful farms in Florida as well as from small breeders like Nowicki and Randolph. Nowicki has had horses for 60 years, first showing in Michigan and then breeding thoroughbreds on a small scale while she and her husband managed farms. “We don’t breed much,” she said. “Right now we only have two mares and the most we’ve had is four or five.” Nowicki purchased Free Flying’s mare, Free Hill, at the 2010 Ocala Breeders’ Sales when she was barren. The now 15-year-old Free Hill, a Canadian-bred daughter of Marquetry, originally was purchased by Eugene and Laura Melnyk in 2000. Free Hill won two of 11 starts. “She was classy from the beginning,” Nowicki said. “When we bought her, I think [Melnyk] had been downsizing for a while. She was such a big, beautiful mare. Gorgeous. And we bred her to Kantharos be-

wire in tandem with Sing Praises. When the photo finish was developed, Sing Praises was a nose in front of Royal Squeeze with Honor Earned another 3¼ lengths further back. The final time was 1:45.79. “I told you last time it wasn’t the distance,” Gold said in reference to Sing Praises losing in the Affirmed. “He just thought he had it. [Zimmerman] rode him smart today and had it when he needed it. I left Ramsey alone and said, ‘Ride it like you see it.’ “I couldn’t tell [who won]. Looking at the other one, his head was higher up and ours was down. I couldn’t tell. I’m always doom and gloom in those situations, unless it’s obvious.” “I didn’t think we had it,” Brei said. “But my daughter Terri said we got it, so I just believed her.” Asked about future plans for Sing Praises, both Gold and Brei said the Breeders’ Cup was not being considered. “I guess anyone who runs good in the Sire Stakes would look at the Delta Jackpot [$1 million, Grade 3 at

Delta Downs on Nov. 22],” Gold said. “Of course, we know what is here, so our main objective is try the good ones here – the Holy Bull [$400,000, Grade 2, Jan. 24] and the other ones here.” It was also a banner year during the Florida Sire Stakes for Journeyman Stud as every winner of the six races in the series was sired by a stallion that stands at the Ocala stallion station owned by Brent and Crystal Fernung. Sing Praises is by Hear No Evil and is out of Sacred Psalm, by Awesome of Course, who also stands at Journeyman. “Completely homebred. Through and through,” Brei, who bred Sing Praises under his Jacks or Better Farm banner, said. Sing Praises paid $13.80 to win, $6.80 to place and $4.60 to show. Royal Squeeze returned $7.80 to place and $6.60 to show while Honor Earned paid $5.60 to show. Sing Praises has three wins from five starts with two seconds. The $214,495 winner’s check increased his career earnings to $403,770.”■

can do it...and it’s so much fun.” cause that was a horse I followed when he was racing.” Kantharos currently stands at Ocala Stud. Free Flying, owned by Stonestreet Stables and trained by David Fawkes, finished fourth in her racing debut Aug. 7 before winning Sept. 6 by three lengths. “We’re so delighted the filly went to Stonestreet and David Fawkes,” Nowicki said. “They took their time with the filly and managed her so nicely. We went to see her at Calder and David Fawkes couldn’t have been nicer.” Randolph purchased Sweetness, the dam of Moment of Delight, from the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company after she was winless in eight starts. Like Nowicki, Randolph has been around horses for more than 30 years, mostly training and only getting into breeding about 10 years ago. “We’ve trained a lot of good ones but we’ve never had one we bred run for [$350,000],” Randolph said. “We bred her to [HallMarc Stallions stud] A.P. Warrior. It’s a crap shoot, but that’s what we do. You roll the dice and hope you get lucky.” After breaking her maiden by 4¾ lengths Aug. 16, Moment of Delight finished second three weeks later in the $250,000 Susan’s Girl Division of the Florida Sire Stakes.

“For us, it was a pretty big thing,” Randolph said. Nowicki is hoping her success sends a message to others. “I just hope more people nominate and others feel the same way I do about breeding here in Florida,” she said. “Not only is it a wonderful experience, but this shows that small breeders have a chance.” ■

ulfstream Park is off to a fast start in field sizes and handle for its inaugural Gulfstream Park West meet at the track of its neighbor and former rival Calder Casino & Race Course. Gulfstream and its parent company, The Stronach Group, are leasing Calder's racing operations and portions of the Calder property in Miami Gardens. They are using the name "Gulfstream Park West" for their 44-day meet that began Oct. 8 and will end Nov. 30. Through Oct, 19, the average number of starters per race was 9.2 over the Gulfstream Park West meet's first ten days. The average daily allsources handle for those days was $2.7 million with ten races each day. Gulfstream averaged 9.2 starters per race and $3.5 million in daily all-sources handle in its summer meet from July 1 to Oct 4. “We are very pleased and encouraged about Gulfstream Park West," P.J. Campo, Gulfstream's vice president of racing, said Oct. 18. "We didn't know what to expect. It was a new meet at a different track with a new name.” Campo said Gulfstream anticipates that field sizes will stay high and handle will keep growing partly because numerous trainers will soon be bringing more horses down to Florida from northern states That annual influx also will be for Gulfstream 's winter meet that will open Dec. 6 at its track in Hallandale Beach—eight miles east of Calder. Campo said average daily purses for the Gulfstream Park West meet will be in the $225,000 to $250,000 range. That includes Florida Owners Awards and will be similar to the Gulfstream summer meet.

