Highlights Mary Lisa Leffler and Gerona 92 capture the $5,000 DevoucouxHunter Prix at HITS Ocala for the second week in a row he Rolling Acres Farm family was all smiles as they wrapped up another week at the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. The group that works, trains and rides together celebrated their second consecutive win on Sunday in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix as high-performance rider Mary Lisa Leffler captured the blue ribbon aboard Rolling Acres Farm’s Gerona 92. “When one person wins, we all do,” said Leffler’s sister and co-trainer at Rolling Acres Farm, Patty Foster. “This has truly been a wonderful year here so far and we’re very excited with what we’ve accomplished, especially with this horse.” Leffler, of Brookeville, Md., and Gerona 92 showed together for over a decade in the Grand Prix ring before transitioning to Hunter competition. “This is the best horse I’ve ever had the pleasure of showing,” said Leffler of Gerona 92. “After so many years together, it’s still exciting for us to go out there every week and do what we do best, even when we’re trying something new.” A finalist at the inaugural Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final last September, Leffler is once again on target to qualify for the event’s return in 2012, this time in the tack of her longtime partner. In 2011, she finished in the top 10
T
aboard Wilder Mountain Farm, LLC’s Zivago. “We’re planning on being a part of the Final again this year,” said Leffler. “Last year was a great event and I’m even more excited this year to be showing Gerona 92. Also, my niece Ashley [Foster] is planning on qualifying for the $250,000 HITS 3’ Hunter Prix Final, so we have a lot of goals to look forward to this year.” After a beautiful trip over the first round course designed by Kerry Kocher, Leffler posted a top score of 88 to return in the second round. She finished with a second round score of 89 to capture the win. “I think one of the best parts of it all is the excitement,” said Patty Foster. “Our barn manager, Sheryl, has been taking care of Gerona 92 since she was imported to us over 10 years ago and to see her reaction when they announced the score was incredible. It’s funny because that mare has a special connection with Sheryl – Sheryl is the only one who can braid her. She won’t let any other braiders go near her! Her success means the world to not only Sheryl, but to our assistant, Sarah, Ashley [Foster], Kimmy [Saul] and everyone else at the barn.” Sunday’s class featured a wide array of professionals, juniors and amateurs on the road to HITS Championship Weekend. In the end, amateur Therese Peck of Flower Mound, Texas, aboard Cammy Turgon’s Scoop earned a score of 174 and was awarded the second place ribbon and Adrienne Iverson of New Berlin, Wis., a professional at Emil Spadone’s Redfield Farm, captured the third place ribbon aboard Redfield Farm’s Laredo with a score of 173.5. Rounding out the top five were highly-acclaimed hunter rider Hunt Tosh of Alpharetta, Ga., aboard Persistence, owned by KAC Horses, LLC, in fourth place with a score of 173 and Jane Gaston of The Plains, Va., aboard her own Lumiere in fifth place with a score of 171.75. Gaston and Lumiere have been a highly decorated duo at HITS Culpeper in the hunters and are favorites to make it into the 2012 Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final order-of-go.

Patoile Leaves a Legacy By Shanna Bellingham At the end of March, a filly that may never have come to be will turn 2 years old. For Sunday, known as Sassy at her current residence of Yancey Farms in Ocala, is considered a special gift by her owner Phyllis Harlow of Harlow Investment Enterprises. In 2008 David Beisel piloted Harlow’s mare Patoile to the Leading Mare Award at HITS Ocala as the mare with the most grand prix earnings during the circuit. The winner of this award receives a free embryo transfer, courtesy of Equine Medical Center of Ocala Stallion Services and performed by Dr. Corey Miller. “I had never thought about breeding before,” said Harlow, but she selected the sire For Pleasure because of his success in the grand prix ring, and in 2009 Patoile had a successful insemination and embryo transfer with the help of Dr. Miller. After the procedure, the recipient mare of the embryo transfer was boarded at Yancey Farms, near Harlow’s own farm. While the surrogate mare carried the foal, Patoile finished a successful 2009 winter circuit at HITS Ocala, and went on to win second place in the $25,000 Puissance at the Washington International Horse Show, clearing a 6’7” jump. Patoile’s filly was born in March of 2010, and Harlow said the filly looks just like her sire For Pleasure – a chestnut with socks – rather than emulating Patoile’s bay coloring
and refined features. “She [For Sunday] is very opinionated; she is not overly friendly. I think she is going to have a very strong personality,” said Harlow. Currently, For Sunday spends her time in a pasture with other yearlings and 2-year-olds, learning the rules of the herd. Harlow said there is currently no rush to train her to jump, although she named her for the day in which grands prix are held. Harlow is considering breeding For Sunday, and beginning her training by the time she’s 4, or perhaps starting her in light training sometime after she turns 3. “I would love it if she would be a grand prix jumper,” Harlow said. Although the story of Patoile’s breeding has a happy ending, there is sadness, too. Patoile was being conditioned to come back to the ring and HITS Ocala this season,

Thanks to the embryo transfer Patoile won as HITS Ocala’s 2008 Leading Mare, her legacy lives on for owner Phyllis Harlow
but she suffered a bout of colic in November and had to be euthanized. The previous winter, Harlow tried once more to breed the mare, but was unsuccessful, so winning the 2008 Leading Mare Award feels even sweeter now, Harlow said. “It makes the baby more special, for sure.” HCD Patoile (above) and For Sunday (below) as a foal (inset) and a yearling

The University of Florida in Gainesville hosted students from around the country at this year’s American Collegiate Horsemen’s Association (ACHA) Convention, held March 1-3. Students visited many equine venues in Marion County, and HITS Post Time Farm was an ideal learning opportunity for the eager students. Approximately 70 students attended the event at HITS and had the opportunity to talk with HITS CEO, Tom Struzzieri, course designers, announcers, commentators and management.
