' Let's turn toward the light, Darling; and in doing so, physically and spiritually, we impact our health and overall well-being so that we can take ownership and responsibility. We’ve all been cooped up and restricted way too long—a year, in fact—and now that we’re approaching a beautiful Spring and Summer, I encourage all of us to really pay attention to our mood—our state of mind—which is directly affected by light. The sun is glorious and has a magical healing power; so, absorb your share. And be sure to read what Lyn Ross, our Beauty Editor, has to say about sunscreen. Biologically, light impacts our sleep, cognition, temperament, and whole-life harmony and flow. Light even helps us sleep and rest better at night, stabilizing our circadian rhythms. Psychologically, light can decrease depression and increase energy and joy—and we all could use more joy. I love how Flourish Digital Magazine’s new Gen Z apprentice, Alexandria Lee, along with her girlfriends, created their own outdoor fun to absorb the sun. We can do the same—and in many different ways. We have lots to share in this Spring issue about beauty, make-up and fashion—from high-end luxury with Designer Lizz Russell, to the greatest resale, consignment, and gorgeous thrift finds for a fraction of the cost. Read my own personal story, Divinely Aligned: Through Fame, Fortune, Loss and Divorce — Profile of a fairytale marriage; then travel and experience Cuba—through the eyes of Dr. Gemma Beckley, her daughter and her granddaughter. Our feature articles are always encouraging—from college students, millennials, mothers, businesswomen, Baby Boomers and inspirational leaders alike. Remember to turn toward your inner light to see yourself clearly, brightly and beautifully.
All the best!

2020 was a year that will never be forgotten for many reasons. With that in mind, covid-19 was not going to stop my friends and me from showing ourselves selflove. In the summer of 2020, two of my closest girlfriends and I decided to have a socially distanced picnic at Chastain Park. We all tested negative for covid-19 prior to the event. We had planned on having vegan sandwiches, cookies, fruit, and Italian sodas on a nice sunny day. Fast forward to the day of the picnic, and the forecast was cloudy with a high chance of rain. Knowing that there was a good chance our picnic would get rained on, the three of us still decided to venture out to the park. As soon as we got there the thunder and sprinkling began. This might sound crazy, but we had hopes that it would stay a light drizzle, so we decided to set up our spot. The beginning was fun and full of laughter as we ate, took pictures, and just chatted about life and fond memories. > FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 9
Then the lightning started and it began pouring down harder. Someone else might have constituted this as a day ruined. What did we decide to do? The three of us (Alexandria, Jayla and Alicia) had the brilliant idea of moving the picnic to the living room of my house. Honestly, looking back I could not have asked for a more perfect day. I admire our positivity and creativity throughout the entire course of events. We still laugh about it to this day. <

The fact that you woke up this morning is a beautiful thing—and as long as you keep waking up every morning, you have an opportunity to be who you were meant to be. We get so caught up in the noise and busyness of our lives that we forget to take the time to just be still. We forget to take the time to resurrect those forgotten hopes and dreams. Stop, be still, listen to your soul, and then be who you were destined to be. It’s Springtime! The time of fresh beginnings! However, perhaps there are some things we need to shed or reset before we spring into the freshness of the season. FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 12
Take this scenario: You are in the middle of a big project. Perhaps you are working on your thesis or a business plan. Pages and pages of ideas and thoughts and solutions and research...and what happened? Your computer froze! What?! You panic. You can hit the refresh button, but you run the risk of losing all your work. What do you do? I would dare say that many of us have encountered this experience at least once in our adult lives. However, sometimes, there is a benefit to hitting that symbolic “refresh” button —and wiping out what existed before. >
You can start all over again! What about this scenario: Life can get so complicated, and sometimes we find ourselves in the midst of engaging with “messy” people. For those who may not have heard that term before, it refers to a person who always keeps chaos going by implanting certain comments or actions that cause others to possibly be at odds with each other, especially in relationships. Some other ways to describe a messy person might be a gossip or a tactless person. Some reality shows can be quite messy! If you were to hit the “refresh” button in your life, you could eliminate messy people. Sometimes we find ourselves in the midst of situations that are time-consuming, complex and stressful. This can be an inner conversation where we allow too many individuals to occupy space in our head, and it causes us to be confused. We have difficulty entertaining everyone’s opinions and comments, and we can’t even hear ourselves think over all the mental noise. Refresh! Hitting the “refresh” button in our lives can be a highly effective tool. We may also have to hit the “delete” button to remove the messy individuals as well. I’m just saying! The world is so full of all kinds of noise. Not just audible noise but noise from too much information, too many opinions, too many options—it’s too much noise! Recently having the experience of staying at home for an extended period of time has helped us to evaluate a few things. When we are reduced to only having access to the essentials, we may find that we do not require as much as we thought we did. It’s almost as if a whole new world opens up and we find ourselves exploring new options, that, in some cases, work better in our lives. Maybe it is time to hit the refresh button in your life. What needs to change? What needs to be eliminated? What needs to be done differently? What new experiences are there for you to enjoy? Many people have begun to plant their own gardens during a season of staying at home. As a result, they have been able to grow their own vegetables and thus reduce their grocery bills. They have also found the gardening experience to be therapeutic. Two for one! How about that? Produce and therapy, all in one seed planting! That only happened because they hit the refresh button. Sprang into action, and just did it.
I am Paula G. Voice! I am a sagacious independent lifestyle influencer. I am embracing my own journey and I am sharing a soliloquy of seasons on the journey. I am influencing dreamers to do the same by breathing life into their vison and ultimately living the reality of that vision! It is never too late to embrace your journey and live your dream. Flourish! Visit Paula’s blog at www.paulagvoice.com for additional soliloquies of the journey.
Is it time for you to hit the refresh button in your life? If so, press the button, smile, and do something that gives you joy. This is a new season! Celebrate the things God gives you in life. Flourish! Embrace life itself. Live! Unless of course...you prefer the alternative? I didn't think so. In this season, spring into action and do something that will give you lasting joy. Let us know how it works out. <

