ATTENTION MIAMI: LONDON IS CALLING. FROM HAND-STITCHED LEATHER AND SUEDE WALLS AND CLASSIC TUFTED SOFAS, TO MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ACCENTED BY LIMITED EDITION PHOTOS BY CELEBRATED PHOTOGRAPHY ARTIST TERRY O’NEILL, THE BOND ON BRICKELL CONDOMINIUM IS BRINGING THE BEST OF BRITISH GLAMOUR TO MIAMI’S BRICKELL AVENUE. The innovative design concepts are the creation of Loguer Design, whose museums, pavilions, private residences, mega-yachts and private jets have won countless awards around the world since the firm’s founding in Mexico City in the 1930s. The Bond marks Loguer Design’s

latest high-rise condominium project. Loguer Design has drawn inspiration from mid-century furnishings, Terry O’Neill’s classic photos, and some of today’s most fashionable designers to create common areas that are stylish and sophisticated, trendy but timeless. The result is a series of interior and exterior spaces punctuated by European marble, fine woods, exquisite leathers, iconic furniture selections and original works of art, including three metal-weave sculptures by Miami artist Tatiana Blanco. Residents and visitors will access the building via entrances on Brickell Avenue and South Miami Avenue. Multiple public transit options such as the Metromover and Downtown trolley, luxury hotels and retail outlets are just steps away, including The Shops at Mary Brickell Village. The under-construction Brickell CityCentre nearby will bring high-end shopping to the area through a partnership with Bal Harbour Shops. The Bond offers 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom condos, as well as exclusive lofts and penthouses. The building combines luxury amenities, fashionable art and design, chic interiors, and an unparalleled location on Brickell Avenue.

“The Brickell brand resonates internationally, so the start of construction on The Bond is in many ways a symbol of Downtown Miami’s rebound,” says Cervera Real Estate Managing Partner Alicia Cervera Lamadrid, who is leading the sales effort for The Bond. “Brickell is synonymous with an upscale, urban lifestyle that appeals to buyers from around the world and The Bond reflects the no-nonsense, classic timelessness and elegant approach to development that is the driving force behind Rilea Group. That’s a powerful combination in a competitive market.” Enjoying a premium location in Miami’s urban core and sporting fashionforward design elements, The Bond on Brickell introduces a new standard of luxury to the Brickell Financial District. Lina

Gaudenzi By: Naomi Gonzalez-Longstaff

“A CANDID AND VIVID INTERVIEW WITH LINA GAUDENZI FROM THE DUO THE NOUX AND 7TH RUNNER UP IN THE AMERICAN TV REALITY COMPETITION “THE VOICE”. GAUDENZI, BEING A FAN FAVORITE WILL BE RELEASING HER NEW SONG “WISH YOU WELL” WHICH WAS SELECTED AS THE OFFICIAL BRITWEEK SONG AND WILL BE PERFORMING LIVE AT THE CLOSING PARTY. Lina, what was your inspiration to get into the music industry? LINA: I am half swiss and American, and A friend of my brother, Christian Forest, and a group of friends were over at the house and we started to have an impromptu jam session. At that moment, I had this “magical feeling” that music was my calling and the right thing for me to pursue. My music partner is the Producer The Pabs. and our band name is The Noux (pronounced "the-nu") which is a play on words on the French 'nous'. We met and began making music together in 2013 before I was even on The Voice, and we continued to do so after I returned home from the show. We eventually decided that we make a great team and love creating music together, and that we wanted to start a duo, and this is how The Noux was born. We will be releasing our first single "Wish you well" (which is the BRIT Week promo song) from our debut EP, shortly before or on the day of the BRIT Week closing Party. Lina, how does it feel to have your song “Wish you Well” be selected as the official BritWeek song? LINA: It’s been an exciting time to be part of BritWeek Miami and having my song selected has been honor. In addition to “Wish you Well”, I will be singing a med-

ley of British songs with a special twist. There are so many genere of music today that inspiration can come from so many forms. Lina, which is your favorite musi-

cal inspiration? LINA: I love combining acoustic and digital elements in my music. But my inspiration truly comes from the people that are in the audience! When I connect and interact with my music, especially when I am on stage, that connection with people is magical! Able to bond with people is an amazing feeling and drives my inspiration for music.

LINA’S 5 FAVORITE BRITISH THINGS Favorite British Food Fish and chips Favorite British Spot Soho, London Favorite British Drink Cider Favorite British Song Glory Box by Forest Head

Lina, The Voice has been a great tool to get notice in the industry, how was your experience on the show? My coaches Cristina Aguilera and Adam Levigne were awesome to work with. This experience gave me the confidence to continue to pursue my career and push towards the direction to get the ground running and rock it! It’s a great platform for artist to be exposed and introduce yourself to the world. Another way I was able to introduce myself and connect with my fans is via social media. I’ve used Twitter to interact with people, send updates, and engage with my fans! I love it. My twitter name is @lindagardenzi

