Let Us Help You Get Your Training Back On Track. Enhanced Performance Now Offers Kinesio Taping. Kinesio Taping (KT) can assist with increasing range-of-motion by providing continual myofascial stretching. It also helps to: • stabilize a weakened or loose joint • either inhibit or facilitate muscle movement • with fluid and edema management in tissues KT is becoming an essential tool for Massage Therapists worldwide. Rooted in the science of Kinesiology, KT activates neurological, circulatory, and lymphatic networks to relieve pain and swelling and restore normal musculoskeletal function. Karen Stromberg, LMT, is one of the first Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioners in the Tampa Bay area. "I came to Karen Stromberg with a running injury that just wouldn't heal. As any runner knows, an interruption in training can be a major set-back. Thank goodness I turned to Karen for help. In a single therapy session, she was able to not only alleviate the pain, it was as if the injury never occurred." —Karen Collins, Licensed Massage Therapist

Swim Like A Swimmer I have seen the pattern within the last decade of triathletes doing the majority of their swim training in open water. They are under the impression the race is in open water so that’s where they should be training. But the truth is to become a better swimmer you must train like a swimmer. Olympic Open Water swimmers do the majority of their training in group situations in a pool setting, with a coach directing them to work on form and tempo. Swimming is the only of the three disciplines that relies almost completely on proper technique. In the water, the objective is to generate propulsion while reducing drag. There are multiple aspects in play at the same time so it is close to impossible to self-teach or self-coach proper technique. Having a professional coach watching over, analyzing and correcting your stroke is the key to faster times. Michael Phelps won more Olympic gold medals than anyone else, and he still relied on his swim coach. So where do you start? In the pool! If the majority of your swims are in open water, you are training where no one can see what you are doing, right or wrong, possibly reinforcing bad habits which directly affect speed and efficiency. Training in a pool with a coach that provides feedback and corrections is critical to achieve efficiency and strength. One on one coaching is of course the fastest way to improve swimming technique, but training with a local masters swim program with a certified coach can is an economical alternative. This group setting affords you the opportunity to swim and compete with other swimmers. Properly organized swim workouts include a warm-up, technique drills, speed/distance work and a cool down. You should find a local masters swim program that fits your schedule, with an active coach that makes corrections as well as provides the motivation to make the workouts fun. Should you ditch open water swimming all together? Absolutely not! There are skills that are only learned and perfected in open water. Drafting, sighting, swimming in crowds, swimming in rough water, dolphin diving, wetsuit swimming and others are only achieved properly in open water. But without basic swimming skills these open water techniques are harder and less effective. A great way to perfect these skills are clinics and specific training. (Be looking for the P6 Open Water Series again this summer) To dispel another myth – While the swim is the shortest portion of a triathlon it does need the attention the other disciplines need. A confident and well-trained swimming triathlete has many definite advantages. The most obvious is the overall aerobic fitness level. Swimming helps increase oxygen intake which transfers over to the bike and run. A proficient swimmer uses much less energy, which will carry over to the bike in a race. After proper training, anxiety levels will reduce, wasting less energy at the beginning of the race. And lastly, swimming can be fun! Masters swimming is a great opportunity to train with others whereby you can encourage each other on a regular basis to improve. So get out and Swim Like A Swimmer! No Regrets – Personally, I NEVER regret doing a workout but I do regret skipping a workout. It's so much more challenging to do an intense workout like speed work SOLO. Maybe