MAKE YOUR CLAIM
The excitement of the new year barely had time to take hold before my postal carrier busted it all up. Mine was a clear case of shooting the messenger—but I was truly heated when Miss Yolanda handed me a pile of mail that included three freshly printed tax documents. “Right,” I thought. “Party’s over. Time to start the tax prep game again.” Looking at the 1099s, I started thinking about charitable contributions I'd made in 2020, my medical expenses, and all the other things I might claim in order to reduce my tax liability. With my children all grown up, I knew claiming dependents, childcare or educational expenses would not be options.
BY LAURIE MARIE RENFRO FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 14
Then, it dawned on me. I am dependent on me, so, I wondered, can I claim myself as a dependent? Now, before you rush to add a new dependent to your W-4, I must tell you the official answer to that question is a firm “No.” When it comes to the IRS, you cannot claim yourself as a dependent. But, as it pertains to your real life and the self care that a quality life demands, you certainly can claim yourself… and you should. I understand the idea of claiming yourself might be new. Few of us were taught to embrace the power of our being, our unique identity and our individual agency. Even some of the most haughty of us have skipped the foundational step of making a soul-level claim on our lives; we've gone straight to making claims for our lives. This distinction is crucial. >
Failing to make a claim on your life while trying to make a claim for your life is akin to choosing not to buy the life insurance policy but still expecting the payout to your survivors. And, when you don’t have a solid foundational claim on your life—separate from, yet, among the lives of others—you set yourself on a solo path of pure competition that is devoid of the benefits of collaboration. We all know that competition rewards only the winners—even if the win is only by a hair. That approach leaves most of us out— beat out and burning out. Claiming ourselves among others is acknowledgment of distinction and interdependence and allows us to launch cooperative relationships and communities that support and root for our success. I will admit I am just now getting to the nittygritty of claiming myself. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I’ve been “go me!” all these years. But in hindsight I can see the fragmentary claim I’d made on my life was insufficient to empower a full walk of my own talk. Finally at the wheel for real, I am thrilled to know that I’m not too late. I am clear, though, that I have to get down with some specific and practical steps if I’m to avoid losing more time and more opportunities. Inspired by California Representative Maxine Waters, the first step I’ve taken is in “reclaiming my time.” This has required I temper social, cultural and religious indoctrination that casts me as always available and in service to others. Taking to heart the brilliant truth that self care is not selfish has gone a long way toward this end. A resulting and enviable testimony to this is a luxurious six-hour stretch of alone time I now enjoy every Friday despite sharing a home with my two adult daughters. Step two, inspired by simple frustration—plus a good friend’s love for Marie Kondo—was to clean up, clear out and order the spaces where I live my life. No, I mean, for real. Intuitively I’d always known, and even said out loud, that what I really want is a place for everything and everything in its place. But, because I hadn’t made a whole claim on my life, this claim that I was making for my life was never fully realized.
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 15
The third step is still in progress and may just turn out to be an ongoing practice. As a spiritual seeker experiencing the world through the Godin-me, I am making the strongest claim on my life by getting to know and embracing the divine me. I’m talking the “me” that is beyond description and descriptors. The me beneath the costumes and adornment I put on to fit in and to feel accepted. In all actuality, to fool my self and others. I am learning that the journey to my true self includes the challenging process of identifying and laying down expectations that have been put upon me by others, as well as untrue and unrealistic ideas that I have formed on my own. Increasingly free of soul encumbrances, pathways are opening where real promise can bloom. Since I’m a relative novice at this, I can’t call my three steps exhaustive. And, as my life is not the same as yours, I can’t say my steps are the ones for you. What I do know is: We all are doing this thing called Life and we want the best that it has to offer. To get to that flourish of abundance we each must, first, make our claim. <

Spring into the
newness of life
by Donnella Cranford
When I think about Springtime, there is a freshness, an excitement and an expectation of newness that rises up within me. Spring is one of my most favorite times of the year because the blooming of flowers, the resurrection of green leaves on the trees and the freshness of the grass all remind me that life is continually being renewed. Isaiah 42:9 tells us that the former things have come to pass and new things God now declares. Spring signifies and fulfills this promise outlined by the prophet Isaiah. Think about it. The verb form of spring means "to move upwardly and forward," and that is exactly what God provides for us. Spring is considered a time of new beginnings because old things pass away and become new. It is left up to us to move self-assured as we find joy in this promise of God. What better time to do it than right now, in the Spring of the year. Spring into the newness of life! When we consider newness, we think about renewal, the birth of something new—rebirth. In the Spring of 2021, begin something new. Consider the following: Start with renewing your mind by reading and internalizing a Scripture each day or one per week. Identify positive affirmations to write down and review each day. Explore your creativity and launch a new idea such as taking a class in photography or pottery. Investigate your options.

Take better care of yourself by eating healthier and taking a walk at least three times a week. Declutter spaces in your living area by giving yourself permission to discard things you have not worn or used in a year. Declutter your mind by allowing the old unwanted ways of thinking or ideas that do not add value to your life to be replaced with new and positive thoughts. Be intentional about this daily. Isaiah 45:3 assures us that God will give you treasures that are hidden—secret riches so that you may know that He is God. This Spring, explore those treasures that are available to you: Welcome the newness of life! Do the work. There are brand new things waiting for you to discover. <

Spring has arrived, and with it comes a sense of excitement and renewal— especially in the beauty space. Do you feel it? It's the sense that there's time for a change, an update or an edit.
While there is a certain comfort in your favorite lipstick shade or having developed your go-to skincare routine, there is also something exciting about the prospect of thinking outside your beauty box.

It's here! One of the easiest ways to ease into spring beauty is with a great set of brushes. Using brushes is the key to a flawless finish. You don't need a lot of brushes, just a few good ones. Blending and building are much easier with brushes, so take time to find a few that feel good in your hand and are easy to use. If you're not in the mood to buy new ones—but who isn't?—be sure

Lyn Ross and I both know that when it comes to how you feel, look and behave, age is just a number. Using sunscreen daily helps skin maintain a youthful appearance As we approach sunnier days both figuratively and environmentally it’s time to start thinking about the one product that works immediately upon application: sun protection. Did you know that wearing sunscreen year-round not only helps maintain a youthful appearance, but it also protects your skin from cancer-causing UV rays— which is why it’s imperative to wear year-round sun protection even on cloudy days!
4
It's so easy these days to incorporate sunscreen into your daily skincare routine, with so many modern formulations in a variety of textures—such as waterresistant, or city blocks in sprays, lotions, creams, gels, sticks, primers, mineral powders, beauty-balm creams and foundations. Depending on your needs there is a sunscreen that is sure to fit your lifestyle!
Things you need to know about choosing sunscreens: 1. Broad-spectrum sunscreen: means the product will cover and shield against UVA and UVB rays. 2. Water-resistant: indicates that the product will protect the skin in water for a specified duration of time.
3. Sun protection factor (SPF): This numerical factor provides information on the level of protection provided. A minimum of SPF 15 or 30 is recommended for everyday wear. When in the sun, it is important to reapply sunscreen to exposed areas every 90 to 120 minutes, or as the product label indicates. 4. Active ingredients: Check to see whether the active ingredients are chemical or physical sunscreens. Physical sunscreens most commonly contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which provide a physical barrier on the skin that reflects dangerous UV rays. Chemical sunscreens contain chemicals, which protect the skin by interacting with and absorbing ultraviolet energy. Both are effective, but chemical sunscreens may have a higher chance of producing skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
6
Steps to applying sunscreen: 1. Be generous. According to The American Academy of Dermatology, most people only apply 25–50 percent of the recommended amount. Apply at least “a nickel-sized dollop to the face alone” and approximately a shot glass– full for exposed areas of the body (the equivalent of two tablespoons).
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 23
2. Check yourself in a mirror. Take care to apply sunscreen evenly and don’t forget spots like your ears, hairline and neck. 3. Apply before you leave the house. Plan ahead. Sunscreen should be applied at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Chemical formulations take this amount of time to reach their full protection potential. While mineral sunscreens begin working immediately, to create good habits I always suggest applying before heading outdoors. 4. Massage it in. When using a cream or gel sunscreen, be sure to massage the product onto the skin for better absorption. 5. Sunscreen must be the closest product to your skin for optimal protection. Apply foundation make-up over sunscreen. Using a mineral foundation, bronzer and blush provides an extra layer of protection and can be reapplied during the day. 6. Re-apply. When exposed to direct sun, be sure to reapply at least every two hours and immediately after swimming, sweating or towel drying. <

Consignment, Resale &
Vintage Shopping & Styling If you’re a trendsetter who loves one-of-a-kind pieces from another era, and you hate the thought of showing up looking predictable—or, even worse, being dressed like someone else—then you might like vintage shopping. Real vintage can come from designers’ highfashion collections, women's custom designs, good-quality brand names and goodquality no names. The thread that runs through all vintage is high quality and desirability. Darling, a wonderful way to look fabulous all the time—without breaking your bank account wide open and going for broke to look great—is shopping consignment and resale stores. Like any store or boutique, you’ll want to know which shops suit your taste and fashion personality type best. The best consignment and resale shops provide personal service that you will love. By getting on the mailing list and getting to know the sales staff, you will be one of the first to hear about promotions and sales. Otherwise, you’ll need to stop in often to find the best merchandise. Make sure to try everything on and look in different sizes because some items have been altered and you probably won't be able to return them. Don't forget to look for accessories while you're there. You’ll pay a fraction of the original price for the same quality and style. Two of my favorite shoppers and fashion stylists who offer consignment, resale, and vintage clothing and accessories are Normie Taylor of Stormie's Klozest and Kailen D. Drayer of A Broke Beauti.