Gulfstream is using the name Gulfstream Park West and the code "GPW" for its current meet and is limiting its use of the Calder name that is less attractive than Gulfstream to simulcast and ADW bettors. The new schedule, basically with 10 months at Gulfstream and two months at “the old Calder,” should provide long-sought stability for breeders, owners, trainers and fans following a four-year racing dates dispute between Gulfstream and Calder. The lease is part of the agreement the two tracks and their parents signed July 1, ending their 12 months of head-to-head weekend racing. continued on page 26 24 THE FLORIDA HORSE • DECEMBER 2010

Calder opened in 1971 and has used that name throughout its history. It will continue to use the Calder name for its casino, but not for racing. The official name for the property is still Calder Casino & Race Course, owned by Churchill Downs Inc., according to the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering. Races run during the meet will be under Calder's operating license and will be recognized by the state as Calder for accounting and reporting purposes.. A Florida law requires a pari-mutuel facility to have at least 40 live performances (i.e. race cards) each year to retain a casino license. The Stronach Group and CDI convinced the Florida DPMW to allow CDI to keep its casino even though it has leased the property's pari-mutuel business to a third party. At Calder this summer, Gulfstream and The Stronach Group spent $2.5 million refurbishing 15 barns, the turf course and portions of the ground floor of Calder's racing/grandstand building. That is the only part of the Calder building open to the public for the GP West meet. "They are doing everything the right way," trainer Marcus Vitali said on opening day, Oct. 8. Vitali has generally spent summers at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., and the remainder at Gulfstream and Calder. "I now plan to be down here year-round," he said. "There is no reason not to be in South Florida. If I want to run a horse in a stakes in another state, I can always ship out." Trainer/breeder Carlo Vaccarezza, based year-round at Gulfstream, said he expects the new year-round schedule will induce some other trainers to switch from part-year to full-year in South Florida. ■

Highlights of the GP West racing schedule highlights Nov. 8 -- Sunshine Millions Preview, administered by the FTBOA with eight $75,000 stakes races for Florida-breds. The Sunshine Millions will be Jan. 15 at Gulfstream, Nov. 22 -- $100,000 Tropical Turf Handicap (Grade 3) for 3year-olds and up and $100,000 My Charmer (Grade 3) for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, Nov. 29 -- Six stakes for 2-year-olds, all with $75,000 purses.

INDUSTRY NEWS

FTBOA Announces New Board Members

T

he Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association has announced five new board members that each have been elected to three-year terms. An elected member of the FTBOA Board of Directors is eligible to serve two consecutive terms before being required to step down for at least one year. Elected to the board were Barry Berkelhammer, Gilbert G. Campbell, Diane Parks, George Russell and Greg Wheeler. Campbell, Parks, Russell and Wheeler were incumbents while Berkelhammer was nominated to the run by the Board of Directors. FTBOA member Tim Mawhinney received enough signatures from membership to run for the board but was not elected. Berkelhammer will be serving on the 15-member board for the first time after being a member of the Association for more than 30 years. Berkelhammer is the current owner of AbraCadabra Farm located near Ocala in Marion County which he founded. Along with longtime business associate Gary Mottola, they have overseen the growth of the farm to more than 240 acres and the business has produced five Kentucky Derby starters and six Breeders’ Cup contenders. Campbell has been involved in the thoroughbred business since 1982 and has bred and/or raced 66 stakes winners including Marlin, winner of the 1996 Arlington Million, millionaire Blazing Sword as well as Ivanavinalot, Friel’s For Real, This One’s for Phil, Ryan’s For Real and Watch Me Go. Twice Campbell has been honored as the Florida Breeder of the Year by the FTBOA and was honored as the Florida Breeder of the Year once by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. TOBA also recognized Campbell as the national breeder of the year in 1997. Campbell is a past president of the FTBOA and currently serves on the Association’s Racing Committee. Parks is a self-professed farm girl having grown up on a cattle ranch in Ocala. She became interested in thoroughbreds when she married her late husband, Scott Dudley, the son of Jack Dudley, who raced Needles, the first Florida-bred to win the Kentucky Derby having done so in 1956, with partner Bonnie Heath as D & H Stables. Scott and Diane enjoyed substantial success managing the farm having produced Florida-bred Silver Charm, winner of the 1997 Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Now married to Jerry Parks of Parks Equine Insurance, she also serves on the FTBOA committee on thoroughbred retirement. 28 THE FLORIDA HORSE • NOVEMBER 2014

