There is no better time to aspire to become a better human being than the New Year. Our resolutions should focus on the global good, inspired by the phrase: it is better to give than receive, more blessed to serve than be served. This January 20th, we celebrated The MLK Day of Service; it is the moment to start the year off right by giving to others and by working together providing solutions and impacting our communities.
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?
TASK: PLANTING
Every year, this question is being answer by Americans across the Nation honoring Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy of volunteering. Serving is one way to build the "beloved community" that Dr. King spoke of in his historic remarks. Today 8 volunteers came together, to beautify Everglade Holiday Park, making a difference in Broward County!

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS
Volunteering is good for your health, promotes personal growth and encourages social responsibility. Also, volunteers gain professional experience and they have a 27% higher likelihood of finding a job after being out of work than non-volunteers. Last year, 65 million Americans volunteered nearly 8 billion hours. The estimated value of this volunteer service was nearly $175 billion. Volunteering and civic engagement cornerstone of a strong Nation!

Mulching
Mulch retains water helping to keep the roots moist.
Why mulching? Mulch conserves soil moisture, and reduces the need for irrigation. Mulch aids in the suppression of weeds, reducing the time spent in manually pulling weeds or the need for toxic herbicides. Mulch reduces leaching of fertilizer out of the soil; as it breaks down, it raises soil organic content. Mulch can improve the aesthetic appeal of landscape.
Mission accomplished!

Our actions have a direct impact in our planet, for this reason we all have the responsibility to protect the environment by engaging in activities with the communities where we live and work to improve our social and environmental lives. Maria Mercedes Hernandez Project Leader

In the celebration of MLK Service Day it is important to recognize that his work and efforts provided the road-map for the environmental justice: the principle that all members of a society have the right to clean air, water and soil, as well as a right to live in communities where they can raise their families in healthy and nurturing natural environments.
“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

because anybody can serve.”

MY CONTRIBUTION:
As a project Leader, I had enjoy every single moment that I had shared with people from my community and surrounding areas, kids, teenagers and adults . Some of them volunteer from their heart and others for community hours, but we all have found a common motivation: The Environment. For this reason, as an environment activist, I have created this magazine to explain the importance that is behind our volunteer project. I want to go beyond of just leading a group; I want to explain how our actions contribute to the protection of our natural resources and as consequence: our communities, our planet! One day those teenagers that today are looking for community hours; they will be the future Homeowners that with their decisions will impact the world! On this specific project celebrating MLK Day of Service, we learned about the importance of volunteering to make a difference in our community, country and Planet. We also learned the benefits of mulching to save water and protect the Environment. Thank you to all the volunteers for their outstanding job! I can’t wait to see you next time as we continue to help the environment. Thank you to Broward County for the opportunity to see the Alligator Show!
