Million Dollar Day for Florida-breds By BROCK SHERIDAN
T
he Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association continues to boost Florida-bred bonus money in stakes races at Gulfstream Park this summer as they have added a $25,000 bonus to both the Monroe Stakes and the Hollywood Beach Stakes, both to be run on Sept. 28—the day of the $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes In Reality for colts and geldings and the $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes My Dear Girl for fillies. Older Florida Sire Stakes horses will also be featured on the Sept. 28 card in the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes $150,000 Wildcat Heir for 3-year-olds and older going a mile on the main track. If you’re not keeping track, that makes Sept. 28 a $1 million day for Florida-breds and Florida Sire Stakes horses and their owners and breeders. The $75,000 Monroe Stakes is for fillies and mares, 3-years-old and older who will go a mile-and-one-sixteenth on the turf. The $75,000 Hollywood Beach is for 2-yearolds going five furlongs on the turf. Each bonus will be paid to any registered Florida-breds who finish first, second or third in either the Monroe or the Hollywood Beach to be paid a basis of 70% ($17,500) to the winner, 20% ($5,000) to second and 10% (2,500) for third. It pays to own a Florida-bred and it really pays to have a Florida Sire Stakes-eligible Florida-bred. Last year Florida-breds had a very good season at Saratoga Race Course as five Sunshine State natives won stakes during the 2018 meeting. Imperial Hint, won the Vanderbilt Stakes

(G1), Catherinethegreat took the Grade 3 Schuylerville, Broadway Run won the $100,000 Coronation Cup, the Tale of the Cat Stakes went to Always Sunshine and Extravagant Kid won the $100,000 Lucky Coin Stakes. Through Aug. 19 of this year, Florida-breds have continued their success at the Spa with three stakes winners so far. Imperial Hint repeated to win the Vanderbilt, while breaking a 47-year-old track record, Mominou won the $200,000 Caress Stakes and Eyeinthesky won the $100,000 Galway Stakes. A salute goes out to Patricia Generazio of Tequesta, Fla., for her popular Florida homebred Pure Sensation who accomplished a unique feat July 7 at Parx Racing near Philadelphia. The grey turf sprinter won the Grade 3 Parx Dash for the third time, which in itself is quite an accomplishment. On the “more to the story” angle however, the Parx Dash is not the only Grade 3 race Pure Sensation has won three times. He also has a triple in the Grade 3 Turf Monster Stakes, also at Parx. Moving on to yet “Even more to the story,” Pure Sensation is one of only six Florida-breds to have competed in the Breeders’ Cup in three separate years, all in the Turf Sprint. He was eighth in the 2015 version, third in the 2016 Turf Sprint and fifth in 2017. He joins Aikenite, Bet On Sunshine, Flat Out, Forbidden Apple and Jeranimo as Floridabreds with three Breeders’ Cup appearances. The great Precisionist, however, holds the record among Florida-breds with four trips to the Breeders’ Cup. ■

Win Win Win Takes to Turf With Manila Score After spending much of his year running against some of the best 3-year-olds in North America in races leading up to and including the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) and the Preakness Stakes (G1), Florida-bred Win Win Win was shifted to stakes competition on grass where he produced a victorious response. Racing in the famous red, white and black colors of Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation, the Michael Trombetta-trained, homebred colt won the $100,000 Manila Stakes over seven other sophomores going a oneturn mile on the turf course during Belmont Park’s July 4 holiday card.
8 THE FLORIDA HORSE • SEPTEMBER 2019
Win Win Win and his regular jockey Julian Pimentel were content to race in last-place early in the Manila as 32-1 longshot Ian Glass took the field through honest fractions of :22.77 for the first quartermile, the half-mile in :45.29 and six furlongs on 1:08.45 with Pole Setter and Fog of War also close. Ian Glass, Pole Setter and Fog of War turned for home three abreast while Win Win Win and Penn Mile (G2) runner-up Casa Creed began to pick up the pace on the far outside. Fog of War, Win Win Win and Casa Creed raced to the wire in a dramatic photo finish with Win Win Win on the outside winning by a half-length. Only a head margin separated Fog of War in second on the rail with Casa Creed between them in the show spot. Win Win Win stopped the clock in 1:31.56 over the firm turf which was just .33 seconds off the track record set by Oscar Performance in last year’s Grade 3 Poker Stakes. Win Win Win went off at 4-1 and paid $10.20 to win. “[Win Win Win] has really matured. He used to be playful, but now he’s gotten more focused on running,” Pimentel said. “Today, he went easy. I had a ton of horse heading for home. I was just waiting to make my move. I had so many horses in front of me, but I was just biding my time. When we got in the clear, he took off.” Win Win Win made his 3-year-old debut in Tampa Bay Downs’

