To Our Members In 2019, the Seniors In Motion (SIM) program celebrated its 14th anniversary and fifth year in the Flower Mound Senior Center. We have come a long way from a few members meeting in one little room in a community church. Today, we have over 2,300 members and have over 1,100 visits per week. This year, the staff focused on adding more variety to the programs offered at the Flower Mound Senior Center. We have increased the number of fitness and dance classes from 22 per week to over 30! In addition, we added creative art and education classes in technology, painting, health, and wellness. The popularity of OLLI at UNT led us to doubling the number of classes offered each semester. We can tell our members are pleased with these additions because we are busier than ever! In the 2019 survey, 82 percent of our members reported being satisfied or extremely satisfied with the overall program. Members were asked what they like best, and they stated the friendly and helpful staff, beautiful building, their fellow members, and the quality and variety of programs. What makes our program special is our members, though. I love meeting all the new members we have gained and visiting with the members who have been with us from the start. Joining Seniors In Motion is more than just becoming part of a senior center, it is becoming a part of the SIM family. We laugh together, cry together, share struggles, and create memories. I look forward to spending the new decade with you!

Mission Statement: The Flower Mound Senior Center dignifies seniors with a safe and caring environment, creative and inclusive programs, and thoughtful resources that promote health, wellbeing, fellowship, and involvement.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors Metroport Meals On Wheels, Inc. (MMOW) is a grassroots, volunteer organization advocating for the elderly and those in need through home-delivered meals, and other support services. MMOW is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” to alleviate hunger, isolation, and loneliness in communities, and to foster the independence, worth and dignity of each individual they serve.

The Flower Mound Senior Center partners with the MMOW to provide high-quality, low-cost meals to SIM members each Tuesday and Thursday. The Senior Center orders and purchases the meals from MMOW for $5.85 per meal. MMOW negotiates with local restaurants to purchase meals at a reduced price. The meals are then delivered and served by MMOW staff and volunteers. SIM members are charged $4 per meal, with the Town of Flower Mound supplementing the remaining cost. Each meal consists of a protein and two vegetables or sides. The Senior Center provides plates and utensils, beverages, and desserts. The Senior Center and MMOW served 8,416 meals in Fiscal Year 2018—2019. This was an increase of 100 meals served from the previous fiscal year. During 2019, Senior Center staff implemented a new registration process for members where they could purchase meals in advance. This reduced the Town’s cost of providing meals while increasing the number of meals served.

What members like best about the Seniors In Motion program:

Comments from our members: “We have the best Senior Center in Town!” “All are GREAT!! Keep up the good work!” “Nothing needs improvement. We have the best Senior Center around!” “I think you are doing a great job!” “It’s perfect!”

Richard DeSimone and his wife Nancy both retired in 2010 with intentions to live out their lives traveling and enjoying each other’s company. They took several trips together to destinations such as China, river cruises in France, and a two week fall New England tour. It was an MRI at U.T. Southwestern Medical Center that revealed that Nancy had a brain tumor, of which she would eventually succumb to in July 2018. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 17, 2019. Richard describes himself after Nancy’s passing as “being in a dark place.” His life had been devoted to sharing his life with Nancy, and he struggled without her. A neighbor suggested that he come to the Flower Mound Senior Center for the numerous activities it provided. Richard soon joined the center and discovered several activities that appealed to him and sparked new interests. Some of the activities include the SIM Poetry Society, Ted Talk and Goalcast discussions, the weekly luncheons, dinner and movie nights, and the variety of trips the center organizes and provides transportation for its members. Richard soon found new hope in his life through the socialization and stimulation the center provided. He also met his girlfriend Mary Ann, who has brought love and companionship into his life again. Richard said, “Without a doubt, the Flower Mound Senior Center saved my life, and I hate to think what would have become of my life without it.” He said he sees many other seniors with similar circumstances and how the center has helped them. In addition to the opportunities the center provides, he says the relationships cultivated by the staff at the center make it so successful. “The people are so caring and kind, and that meant so much to me when I needed it, and it continues to be the reason for the center’s success for me and others.”

“Without a doubt, the Flower

Mound Senior Center saved my life...” RICHARD DESIMONE