I Believe A Pretty Penny Can Buy You the World! My first love has always been budgeted fashion. I was never one to go along with the latest fashion trends. Editorial vibes have always been so fascinating to me. Why put on a black skirt with a white top when you can mix it up with fun colors and prints? Dressing up was my go-to relief. But to buy clothes you have to have money. >

I noticed my gift for creating something out of nothing when I was a teenager. My grandmother took me into a Goodwill store, and I was amazed at how much you could get for so little. I started off just going to Goodwill, to find single pieces for school or parties. >
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 28
When I got to college, it became the thing to show off your thrifted mom-jeans that you got for fifty cents and made your own. What I thought was a gift didn’t make me unique anymore. >
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 29
Then I tried something that no one else had thought of. I decided that instead of just getting pieces from Goodwill, I could go to any thrift store and put together entire looks! People would compliment me on my outfits, and I would go into great detail about how much my outfit cost. Someone suggested that I could definitely help other people find stylish head-to-toe outfits...and this is how A Broke Beauti was born. >

I created this name based on two things. One: I was a broke college student at the time; and two: Beauti was a spin-off of a YouTube channel my husband and I started. (That is a whole story on its own.) Currently, I assist individuals with virtual styling, shopping, and purchasing vintage/stylish pieces from my website. Thrifting is a means of expression—and a whole different avenue and spin on the word fashion. Not everyone has the eye to turn anything into something. The tagline for my business is “A Pretty Penny Can Buy You The World.” I believe this to be so true. <

DESiGNER LiZZ RUSSELL
chats with Chloé Taylor Brown
My first fashion rendezvous with Lizz Russell was through a mutual friend in Atlanta, Georgia well over twenty years ago. Lizz was in town visiting from San Diego, California presenting her new fall fashion collections at the time. We hit it off nicely. I even did a photo shoot wearing a few of her amazing pieces that somehow melted on my body and seemed to flow effortlessly with each pose in front of the camera. Lizz is soft spoken, and she smiles with her eyes the way Tyra Banks teaches. She is fierce and intentional about her designs though, and her intuitive side is keen as well—one of many things I really love about Lizz and her work. > FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 32
Lizz Russell believes that "every woman should have her own style," and that "individuality and confidence are the pillars of the The Lizz Russell Collection." In my recent conversation with Lizz Russell I asked her what she was most excited about for Spring 2021 with her collection. LIZZ: Chloé, I'm so excited about an idea I had years ago, and it's manifesting and coming to life in 2021. It's very special to me. CHLOÉ: What is it, Darling? LIZZ: I've created a Luxury Scarf Collection and it's here and available! The first collection is a limited edition collection—and perfect for Zoom dressing—and can be worn several different ways. CHLOÉ: Lizz, the last time I spoke with you, you didn't say a thing about what you had up your sleeves about your scarves. Was that on purpose? LIZZ: It's just timing. And now seemed like the right time. CHLOÉ: Isn't it amazing how many creatives took the uncertainties of covid-19 and the time of social distancing to create? >
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 33
LIZZ: Yes, it truly is, Chloé. I just returned from Bahrain, visiting my son and working. While I'm there, I am surrounded by beauty—and my creativity kicks in to a higher gear. I do fashion shows, photos shoots and really enjoy myself, my son, and his fiancé. CHLOÉ: Tell me more about your scarves—and which is your favorite? LIZZ: The LR Luxury Scarves are 100 percent silk. They are size 35 x 34 and $125.00 each. They must be drycleaned only and stored in a cool, dry place. The box these beautiful scarves arrive in is perfect for storage! And, Chloé, my favorite LR Luxury Scarf is the one that speaks "LOVE." But I love them all. <

Chloé says she was called a “hell cat” by her father. Rick wanted her to “fulfill her dreams and ambitions of being an international model"— which she did. And even when they began having children, they hired a nanny and Chloé didn’t miss a beat as it relates to modeling. As a result, Chloé says, she was called a “hell cat” by her father. She was known to do what she wanted to do. So she pursued her career, never slowing down or shrinking who she was. Rick was certainly not one to hold his spouse down from doing what she wanted to do. He'd known going into the marriage that she wanted to be a model. Often in relationships one person puts their career or dreams on hold to support the other. Rick and Chloé did not. They shared their dreams before they even started to date. This allowed them to be more authentic and supportive of one another. After moving overseas to play basketball, the couple settled down in Atlanta, where they still reside. When asked to think back over their professional lives and share two highlights, Chloé reminisced about how she loved developing and becoming who she wanted to be in San Francisco. She said a highlight was when they were living in Milan, Italy. "I was at the top of my career and Rick was at the top of his." During one of Chloé’s fashion shows, Rick and Paul—husband of Pat Cleveland, esteemed runway and print model—were walking with their children, "and everyone wanted to know: which models did these children belong to? It was all a fantasy being lived out." For her, the best part was that she was able to show up and simply be herself. While there were many highlights during the couple’s marriage, one of Chloé’s fondest memories was when she saw her dream house for the first time. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful in securing a chance to see the house again because she couldn’t remember the address or the street. >

purchased her dream home. To say the least, this was a wonderful time in their lives. It was all they could hope for: They were in love and traveled back and forth to Europe with their children. Rick’s highlight was the NBA draft. He had no idea where he was going but when he found out it was the San Francisco Bay Area it was a big deal because his sisters lived in San Francisco and he hadn’t seen them in several years. His second highlight was hitting the last-second, game-winning shot with Real Madrid. To win in this way was also a career dream come true. People in Spain still send pictures and videos from this game. There is a high that you experience in life when things are going well, and you are truly living your wildest dreams. But we all know that there will be ebbs and flows, highs and lows in life.

From Rick, Chloé gets “truth and vulnerability. Rick is determined to do whatever he can for his family. But mostly I like that we’re friends. That’s the thing. and Chloé time to find and purchase a new house. How easy could it be? In December of 1998, The Holy Spirit spoke again and told Chloé she was going to have another baby. They went to church and during the sermon Chloé and Rick knew instantly that it was true. Until that moment, she had had no idea they were four weeks' pregnant with their fourth child, Joshua. At the time, Rick was coaching high school kids, doing basketball lessons and sports camps, and training kids. He was in a really nice gym and helping to develop his own children as athletes as well.

by another woman. Rick had an affair.