Russell, a past president and past vice president, and wife Karen purchased 158 acres in Ocala in 1987 and established Rustlewood Farm. They began in the thoroughbred business by buying four yearling fillies from Elmer Huebeck which yielded Rustlewood’s first stakes winner in All Considered, who also produced a number of winners for the Russell’s including stakes winner Consider Thesource. The Russells have also bred such standouts as Grade 1 winners Chaposa Springs and You and I, Group 2 winner Distinctly North and Grade 2 winner Mach Ride and Grade 3 winner Prudhoe Bay, who they currently campaign. Russell is the founder and current president of Russell Engineering and currently serves on the board of the Florida Transportation Builders Association, of which he is also a past Chairman of the Board. Wheeler and his wife, Donna, moved to Ocala in 2003 because of their passion for horses and started in the thoroughbred business by buying four yearlings at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company January sale. The Wheelers currently own and operate BridleOaks Farm Inc., in Ocala where they have a broodmare band of 11. They raise mostly commercial thoroughbreds but also keep a small lot for racing. Together they bred Jordy Y in Florida from the first crop of Congrats. Jordy Y went on to become graded stakes-placed and started in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Wheeler currently chairs the Charity, Social and Outreach Committee for the FTBOA. Rotating off the FTBOA board due to her expired term is Sheila DiMare, who along with her husband Jim, operate Rising Hill Farm in Ocala. DiMare has served two consecutive terms on the board and has also served on the Executive Committee of the FTBOA as Secretary for the past three years. DiMare races under the name of J.D. Farms and has bred or raised approximately 30 stakes winners including Grade 1-winning millionaire Captain Squire, Floridabred champion and Spinster Stakes (G1) winner Plenty of Light, gradedstakes winners El Cielo, Light Dancer, Wise Answer and Dansetta Light to name a few. DiMare is also a past vice president of the Florida Farm Managers Association and serves on the Marion County Extension Equine Program Advisory Committee. She is also on the board of the Race Track Chaplaincy of America Inc., Ocala Council. George Russell was re-elected as the President while Brent Fernung, who owns and operates Journeyman Stud, returns as the first vice-president. Dr. Phil Matthews, a past president of the FTBOA was re-elected as second vice president and Joseph M. O’Farrell III will now serve as secretary, filling the vacancy left by Sheila DiMare. Fred Brei, also a past president, will again serve as the treasurer.

The horses-of-racing-age auction, in which 50 horses were sold for $1,308,500, closed the October sales. The average was $26,170 and the buyback percentage was 27.5%. There were 130 horses sold during the consignor-preferred session, with sales totaling $2,136,400. Last year’s comparable session showed 121 horses being sold for a total of $2,724,500. This year’s average was $16,434; last year’s, $22,517. The buyback rate was 34% this year; it was 12.3% last year. At the open auction, 124 horses were sold for $608,900. Last year, 155 were sold for a total of $1,508,100. The average this year was $4,910; the average last year, $9,730. The buyback-percentage comparisons: 31.5% this year, 16.7% last year. “The numbers were up dramatically last year,” he said, “but that kind of market is very difficult to sustain. It took a breather this year.” Ventura said the lower end of the market dragged down the averages, but he is enthusiastic in looking forward to the next mixed sale, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 28 and 29. The salestopper, as expected, came out of the horsesof-racing-age session Oct. 15 when Gerald Frankel signed a check for $370,000 to purchase an unraced, unnamed 2-year-old full brother to Eclipse champion Stardom Bound, who numbered the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly among her multiple Grade 1 victories. Stardom Bound, who was purchased for $375,000 at OBS in 2008 as a 2-year-old in training, earned $1.8 million. She and her brother are by Tapit out of the Tarr Road mare My White Corvette. Entering the ring as Hip 532, the sales topper was consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, who also consigned the sales’ sixth-highest priced horse, another 2-year-old colt, Hip 561 by Arch out of Star Dixie, by Dixie Union. Jena Antonucci, Agent for Gallo Stable, made that purchase for $75,000. Woods had both of those juveniles breeze on the OBS track during the Under-Tack Show. The salestopper got three furlongs in :33 3/5; the Arch colt went a quarter-mile in :21 1/5. “That’s what this sale provides, an opportunity for these horses of racing age to breeze, to show what they can do on the racetrack,” Ventura said. “Without the opportunity to show their talents, it would have been more difficult to sell some of these horses at the price they were sold.”

Racing Age Session Boosts October Sale By MIKE MULLANEY he lofty numbers of the 2013 Fall Mixed Sale proved a tough act to follow for the Ocala Breeders Sales Co., but OBS president Tom Ventura was far from disconsolate in his recap of this year’s two-day auction, which concluded Oct. 15. “It’s hard to compare as this is the first year we had a “Racing Age” section in the Fall Mixed Sale, and there is also more variation of offerings in mixed sales from year to year,” he said. “You’re really not comparing apples to apples. The bidding for the higher-priced horses was competitive and resulted in solid prices.” Adding the horses-of-racing-age session to the October sales date was a roll of the dice for Ventura, whose sense of optimism was elevated by events down south. “One of the things that came into play in making that decision [to add the session] was the agreement reached between Gulfstream Park and Calder Race Course,” he said. “It brought a little more stability to South Florida. Fields are short, foal crops are down … For those reasons we thought the timing was right to add the horses of racing age to this sale.”

or a myriad of reasons, racehorses can have a relatively short racing shelf life. Some

are just not suited, mentally or physically, for the rigors of the sport. Others excel early on and then burn out quickly. A select few reach the high echelons of racing, only to

then become more valuable as a stallion or a broodmare than a racehorse. Then there are the old warriors. Usually geldings, they race on way past the industry's usual expiration date, often changing hands through the claiming ranks or private sales. They become barn and fan favorites, always giving it their best even in defeat. Some dip their hooves in stakes company with varying degrees of success. But on they run because being a racehorse has become their job. In the 2014 racing season to date, a group of seven Florida-breds have definitely earned the moniker of old warriors. For the purpose of

this article, a horse had to be seven years old or older and won at least one blacktype stakes race in 2014. Making up this distinguished class are: Jeranimo, Sneaking Uponyou,