NEW COMER TO THE MIAMI SCENE BUT CERTAINLY NOT NEW TO THE GLOBAL PLATFORM OF FOREIGN EXCHANGE IS THE MARKET LEADER, AFEX. AFEX’s new US Sales Director, Laura McLoughlin led the expansion into this new market and explains “Trade in Miami had doubled in the last 10 years from $49.70 billion to $112.82 – its Customs District (52) remains the 11th largest in US. Everyone is aware that Miami is the gateway to the Americas, however it is also a growing hub for European and Asian companies looking to set up foreign subsidiaries as an entry way into the US. Given AFEXs stronghold in the European and Asia Pacific regions and it’s appetite for growth in The Americas, it made perfect sense to open our fourth US location in Miami (New York, Chicago and California being the others). AFEX’s core business is assisting companies with their global payments and risk management; however we are also strong in the private client space – Miami is a hotbed for foreign investors OF LONDO N

and high net worth individuals looking to relocate – they all need to transfer funds in and out of Florida – another big area of interest for us which made Miami so appealing.” Amusingly, Laura leads this charge from her new residence in Los Angeles, she adds “having just relocated from Florida to California myself, it is great to still have business in the region, which of course requires many trips back and forth – call it the best of both worlds!” Ashley Groves, Head of Partnerships discussed theirForeign Exchange (FX)Execution for Funds and High Net worth Individuals. AFEX over the years have prided themselves on helping hedge funds, venture capitalists, private equity houses and high net worth individuals, by improving the level of service and of course their rates of exchange.

The FX risk on overseas investments is often overlooked, and the Dodd Frank Act, has made hedging the FX volatility even more difficult, with some banks deciding to remove FX Forward facilities for a number of funds and private individuals entirely. Working with Fund Administrators and Wealth Managers, AFEX offers an alternative to the banks, providing clients with hedging strategies and tools in order to protect the ROI on investments. Traditionally New York has been the center for Fund Administrators and Wealth Managers, however Miami is a growing mecca for these types of opportunities ‘Miami has a growing presence on this area, coupled with the trade opportunity, AFEX is very excited to open its doors and offer our services locally’. On AFEX’s new Miami office opening ‘‘We are delighted to open our fourth US office in Miami and we are looking forward to establishing AFEX firmly in the region’ Christian Spaltenstein, General Manager, The Americas Laura on supporting BritWeek ‘BritWeek makes a lot of sense to us – it’s all about businesses in the UK, or from the UK, wanting to expand and do business internationally– – it’s a perfect fit on all accounts.” Welcome to Miami AFEX, we are thrilled to have you here!

LITTLE DREAMS FOUNDATION M I A M I |2 0 1 4 M A R C H 6 - 1 2

PHIL COLLINS & ORIANNE COLLINS-MEJJATI

BRINGING LITTLE DREAMS FOUNDATION TO MIAMI

Photos by Johnny Sjodergren

Interview by Justine Assal

THIS YEAR’S BRITWEEK BOARD IS PROUD TO HAVE CHOSEN A FANTASTIC CHARITY TO PARTNER WITH AND IS EXCITED ABOUT THE LAUNCH OF A NEW CHAPTER FOR THIS VERY INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION IN MIAMI. LITTLE DREAMS FOUNDATION IS THE OFFICIAL BRITWEEK MIAMI 2014 CHARITY AND WE HOPE THAT MANY CHILDREN’S LIVES MAY BE CHANGED FOR THE BETTER.

L

ittle Dreams Foundation, was established 14 years ago by Singer Phil Collins and his then wife, Orianne Collins-Mejjati with the simple goal to fulfill the dreams of children who are talented in music, sport and art but do not have the financial means to pursue these goals. Orianne Collins-Mejjati has been a Miami resident for two years now and in addition to opening up her jewelry boutique and being mother to 3 children, she and Phil Collins are now planning the expansion of the foundation in Miami. Orianne took some time from her busy schedule to discuss her passion for Little Dreams Foundation and how it is taking shape. OF LONDO N

20 | BRITWEEK MIAMI 2014OF LONDO

N

As I was looking through the website, I found children from Zimbabwe to Morocco and everywhere in between, can you explain how the children are chosen and also, how would potential children find out about Little Dreams Foundation We have special projects in both Zimbabwe and Morocco and an office presence so we do a large amount of outreach in both places. You will find children that are on the website who need donations for equipment and to help the family with the cost of lessons and travel etc. In order to be selected, we must receive a complete file documenting and detailing their activities in their chosen world and be able to demonstrate a financial need. Once a child is chosen to be in the foundation, we are contractually bound for one year which is renewable based on the child’s progress and motivation.

Many people may not think about the difficulty of trying to help a gifted child get the appropriate lessons, training, and mentoring but often it may be the difference in whether the child can reach his or her potential. Explain how it came about and the inspiration We realized that there are children around the world with incredible talents but such pursuits are expensive and many families do not have the financial resources to assist in developing talent. What’s the most unusual dream that you have come across since you started the foundation? We came across a boy in Morocco who was practicing tennis with a wooden stick. The child is very talented and it was incredible to watch him develop when he was given the equipment he needed. This was a very interesting story. Some of the children have disabilities and it is inspiring to watch how much they have to overcome in order to pursue their dreams.