Communication between Chloé and Rick was broken. Rick turned to his friends. They advised him to put himself first. Make himself happy. He listened. He thought happiness was having an affair and leaving his wife and children. If someone came to him for advice now, knowing what he now knows, he would tell them to communicate, and get outside counseling aside from your inner circle. He did not seek professional help and didn’t realize he needed it. He thought he had done all he could do. His kids were grown and gone. He had to do some soul searching. He knew what he was looking for—and it was financial freedom. He thought he'd found it in this other woman. The woman Rick met promised him a grand life—and for him she was a “sugar mama.” Rick wanted to go back to Spain to return to the limelight, where he had hit that winning shot. He wanted to hear all the cheering again. Chloé was blindsided. She didn’t know that Rick was having an affair or even planning to leave; she only knew things were falling apart, and sabotaged. Nothing was working out and she was about to have a nervous breakdown, so she went away for six weeks to stay at her sister’s house. While she was rejuvenating and re-centering, Rick was angry whenever he called. Later Chloé realized that an affair speaks on its own: It is secretive and deceitful, and has its own language. Rick was trying to make her wrong.

While Chloé was at her sister’s, she knew that Rick missed her and wanted her to be home, but she couldn’t figure out what was going on. Until their youngest son, Joshua, told his mother that he had overheard his father speaking with another woman. Everything came crumbling down. Yet again, the Holy Spirit spoke to Chloé. She knew things that Rick could not deny. Chloé released all negativity and forgave. It was then that things started working out for her again. Rick started having unforeseen and unfortunate things happen to him. Rick did not believe in himself or love himself, which is what had made him leave his family in the first place. He had found everything except happiness. He ran from himself into a real-life nightmare. He had to snap out of it. The family lost everything, but Rick was desperate to come back home to start over after just three months of leaving—if Chloé would have him.

Rick and Chloé's love for each other never died. When Chloé watched him work on himself—with spiritual counseling, therapy, personal development—plus constant begging for a year and a half, Chloé gave him a second chance. Rick wanted to make it right. Chloé did too. They worked it out and got married again on their original anniversary two years later. They were able to come back in every way as a married couple. When asked what he would tell other couples, Rick says it is vital to search your heart, "to see if you feel like this is the person for you. You have to know it in your heart without a doubt. If you find yourself doubting, having second thoughts, experiencing roadblocks or conflict, there is going to be an issue. Pray, meditate and put in the work. "The actual work will come. Not projecting my out-of-the box expectations and way of thinking onto Rick is what I have learned. In addition, I’m working on vulnerability, speaking clearly, intentionally and specifically, which is helpful in any relationship. A person's Big Life Game will come and unfold, especially if they create and follow their own life's mantra." Rick adds, "Because Chloé and I are divinely aligned, I will always be reminded to focus on our shared vision. Together, we'll follow our marriage mantra."

Grace FEMININE & DIVINE
by Chloé Taylor Brown
Did you know that spending some time barefoot in the sand, or on the grass or dirt, is what our bodies expect? Of course, as humans we have evolved, with our sophisticated thinking; however, our bodies crave and need earth contact. I grew up in rural Mississippi playing barefoot in the summer dirt. And as I write this piece I am reminded of those hot summer days spraying cool water on my brothers and sisters from the water hose, and then playing and splashing our bare feet in the mud we made. I'm longing for that again, and also to stroll along a long, white sandy beach in Zanzibar, Tanzania. It looks like the one above; or, I could go for one of the beautiful white sand beaches of the Florida Gulf Coast. When I am free to stroll on the beach in my flowing colorful sarong wrap, I feel more alive, at peace, creative, graceful, and grace-filled—from both a feminine and divine point of view. >

Feminine Grace Divine Grace
Feminine Grace is poise, charm, class, and style; flow; ease of movement; simple elegance. It means to adorn, beautify, embellish and enrich.
Divine Grace is undeserved "divine" assistance; a virtue from God; favor; approval; kindness; regeneration; and charisma.
Charisma comes from the Greek word, Charismata, which means: "grace coming to visible effect." In other words, grace is a gracious gift. A charismatic woman who has embraced her femininity (feminine grace) has a personal magic of leadership about herself. She knows how to attract others to her in a positive way. She is charming, alluring, encouraging, captivating, appealing, magnetic, attractive and enchanting. The word enrich also means "grace; to make rich or richer, especially by the addition or increase of some desirable quality, attribute, ingredient or experience." In other words, enrich means: to add beauty; to make more, to improve. So then, when a woman enriches herself she is doing a beautiful thing for herself by making more of herself and improving herself in areas that truly matter to her. When a woman combines feminine grace with the charisma of divine grace, she acquires a personal magic with arousing leadership and magnetic charm. Indeed, grace is the ultimate key required for self-realization—spiritually, personally, professionally and aesthetically. The goal is to merge feminine and divine grace with our individuality and personality, and our heart's desires. This has the potential to transcend to a gracious gift that actually shows up and manifests in our daily life.
How to Enhance Grace in Your Life:
Own your divine grace and feminine power by knowing who you are as a feminine divine being. Own your grace by valuing yourself highly. Own your grace by being present, self-aware and true to yourself. Own your grace by making a clear decision about what you want, now— especially moving beyond covid-19. Own your grace by knowing how to blend and merge your personality, your individuality, your talents and your gifts to accomplish your heart's desires. Own your grace by speaking boldly and with certainty, and by showing up passionately and purposefully. By owning your grace you will stay focused and in alignment—and you will flourish.
Dirt and Sand Under Our Bare Feet is an Environmental Medicine When I played outside without shoes as a kid I didn't realize I was doing something good for myself then. In fact, it was amazing; and I've been longing to get mud—and especially sand—between my toes again real soon. Even though I couldn't explain that "kid joy," I now know I was actually absorbing environmental medicine as my feet made physical contact with the surface of the Earth. And as a country girl at heart, I know it's long past time for "grounding"—connecting with the world around me by walking barefoot on sand to reconnect with the earth and myself. Why? Because it is one way that I know I can own my grace then blend that with my heart's desire, and flourish. < FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 53
Cuba AN INTERGENERATIONAL PERSPECTIVE: Travel to Cuba with Mother, Daughter & Granddaughter
reminiscences from:
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 54
Museo de la Revolución As we walk into the Hotel Inglaterra in the heart of Old Havana, the 1875 neoclassical structure provides a vibrant connection to Cuba’s Spanish heritage. Since we are located in the central corner of Havana and right across the street from the Central Park, the opportunity for constant cultural activity is enticing. Each evening we enjoy the musicians and the daily ritual of Cubans sitting in the café or promenading around the park. Our visit to the Museo de la Revolución begins our adventure. This museum tracks Cuba’s history from preColumbian culture to the present socialist regime, with a strong focus on key revolutions, providing background for when Cuba finally gained independence from Spain, which led to the era of Fidel Castro (since 1959). Though the museum tracks Cuba’s history from preColumbian culture, our interest was on the second floor, which showed us the president’s office where Fidel Castro was sworn in as Prime Minister of Cuba in 1959 after the ousting of then President Batista. Castro was a Marxist–Leninist, and served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1961 to 2011. A major force initiating revolution was led by university students. Well described is the struggle of Fidel Castro in mounting an army. In one particularly well-known battle in 1953, Castro made a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks—but obviously others led to success. The events from this time until his presidency frame an interesting era of history, so with our visit we sought more understanding. Heavily publicized during the United States' John F. Kennedy Administration was the Cuban Missile Crisis (in 1962), when the Soviet Union was found to be building weapons sites in Cuba, but