Little Mike, Bim Bam, Good Lord, Wicked Tune and Hobo Ridge. At eight, Jeranimo and Sneaking Uponyou are the elder statesmen of the group with the rest all being seven years old. Four are geldings (Sneaking Uponyou, Little Mike, Good Lord & Hobo Ridge) while surprisingly three are stallions (Jeranimo, Bim Bam & Wicked Tune). Of the group, two (Little Mike and Wicked Tune) are still raced by their breeders. Jeranimo sold at public auction twice while Sneaking Uponyou, Good Lord and Hobo Ridge were all RNAs; Bim Bam was never offered at public auction and was sold privately by his breeder who initially raced him. All, except Jeranimo, have been racing since they were 2 years old. Careerwise as a group, they have made 310 starts, won 78 races, tallied 38 stakes wins, including 14 graded stakes wins, and earned a total of nearly $7.7 million. Good Lord has made the most starts with 62 and Little Mike the fewest with 29. Little Mike also has the most wins (14) and stakes wins (nine). Jeranimo holds the title of most graded-stakes wins with eight. Little Mike has earned the most with a career bankroll of $3.5 million. As for formal accolades, Little Mike was named the 2012 Florida-bred Horse of the Year, as well as that season's Florida-bred champion older male and male turf horse. Jeranimo was honored as the 2013 Florida-bred champion male turf horse. But championship titles are

just gravy when it comes to this stalwart group, who are racehorse versions of the Energizer bunny. Much to our delight, they continue to turn in age-defying performances and just keep running and running and running.

JERANIMO Good From the Get-Go Veteran turf runner Jeranimo did not make his first start until he was three. It was worth the wait. He not only broke his maiden quickly, but also posted a thirdplace finish in the 2009 San Felipe Stakes (G2). Since then, Jeranimo has proven his ability, tallying at least one graded stakes win each season from 2010-2014. His eight graded-stakes wins chronologically to date include: 2010 San Gabriel Stakes (G2) and Strub Stakes (G2); 2011 Oak Tree Mile (G2) and Citation Handicap (G2); 2012 Shoemaker Mile (G1); 2013 Eddie Read Stakes (G1) and San Gabriel Stakes (G2); 2014 San Gabriel Stakes (G2). To add icing to the stakes cake, Jeranimo has also recorded seven graded-stakes placings in his 40-start career with total earnings to date of $1,525,364. This season, Jeranimo has only made two starts to date, but again he knows how to win the big ones. On Jan. 4, he won his third San Gabriel Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park. Raced by B.J. Wright and Robert LaPenta, Jeranimo won by a length and a quarter in 1:46 for the nine-furlong turf test. Finishing second was Slim Shady (GB) with Artic

North settling for third. Trained by Michael Pender, Jeranimo has banked $124,000 on the season to date. Bred by Joe and Phyllis Bryant's BryLynn Farm, Jeranimo is a 2006 horse by Congaree out of the stakesproducing Jeblar mare Jera. Consigned by On Course Sales, agent, to the 2007 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's August yearling sale, Jeranimo sold for $50,000 to Quarter Pole Investments. At the 2008 Barretts May juvenile sale, Jeranimo was consigned by Eddie Woods, agent, and was bought for $70,000 by Rick Taylor, agent, for the late B.J. Wright. The latter, who was chairman of Pasadena, Calif.-based LifeSource Whole-House Water Systems, raced Jeranimo solely from 2009 until late January, 2014. At that time, current co-owner Robert LaPenta bought a significant share in Jeranimo. JERANIMO 2006 bay horse by Congaree – Jera, by Jeblar Breeder: BryLynn Farm Owners: B.J. SNEAKING UPONYOU Without Deception Sneaking Uponyou started his racing career a little slowly. His best showing as juvenile was a third-place finish and he didn't break his maiden until he was 3.

But since then, the Snuck In gelding has made his presence known every time he steps on the racetrack. His breakthrough year was 2010, where he won the Turf Dash Stakes and Pelican Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. The Mandy Ness trainee followed that with a record-setting win in the 2011 Hilton Garden Inn Sprint Stakes, speeding through the six furlongs to a Tampa Bay Downs track record of 1:08.69. And as fate would have it, Sneaking Uponyou broke a more than two-year stakes win drought with a tally in the 2014 Hilton Garden Inn/Hampton Inn and Suites Sprint Stakes on April 4. The Jagger Inc. colorbearer won by six and a quarter in 1:09.08. Also second in this season's Super Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, Sneaking Uponyou has seasonal earnings to date of $91,250. The 8-year-old gelding has made 48 career starts to date with four stakes wins and four stakes placings for a career bankroll of $470,209. LITTLE MIKE Big-Time Success A veteran Florida-bred turf star, Little Mike began laying the groundwork for his stellar career at Gulfstream Park. There at the Hallandale Beach track in 2011, he won a trio of Grade 3 stakes races: Canadian Turf (G3), Fort. Lauderdale Stakes (G3) and Appleton Stakes (G3). Impressive, but the best was yet to come in 2012. In stunning succession, Little Mike won the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs, Arlington-Million Stakes (G1) at Arlington Park and Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) at Santa Anita Park. It was his break-out season that put $2,668,742 in the bank for breeders/owners Carlo and Priscilla Vaccarezza. Little Mike, who was 5 at the time, was named the 2012 Florida-bred Horse of the Year, as well as champion older male and male turf horse. In 2013, the then-trained Dale Romans charge won the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park to bring his total of Grade 1 wins to four. Currently trained by Carlo Vaccarezza, Little Mike has made but one start to date in 2014. On May 17, he won the Flying Pidgeon Stakes by two and three-quarters lengths in