$75,000 Pasco Stakes which he won in a track record time of 1:20.89 for seven furlongs. He then finished third in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) and second in the Blue Grass (G2) before finishing tenth in the Derby and seventh in the Preakness. Win Win Win now sports a record of four wins from nine starts with $442,000 to his credit after earning $55,000 in the Manila. He is by Hat Trick (Jpn) out of Miss Smarty Pants, by Smarty Jones. ■
After finishing third in the 2018 Parx Dash, Florida-bred millionaire Pure Sensation won the Grade 3 turf race for the third time July 6 at Parx Racing after winning the five furlong race in 2016 and 2017. The $200,000 Parx Dash, for 3-year-olds and older, was also his third consecutive trip to the winners’ circle in three starts this year for the Patricia A. Generazio homebred who now has 13 career wins from 33 starts. Pure Sensation exploded out of post seven with Paco Lopez aboard and put a one length lead on the field of 10 before they hit the first furlong marker. Vision Perfect, who won the Parx Dash last year, and 16-1 shot Smokin Nitro, tried to muster a challenge to his outside and were within a half-length when they marked the first quarter-mile in a prompt :22.18. Those two pushed up to even terms with Pure Sensation around the turn but only Smokin Nitro could keep up from the three path when they turned for home as Vision Perfect dropped back. Pure Sensation raced to the finish with an easy four-and-a-quarter length margin in a final time of 1:00.42 on the soft course. Rocket Heat made a late run from fourth to hit the finish line in second, another four-and-a-half lengths clear of Smokin Nitro in third. They were followed in order by Fig Jelly, Completed Pass, Fielder, Snowday, Nice Tune, Vision Perfect and Long May You Run.
Ray’swarrior Goes Gate to Wire in Rumson Stakes Victory Michael Dubb’s Ray’swarrior made an easy time of the $75,000 Rumson Stakes at Monmouth Park July 4 as he won the five furlong event by four lengths while leading from start to finish. Ridden by Paco Lopez from post two, Ray’swarrior broke evenly but was a length in front in just a few strides with 5-2 second choice Share the Ride giving chase in second. Turning for home, Lopez looked back for any late runners and saw no one as Ray’swarrior galloped home with little urging to win in a time of :56.62 on the fast track. The quick time was just .46 seconds off the 20-year-old-track record of Florida-bred L. B. on Tour set in the 1999 My Frenchman Stakes. Wonderful Light was second by a head over Share the Ride in third with Wildwood Dancer and Pudding completing the order of finish. “I was gravitating toward the turf with him initially because you see so many chances at five-eighths and five-and-a-half furlongs for horses like this,” Servis said. “With his speed it seemed to make sense. But it’s pretty obvious he’s a much better dirt horse.” By Majestic Warrior out of Mary Alex, by Honour and Glory, Ray’swarrior won for the seventh time in 22 starts and paid $3 to win as the 1-2 odds-on choice. He earned $45,000 and increased his career bankroll to $363,066. He was bred in the Florida by Alex and JoAnn Lieblong of Conway, Ark. ■

Trained by Christophe Clement, the 8year-old, gray or roan Pure Sensation earned $120,000 in winning the Parx Dash and increased his career bankroll to $1,773,550. Pure Sensation is a gelded son of Zensational out of the Disco Rico mare Pure Disco and he is now six for seven on the Parx turf. He also won the Grade 3 Turf Monster Stakes three times on the Parx grass in 2015-16 and 2018. Pure Sensation went off as the 6-5 favorite in the Parx Dash and paid $4.60 to win. Pure Disco has also produced stakes-winner Salute the Colonel, a 5-year-old son of Colonel John; and the 3-year-old winning filly Pure One, by Macho Uno. She has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Street Sense; a yearling Bodemeister colt named Pure Bode and was bred to Will Take Charge in 2019. ■

Since winning the Juvenile Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park West last November, N. T. S. Stable Inc.’s Stirling Drive has had little success in his subsequent eight starts. His best race came when he was third behind winner Vow Me Now and second-place finisher Art G Is Back in the $75,000 English Channel Stakes at Gulfstream Park on May 4. But the Milton Wolfson-trained Stirling Drive enjoyed the sweet taste of revenge at 10-1 odds July 6 at Gulfstream Park in defeating those two plus four other 3-year-olds in the $100,000 Not Surprising Stakes going a mile on the turf. After an even start by all in the Not Surprising, Sovereign Warrior from post two and Stirling Drive from post seven went to the front and led favored Vow Me Now by two lengths as they went into and around the clubhouse turn. Sovereign Warrior continued to lead down the backstretch after a quarter-mile split in :23.89 with Stirling Drive and jockey Samy Camacho giving chase in second. They had a clear seven-length lead on Vow Me Now in third with Scraps fourth. After a half-mile in :48.23 Sovereign Warrior continued to lead Stirling Drive as the others began to creep closer when they went into and around the far turn. Into the stretch, Stirling Drive went to the front on the outside of Sovereign Warrior as Scraps, Forever Mo and Art G Is Back also got into the fray. However, neither Forever Mo nor Art G Is Back could find a clear path and Stirling Drive fought them all off to win in a time of 1:36.27 on the firm turf. Art G Is Back finally found room on the rail but missed Stirling Drive by a neck to get second with Forever Mo losing the place photo by a nose to finish third. He was just a neck in front of Scraps in fourth with Sovereign Warrior, Starship Aramis and Vow Me Now completing the order. “I tried to get the lead, but [Stirling Drive] took a good position outside [pacesetter Sovereign Warrior],” Camacho said. “At the halfmile pole, I didn’t see anyone to give us pressure [and] at the three-eighths pole I

The last furlong, it got a little tight, but we won the race.” Stirling Drive is by Verrazano out of the Candy Stripes mare La Presidenta (Arg), who was a graded-stakes-winner in Argentina. Stirling Drive was bred in Florida by Farm III Enterprises LLC and is a graduate of the 2018 Ocala Breeders’ Sales April Sale where N.T.S. Stable Inc. purchased him for $75,000 out of the consignment of Off the Hook LLC as an agent. Stirling Drive paid $23.40 to win, $7.60 to place and $4.20 to show while earning $60,760 in the Not Surprising. His record now stands at three wins from 14 starts with $182,740 in earnings. ■

