RUNNING SHOE
BASICS A
also addresses people who tend to supinate. Supination is where the heel hits the ground and the foot rolls outward.
There are three major types of shoes that address three major types of feet.
The third basic type of running shoe is the motion control shoe. This shoe addresses people with severe pronation problems. It offers the most support for anyone that tends to roll in excessively especially people with flat feet. People who have ankles rolling in also can benefit from a motion control shoe. These shoes have a very strong medial post and tend to have a wider outsole to better stabilize the foot.
major question you should be asking yourself about the running shoes you are about to buy is “what type of shoe is this?” The right type of shoe is critical because the shoe must match your foot type.
The first type of shoe, the stability shoe, addresses the majority of the population and helps the foot correct pronation problems. Pronation is where the heel hits the ground and the foot moves to the side as it travels forward. It refers to the inward roll of the foot. The stability shoe has a medial post made of denser material on the medial or inside part of the shoe. It helps the foot from rolling in excessively. You can recognize a stability shoe by looking for gray EVA or other extra support features on the inside of the shoe. You will notice it is harder than EVA material on the outside of the running shoe. The second type of shoe is the neutral or cushion shoe. If a person has a neutral foot the heel of the person makes contact with the ground and the foot travels in a straight line as it moves forward. A neutral or cushion shoe has no medial post and the entire midsole generally has the same support. The neutral/cushion shoe
All good running shoe companies make all three types of these shoes, so you should try on these types of shoes from several different companies to insure a proper fit. You will find that all of the shoes in each category come in various intensity levels, some stability are more stable than others, similarly some neutral shoes are firmer or softer than others. You can customize any of these types of shoes with a good insert that will add more cushion or more stability to the shoe. Make sure you try the shoe you are going to buy with the insert you want and test them out together. If you wear orthotics remember to take them with you to try on running shoes because the orthotic must work naturally with the shoe. Bill Davison, BA CPed

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE OFF SEASON So - the last race of the season has passed. What next? One of the most overlooked and ignored parts of an athlete’s season is the off season. What is the off season and what is the importance? The body needs rest and time for recovery. The mind needs recovery also. So, planning out and executing an effective off season is crucial for further growth and improvement. Off season does not mean 10 hours a day Netflix binging and a gallon of ice cream each evening before bed. Off season is relaxing and resting those muscles that have been carrying the athlete through the season while still staying active and fit. The typical off-season ranges between 4-8 weeks depending on schedule and upcoming races. Generally during this time most athlete’s timeline falls during the holiday season. This is the time to enjoy the holidays, family and friends. So, what to do during this time? 1) Enjoy your family and friends and thank them for putting up with you through training and racing. 2) Reflect on the past season and the accomplishments gained along with the places visited and friends made. 3) Begin planning out next season. Look at schedules and choose your race plan. “A” Races, supporting races and fun races. 4) Change your exercise to fun activities. Take that spin class. Take out the mountain or road bike and ride for enjoyment. Cruiser ride to the beach or on the trail with the family. Go to yoga classes. Take fun runs without a Garmin. Get in the pool for some great swims. The off season is a great time to dive into masters swim classes. Paddle board, unicycle, juggle. Anything that could not be fit in because of training season. 5) Enjoy the holidays. Don’t fall off the wagon on nutrition but have that slice of pumpkin pie or that helping of stuffing. Don’t overdo but as you get into pre-season you can tighten up your nutrition again. 6) Assess your equipment. Time to upgrade your bike? New running shoes? New training and racing nutrition plans? Now is the time to look. The off season is a perfect time for that bike fit. 7) Research race teams and coaches. Is this the year to get serious with a coach or is it time to join a team for camaraderie and motivation? Many options are available according to time and goals. Take time to make sure the coach or team fits your needs. The ultimate goal of the off season is to re-charge your physical and mental batteries. To keep the motivation for the upcoming season. Have fun, enjoy family and friends, try new things, stay active with fun exercise. Plan and execute a proper off season and you will be ready to attract pre-season training fresh and focused! As always feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. What every TRIATHLETE or RUNNER (yes that’s you) should know 10% Rule