thankfully nuclear war was averted. By 1976 Fidel Castro was sworn in with the title of President, and stayed in office till 2008. What is well displayed throughout Havana and the surrounding cities and countryside are the ultimate successes of Fidel Castro. In many parks, monuments, and statues, Castro is displayed. There is little question of the vastness of this leader's popularity. Once Fidel stepped down, his brother Raúl Castro stepped in. Raúl had been by his side throughout the revolution, and carried on his legacy. The traditions and statues of the country have remained the same for decades. Miguel Díaz-Canel, who had been Raúl's second-incommand, became President of the Republic of Cuba in 2018. A depth of understanding of Cuba's history and culture will require many visits and study. Ernest Hemingway once lived just outside Havana, from 1940 to 1960. We visited his home—a lively blend of American and Cuban culture. Having known of his famous book, The Old Man and the Sea (published in 1952), it deserved a careful look. Only recently, in the last few years, has there been the freedom to visit the home and grounds of this master. Gemma wished she had known of him through his writings first. But oddly enough, the story of Ernest Hemingway, the famous Nobel Prize–winning author, was actually introduced to her when she was a student of Social Work, "because of his suicide. An unfortunate lesson learned, considering his mental health," she recalls. "His beautiful, openly airy Cuban home presents a calm environment. The surrounding grounds on this day where temperatures were above 100 degrees were representative of accommodating architecture. The home promoted the most creative of circumstances for writing." Gemma's thirst and curiosity had been quenched. A trip to Cuba made the hypothetical a reality for Christian, a twenty-year-old college student—someone who had been participating in talks about "what if'' for many years. For her, the Cuban way of life was intriguing. Cuba has moved through a good number of revolutions—evolving through colonialism, communism and socialism. Christian learned about socialism by having cautious but casual conversations with tour guides, restaurant staffers and people sitting around in the cafés. College graduates talked about the value of serving the community.
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 56

Socialism is defined as a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates for exchange among all, regulated by the community as a whole. With the recent conflicts across the political spectrum, the talks about socialism as a political system had taken on "an idolized gloss" for Christian. "Many Americans think it's the solution to all the problems in the United States," she says. However, when she heard taxi drivers' tales of graduating at the top of their class with law degrees, only to be forced to practice for the government for two years, and then to have to drive a taxi to pay their rent—it provided her with a new perspective. "The idea that there is more money in tourism within the bignamed areas of the island than in their highly skilled trades— which they went to higher education for—was a needed wakeup call," recalls Christian, "one that reminded me that no one system is perfect, even one that is supposed to be regulated by those involved. It can still be crafted in opposition to the working class, as I saw. The more we discussed with workers around the hotels within the pristine tourism district, the more reality came to light.
The rationing of food was another interesting consequence of this governmental structure. A visit to a community near Havana was a lesson in governmental consensus. Food grown in the community through a neighborhood garden became a thriving business. The question of taxes, sharing and a community business is seen uniquely. The use of so many natural methods for growing these gardens speaks to the creative ingenuity of the people.
"Cuba made me face the realities of what we have begun to

"Being an initiated priestess of ten years and the mother of my son who has been initiated for five years, this trip we anticipated would allow us the opportunity to become intimately familiar with the way that our tradition was practiced in Cuba, the birthplace of our lineage in the Americas. "Upon our arrival on the island, I was reminded of how the tradition in Cuba is practiced in the open—without fear of repercussions—very different from the way that it is at home in the United States, and in particular in the Bible Belt of the South. Orisha worship exists as a part of everyone’s daily life here, and, through its syncretism with Catholicism, exists alongside the practice of Christianity in a way that is reflective of the very African ideology: that one need not have to choose between the many ways in which we can grow closer to the Creator. Having been raised Christian, and still striving daily to be Christ-like—without subscribing to some of the cultural practices and ideas that have made Christianity less of how I identify—the Cuban approach to spirituality was and is refreshing.

Sadiyah Adams

Digital/Graphic Designer @flourishdigitalmagazine @sadiyah_adams
this spring Spring is upon us, and it is time to turn over that new leaf—because nothing can hold you back from achieving what your heart desires. In our last issue I spoke of acknowledging our mental health. Now it’s all about moving forward, working smart and pushing yourself to do better. Each day will be a different mountain you need to climb. Therefore, it’s important to know what you can do to make the hike easier. Bring along a way to overcome all hurdles. Nothing comes easy, yet often we expect it to be. But the only way we can achieve anything is by enforcing a habit in our lifestyle. Do you have it in you? It takes dedication, discipline and self-love. It doesn’t cost a fortune or take a lot of time. I believe that anyone of any age or in any situation can make the simplest of changes. When you do, you can become whoever and whatever you want to be. Here is how you can elevate your daily life and mental health. Trust me: this works—but only if you want it to. It's all in the mind, remember? Speak to your mind and the heart will follow. talk about your feelings
Stretch that hand out & Ask for Help
It seems difficult to open up, but trust yourself and trust the loved one you choose to open up to. Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health, ready to deal with times when you feel troubled.
None of us are superhuman. We all sometimes get tired or overwhelmed by how we feel or when things don’t go to plan. If things are getting too much for you and you can’t cope, ask for help. Your family or friends may be able to offer practical help, a listening ear or just a shoulder to cry on. If that’s not an option, contact a local service: Find a professional psychologist or connect with someone to talk to on a mental healthcare line.
WORK IT OUT
Motivate yourself and set a goal that you need to achieve. A healthy body makes a healthy mind. Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem and can help you concentrate, sleep, and feel better. Exercise keeps the brain and your other vital organs healthy. Fill that tummy with all things yummy
Don’t binge on all the junk stuff—but don’t deprive yourself either. Discipline is key. Your brain needs a mix of nutrients in order to stay healthy and function well, just like the other organs in your body. A diet that’s good for your physical health is also good for your mental health. Drink sensibly (Tipsy is not the way)
A lot of people turn to alcohol when feeling low. We often drink alcohol to change our mood. Some people drink to deal with fear or loneliness—but the effect is only temporary and the aftermath never does anyone any good. Look for an alternative—an energy smoothie or just simple H2O. Be responsible for the path you choose, and bring about good changes in your daily life. Your inner circle does not define you. Keep In Touch
Yes! We all can be stubborn about not speaking to people first. Yet there’s truly nothing better than catching up with someone face to face. Since that’s not always possible, you can also give them a call, drop them a note, or chat to them online instead. Keep the lines of communication open: It’s good for you!

