BROOKS DESIGNING SAFE SHOES FOR ALL RUNNERS’ WANTS AND NEEDS Long considered the best-fitting, safest, and most innovative shoes in the running arena, Brooks has led with functional innovations that most running shoe manufacturers have for years incorporated into their own lines, namely, EVA midsoles, stability components in midsoles, reflectivity for night visibility, removable insoles, the heel-snugging top eyelet, dual density and podded outsoles for better heel wear and a softer and more flexible forefoot, and directional lugs for better outsole traction and a smoother toe-off, to name a few. Note that Brooks’ research developed most of these in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and to this day remain standards in the industry. Today, Brooks continues to outpace all other manufacturers with the most highly researched materials and biomechanically correct, adaptive, comfortable and safe running shoes on the market - as close to a custom shoe a runner can get. Below are more recent exclusive advances that help Brooks remain the #1 choice for runners with “A Perfect Ride for Every Stride”. A brief description of each model follows in the last paragraph. Which do you prefer? Brooks’ cushioned and most shock-absorbing midsoles, namely, BioMoGo DNA, are the only biodegradable midsoles on the market. They also last longer and provide custom cushioning that adjusts to the weight of every runner, with each step. This adaptable cushioning absorbs the appropriate amount of shock based on the amount of landing force of the individual. The proper amount of shock absorption helps eliminate pain and lessens the chance of injury by delaying fatigue and reducing stress and strain on joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. For runners desiring to enhance their speed and performance and get a higher return on their energy expenditure, Brooks’ DNA AMP midsoles will fit the bill. DNA AMP midsoles are made from highly resilient polyurethane with an exterior skin to capture impact energy, and then strongly release it as the runner toes-off, resulting in the most energy return of leading performance running shoes. DNA AMP has an inherently firmer feel, necessary for a quick on-and-off-theground, fast run. Brooks’ GuideRails Holistic Support System is based on the most recent biomechanical research that natural overpronation or oversupination is desirable for some runners based on their knee orientation. If the ankle is turning in and the knee-cap is aligned with the foot, the ankle is doing its job. The same if the ankle is turned out. The position of the knee, not the ankle, is the most important part of the shoe-fitting process, as it is a most vulnerable joint and most injuryprone area of the runner’s body. To track properly, the knee-cap should be centered directly over the foot. The ankle is known as a “mobile adapter”. Its purpose is to make sure the knee and the rest of the body is aligned, regardless of its own position. Brooks’ recently updated GuideRails Holistic Support System allows the ankle to do just that – move just enough to align the knee, but also be there to comfortably keep excess movement in check. Being naturally and properly aligned not only saves energy but reduces numerous pain and injury causing compensations. With Flex-and-Roll forefoot technology, Brooks is the only brand purposefully providing universal forefoot flexibility to adapt to every arch length. Allowing the foot to flex how it is designed, maintains alignment at toe-off and greatly reduces excess pain and injury-related movements. Below are very brief descriptions of each Brooks shoe based on common runner preferences including cushion, energize, or speed choices. Which do you prefer?

Normalcy is key!! During this crazy time of Covid, I have found that normalcy is key. The more routine things I can do, the better my spirit. I try my best to be consistent and align my actions with my values and goals. When I do this I feel my best. So what do you value? What are your goals? And how can you hold yourself accountable so your actions are in alignment with your values and goals on a daily basis? Here are just some of the things I value and how I keep my actions in alignment with my values and goals. I love spending time with my family so regularly I plan family meals. family game nights, watching sports on TV together, and plan visits with my family out of town on a regular basis. I strive to be a strong triathlete. When races are canceled, I look to my team mates to keep me motivated and accountable and truly enjoy our group workouts. I must say I have even more fun than ever without the pressure of racing and I still benefit from being healthy as a result of training with this amazing team of individuals. I value being social and with less social outings taking place, I align my friends with my training outdoors so I can still be social safely outdoors and exercise at the same time. Not all my friends value exercise like I do so in an effort to be social with them, I face time them and I plan zooms so I can still be engaged and connect with them. I strive to maintain a healthy body weight. No excuses. I continue to eat my normal healthy diet and feel strong and healthy. I allow no excuses to stray from fueling my body well so i will continue to feel my best and perform my best. I love managing the gym, teaching classes, and coaching my students so I continue my schedule whether there are two students in attendance or 20 and give each one my best effort to provide a safe, enriching, fun workout each time. So what do you value? What are your goals? And what daily actions can you take so your actions are in alignment with your values and goals on a daily basis?

Swimming in Cold Water
In Florida we are used to swim in warm temperatures and avoid at all cost the lower water temperatures, but through the years we’ve been learning that swimming in cold water has it benefits, when you swim in cold water you feel invigorated and there is a reason for it, cold water activates endorphins. This chemical is what the brain produces to make us feel good during activities. As the temperature drops, just keep swimming and your body will get used to the cold. This time of year is the perfect time to start cold water swimming, Besides feeling invigorated, when you swim in cold water, your metabolism increases, your burn calories, you sleep better and for some reason you smile and keep smiling, In Florida the water doesn’t get super cold, the chances of you suffering hypothermia are lower than the northern states, signs of hypothermia are: Shivering Cold, pale skin, Blue lips, Confusion, Fast breathing, Slurred speech, your mind spaces out, disoriented. After swimming in cold water temperatures, make sure you are slowly back to bringing your body temp to normal, don’t have a hot shower. Hot water can cool your core and it can be dangerous. Instead, make sure you have plenty of warm clothes, wrap up well and have a hot drink. The most important thing is never swim alone and if you are attempting to swim in cold water, make sure you go with a group or a friend. Baby steps, acclimate, and like I always say “don’t get distracted” •

INVEST IN YOUR SAFETY, TO PREVENT OR PROVE FAULT Unfortunately, I have several recent bicycle/car crash cases, and I want all of you to understand what you can do to help lessen the chance of being a victim, as well as how to best protect you and enhance the prove ability of your claim if injured. The good news is this is easy to do; the bad, but worth it news is it will cost you a few hundred bucks. What am I talking about? Simple: have strobe lights and video cameras facing both front and rear on your bike, and have them on ANY TIME you are riding, day or night. There are a variety of products on the market; I’m not trying to sell any one. In fact, in my case, I use two different ones: I have a garmin video with a separate small but powerful strobe on my bars; and a cyclic 6 facing rear under my seat, with strobe and camera in the same unit. It doesn’t matter which products you have; but it is imperative you have and use them always. One recent example: my cyclist was riding straight in the outside lane, where he is legally required to be; woke up in hospital with no idea what happened. But his rear camera, with great sound, captured the whole thing: driver approached fast, never hit brakes until less than a second from impact. No apparent eye witnesses. The driver’s first words to my still unconscious client were “dude, you pulled right in front of me!” If not for the camera, and sound that captured the driver’s words, the fault looks like it’s the cyclists. However, the video footage clearly shows the cyclist doing everything right, the motorist everything wrong. To compound the driver’s negligence, he had no insurance, which is why I always plead with you to carry high uninsured motorist’s’ limits, which act as liability coverage for the negligent driver. YOU CANNOT AFFORD NOT TO HAVE LIGHTS AND CAMERAS!