You must find it interesting that the foundation strikes a chord in all corners of the world as basic needs of how to manage finances and help a gifted children success are the same. Yes, this does not change according to culture or country, developing talent whether in art, music, or sports requires a lot of resources. Financial needs must be met but often it is in mentoring the child that you really see their confidence grow. Often they are able to meet people in their chosen discipline that they admire, even if they never end up in the Olympics or becoming a world champion, they are better for the experiences and feel very special. Phil has mentored many of these children through the years and as you begin the program in Miami, how does he decide who to mentor personally? Phil is extremely involved in the music program and listens to the demos, helps to choose songs for the children, has sung with the kids and had them perform as back up singers. He is instrumental in the music program and oversees this world. In the other areas, we have many Godparents that are involved to help with mentoring the children in their various talents. I understand that the organization is beginning the search for local Miami children to enlist in its programs, that is fantastic timing with Britweek Miami having chosen the Little Dreams Foundation to be it’s official charity for 2014. What would you like Britweek attendees and readers of this publication to take away from this article? And how can they help? Well financial assistance is always welcome, if you go to the website you can assist a child directly but companies may choose to donate time and resources. Very often it is equipment and supplies that are needed to assist. Like the boy playing tennis with a piece of wood, help can come in many forms. I would like for any readers to consider how many resources go into the development of each child to develop their talent and to go to our website http://www.ldf.cc/en to find out more and decide how they can best contribute.

LOOKING BACK ON A

FOUR YEAR JOURNEY By: Justine Assal

I MET KEVIN QUITE SOON AFTER HE ARRIVED AS HER MAJESTY’S CONSUL GENERAL TO FLORIDA IN DECEMBER OF 2009. HIS PREVIOUS POST HAD BEEN IN AFGHANISTAN AND AS WE SAT IN HIS OFFICE HIGH ABOVE BRICKELL BAY, IT WAS HARD TO MISS THE STARK CONTRAST AND PONDER WHAT A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE WAS NEEDED FOR EACH.

F

rom day one, HM Consul General Kevin McGurgan has been an approachable and likeable presence in the community and a tireless advocate of British interests and culture. I recently sat down with Kevin and asked him to describe the journey and how he sees it today. “When I arrived, the Consul’s office was the third smallest operation in the USA out of 9.” While Kevin explained that he didn’t come with any preconceived plans, he realized that the team size needed to grow in order to adequately meet the initiatives at hand. As of 2014, Miami is third largest, behind only New York and Washington respectively. Under Kevin’s leadership, the Consul’s office has focused on three main areas although it must be noted that the shear scope of their work – as representatives of the United Kingdom Government, is actually far broader and encompassing. “We knew that we wanted to change the perception of Florida to people in the UK, as not just a sunny place to visit but a state with significant business enterprise”. “Unlike some US states, many people just don’t realize the level of science, innovation, entrepreneurial opportunity, and high tech industry that exists through-out Florida” Incredible teamwork with UK Trade & Investment led by Rebecca Mowat, and the Consul’s office have created awareness to the bi-lateral opportunities that exist and OF LONDO N

four years later, it is safe to say that Florida’s British American business community is more widely acknowledged with a clear structure in place to help further business expansion. The next initiative was to grow the Orlando/Miami consular team in both in size and strength. “The staff has doubled in size and the increased skill level in their jobs has allowed them to confidently exceed target in both business and helping British Nationals in crisis” Kevin continues

“One example in 2010 during the Iceland ash cloud with 35,000 Brits stranded in Florida - the community and theme parks all banded together to assist under the coordination of the Consul’s office”. Their call of duty is varied and can be described as “a job that is never done”. Thirdly, emphasis was placed on an effort to raise the profile of the UK in Florida and, in particular Miami. This has been done through many initiatives, that are both business , community /culture related. One fantastic example is with the Jacksonville Jaguars playing in London for the next 3 years and the Miami Dolphins scheduled to play this year. Additionally in 2014 with the 2ndBritweek upon us - bigger and better than last year, the success of the GR8 Campaign by UKTI, the upcoming British Garden Party at the Biltmore in May, the consolidation of BBC Worldwide in Miami, the announcement of Florida’ second major league soccer team with David Beckham (The first was in Orlando to fellow Brit Phil Rawlins in late 2013), England’s football team coming for spring training and the list goes on… Florida is a little more British than when Kevin arrived in 2010. So what’s next for HM Consul General? Head a few hours North to our neighbours in Canada and Kevin, wrapped in a parka, will be heading up UK Trade & Investment. Kevin recalled his proudest moments including the numerous charity runs over the years that most recent culminating in the completion of his first marathon and raising over $5,000 to “not grounding out the opening pitch of the Marlins vs. Mets game”. In his affable way, Kevin summed it up “I’m really quite chuffed to do what I do to help” “now I shall have the opportunity to represent my country in another place and in a new culture”. A decidedly more British feel to this next post but a bit nippier than Brickell Bay.