Everyone deserves a Kit-Kat, Take a Break!
A change of scene or a change of pace is good for your mental health. It could be a five-minute pause from cleaning your kitchen, or a half-hour lunch break at work. Grab a book, take a walk in nature or get away for a weekend to explore somewhere new. A few minutes can be enough to de-stress you. Give yourself some "me time" every day. Good at something? Do it!
What do you love doing? What activities can you lose yourself in? What did you love doing in the past? Enjoying yourself can help beat stress. Doing an activity you enjoy probably means you’re good at it, and achieving something boosts your self-esteem. Try something new if you have to. Nothing can stop you except yourself. Accept You for You
No one can be better at being you than you. We’re all different. It’s much healthier to accept that you’re unique than to wish you were more like someone else. Feeling good about yourself boosts your confidence to learn new skills, visit new places and make new friends. Good self-esteem helps you cope when life takes a difficult turn. Care for others
Caring for others is often an important part of keeping up relationships with people close to you. It can even bring you closer together. Taking care of yourself is as important as lending a hand to others. <

Then Jesus explained what the story meant (see Matthew 13:18–23): “When anyone hears the God’s-honest truth, and doesn’t take it in, it just sits on the surface. Evil comes along and plucks it right out of that person’s heart: This is the seed scattered on the road. "The seed that’s thrown in the gravel is the

This spectacular version (seen on the following page) is the most wellknown. In many letters to his brother Theo, Vincent often described wrestling with his faith and his art: “I keep my hand to the plow, and cut my furrow steadily,” he wrote. A Pearl of Wisdom: Inspiring Generations
a Paula G. Voice interview
My Conversation with Poet, Advocate, Liaison Wanesha Spencer She is one of a kind! Her first experience with civil engagement and tear gas was at the tender age of ten. She ministered as a middle-school student through her poetry and spoken word. She’s been called an “old soul” since childhood. She bridges the gap across intergenerational differences. She is an advocate for justice. She’s poised. She’s fierce. She’s beautiful. She is Wanesha Spencer. Here's our conversation. > FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 62
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 63
Wanesha: It was completely my norm. But, you know, over the years, I've realized this has afforded me the opportunity to bring some people together who typically wouldn't come together for different conversations. It has also allowed me to translate between generational groups. Sometimes there are things the younger generation may do that leaves the older generation scratching their heads, and vice versa. Whenever there is a generational gap, I can be the middle person. That in itself is a blessing. Paula G.: There is so much to share about you. You are an amazing poet and spoken word artist. Tell us a bit about that. But first of all, tell us the difference between a poet and a spoken word artist—if there's a difference. Wanesha: Sure. Everyone has their own meaning. So, this is mine! But typically, a spoken word is normally memorized, and you are literally performing. It’s your words, your own personal words that you've written, and you're performing it, you're not reading. It is more of a performance—like a monologue-type style versus poetry. Typically, if it's poetry, you're actually reading that. The delivery style is different. So therein lies the difference, according to me. Paula G.: How have you been able to utilize your gift over the years? Wanesha: Oh, yes, that's a great question. Poetry for me over the years—I can honestly say it has opened doors that I know for a fact would not have been available to me otherwise. One of the first things I did as a young poet growing up was to write personalized poems for those who lost loved ones in the community. When I was about fourteen—before I was able to officially get a job and work—my grandparents realized this was a gift. Whenever we lost someone at church, the church secretary would call and ask if I would write a poem of comfort for the grieving family. I remember the first time I did it and I was like, OK, this is different. I was accustomed to writing pieces for special occasions at church. So, when that happened there was a shift. I could look at the life of someone who I've never met and create a full poem as if I knew the person. Within a few months, my Saturdays as a middle-school student were spent going to funerals, giving words of comfort. It started happening so much, my grandparents were like, "OK, this could be something." We came up with a price that we felt was suitable for a fourteen-year-old. And that's literally how I made extra money when I was a kid. And so, from there, it led to other opportunities. One of my favorites, of course, was speaking before the King family in 2017. There was a ceremony to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the King Center. >
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 64
Wanesha, cont.: While there, I had the opportunity to speak before the King family. I met Dr. Bernice King and Dr. King's sister, Dr. Christine Farris. I shared the stage with Mr. Hank Stewart, poet laureate who is also one of my mentors. That was an amazing experience. I've participated in a few other events, such as The Hot Chocolate Affair, which is also sponsored by Hank Stewart and the Stewart Foundation, along with so many other groups. There's Tower of Poets, Destinations. There's another group in New York that I was a part of as well—True Voices New York. And Black on Black Rhyme—I've done some work with them. And Poetic Collage. So, it's been an incredible journey.
Wanesha: I will say this—one of my favorite quotes: "Every generation has a responsibility." I take great pride in saying that. I believe that we all have a charge. There's an old hymn that goes, "A charge to keep I have, a God to glorify." I believe that we all have a charge. We all have a responsibility. Every generation has one.
Paula G.: So, you've been able to use this gift of being able to connect the generations. You've been able to utilize your poetry and spoken word to encourage, honor, and inspire from a young age. You're just a phenomenal woman who's using her gifts and using her talents to indeed flourish. Is there anything else that you'd like to share with the audience before we let you go?
Wanesha: Thank you.
Paula G.: And you are taking your responsibilities so seriously. Thank you so much for the conversation. And we wish you all the best as you continue to inspire, you continue to encourage, and you continue to use your gifts and talents to flourish. Thank you, Wanesha. <

We are on the cusp of Spring, you know, the time when it’s out with all of the old stuff you’ve not used—or whatever doesn’t serve you and the family anymore—and in with the new. Even though spring cleaning is hard work, we find it somewhat exciting and rewarding. Excited at the possibilities of change, of creating a clean slate to bring in what works for us now, in this season. Why stop at the house, garage and closets? Let’s explore our lives as well—what doesn’t work for us anymore. Every day is a new day filled with infinite possibilities, and springtime is a beautiful time to begin anew. Coco Chanel says, “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” True, but maybe not necessary. We can take inventory of our time, begin to get to know ourselves as a human being, and not just as a mom. Don’t get me wrong—the word just does not have a negative connotation here; it’s simply an attempt to establish an identity. We, as moms, can also find our place amongst the rest of the humans in this world. Two of my favorite tools when I begin to evolve and start something new, is visualization—and monitoring my thoughts. One of the most powerful tools we can use as moms to activate a new beginning is to practice visualization. It’s not just about closing your eyes and daydreaming. It’s actively envisioning— being detailed and specific about what you’d like your life to be.
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 67
What does it look like, feel like, and taste like? What are your surroundings, who’s there, what are you wearing, and how’s the weather? Yes! Be that specific! Carve out a space each day to do this. It’s a treat for you. You can choose to be still and quiet, and be at one with your thoughts. Write it all down, or create a vision board filled with pictures that are aligned with what you want. Either way, plan for it, look forward to it, and your heart, belief and actions will soon follow. What we tell ourselves is quite powerful. What you say out loud—or what your inner voice says that no one else hears—affects you in a positive or negative way. So be conscious of your thoughts. If your own thought process no longer serves you, then out it goes with the rest the “stuff” you’ve cleaned out. There are many places we will go, many things to do and see—and you, mama, are born of limitless possibilities. Remember, motherhood isn’t an either/or. It’s finding innovative ways of doing both. This is only the beginning—whether your vision includes a change of career, travel, or love, or simply creating an less-hectic organized day, take time out to begin anew. Much love, peace and adventures to you!