36 THE FLORIDA HORSE • NOVEMBER 2014

Precocious from the start, Bim Bam won two stakes as a juvenile to kick off his long lucrative career. In 2009 at Calder Race Course, Bim Bam scored victories in the Arthur I. Appleton Juvenile Turf Stakes and Foolish Pleasure Stakes. He would encore that with a pair of stakes wins in 2010, the Hallandale Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park and Lord Juban Stakes at Calder. While that was followed by a four-year dry spell when it came to visiting the winner's circle, Bim Bam was earning his keep. A steady performer, he posted eight seconds and nine thirds over that time span. Included in that number were 13 stakes-placings, most notably four in graded stakes. But you can't keep a good horse down for long. In 2014, Bim Bam raced his way to the winner's circle once more, twice in stakes to date. On July 2, the 7-year-old horse prevailed by a neck in the Independence Day Stakes on the turf at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort. That was followed on August 23 by a half-length score in the Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Handicap on the turf at Remington Park. To date this season, Bim Bam has earned $125,436 on three wins, one second and one third in six starts. Bred by Jim and Sheila DiMare's J D Farms, Bim Bam is by Deputy Wild Cat out of Laurel Light, by Colony Light. Both Deputy Wild Cat and Colony Light stood at the DiMares' Rising Hill Farm. Bim Bam raced for J D Farms through the 2010 season before being sold privately to current owners Chuck and Ella Lou Hagaman. Bim Bam has to date 48 career starts and lifetime earnings of $787,598.

Of the group of Florida-breds featured in this article, Good Lord definitely qualifies as an old warrior racehorse. The 7-year-old gelding began his career as a 2-year-old, has posted at least one win in every racing season since then, and has made an astounding 62 starts. And in those 62 starts, he has hit the board a remarkable 35 times. Included in that latter number are 13 wins, 10 seconds and 12 thirds with eight stakes wins and seven stakes-placings. In his still ongoing career, Good Lord has set three track records at three different tracks and won the Don Bernhardt Stakes three consecutive years in a row. While a consistent runner from the start, Good Lord hit his stride as a 5-year-old and won four stakes in 2012.

WICKED TUNE A Winning Song Bred and raced throughout his career by Patricia Generazio, Wicked Tune has more than paid for his feed and board. In his 36 career starts, the 7-year-old chestnut stallion has hit the board 22 times. He has posted 11 wins, four seconds and seven thirds for a career bankroll to date of $376,583. One kind of gets the feeling that Wicked Tune is not a horse that can be rushed. Although he started twice as a juvenile, he didn't break his maiden until his sophomore season in 2010. The following season,

Wicked Tune has seasonal earnings to date of $94,350 on two wins and two thirds in five starts.

The quartet included the Mountaineer Mile Stakes, Wild and Wonderful Stakes, Kentucky Downs Turf Dash and Don Bernhardt Stakes. He set track records in the Wild and Wonderful Stakes at Charles Town (1:22.68 for 7 furlongs) and Don Bernhardt Stakes at Ellis Park (1:14.46 for 6.5 furlongs). In 2013, Good Lord again won the Don Bernhardt Stakes and the Super Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. In the latter, he set a track record of 1:22.03 for seven furlongs. Rolling into 2014, Good Lord captured the Kelly's Landing Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 28. He won by two and three-quarter lengths in 1:22.45 for the seven furlongs. On July 19, he posted his third consecutive Don Bernhardt Stakes victory by a neck in 1:14.55 for the six-and-a-half furlongs. In his 62nd career start on Sept. 20, Good Lord was second in the Wild and Wonderful Stakes at Charles Town. Wicked Tune was stakes-placed twice but didn't tally his first stakes win until 2013 as a 6-year-old. That milestone victory came in the My Frenchman Stakes at Monmouth Park, the same race that he had posted a second in 2011. In the 2014 season to date, Wicked Tune has posted a stakes win and a stakes-placing for his best showing yet. On Feb. 1, he captured the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint by three-quarters of a length. His winning time for the five furlongs was a sizzling :56.98. Also at Gulfstream Park, he nabbed a third in the Silks Run Stakes for trainer Jane Cibelli. HOBO RIDGE Second only to Good Lord by number of career starts, Hobo Ridge has been a consistently dependable runner since breaking his maiden as a juvenile. With 50 career starts to date, Hobo Ridge has notched at least one win in each of the six seasons he has raced. The 7-year-old gelding has hit the board 28 times with 10 wins, 8 seconds and 10 thirds for career earnings of $328,074. For the most part, Hobo Ridge earned it the hard way in allowance/optional claiming races. But when he finally won a stakes, he did it in a big way in 2014. On Aug. 23 at Parx Racing, Hobo Ridge roared to a 24-length victory in the Turning For Home Stakes. When the field turned for home, it was all Hobo Ridge in 1:47.49 for the 8.5 furlongs. Finally, Hobo Ridge had earned his blacktype. Trained by Marcos Zulueta while being campaigned by M-Z Racing Partnership, Hobo Ridge has to date earned $76,740 this season. According to TRA Executive Vice President Chris Scherf, the first simulcast conference was held in 1993 to address merged pool simulcasting and continues to be held annually to keep the racing industry abreast of technological advances and other issues regarding simulcasting. Dan Silver, Director of Television and Interactive Platforms for the New York Racing Association (NYRA), was the first presenter at this year’s conference. The session entitled Components of High Definition Delivery to Market was kicked off by Silver describing how horseracing has lagged behind other sports in transitioning to high definition. computers are making the transactions. Computer betting also referred to as program betting started in the United States around 1999 – 2000. “Now 20 percent of pari-mutuel pools come from batched computer programs,” stated Linnell. “The batch interfaces bet hundreds of wagers per batch instantly. The slow posting of final odds makes it a prime target for manipulation.” Linnell provided examples of how sometimes two-thirds of the pari-mutuel pool for the race comes in the last two minutes and the odds are only updated one time. Quicker display of odds cycles is important citing this year’s Kentucky Derby with Candy Boy’s odds dropping from 16-1 to 9-1 in the last flash. Jane Murray concluded the first session with a review of how non-pari-mutuel revenue is generating purses. She provided an overview of how alternative gaming was introduced in West Virginia in 1993 and that currently 16 states have alternative gaming. She stated that 35 percent of purses in North America come from nonpari-mutuel sources. She ended by saying non-parimutuel revenue will continue