A bay filly, Napa Rules outlasted 9-5 favorite Sweet Belen in the $25,0000 maiden claiming and won by a length over the latter with Edgar Prado aboard. Dog Daz Racing’s Sweet Belen is by Journeyman Stud resident and leading Florida freshman sire Khozan. Napa Rules broke on top from post two and was joined by Cookin Roses on the outside in second with Sweet Belen between them in third. Napa Rules went the first quarter in :23.08 as she and Sweet Belen had separated themselves from Cookin Roses after clocking a half-mile in :46.83. With a furlong to run, Napa Rules began to quicken away from Sweet Belen and finished

Painting Corners Survives Claim of Foul to Win Daisycutter Stakes Painting Corners proved once again that she is a survivor. In winning the July 20 Daisycutter Stakes at Del Mar, the Florida-bred mare had to withstand a claim of foul by a competing jockey but that was much easier than her previous test of tenacity. According to breeder Jacquelyn A. Reinhart, of Fort McCoy, Fla., Painting Corners is also a survivor of the Lilac wildfire that burned much of San Luis Rey Downs in Bonsall, Ca., in January of 2018 and took the lives of 40 thoroughbreds. Trained by Peter Miller for Nick Cosato’s
Slam Dunk Racing LLC of Sierra Madre, Ca., and Altamira Racing Stable, Painting Corners won the $99,164 Daisycutter Stakes for her second black type win of 2019. Two starts back, the 5-year-old Painting Corners won the $78,000 Mizdirection Stakes while leading from start to finish at Santa Anita on April 13. Painting Corners and jockey Flavien Prat were among the nine fillies and mares who went five furlongs on the turf in the Daisycutter, which she won by three-quarters of a length. The John Sadler-trained Kentan Road, who was coming into the Daisycutter off of two optional claiming wins at Santa Anita, shot to the front from her outside post nine as Painting Corners chased in second from post three. Kentan Road took the field through a quarter-mile in a quick :22.48 while keeping daylight between herself and Painting Corners, who was about another length in front of Just Grazed Me and favorite S Y Sky in third and fourth respectively. After a half-mile in :44.84, Painting Corners took over turning for home and was a length in front of S Y Sky for the run down the stretch. Painting Corners drifted out slightly inside the final eighth-mile but S Y Sky was never able to put in a serious threat as they finished in :56.21 on the firm course. S Y Sky was a half-length ahead of third-place finisher Just Grazed Me followed in order by A Little Bit Me, Kentan Road, Holly Hundy, Gliding By, Gypsy Blue and Lady Suebee. Drayden Van Dyke, who rode S Y Sky, lodged a claim of foul against Painting Corners, but the claim was disallowed by the Del Mar stewards and the order of finish stood. It was the second stakes win of the year for Painting Corners including the Mizdirection victory and it was her seventh win in 20

The winning strategy for Florida-bred filly Mominou seems pretty straight forward: Break well and go to the front. In two of her three previous wins, in a Keeneland allowance race two starts back on April 20 and in a Belmont Park optional claiming race in May of last year, Mominou was on the lead at every point of call. That was exactly the game plan executed to perfection by jockey Kendrick Carmouche on Mominou when she won the $200,000 Caress Stakes at five-and-a-half furlongs on grass at Saratoga Race Course July 21. Eight fillies and mares comprised the field for the Caress.

The 5-year-old Caribou Club had consecutive wins against gradedstakes horses in Southern California over the winter having won the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar on Nov. 24 and the Grade 3 Joe Hernandez Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 1. Trainer Tom Proctor then sent Caribou Club to Meydan Race Course in Dubai, U.A.E. in March where he finished back in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint won by Blue Point at six furlongs before returning to North America for the June 29 Highlander Stakes (G1) at Woodbine where he was fifth behind winner Wet Your Whistle. But the Glen Hill Farm homebred had little trouble in the West Virginia House of Delegates Speaker’s Cup as he came from off the pace to win as the second choice in the wagering with 5-2 odds. Glasgow Stakes runner-up Abiding Star set the pace in the House of Delegates while getting a clear lead through fractions of :22.83 for the first quarter-mile and :46.50 for the half. Meanwhile, Caribou Club and jockey Feargal Lynch remained patient while running mid-pack, about three lengths off the lead. Into the stretch, Caribou Club took over from Swagger Jagger and Abiding Star while racing on the outside and went on to win by a length and one-quarter in a track record time of 1:37.09 on the firm course. More Than Good also came from off the pace and finished second, a neck ahead of Abiding Star in third. Big Changes, Swagger Jagger, Second Mate, Zambian, King Valero, Bandar, Judah and Runaway Posse completed the order of finish. It was the eighth win from 20 career starts for Caribou Club who paid $7 to win, $4.40 to place and $3.60 to show. He earned $44,100 for the win to increase his career bankroll to $553,427. By BROCK SHERIDAN HALLANDALE BEACH, FL— hance It lived up to his pre-race billing and 1-5 odds as he dominated the $100,000 Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association Florida Sire Stakes Dr. Fager Aug. 3 at Gulfstream Park, winning by three-and-a-quarter lengths. The Dr. Fager is for 2-year-old Floridabred colts and geldings sired by FTBOA registered stallions going six furlongs. The Dr. Fager and the $100,000 FTBOA FSS Desert Vixen, for 2year-old Florida-bred fillies also sired by FTBOA registered stallions, are the first two divisions of the $1.4 million FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes for juveniles to be run at Gulfstream Park this summer. But Liam’s Lucky Charm was never able to mount a serious threat to Chance It, who clocked the first half-mile in :45.82 while continuing to draw away in the run for home. Chance It and jockey Edgard Zayas raced under the finish in 1:11.22 on the track rated as good with Liam’s Lucky Charm finishing an easy second, 10 1/4 lengths ahead of Absolute Grit in third.