BY JADE CHERELL STAFF WRITER, FLOURISH DIGITAL MAGAZINE
So, here we are, quarantining and socialdistancing for a year now. None of the 328 million people in this country could have foreseen it. Last year was tough; but now we’re on to bright new horizons! As I push myself to keep focusing on the bright side and on the silver lining of the 2020 wreckage, I realized that I’ve picked up quite a few new hobbies. This alone is so exciting to me—being a Gemini and jack of all trades and all. Out of the stillness of quarantine I found my creative side again. I’ve begun a few amazing art projects and started writing again. There has been time to remember my ten-year-old self sitting in my front lawn with a journal, proclaiming that I was now a writer. One of my favorite discoveries has been Mod Podge. I can actually photocopy, laser print, and transfer images onto wood, fabric, acrylic, and most other materials. I have always wanted to create beautiful colorful things and now I'm finding that I actually can create and give it a shot! I’m also learning how to play chess with my boyfriend and quarantine companion/survivor. He is an avid chess player and it was something that I haven't played since third grade after-school chess club! Springing forward, I’m remembering and cherishing what I've gained during the past twelve months. Yes, this has been a scary time, but we’ve made it thus far. We can all continue to make it. And even add arts and crafts, writing, woodworking, or any hobby that you’ve been itching to give a try. I mean, why not? We’ve certainly all got the time to sit back and think about what would really bring us joy today. And for me, it's been coloring and trying new artistic mediums. Springing forward, I’m springing into things I’ve always wanted to do, no matter how grandiose or humble. <

SHE IS YVONNE MCCORMICK BEFORE YOU SHINE IN THE LIGHT,
YOU MUST GLOW IN THE DARK.
An ExV Agency conversation with Zuri Design Company owner, Yvonne McCormick EXV: Yvonne, you are a creative designer with a very international background—from North Pole, Alaska to Germany and beyond. What has it been like, hunkering down during the pandemic, and how have you managed to stay creative during such a challenging time? YVONNE: Design is the recognition and response to the world and the creativity within and around me. The impact of the pandemic and the restrictions on in-person interactions challenged me to adapt to everyone's expressions. There were dark times during this pandemic, not only with the lives lost but also the political and racial unrest of 2020. At times, I found it challenging to tap into my imagination and creativity. All of my designs started to take on a sharp, hard-edged tone like the world around me. Even though I couldn't travel or experience the world as before, I reflected on the world in my creative work. >
by Karen Gamba and Frank Carlisi FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 69
AT A FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL, EVERY HUMAN ON THIS PLANET DESIRES TO CREATE A GOOD
CONNECTION WITH OTHERS AT SOME POINT.
YVONNE, CONTINUED: Being creative and positive remained challenging, but I worked hard to keep a healthy routine. I created new designs almost every day. I gained a deeper understanding of creative thinking while adjusting, and watching others adapt their lives and express themselves in new ways. I focused on the human experience and listened to how people felt, and tried to capture the art in it all. Being able to communicate in a visually appealing manner— and have others emotionally experience my art or design, even thru a pandemic—is the ultimate achievement. EXV: How has your international background influenced the way you deal with clients from different backgrounds and cultures? YVONNE: Growing up as a Black American woman from Alaska, who lived and worked worldwide, I benefit from having an entire life of shared cultural experiences. Whether I'm working with clients or other creatives, I understand that every part of a design is an expression of our identity and life experiences.
I am a curious person by nature, and I think it is my go-to when I am faced with a difference, since it allows for a natural engagement. I try to connect openly and fluidly with clients from a curious position— ask questions, listen carefully and find shared concepts or inspirations to build on during a project.
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 70
At a fundamental level, every human on this planet desires to create a good connection with others at some point. I try to tap into this collective desire when helping clients reach their customers—while also understanding that inherently, because of our differences, we may have a varied perspective at times. Design helps us understand who we are by translating our views into a visible or tangible outward expression of shared humanity. That is all design is. In a sense, we are designing our lives every single day. Understanding that every human is creative allows me to observe and respect others while also learning who I am in that observation. EXV: You recently moved from Colorado to North Carolina. What advice do you have for other business owners looking to make similar big changes while running a business and managing their families and other obligations? YVONNE: Creativity requires both physical strength and mental focus, and you only have so much available each day that you can apply to run a business.
When life changes occurred and took up more of my attention, there was less mental space and far less creative quiet time. Still, I stayed on a personal routine that would allow me to focus. I practiced meditation at 5:00 AM on most days, and decided to let go of things I couldn't control. >
YVONNE CONTINUED: I recommend a similar routine for any business owner to help manage stress and prevent burnout. Know when to stop and start working each day, but don't be confined to one way of doing things. Set a routine and establish a business process and then go with the flow. Adjust when needed.
My corporate background helped me understand the value of formal business processes instead of thinking about every step or business action each day. Spending time up front to set up a business routine can save time and energy on administrative work or solve preventable business problems. EXV: Spring is in the air—a time for new beginnings for everyone. Do you have any springtime resolutions or rituals to share that might help us take on the new season with positivity and grace? YVONNE: Choose what makes your heart bloom. Write down what makes you happy, and then do those things. Seeing something written has a specific power to it.
Ask yourself, "Who am I now?" and “Who do I want to be?” and go be that. I've learned that when you take action on a plan, the world around you has no choice but to bend to your reality. Lastly, remember to be OK with only taking on opportunities that feel good in your soul and reflect your values.
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 71
EXV: Do you have anything exciting coming up for Zuri Design Company this year that you'd like to share? YVONNE: I'm looking forward to selecting a company for the 2021 Beautiful Brand Award. The award is an annual campaign where Zuri honors one company with a new and free brand identity or brand identity refresh—as a way of giving back to those who give so much. We do this so that these beautiful brands can focus on their unique products or services that better our world.
Our 2020 Winner, Melanin Library, is off to a great start this year with a new brand identity to complement its mission and vision of creating and promoting books by Black authors that feature Black and Brown main characters. EXV: Any words of wisdom to share with other creatives out there struggling during the pandemic? YVONNE: Practice gratitude. There is beauty in every experience, even the difficult ones. Someone once said to me that you're never in the wrong place; you're always in the right place looking at things the wrong way.
Take care of yourself first. Know that selfcare can be an uncomfortable thing if you're not used to it, but it's worth it. Be kind to yourself. Understand that you are not required to develop the next great business idea or some life-altering concept while surviving a pandemic. Practice being still. For some creatives, not thinking and not doing so much all the time is precisely what is needed. Know that this is temporary. Understand that sometimes before you shine in the light, you must glow in the dark. <