to make up an increasing percentage of purses and purses may drop due to an oversaturation of gaming, lower handle and a lower horsemen share of gaming revenues. Murray kicked off the afternoon session announcing that Keeneland won the 2014 Simulcast Award for the seventh-time. The judges cited Keeneland’s clear and crisp graphics and use of multiple paddock cameras as reasons for winning the prestigious contest. Gulfstream was an entrant in the competition. Lou Rafetto followed with a presentation on targeting specific audiences in the United States. Raffetto, President of YUP Racing, explained how his company is the first Chinese language wagering website in North America. YUP Racing launched on Dec. 26, 2013. Rafetto was quick to point out that Chinese Americans can speak three different languages which leads to the complexity of creating a website for the demographic. Chris Sherf then convened an informal panel to discuss ontrack mobile wagering with industry professionals David Payton of AmTote, Micah Lloyd of Sportech, Chris Emslie of United Tote, Frank Hopf of Sam Houston Race Park and Carrie Stallbories of Remington Park. David Payton provided data from Pew Research showing that 90 percent of American adults have cell phones, 58 percent have smart phones, 32 percent own an e-reader and 42 percent operate a tablet computer. Micah Lloyd stated that 64 million wagers were placed online last year and the number is expected to grow to 164 million by 2018. Racetracks are trying to embrace technology providing another platform to wager with mobile devices ontrack limited to Wi-Fi inside the facility. The

illo became the first Florida-bred Breeders’ Cup winner on his way to earning an Eclipse Award. Gate Dancer captured the Preakness Stakes (G1) and became the seventh Florida-bred to attain millionaire status. Bred by Ollie A. Cohen and raced by his Crown Stable, Eillo carried more than just his owner’s silks. Eillo is Ollie spelled backwards. The 4-year-old colt by Mr. Prospector out of Barbs Dancer, by Northern Dancer, began his championship season with January victories in the Tallahassee Handicap and Kendall Stakes at Hialeah. He followed that with a win in the Hialeah Sprint Championship on March 5, covering the seven furlongs in 1:21 4/5. The Budd Lepman trainee prepped for the inaugural running of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) with a tally in the Chief Pennekeck Handicap. He stopped the clock in 1:09 4/5 for the six furlongs. In the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Nov. 10 at Hollywood Park, Eillo went to the lead out of the gates. With Craig Perret in the saddle, he prevailed by a nose over Commemorate in 1:10 1/5 for the six furlongs. Retired with lifetime earnings of $657,670, Eillo suffered a severe bout of colic shortly after the Breeders’ Cup. After two surgeries, he died of colitis. He was posthumously honored as the 1984 Eclipse champion sprinter. Eillo was also named the Florida-bred champion sprinter. Gate Dancer was his own worst enemy early in his career. The talented Sovereign Dancer colt had the bad habit of lugging in or out when he heard the crowd roar. That no doubt cost him some wins as he posted a second in the El Camino Real Derby (G3), a third in the Santa Catalina Stakes (G2), a second in the San Felipe Handicap (G2) and a third in the Arkansas Derby (G2). In the Kentucky Derby (G1), the hooded Gate Dancer finished fourth only to be disqualified for interference and was placed fifth.