Northbrook, Man With a Plan, One Turn Johnny, Turn On the Magic finished in that order. “He was much the best,” Zayas said. “It was awesome. It was incredible. The post position wasn’t the best but he made the best out of it and showed that he had a lot of class. I’m looking forward to the good races he has ahead of him.” Zayas also said that Chance It raced well after being on the lead early in the race for the first time. “He was wondering, when he took the lead, when he didn’t see any horses around him. But he has a very long stride and I didn’t want to get boxed in. I know I’m the target in the race. But he did everything really good. He took the lead and just kept on going. “I think after the sire stakes, I’m sure he can run Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. against anyone. He has a lot of class.” It was the second win in two starts for Chance It, who finished second to Smash Factor in his first career start against Florida-bred special weight maidens at Gulfstream on June 1 at five furlongs. But it was his second race that turned heads as he won a maiden special weight, again against fellow Florida-breds, by nine-and-a-quarter lengths at Gulfstream on June 29. That day he covered the five furlongs on a good main track in 1:03.95 to earn a 92 Beyer Speed Figure, which remains among the best Beyer numbers by any 2-year-olds in North America. Lightner heads the Shooting Star Thoroughbreds LLC syndicate that owns Chance It. She said Shooting Star is made up of “about 20 people and half of them are here today. Some live in Kentucky and flew in for this race and they’re happy they did.” Although they have received several attractive offers for Chance It, Lightner said their plan was to continue with the Florida Sire Stakes with the bay colt.

“It’s hard to get a really good horse,” Lightner continued. “And we wanted to to do right by all these [partners]. So that’s the direction we decided to go. To keep him and see what we can do in the Sire Stakes. I do like the Sire Stakes. I wish I could have a horse for it every year.” Although Lightner admits to being nervous before the Dr. Fager because of the inside post, she said she had plenty of confidence in her team. “Edgard [Zayas] knows the horse really well and he does a great job. And [trainer] Saffie [Joseph Jr.], nobody could do a better job than Saffie getting him ready.” Joseph said he was also concerned with the inside post before the race but elated with Chance It’s performance. “The main thing is when you draw the ‘one [post]’, you want to get away from [the starting gate] cleanly. I think that was a key moment in the race when [Zayas] had to use him a little bit to get position. After that, he did it. He didn’t win by nine lengths today like he did last time, but if you take [Liam’s Lucky Charm] out of it, it was a long way back to third. “This horse is going to have a bright future.” Chance It is by Currency Swap out of Vagabond Diva, by Pleasantly Perfect and was bred in Florida by Bett Usher of Ocala. Usher got Vagabond Diva from Fred Pace, who had bred her to Jersey Town to produce Florida-bred Trenton Traveler. Lightner trained Trenton Traveler and when he broke his maiden at Churchill Downs in his first career race, Lightner went in search of Usher and Chance It. “We found [Usher], who is my friend now, and my Dad and brother went to look at [Chance It] and loved him. So we bought him and broke him right there at Oak Ridge [Training Center in Ocala] and sent him down to Saffie. So we’re happy the way the whole thing turned out. These are the things you dream about. Chance It paid $2.40 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show and earned $60,000 for Shooting Star Thoroughbreds for winning the Dr. Fager. He now has a career bankroll of $104,150 and Lightner said the $200,000 FTBOA FSS Affirmed at seven furlongs on Aug. 31 at Gulfstream is the target. ■

ast year Florida-bred Imperial Hint won the Grade 1 A.G. Vanderbilt Handicap by nearly four lengths in what many called one of the more impressive races of the 2018 Saratoga meeting. But the Little Rocket further elevated his game in a compelling way July 27 at the Spa as he won his second Vanderbilt while breaking a 47-year-old track record for six furlongs in a performance described by some as legendary and jaw dropping. XBTV’s award winning analyst and Eclipse Award winning ex-jockey Richard Migliore tweeted that it was a top 10 all-time sprint performance. David Aragona of Daily Racing Form and the morning line maker for the New York Racing Association tweeted: “Imperial Hint just put forth one of the greatest sprinting performances I’ve ever seen.” Let go as the third choice in the $350,000 Vanderbilt at odds of 5.8-1 after two thirds this year in the $75,000 Pelican Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 16 and another to fellow Florida-bred X Y Jet in the $2.5 million Dubai Golden Shaheen Stakes (Group 1) at Meydan