misery loves company but I find the effort of our teammates working hard during a workout brings out the best in us. Just like in races our competitors bring out the best in us. This is why we race. If you do a workout solo and find you are not as strong please do not jump to the conclusion that you have digressed because you could not do the workout as planned. I can almost guarantee this does not mean you have lost fitness. Accept the fact that you benefit from the external push your teammates provide & that is normal :0) No regrets. I find that when I skip a workout I tend to regret skipping it. At 4:30AM when my alarm goes off, I can justify not going way too easily so when my alarm goes off on my phone I programmed this statement to pop up, "Do not justify going back to sleep. If you get up now and go you will be charged by this workout and have a great day. If you do this workout solo later in the day it will only be harder and may not be as good of quality. And if you skip it, you will regret it and beat yourself up over it". I never regret waking at 4:30am and going!!!!! Let’s say the weather is not cooperating. It certainly can be a valid excuse to skip a workout in dangerous condition. But listen - it could possibly rain on race day :0) When there are harsh conditions aside from anything dangerous of course, this gives you experience that you may need for racing. Getting a few harsh condition workouts under your belt can really help you execute a good race in similar yucky conditions. And if the conditions are perilous then simply take the workout indoors. Go to a spin class, or run on the treadmill. So next time your alarm goes off and you go to hit the button to turn over & continue to sleep, think “no regrets”. Or the next time you look outside and it’s way too hot and humid or pouring rain, just think how much stronger you will be as a result of training in such harsh conditions. Or the next time the thunder is rolling and you see an ominous sky, just take your workout indoors on a treadmill or join a spin class. FOOT PAIN RELIEF SUGGESTIONS RESULTING FROM ILL-FITTING SHOES If you begin experiencing foot pain that has been persistent for a week or more and/or notice a change in the shape of at least one of your feet, talk to someone who has experience in dealing with similar issues. Many times a minor complaint is just a simple fix, like a size, stability level, foot support or shoe brand change recommended by your local running or comfort shoe store. Once identified, hopefully sooner than later, and before surgery is even a consideration, there are also products available that can help reduce the severity of pain and even minor foot deformities. They may be just enough to keep you going with minimal discomfort. Remember, the earlier you act on any unusual pain or structural issue the easier and less expensive it will be to treat, and potentially save you a lifetime of pain and embarrassment. It’s important to keep in mind that foot pain may alter gait and be directly responsible for overuse pain and injury to any number of areas of the body. Specifically caused by tight, ill-fitting shoes and occurring over a period of time, the following five foot issues should have been prevented, and may be helped by wearing properly-fitted footwear. Once you get into properly-fitted shoes, here are some fairly inexpensive aids to help provide additional relief. Bunions, caused by very tight shoes, severely squeezing the toes together and resulting in a large dislocated bump on the inside ball of the foot with the big toe angled toward the rest of the toes, eventually causing one or more to slide sideways and overlap. A Bunion Guard and Toe-Spacers can provide proper separation for better foot function. The same type of protrusion can also occur on the outside of the foot at the little toe, called a Tailor’s Bunion or Bunionette. Hammer-toes are caused by very small shoes pushing back on the longest toes, cramping and forcing them back and down. Toe-straighteners can help reposition them into a straighter position. Corns are painful bony protuberances occurring either between the toes and/or on top of the toes. Caused by excess pressure and rubbing, a doughnut-shaped corn pad can provide pressure relief. A Neuroma is very painful forefoot pain and caused by squeezing the foot together typically by shoes that are extremely narrow in the forefoot, irritating the nerve sheath, usually between the third and fourth metatarsals. Wider shoes and a metatarsal pad, which separates the metatarsals, taking pressure off the nerve will relieve pain and allow it to heal, if caught early enough. Blisters and Calluses are usually more short term and are caused by excess shearing and pressure from shoes not properly fitting the shape of the foot. A product called Second Skin helps to pad and heal blisters. For Calluses, various pads designed for specific areas of the foot or a generously padded sock work nicely to reduce them. Ingrown Toe Nails are also associated with excess pressure on the side of the big toe, forcing the nail to grow into the skin. A wider and possibly longer shoe should eliminate this short-term condition. If any problem persists or continues to get worse, a visit to a podiatrist who specializes in all foot and ankle conditions or an orthopedic surgeon who treats injuries to the musculoskeletal system through surgery may help identify and correct an issue. Alternatively, a physical therapist who works to improve movement and manage pain through muscle stretching and strengthening, or a massage therapist who works on muscle relaxation and treats soft-tissue related pain and movement