58 THE FLORIDA HORSE • NOVEMBER 2014

Two weeks later, Angel Cordero Jr. rode Gate Dancer for the first time in the Preakness Stakes (G1). As Gate Dancer made his move on the turn for home and straightened up in the stretch, he began to lug-in. But Cordero kept him on course, riding him to a record-setting win. Gate Dancer beat Play On by a length and a half, setting a record time of 1:53 3/5 for the mile and three-sixteenths. Bred by Bill Davis and raced by Ken Opstein, Gate Dancer went on to add wins in the Ak-Sar-Ben Omaha Gold Cup Stakes and Super Derby (G1). But his antics returned in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). In deep stretch, he lugged in and made contact with Slew o’Gold. He was disqualified from second to third, with Wild Again winning and Slew o’Gold moving up to second. Despite his contrary nature, Gate Dancer became the seventh Florida-bred millionaire. On the season, the Jack Van Berg trainee earned $1,136,525. Gate Dancer was named that season’s Florida-bred champion 3-year-old colt and Floridabred Horse of the Year. Other Florida-bred champions that season included: World Appeal (champion handicap horse); Sultry Sun (champion handicap mare); Fashionably Late (champion 3year-old filly); Mighty Appealing (champion 2-year-old colt); Diplomette (champion 2-year-old filly); and Roving Minstel (champion turf horse). Lasater Farm was the state’s leading breeder with purse earnings of $2,728,066. Other Florida breeders making the national list were Tartan Farms ($2,188,277), Harbor View Farms ($2,090,918), Fred W. Hooper ($2,071,458), Harry T. Mangurian Jr. ($1,587,696), Farnsworth Farms ($1,495,253), William R. Davis ($1,475,042), Meadowbrook Farm ($1,458,470) and Ocala Stud Farms ($1,307,666). Lasater Farm was purchased by John Fernung, A. J. Foyt, J.T. Lundy and Harry Ranier. It was renamed Southland Farm. Nodouble was the leading Florida sire, ranked 12th nationally, with progeny earnings of $2,105,573. Needles, the first Florida-bred champion (1955) and first Florida-bred winner of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes (1956), died on Oct. 15, 1984.■ STEVE SHORT PHOTO

Dr. Catherine W. Kohn, Professor Emeritus, Ohio State University says many of our current ideas about ways to minimize stress were developed by an international panel of veterinarians in 1999. “Studies from Australia and several other countries showed that confining horses to a trailer for long periods has detrimental affects on the respiratory system,” she says. “Part of the reason is because horses have a long neck/trachea with significant distance between the nasal passages and the lungs. The horse in nature spends a lot of time with its head down, grazing. When it inhales contaminants into the lower airway, it can get rid of those most of the time with the help of the tiny cilia in the lining of the airways.” These continually move mucus and foreign particles away from the lungs—to be swallowed or coughed out. The headdown posture helps this process. The way we manage horses sometimes contributes to airway contamination. “Horses are often kept in stalls, bedded with straw or shavings, and fed hay that may be dusty. Changing the bedding and sweeping barn aisles can contribute to aerosolizing a large number of tiny particles in the horse’s immediate breathing zone. Air quality is even worse in a trailer where the horse is more confined, and a trailer is usually not as well ventilated as most barns. Most people put bedding in the trailer, and a hay net in front of the horse’s nose. His breathing zone is heavily About 10% of contaminated with tiny particles from the horses hauled hay and bedding,” she says. for long disOther contaminants and particles in the tances develop tant causes of pleuropneumonia (lung inair during transport may include fumes from vehicles, pollen from nearby fields, shipping fever. fection with fluid and infection in the etc. “There are many things that a horse —Dr. Catherine W. trained horses that were characterized as good loaders. She found that the heart rates in the good loaders were actually higher than in the horses that had undergone the training,” says Kohn. One thing people often discuss regarding transport stress is position of the horses in the trailer. “The horse bears about 60% of its weight on the front legs. When a horse is going down the road in a trailer, propping on its front end to stand up, this requires effort. An earlier study looked at the muscular effort required during transport in ponies, and found that it was approximately equivalent to walking. Horses must make constant balance adjustments because the trailer is moving, accelerating and decelerating, going around corners, etc. Most people would not put their horse on a walker for 24 hours, or even 12 hours, so a rest period becomes understandable in that context,” she says. Some trailers are designed so horses are on a slant rather than facing forward. “Some people think it is easier for horses to balance that way. However, there are horses that like to stand with their rear end toward the front of the trailer, if allowed to choose their position. A study in 2001 looked at forward and rear-facing orientations and the affects this had on how much the horse tried to move around while shipping. Responses were different for individual horses; each one had its own preference for orientation in the trailer,” Kohn says. “To make travel less stressful, choose good roads. A freeway that’s smooth and straight, with vehicles going at the same speed most of the time without the horses being jostled or having to continually brace, will help. Concerning water quality, reducing erosion and runoff helps by Jamie Cohen, prevent sediments, fertilizers and pesticides from reaching Farm Outreach ground and surface waters. According to Cornell University, Coordinator “improved soil health can also help save money not only with the reduction of erosion, but also because,” as soil physical, chemical and biological health improves over time; the use of agrichemicals (pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers) can be significantly reduced or, in some cases, phased out entirely.” Healthy soils can aide with water purification. Rain falling on healthy pastures infiltrates slowly into the soil, allowing time to reduce runoff while recharging groundwater sources. Greater infiltration helps to reduce flooding (by increased water storage in soil), slowing its release. When more water slowly infiltrates soils, streams are fed more by the ground waters, resulting in cleaner surface waters. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “dissolved nutrients, such as nitrogen or phosphorus, chemically bond with some types of soil particles. They are then taken up by plants, thus removing them from the soil before they can enter an aquifer. For plants, these elements are food, for an aquifer, excess amounts pollute. As fall settles in and the days grow shorter, warm-season grasses (Bahia and Bermuda, for example) are ending their growing seasons, so hopefully the pastures were well managed during the summer to help grasses come back healthy and strong next spring. Maintaining vital and lush pastures starts with healthy soils; besides improving sustainability and helping grass/plants to be their best, healthy soils can also help flooding and erosion, cleanse and purify waters, assist with climate change through carbon sequestration (storage) in the soil and hugely benefit both small and large wildlife. For a farm, careful and sustainable soil management practices can also potentially help decrease money spent on seeding, fertilizers and pesticides, improving the bottom line! Today, everyone talks about “sustainability, for agriculture and other practices; it can also be a “hot” political term, but what does it really mean? For horse farms, it can mean no additions of fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides and pesticides, all of which can be detrimental to soils and the organisms utilizing it as a resource. It also involves correct manure management, which can benefit soils by adding composted manure, i.e. organic matter. Often, farms tend to