From Carry Back (1962) to World of Trouble (2019), the number of Florida-bred millionaires has grown to 172 and counting. By JOANN GUIDRY
T
here has to be a first to everything. And when it comes to Florida-bred millionaires, the first was Carry Back, an unlikely hero if there ever was one. The little brown colt by Saggy out of Joppy, by Star Blen, was described by sports writers of the era as “the colt from the wrong side of the tracks” and who was the result of “a chance mating.” The backstory to that less than flattering description goes like this: In the early 1950s, Jack and Katherine Price owned Dorchester Farm in Kirtland, Ohio. When one of their boarders failed to pay his $150 bill, they acquired the mare Joppy as payment. Joppy was later sent to the stallion Saggy, a stakes winner who had actually beaten the great Citation once and stood at Country Life Farm outside of Baltimore, Md. After Joppy was bred, she was sent with other Price mares to be boarded at Ocala Stud. The Prices would soon relocate Dorchester Farm to Ocala. Named after a tax loophole, Carry Back was a small horse of only 15.1 hands and weighing less than 1,000 pounds. Trained by Jack Price, Carry Back became a stakes winner at two with victories in the 1960 Cowdin Stakes, Garden State Stakes and Remsen Stakes. Carry Back earned $286,299 on the season, making an incredible 21 starts as a two year old. As a 3-year-old in 1961, Carry Back would be even better. He won the Everglades Stakes, Flamingo Stakes and Florida Derby. After a second in the Wood Memorial, he became the second Florida-bred Kentucky Derby winner. Two weeks later, he became the first Floridabred to win the Preakness Stakes. Injured during the running of the Belmont Stakes

(G1), Carry Back was given a two-month layoff. But he was back in stakes-winning form before the end of the season, winning the Jerome Handicap. On 16 starts, he posted nine wins, one second and three thirds – winning seven stakes and being stakes-placed four times – to earn $565,349. Not surprisingly, he was named the 1961 North American champion 3-year-old colt and joined Needles and My Dear Girl as Florida-bred national champions. Apparently determined to retire Carry Back as a millionaire, Price brought him back as a 4-year-old in 1962. On May 30, Carry Back defeated two-time Horse of the Year Kelso in the Metropolitan Handicap and became the first Florida-bred millionaire. He would also win the Whitney Stakes and Monmouth Handicap that season, setting a track record of 2:00.40 for a mile-and-a-quarter in the latter. Carry Back made 19 starts that season and earned $319,177 on the year. After a brief return to the races and winning the Trenton Handicap in 1963, Carry Back was retired for good with career earnings of $1,241,165 on 21 wins, 11 seconds and 11 thirds in an amazing 62 career starts. He won 14 stakes and was stakes-placed 20 times. During his career at stud, Carry Back sired 283 foals of racing age, 188 of which were winners. His runners earned a total of $5,212,406. Among his stakes winners were Sharp Gary, Taken Aback, Back in Paris, Rockem Back, Spire and Toter Back. Carry Back was elected into the National Museum Racing Hall of Fame in 1975. He died on March 24, 1983, at the age of 25. THE PARADE BEGINS
Carry Back would be the only member of the Florida-bred millionaire's club until the legendary Dr. Fager joined him in 1968. Susan's Girl, Foolish Pleasure and Affirmed stamped their membership cards in the 1970s. And then in the 1980s, the doors swung wide open and welcomed 16 new members, including such outstanding Florida-breds as Precisionist, Gate Dancer, Smile and Lost Code. By the end of 1989, a total of 21 Florida-breds had attained millionaire status. As the Florida-bred industry grew and purses reached record levels, new millionaires have joined the ranks at a steady pace over the past three decades. To

date, 172 Florida-breds have banked at least $1 million dollars. Of that number, 33 are multiple millionaires with Imperial Hint becoming the newest member of that club after winning the Grade 1 Vanderbilt on July 27. (See story on page 26) Skip Away wears the crown as the reigning all-time leading Florida-bred money earner with $9,616,360. When it comes to breeders who have bred the most Florida-bred millionaires, Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Stud, Arthur I. Appleton and John Franks have each recorded seven. Live Oak Stud also bred Kentucky-bred millionaire Za Approval. Ocala Stud can be credited with six Florida-bred millionaires bred solely and one bred in partnership. the dam of Revved Up, World Approval and Za Approval. She is also the dam of Florida-bred Grade 1 millionaire Miesque's Approval, who won the 2006 Eclipse Award as champion male turf horse. Live Oak Stud-bred Win Approval, a 1992 gray mare by With Approval out of Negotiator, by Hoist the Flag, was the Florida Broodmare of the Year in 2006, 2017 and 2018. She was also named the 2017 National Broodmare of the Year by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. “All of Win Approval's offspring are similar to her when it comes to personality. They're all independent and persnickety,” Live Oak Stud farm manager Bruce Hill said. “They are very happy just being horses out in their paddocks. We groom them, comb out their manes and tails once a week, and keep fly spray on them. But other than that, we just let them be horses.” Hill noted that while World Approval likes peppermints, as does Win Approval, it doesn't make either of them any friendlier. “If you're going to offer a peppermint to World Approval, it's best to be careful because he's more than a bit nippy,” said Hill. “As for Win Approval, she won't take a peppermint from your hand. But if you leave one on the fence post, she'll take it when she feels like it, maybe.” The retirees' paddocks have a unique location on the 4,500-acre Live Oak Stud property. “Mrs. Weber can look out from her house and see her retired horses. She really enjoys being able to do that every day,” Hill said. “They gave her lots of pleasure as racehorses and she believes it's her responsibility to give them a good life in retirement.” ACCOMPLISHMENTS APLENTY