by manipulating muscles, can also have excellent outcomes for a variety of muscle-related pain. Do you ride your bicycle on the street? Do you ride on a multi-use trail? Are you a triathlete logging miles for your next sprint or Ironman? Maybe you ride a beach cruiser to your local craft brewery, or perhaps you have a hybrid that you ride with your children to their school. Is it important that as a cyclist, your right to be treated as an equal to any other road and trail user is sacrosanct? Do you want to make sure that any tax dollars spent on local, state and federal transportation projects includes cycling infrastructure? Then you’ll want to support the Florida Bicycle Association! They are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization with a very clear mission: “Our goal for Florida bicycling is to network and share best practices, to educate and advocate, and to build awareness as a unified voice. We strive to create a Florida where bicycling is safe, respected and encouraged for transportation and recreation.” FBA has been in existence for over 20 years, and is one of the best-kept secrets in the state. They were incorporated for educational and charitable purposes, and have been one of the primary resources for local and state governmental metropolitan planning organizations, legislators and their staff, the media, and the public on a wide range of issues regarding cycling in the state. Toward that end, they provide materials to educate bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists about safely sharing roadways and paths. FBA emphasizes the concept of the bicycle as a vehicle, and they advocate for the Complete Streets policy, the SUN Trail initiatives and what is known as natural surface funding. Perhaps more importantly, FBA gives voice to the people who ride bicycles by networking with clubs, groups and individuals across the state, to listen to their concerns, to share best practices and to tell their story - be it happy or sad, inspirational or devastating - to educate and advocate for alternative transportation and active lifestyles so that it is heard at the local, state and federal level of policy-makers. Why is all of this important? Simply put, it is because there are always people - politicians, individuals, and competing groups with other agendas - who would like nothing better than to reduce or eliminate many of the cycling venues and infrastructure so important for a vibrant and active Florida. There are always projects that need someone to “champion” the rights of cyclists, to make sure we’re not given short shrift when those projects are envisioned, designed, vetted and funded - and often, that someone is FBA. In short, the Florida Bicycle Association, and its only full-time employee, Executive Director Becky Afonso, is the organization working hard for each and every one of us who ride our bicycles, whether we’re 9 or 90 years old, whether we ride in groups at 25 mph or cruise at 5 mph, and whether we like riding on the street, riding on a bike path, or commuting to work. I would highly encourage each and every one of you to check out FBA (www.floridabicycle.org), and consider joining the organization. No other group does so much with so little to make sure that we can all enjoy Florida on our bikes! Membership is only $25 per year. Let’s all help them work to keep Florida a cycling paradise! John Sinibaldi, Jr. Advisory Board Member, FBA BIO: John Sinibaldi, Jr. has been cycling since he could barely walk; his late father, John Sinibaldi Sr., was a two-time Olympian, USA Bicycling Hall of Fame member, and 30+ year cycling advocate and ambassador in Pinellas County. Over the past 40 years, John Jr. has been a member of the St. Petersburg Bicycle Club, the Suncoast Cycling Club, the Mad Dogs Triathlon Club, was a race director for the Mad Beach Triathlon for many years, and has been actively involved at the local, state and national levels advocating on behalf of all cyclists.

HALF MARATHON ROUTE
GET INVOLVED!
The Phil Doganiero 3 Bridge Race honors a man who was considered by many to be Clearwater’s leading ambassador and best friend. Doganiero, a graduate of Clearwater High School and Florida State University, a nationally recognized entrepreneur, humanitarian and dedicated athlete, passed away in 2015 at the age of 58. He loved to compete and did so in numerous marquee athletic events around the country. His vision was to hold a race that took runners over Clearwater’s three bridges. Last year Phil’s dream became a reality. Hope to see you for the 2nd Annual Phil Doganiero 3 Bridge Race!

How to get your course certified
The easiest way to have your course certified is to hire someone who is already skilled at measuring for USATF certification. Prices vary according to each measurer’s pay scale, but be prepared to spend $400 to $500 for a typical 5k.

You can measure your course yourself if you are sufficiently motivated and willing to devote the time and attention that it requires.