RIGHTS OF DEROSA

Challenging Counterparts by Ed DeRosa

T

he Breeders’ Cup will already be in the rearview mirror by the time this publishes, and maybe foreign-based horses will have swept the turf races at the “World Championships” to reduce the gravitas of what I’m about to say, but I’ll go ahead and say it anyway: We are in a golden age of American turf racing. It is fashionable to knock American turf horses especially in relation to their counterparts overseas, but there is no question that our top horses on turf are among the best in the world. I choose those words—among the best—carefully because I hold no delusions that Wise Dan was better than Frankel or Little Mike, but when the former captured the Mile (G1) and the latter the Turf (G1) in 2012, they certainly held their own against some of the world’s top turf horses. Wise Dan defeated Excelebation and Moonlight Cloud—two horses most known for running second to Frankel and Black Caviar, respectively. Little Mike finished ahead of the domestic three-time Grade 1 winner Point of Entry with the previous year’s Turf winner St. Nicholas Abbey third, Japan’s Trailblazer fourth, and the Irish-bred Shareta fifth.

We are in a golden age of American turf racing. It is fashionable to knock American turf horses especially in relation to their counterparts overseas, but there is no question that our top horses on turf are among the best in the world. Wise Dan’s 2012 Mile win propelled him to his first of two Horse of the Year titles, and—before being sidelined in October with an injury to his right front ankle—might have been heading toward a third. I actually voted for Little Mike in 2012, though, as his resume of the 1 1/8-mile Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (G1), 1 ¼-mile Arlington Million (G1), and 1½-mile Turf was more impressive to me than Wise Dan’s miler campaign. Either way, though, it says something for the quality of these animals on turf that their campaigns even merited Horse of the Year discussion considering the last Horse of the Year to race on grass was Curlin in 2008 (second to Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks in the Man o’ War Stakes (G1)), and the last Horse of the Year to win on

grass was 1993 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Kotashaan. Sadly, some continue to bang the drum that American turf racing is somehow inferior from an international perspective. Sure, there’s more depth overseas where they run predominantly on turf, but no longer is turf racing an afterthought in the U.S. where our second-leading sire (through Oct. 5) is champion turf male Kitten’s Joy and others in the top ten include stallions known for turf progeny such as City Zip, Lemon Drop Kid, and Hard Spun. Little Mike was bred in Florida by his current trainer, Carlo Vaccarezza, and runs for Priscilla Vaccarezza. His Breeders’ Cup Turf win marked the 25th ever by a Floridabred horse at the Breeders’ Cup (Mucho Macho Man became #26 in last year’s Classic), and the fourth in a turf event with Prized in 1989 the other Turf win to go along with Cozzene and Miesque’s Approval Mile wins in 1985 and 2006, respectively. Little Mike’s efforts made him Florida’s 2013 Horse of the Year. One race in Florida that has attracted some of the best turf stars in this golden age is the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1), which Point of Entry won in 2013 over Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Animal Kingdom between a runner-up finish to Wise Dan in the Mile and a Dubai World Cup (G1-UAE) victory. Point of Entry was the eighth consecutive multiple Grade 1 winner to capture the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap. As the calendar turns to 2015 in the coming weeks, many thoughts will naturally turn toward the Kentucky Derby trail, and while looking for racing’s next big star is part of the fun of winter racing, don’t miss out on watching the best of our turf horses, either, as they’ve proven their star power the past few years, and many have done so right here in the Sunshine State.■ Ed DeRosa is the director of marketing for Brisnet.com, the official data source of the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands and Twinspires.com. Ed joined Brisnet in July of 2011 following nine years with Thoroughbred Times. He grew up in Cleveland and learned to love horse racing while going to Thistledown with his grandfather. Ed is a diehard Indians fan, leaving him to wonder which—if either—will come first: A Triple Crown Winner or an Indians World Series championship. Ed’s favorite horses are Real Quiet, Ghostzapper and Rachel Alexandra.