Revved Up is a 1998 gray/roan gelding by Sultry Song, who is also another Live Oak Stud Florida-bred millionaire. Multiple-graded-stakes-winner Revved Up posted his best season as a 7-year-old in 2005, when he posted five stakes wins. Included in that number were the Niagara Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) and the Stars and Stripes Breeders' Cup Turf Handicap (G3). On the season, he banked career-high earnings of $576,940. He was named the 2005 Florida-bred champion older horse. Racing as an 8-year-old in 2006, Revved Up won three stakes, including the Sycamore Breeders' Cup Stakes (G3). Remarkably, he encored that with two stakes wins as a 9year-old and one stakes tally as a 10-year-old. He was retired in 2008 with $1,548,653 on 20 wins, 13 being stakes victories, nine seconds and one third in 43 starts. World Approval, a 2012 gray/roan gelding by Northern Afleet, had a tour-de-force season as a 5-year-old in 2017. He captured four graded stakes races at four different tracks: Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) at Del Mar, Woodbine Mile Stakes

(G1) at Woodbine, Fourstardave Handicap (G1) at Saratoga and Dixie Stakes (G2) at Pimlico. On the season, World Approval earned $2,043,600 and collected the 2017 Eclipse Award as champion turf male. He was also named the 2017 Florida-bred Horse of the Year, as well as Florida-bred champion older male, turf male and male sprinter. In 2016, World Approval had been named the Florida-bred champion older male and turf male. Making just three starts in 2018, World Approval won the Tampa Bay Stakes (G3) and then was given time off after two uncharacteristic lackluster finishes. He never returned to the races, being officially retired in February 2019. World Approval has a career bankroll of $3,062,363 on 12 wins, including nine stakes wins, two seconds and four thirds in 27 starts. ALSO IN RESIDENCE

By HEATHER SMITH THOMAS kin growths are fairly common in horses. Warts and sarcoid lumps are some of the most common, and sometimes hard to differentiate because they can have similar appearance.
S
WARTS
Andrew D. Smith, DVM, PhD, DACVS-LA (Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine) says most warts occur on young horses as a temporary problem. “Most are associated with equine papilloma virus 1 but they can have several forms or subcategories. Warts that occur in older animals such as penile warts are caused by equine papilloma virus 2. Those don’t go away, and some progress into squamous cell carcinoma. Aural plaques (warts in the ears) also don’t tend to regress,” he says. “Warts on young horses generally should be left alone; within a couple of months those warts regress and the horse will have a lifelong immunity and never get warts again,” he explains. These warts are contagious in that they can be transmitted between horses, or spread by fomites (flies, or something else that takes the virus from one horse to another, such as grooming tools or tack used on multiple horses). “Usually if a farm has one young horse with warts there will soon be many with warts. The whole group of yearlings may have warts,” says Smith. Those warts usually don’t become a problem unless they become so large or numerous around the mouth and muzzle that they interfere with eating, breathing or use of a bit. Warts on the penis are more problematic. “If they involve the entire glans penis. We usually have to remove those by freezing or doing a patial

