RELIEVING FOOT-PAIN DUE TO ILL-FITTING SHOES If you begin experiencing foot pain that has been persistent for a week or more and/or notice a change in the shape of at least one of your feet, talk to someone who has experience in dealing with similar issues. Many times a minor complaint is just a simple fix, like a size, stability level, foot support or shoe brand change recommended by your local running or comfort shoe store. Once identified, hopefully sooner than later, and before surgery is even a consideration, there are products available that can help reduce the severity of pain and even minor foot deformities. They may be just enough to keep you going with minimal discomfort. Remember, the earlier you act on any unusual pain or structural issue the easier and less expensive it will be to treat, and potentially save you a lifetime of pain and embarrassment. Specifically caused by tight shoes and occurring over a period of time, the following foot issues could have been prevented, and can be alleviated to an extent by wearing properly-fitted footwear. Otherwise, below are some fairly inexpensive aids to help with deformity-related foot issues and pain. Bunions, commonly caused by very tight shoes, severely squeezing the toes together and resulting in a large, dislocated bump on the inside ball of the foot with the big toe angled toward the rest of the toes, eventually causing one or more to slide sideways and overlap. A Bunion Guard and Toe-Spacers can provide proper separation for better foot function. The same type of protrusion can also occur on the outside of the foot at the little toe, called a Tailor’s Bunion or Bunionette. Hammer-toes are caused by very small shoes pushing back on the longest toes, cramping and forcing them back and down, like a hammer. Toe-straighteners can help reposition them into a straighter position. Corns are painful bony protuberances occurring either between the toes and/or on top of the toes. Caused by excess pressure and rubbing, a doughnut-shaped corn pad can provide pressure relief. A Neuroma is very painful forefoot pain and caused by squeezing the foot together typically by shoes that are extremely narrow in the forefoot, irritating the nerve sheath, usually between the third and fourth metatarsals. Wider shoes and a metatarsal pad help to separate the metatarsals and take pressure off the nerve to relieve pain. Properly treated, a neuroma can heal if caught early enough. Blisters and Calluses are usually more short term and are caused by excess shearing and pressure from shoes not properly fitting the shape of the foot. A product called Second Skin helps to pad and heal blisters. For Calluses, various pads designed for specific areas of the foot or a generously padded sock work nicely to reduce them. Ingrown Toe Nails are also associated with excess pressure on the side of the big toe, forcing the nail to grow into the skin. A wider shoe in the toe box normally eliminates this short-term condition. If a problem persists or continues to get worse, a visit to a podiatrist who specializes in all foot and ankle conditions or an orthopedic surgeon who treats injuries to the musculo-skeletal system through surgery may help identify and correct an issue. A physical therapist works to improve movement and manage pain through muscle stretching and strengthening, or a massage therapist who works on muscle relaxation and treats soft-tissue related pain and movement by manipulating muscles, can also have excellent outcomes. Swimming in Cold Water
In Florida we are used to swim in warm temperatures and avoid at all cost the lower water temperatures, but through the years we’ve been learning that swimming in cold water has it benefits, when you swim in cold water you feel invigorated and there is a reason for it, cold water activates endorphins. This chemical is what the brain produces to make us feel good during activities. As the temperature drops, just keep swimming and your body will get used to the cold. This time of year is the perfect time to start cold water swimming, Besides feeling invigorated, when you swim in cold water, your metabolism increases, your burn calories, you sleep better and for some reason you smile and keep smiling, In Florida the water doesn’t get super cold, the chances of you suffering hypothermia are lower than the northern states, signs of hypothermia are: Shivering Cold, pale skin, Blue lips, Confusion, Fast breathing, Slurred speech, your mind spaces out, disoriented. After swimming in cold water temperatures, make sure you are slowly back to bringing your body temp to normal, don’t have a hot shower. Hot water can cool your core and it can be dangerous. Instead, make sure you have plenty of warm clothes, wrap up well and have a hot drink. The most important thing is never swim alone and if you are attempting to swim in cold water, make sure you go with a group or a friend. Baby steps, acclimate, and like I always say “don’t get distracted” •

tbi: the bane of the cyclist Traumatic brain injury is a common injury for a cyclist struck by a motor vehicle. It is an invisible injury, and requires special MRI’s and doctors who are proficient in dealing with this injury. There are some myths held, even by doctors who don’t regularly deal with such injuries, as well as symptoms you need to be aware of. First the myths: A cat scan at the ER will not diagnose TBI; it’s purpose is to rule out a brain bleed immediately after a head injury. LOC (loss of consciousness) does NOT have to be documented in order to have a TBI. A Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a test often done by ambulance or EMS personnel, should not be used on its own to predict the outcome of a brain injury, or even if one has occurred. It is NOT reliable in demonstrating the presence of brain injury by itself. Here are symptoms after a crash where your head, even in a great helmet, has had contact with another object, or the ground: Fogginess, or the sense you are under water; fuzziness in thought; fits of anger for no reason; loss of sense of taste and/or smell; abnormal forgetfullness; dizziness or vomiting; vision issues including inability to focus; difficulty sleeping. These are just some of the symptoms. The bottom line is after a crash, if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, get to an attorney who specializes in brain injury cases, and who can refer you to a Doctor who has actual experience in treating these injuries. I’ve had the privilege to represent many cyclists with such injuries, and I can tell you every case is unique. Keep all gear you had at the time of the crash, especially your helmet, which will often demonstrate micro fracturing from the blow. Save any video you hopefully have from your bike cameras; they can provide crucial evidence to prove your claim. I hope you never need this information, but better to know what to do if needed. Stay safe out there. See you on the road.

Who is a Candidate For Regenerative Medicine? A Non-Surgical Approach to Healing Naturally
Are you tired of experiencing the aches and pains that come with being an avid runner? Well look no further, Regenerative Medicine is your answer! What is Regenerative Medicine? Regenerative Medicine is a form of tissue engineering and molecular biology, which deals with the process of replacing, engineering or regenerating human cells, tissues or organs to restore or establish normal function. This is most commonly done through the use of Mesenchymal Stem Cells.
lkllklklklklkllkjgjgjgjhghjghjghjghjggjhhg
Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) are multipotent, undifferentiated cells that can self-renew, regenerate mesenchymal tissues and blood cells, and differentiate into several cell types.
Why Mesenchymal Stem Cells?
•
There are many advantages of using mesenchymal stem cells as a treatment method. For one, they have the ability to transform into almost any type of musculoskeletal tissue, such as bone, cartilage, ligament, and tendon. The procedure itself is minimally invasive and very low-risk in comparison to other procedures or surgeries. There is little to no down-time after the procedure and most patients are able to resume normal activity and exercise within one to two weeks.
If you have experienced any of the following, you could be a candidate for Regenerative Medicine Joint Pain
•
Osteoarthritis
•
Sports Injuries
•
•
Individuals recommended for certain surgical procedures Chronic aches and pains