Interviewed by Karen Gamba & Frank Carlisi Co-Founders of the ExV Agency www.exv-agency.com | @exv-agency FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 75
It’s Spring! This is a great time to do some Spring cleaning, especially with your finances. Organizing guru Marie Kondo advises us to keep those things that “speak to the heart” and discard items that “no longer spark joy.” De-cluttering your finances will be hard and complicated at times, but the ultimate goal is having enough money to do the things that bring you joy—like taking care of your family, buying the house of your dreams, sending your children to the college of their dreams, or going on your family’s dream vacation.
GET INFORMED Many people don’t review their pay stubs, bank statements, retirement and pension statements, or other investment statements. They also don’t look at their mortgage, student loan, or credit card statements. In fact, most people do the minimum necessary to pay their bills and file their taxes.
FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 76
The first step is to review your pay stubs to understand how much money you’re making and how much money is being taken out for employee benefits and taxes. Check with the company’s human resources department to make sure you’re taking full advantage of employee benefits for insurance and retirement. And, consider whether you’re claiming the right number of dependents. You should next review your bank statements. This will give you a clearer picture of what money is regularly coming into your household and what money is regularly going out of your household. Is more going out each month than is coming in? Are you spending every dollar you make, and then some? Next, you should closely examine your retirement and other investment account statements. These accounts represent your investment assets. Do you know what you’re invested in and why? If you don’t understand something, contact your human resources department or your financial professional for answers. >
The final step is to know what you owe. Go through your mortgage, student loan, car loan, and credit card statements. What interest rate are you paying, what is your outstanding balance, what is the due date, and what is your minimum payment? If there is anything you don’t understand, call the lender to have their representative explain it.
ELiMiNATE THE UNNECESSARY Now that you know and understand your current financial situation, look for ways to eliminate the unnecessary. For example, when reviewing your bank and credit card statements, did you identify any streaming, music, or gaming subscription services that you don’t use or you don’t need? It may seem like a small amount, but over a year, a $10 monthly charge adds up to $120. And if you can cancel more than one service, it could add up to hundreds of dollars saved over a year. Late fees and overdraft charges are the next unnecessary things to eliminate. Pay attention to the due dates on your debts. Set up autopay or schedule alarms on your phone so you’re never late again. Check your bank account regularly online or through a mobile app so you don’t end up owing expensive overdraft charges. You should also work on eliminating unnecessary credit card debt. Start with the credit card with the lowest balance, even if it has a higher interest rate. Pay double or triple the minimum amount until the debt is gone. Then, work on the credit card with the next lowest balance until it’s down to zero, and so on with the rest. I don’t recommend closing credit card accounts because this may adversely affect your credit score. But, once a debt has been paid in full, put the card away and don’t use it again unless you can pay the new debt off in full within 30 days.
The last things to consider eliminating are bad financial habits. My weaknesses are expensive lattes and online shopping. While I still treat myself every now and then, not giving into the temptation every week has brought great joy to my bank account. What bad habits can you eliminate that will add up to more money in the bank over the long term?
MAKE A PLAN You now know your income, employee benefits, investment assets, expenses, and debts. Develop a routine to check these items on a regular basis. You’ve also taken steps to eliminate unnecessary fees and charges, credit card debts, and bad financial habits. With this knowledge and freed up money, put together a savings and spending plan, or what some people call a budget, and stick to it. There are several mobile apps to help you do this easily. A portion of your savings should first go to build an emergency fund, which should contain 3 to 6 months of your income. An emergency fund is solely for unexpected expenses like when the refrigerator breaks down or you need new tires for your car. The remainder of your regular savings should go towards building wealth for financial security and doing those things that bring you joy. Consider working with a financial professional to help you make informed decisions based on your particular financial situation and goals. Money is a means to an end, not the end itself. <

PERSONAS
A WAY TO CREATE & LIVE A BIGGER, MORE JOYFUL LIFE by Chloé Taylor Brown
A persona is not your real inner Self. Most personas are created by default—and people think that's them. Why? Because we're not taught or trained to create and design our own life. A persona can help us be more intentional. It is a person's social, business or public façade, front or identity. A persona reflects the role(s) we play in life or those we're getting ready to play. When you're ready to elevate and level up, make a decision about what you really want to accomplish; then determine what you need to take away from or to add to your current personality, image, verbal and nonverbal language, and the characteristics you need to project publicly to help you accomplish your goals. Think of Sasha Fierce. She helps Beyoncé accomplish her goals as an entertainer on stage; and together, they win. >

Flowers are a gift to this earth. As Gerard De Nerval once said, “Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature.” They paint contrasting colors along the ground and bring joy to many. Their elegance and delicate touches have us all in awe and exhilaration. This is often why flowers are seen as loving gifts for the special people in our lives, and the reaction of the person receiving the flowers is priceless.

My husband and I were married in 1994. Describing life as simply having its “ups and downs” since then doesn’t even cut it. Yet despite our many challenges, somehow we always find a way to survive and thrive—together. Guess what: We keep listening, learning, adjusting, improving—and it gets easier. And then it doesn’t. Again. Does that mean give up? Never. Case in point: When we’d been married about ten years, I thought my husband was having an affair. I’d come across some love letters written to him from his assistant. They were months old, so if something had happened, it was probably over. He and I had gone through a difficult time a year before. But after counseling, prayer, and hard work, our marriage was much stronger.
Article
The possibility of infidelity still worried me, but for three months I said nothing, because it would have been hypocritical. I’d almost had an affair myself. I recalled Jesus’ words, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” This was Jesus’ answer when Jewish elders surrounded an adulteress and asked that he condemn her to death by stoning. After he spoke, they drifted away, ashamed. Jesus asked: “‘Woman, where are your accusers? Has no man condemned you?’ She answered, ‘No man, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘I don’t condemn you, either: Go, and sin no more’” (see John 8:3–11).

I prayed about this on my walks around a pond near where I worked at the time. While strolling past the resident ducks and Canada geese, I asked God—that is, Love itself—to show me the way. Prayer for me is listening and learning to reflect Love, the true nature of each of us. Mary Baker Eddy, 19th-century spiritual pioneer, wrote in her seminal work, Science and Health: “Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil. Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you.” Following a brief separation, our daughter (who was five years old at the time) had innocently mentioned that she wished my husband’s assistant were her stepmom. My heart sank. I again feared the breakup of our family. Yet soon I realized that I had been this woman; I had behaved the same way. Her gushing letters were shameful. I, too, in my past infatuation for another man, had made an enormous fool of myself. If I could be forgiven, so could she. Not knowing whether she was still in love with my husband, I developed compassion for her. I also became aware that I was jealous of all the time she was spending with him at work. But as I prayed about this, I discovered that the word jealousy can also mean vigilance, so I decided to replace any envy I had with attentiveness to my husband and daughter. I doubled my efforts to guard our family’s sanctity. Whenever I thought of this woman, I blessed her, trusting she would do the right thing.
My husband and I had already overcome so much. I wasn’t about to give up now. I treasured this passage from the chapter “Marriage” in Science and Health: “The good in human affections must have ascendency over the evil and the spiritual over the animal, or happiness will never be won.” I persevered, awaiting further divine guidance. The next answer came—from a goose. In early March while on my walk, a goose came flying toward my head. You can’t imagine the imposing wingspan of this creature coming straight at me! I ducked behind a tree, assuring him I would retreat. I saw his mate nesting nearby. He was only trying to protect his family.
I saw his mate nesting nearby. He was only trying to protect his family.

Days passed, many geese were nesting, the males aggressively defending their posts. I eventually became fearless in the face of the frequent hissing and runs at my head. When I showed respect, they’d let me pass. The more I expressed honor and appreciation for the vigilance of the geese, the less fear and resentment I felt toward the woman. On the first day of Spring—one year to the day after my husband and I had briefly separated, at the time seeing no way out but divorce—we awoke at a campsite with our daughter. Sunshine streamed through the California redwoods, and the promise of a new beginning filled my heart with inexpressible joy. The night before, in front of a crackling campfire, we’d finally talked about the affairs that almost were. (In both, the males had remained steadfast to their mates.) We’d burned the letters and toasted marshmallows to our renewed love, and to our family united. Back at the pond a few weeks later, I saw three new families of geese. The parents strutted as they led their children along the path. “Yes, I agree,” I answered. “You should be very proud!” I knew just how they felt. After another year, my husband’s assistant got married. Love always cares for each of us! Since then, our marriage has deepened even more—yet we still have plenty of problems to handle, especially in the face of the covid-19 shutdown. Our daughter had to leave her college study abroad program early and has graduated from college remotely, quarantined at home with us for a whole year. My husband, an entertainment professional, has been mostly without work. We’ve endured the illness of his mom and the passing of my dad. We wonder when we’ll get our empty nest back—and then what? Through it all, our abiding faith in the power of Love remains vigilant. FLOURISHDIGITALMAGAZINE.COM | SPRING 2021 | 95