phallectomy (removal of part of the penis). Horses with partial phallectomies do very well. Treating them any other way doesn’t get rid of them,” he explains. “If these warts are small and localized we can freeze them, or remove them with a laser. If we do a partial phallectomy the horse would not be useable for breeding, so we do those only in geldings. A partial phallectomy doesn’t work very well in stallions. If they get an erection (increasing pressure in the penis), during the first couple months while those tissues are still healing, this increases risk for surgical site rupture, breaking the sutures,” says Smith. “Usually you’d find the warts earlier in a breeding stallion (and be able to remove them before they become so large), because someone is looking at the penis more often than just twice a year.” A gelding is more likely to end up with larger growths or more of them. In early stages penile warts could be removed with a laser or by freezing, and the stallion would be able to continue breeding. By the time you see this in a gelding there might be 50 warts, or it has progressed to squamous cell carcinoma. A person might pull the penis out to clean it and wonder what this huge mass is.
Sarcoid on inner area of a rear leg 40 THE FLORIDA HORSE • SEPTEMBER 2019
There is also a congenital form of warts; the foal is born with them. “Those generally don’t regress. They may be located on the forehead, nostrils, lower lip, and sometimes around the thorax or hind legs. These need to be removed,” he says. The only warts that regress are in young horses that encounter the papilloma virus in their first year or two of life. Those warts usually appear around the face and muzzle, grow larger for a while, and then regress as the horse builds immunity to them. SARCOID
There are several types of sarcoid. Some are slowgrowing and some are more aggressive, but most of them do not regress. There are six types of sarcoid: occult, verrucous, nodular, fibroblastic, mixed forms and malignant. Sometimes these are very distinctive but often there’s a blurring of the margins; there can be mixes of each. “We rarely see these forms by themselves,” says Smith. The occult form is flat, hairless and often small and circular, but sometimes more extensive. “They usually appear around the mouth or eyes, or on the neck or medial aspects of the limbs, or hairless regions of the body. Sometimes they are hardly noticed; you may just see a little pigment change in the skin,” he says. “If they are extensive or in an area that’s not susceptible to trauma, I usually leave those alone and have the owner just watch them to see if they get bigger. In an area that is likely to suffer trauma, like the girth, we try to remove them. Most of them start out small and quiescent but if they are on the face or girth or along the horse’s side, tack rubs them. Any rubbing or trauma may irritate them and cause them to grow,” he says. Verrucous sarcoid growths are wart-like, grey and scaly but extend deeper into the tissues. “Sometimes they have a circular hairless patch around them that might look a little like ringworm, but because they are warty there may be multiple different types of lesions together. Both the occult and the verrucous sarcoid are usually slow-growing and not very aggressive, but susceptible to trauma (which may stimulate them to grow). They may be mistaken for warts. They both have a warty appearance,” says Smith. Nodular sarcoid can be type A or type B. “Type A has no skin involvement. They both nodular look like nodules underneath the skin (usually with hair still covering them)--like a firm lump under the skin. Yyou don’t really see anything that would make you think it’s a sarcoid. They generally form in specific locations such as around the eye or the medial aspect of the legs,” he says.
EquineCare_Warts.qxp_Florida Horse_template 8/9/19 3:45 PM Page 41
Fibroblastic sarcoids are nodular but hairless. “They look like masses with ulcerated margins. They can either be pedunculated masses (on a stem) or have a broad base. They may be ulcerated or look like granulomatous lesions. As such, they might be mistaken for exuberant granulation tissue (proud flesh), squamous cell carcinoma, cutaneous habronemiasis, pythiosis, etc. These growths can be very large and broad-based,” says Smith. Mixed forms are usually a mix of verrucous, nodular and fibroblastic. “Some portions may have a specific appearance, whereas others go into the other types,” he says. Malignant sarcoid is rare. “Usually these are just a large, mixed form that is locally aggressive and continues to grow. I’ve seen some that are rapidly growing, such as all the way down a leg, or covering whole portions of the face. There is no real treatment for those and it is inhumane to keep these horses alive, since these growths are very itchy and the horse is miserable. The other types tend to be painless,” he says. TREATMENTS FOR SARCOID
off. Because of the swelling and inflammation, the horse may be put on drugs to help control secondary inflammation. “One risk when using the BCG is possibility of side effects which could include anaphylactic reactions,” he says. “Many of the sarcoids around the eyes involve the eyelid, which means you can’t surgically remove them, so we use localized treatment like BCG or cisplatin which is a type of chemotherapy,” says Smith. Radiation therapy is used on some sarcoid lesions, but only a few hospitals offer this treatment. “This is an effective treatment option but the horse usually needs to be anesthetized for each treatment, so owners generally don’t choose it.” Chemotherapy has also been found useful in treating equine sarcoid. “Most of what I do is surgical removal, followed up by chemotherapy, since I am generally dealing with growths that other people have tried to put BCG on, or 5FU (Fluorouracil, a medication used to treat cancer) or Imiquimod cream (which is used to treat certain types of scaly growths on the skin or to treat superficial basal cell carcinoma) or some other topical treatments that merely poked the bear,” says Smith.
Sarcoid tumor
It’s usually best to leave most of them alone, because if they are biopsied or removed, they often grow back in larger, more aggressive form. “In our referral hospital we see the ones that people have unsuccessfully tried to treat, that haven’t responded to medical therapy such as Xxterra. 5-Fluorouracil, Imiquimod, BCG, etc. These treatments can be effective for some sarcoids; I only see the ones that recur after these treatments have failed,” says Smith. “Sarcoid is like a sleeping bear, and I tell people that you shouldn’t poke the bear. You need to shoot the bear, or leave it alone. If the bear is are in young horses that encounter asleep, don’t just poke it,” says Smith. Surgery is probably one of the papilloma virus in their first year or two of life. Those warts usually the more common treatments for sarcoids that have to be removed appear around the face and muzzle, grow larger for a while, and then for some reason, but the goal is to regress as the horse builds immunity to them. — Dr. Andrew Smith remove all of it. The size of the lesion makes a difference. “Probably “The veterinarian generally makes a treatment decision treatment based on size and form of the growth. The no treatment would work very well for a really large fifibroblastic sarcoids are more likely to be treated surgi- broblastic mass. Since sarcoids are caused by bovine pacally. Location makes a difference also, since we can’t ex- pilloma virus, treatment is not always as effective as cise the tissue around the eyes or on the eyelids,” he says. we’d like it to be,” he says. The virus enters the skin via trauma or fly bites and For sarcoid lesions around the eyes, a common treatment is injection of BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin), may lie dormant for many years in the skin. “Studies have which is an immune stimulant. “This produces a lot of shown that biopsies from normal horses (30 to 40%) are inflammation and makes the area very angry, and hope- positive for the virus. More than 90% of sarcoids samfully stimulates an immune response so the body will pled contain bovine papilloma virus,” says Smith. “Sarcoid masses have little fingers that go in all difight the tumor,” says Smith. If this works, the sarcoid becomes ulcerated and falls rections. They are similar to the root system of a tree;

Probably the most effective treatment is surhorses that already have the virus in their skin, we think that gical excision followed by some sort of chemotherapy, all they need is a traumatizing whether cisplatin or carboplatin injections, or radiation. event to get it going,” he says. — Dr. Andrew Smith The virus may have entered the skin years earlier, and beads of chemo to implant, in areas you can’t excise. These later the horse starts getting sarcoids. “This is what we beads keep releasing the drug into the tissue, extending think happens with most of the cases that occur on the the length of effective treatment,” says Smith. “There are several radiation treatments including a limbs. Horses’ legs are often getting bumped, scraped or nicked, which might stimulate the virus to create the linear accelerator and localized radiation beads (called brachytherapy). The newest way to increase the concengrowth,” he explains. “When people ask if I want to biopsy a growth to see tration of chemotherapy within the cells is electroif it’s a sarcoid I tell them absolutely not. Either I should chemotherapy. This method uses a machine that creates remove all of it and treat the base to remove the roots as a current across the lesion which changes the polarity of well (treating aggressively) or just watch it to see if it cell membrane and increases uptake of the drug. This grows. If it starts to enlarge, that’s when you want to re- form of treatment has shown promise. In one study, more move all of it. If you traumatize it, this just turns it into than 90% of the treated horses had no recurrence in the several years following the treatment, and all of them rea more aggressive form,” he says. “Another reason some sarcoids recur after treatment mained free of sarcoid for greater than a year,” he says. “The problem when you simply inject the drug (withis that most practitioners don’t have use of a laser or other tools that can excise tumors without spreading out the added sesame oil), is that it just disperses very them by inoculating the tumor bed. When you cut the quickly into the body and doesn’t stay in the target area long tissue with a blade (unless you can get huge margins enough. So once you inject the area, you need to change the around it), you inoculate the surrounding tissue with the cells very quickly with current. The problem with this treatment is that the horse needs to be anesthetized.” Some people are hoping that a vaccine might be developed. “Researchers are looking at the immune system and how we can make that work in our favor,” says Smith. Being proactive and preventing some of these problems would be much better than having to treat them. ■

Focusing on why the maintenance and care of your horse’s feet are important
FARM
ManageMent
No Hoof, No Horse I
f you’ve been in the horse industry for any length of time then you have heard the saying “no by Caitlin Bainum, hoof, no horse” and it is one Farm Management of the non-opinion based Agent comments that exist in the horse world. Some of the late greats such as Secretariat met their maker due to chronic hoof disease. It reminds me of something my mom always told me growing up: Be sure to take care of your teeth and your feet and they will take care of you! While equine dentistry is another topic, we will focus on why the maintenance and care of your horse’s feet are important. When I am looking at a horse randomly or for potential purchase, the feet are the very first thing I direct my attention to, if they don’t check out then I am quickly moving on to the next prospect. What is a hoof responsible for? Bearing weight, resisting wear, absorbing shock, and assisting in blood flow are just a few of its functions. Each of the four hooves are the support mechanism for the limb above it, and when you consider the sheer size of a horse in comparison to their hooves, this is impressive. A horse’s hoof must be able to distribute the weight of the forces above it while being functional and allowing the horse to move about without fatigue. There are many structures that make up the foot, and they work in concert with one another to transport the horse. When one begins to fail, you often see a domino effect and the resulting lameness of your horse. Additionally, many factors play a part in overall hoof health; genetics is one of the biggest and something you should pay great attention to, this is a “non-negotiable” factor and one that you takes as it is dealt to you. There are many genetic lines of horses that are known for cer-
tain features, stick to the features that do not effect structural soundness! Two other factors in hoof health are somewhat controllable, environment and nutrition. The environment can bring about dry or wet conditions and those each cause a response in the hoof, and too much of either one is not ideal. Moisture is necessary to maintain hoof quality, and hooves are constantly losing water so water in brought in systemically from blood and lymph supplies of structures in the hoof or environmentally from the ground. If extreme wet conditions persist, try to find a dry stall or paddock for your horse to spend partial time in or consider shoes if the conditions are unchangeable. I have found it easier to combat dry hooves than the aforementioned
soggy hooves. There are many products on the market to moisten the hoof. Nutrition is a major driver of overall horse health, but hoof health and hoof size is directly correlated to nutrition. Horses fed an optimal diet have an 80% increase in hoof-sole-border area size compared to horses fed a limited diet (D. Butler). Each part of the hoof contains various mineral concentrations that together determine the overall strength of that hoof. Horse with white hooves have poor feet right? Wrong. There is no evidence to support this industry theory. Hoof color is merely influenced by the pigmentation above the hoof. Young horses have a greater rate of hoof
growth than older horses. Hoof growth rate has been correlated with heart rate, foals have a heart rate almost twice as fast as an adult horse and therefore a significantly increased hoof growth. For a mature horse the average hoof growth per month is three-eighths inch. Hoof balancing, which is what happens when a farrier trims a horse’s hooves, is recommended every 4-6 weeks depending on the rate of growth. Does your horse need shoes? That is an open-ended question and the simple answer is, maybe! Shoes serve a definite purpose in many cases, but a lot of horses do just as well with a balanced barefoot trim on a regular schedule. Shoes play a part in combatting those genetics we discussed earlier or those extenuating environmental conditions and definitely in many performance horse realms that are asking for advanced movements on sometimes unfavorable surfaces for the horse. My best advice is to first understand what hoof care your horse requires and do your homework to find a farrier who can deliver the necessary care, and take absolutely no prisoners on the quest for an adequate farrier, after all they are behind the wheel so to speak. If you are new to horse ownership be sure to ask and ask again when you are unsure of hoof related matters. There are many old wives tales about hoof health, and some will cost you unnecessary money while others are sure to cost you time and patience. Build your network of industry professionals that understand the science of hoof anatomy and the intended use of your horse. This is NOT a one size fits all situation. Stay tuned for more articles on hoof anatomy, common diseases, and corrections of hoof issues. n Caitlin Bainum • UF/IFAS Marion County Livestock Agent • (352) 671-8400 cbainum@ufl.edu

■ Editor’s Note: If you would like an English translation of this column, please contact Brock Sheridan, Editorin-Chief at 352.732.8858 or email at: bsheridan@ftboa.com