1.Never increase your volume by more than 10% per week 2.Always warm up with easy cardio before your ever stretch for a MINIMUM of 10 minutes at 5060% of max HR. The more intense the workout the more of a warm up you will need 3.10% of your total volume of training should involve functional training like lateral movement patterns, balance exercises, and dynamic stretches in an effort to optimize performance and avoid injury. This is best before and after each workout. 4.If you are attempting to change your form apply the 10/10/10 method. For 10 days practice the new form for 10 minutes in front of the mirror twice a day. 5.On a super hot humid day (above 86 degrees and higher than 80% humidity) add almost 10% additional time to your normal pace. 6.Ice for acute injuries and heat for a chronic injury. It’s best to apply Ice or heat for 10 minutes every hour 7 When you change any equipment, like shoes, bike saddle, or bike you should ease gradually into using the new equipment for the first 10 days. If you have a 5 mile run and you are wearing new shoes then just run 2 miles and change shoes for the remainder, gradually increasing the volume in which you use the new equipment each workout for the first 10 days. 8.Drink your body weight - here in hot humid Fl in the summer time and as active as you are you should drink your body weight in ounces of water a day so if you weigh 120 lbs you should drink 120 ounces of water a day. During training of 60 minutes or more, START with 10% of your daily water goal per hour. 9.If you are coming back from an injury (more than a week off from training) you should not do any speed work until you have at least 4-6 easy effort training sessions under your belt and 4+6 =10 so there you go the 10% rule is in effect. 10.Training with the use of a heart rate monitor is essential. Your maximum HR is a bio marker and has nothing to do with your age or your fitness level. If you have been accurately tested for your maximum heart rate this means that if you are running at 80% of max HR you will then FEEL like you are at 80% of perceived maximum effort. Typically your effort from run to bike and run to swim will vary by 10%. So if you are biking at 80% of max HR then you will feel like you are at 90% of perceived maximum effort. And if you are swimming at 80% of max HR it will feel like 90% of perceived maximum effort. Trust me on this. Note the better condition you are in for each discipline, the lower this 10% gap is. 10 more tips! 1.Get a stick. Use a massage stick to activate your muscles as part of your warm up routine 2.For optimal recovery or problem tight muscles use a foam roller as part of your post workout routine 3.Coconut water (the real stuff) is the healthiest thing you can drink when you need more than water. 4.Know the difference between pain and discomfort. I consider something painful when it causes me to alter my normal form. If you feel a nagging pain stop and take 24 hours off of all activity you do in which you feel the pain. If pain persists then take 48 hours off. You may need to take 10 days off to get rid of a nagging pain. You don’t want the nagging pain to turn into an injury. 5.When feeling under the weather it’s best to exercise at low intensity 50-70%maxHR or 50-70% of perceived maximum effort. 6.When you are on antibiotics do not do any speed work or explosive exercises like plyometrics as antibiotics can temporarily compromise the integrity of the tendons and ligaments so risk of injury is greater 7.When feeling a virus coming gargle with salt water every hour to fight it off 8.Sleep is as important as training. As an athlete you need 8-9 hours of solid sleep per night 9.Recover with raw fruits and veggies after a workout. Daily you need to eat 4 fist size servings of raw fruit and 5 fist size servings of raw vegetables. 10.Reserach states one should replace running shoes every 300-500 miles to avoid injury. Personally, I replace my shoes every 500 miles.

LEG-LENGTH DISCREPANCY – ONE OF THE MOST UNRECOGNIZED CAUSES OF RUNNING AND WALKING PAIN Leg-Length Discrepancy (LLD) can contribute to a very significant percentage of pain and injury in the general population, and to an even higher degree in runners and exercise walkers. The more steps a person takes, especially with the additional ground-reaction forces that running and faster walking create, the more vulnerable misaligned body structures become. The moving body is an amazing machine and will attempt to adapt to any and all stresses applied to it. It will do everything it can to try to maintain its vertical alignment and center-ofgravity, allowing it to stand erect or continue moving in its intended line of direction - with the least amount of discomfort. The body will attempt to decrease existing pain, even compensating and sacrificing other body structures to minimize it. If the initial pain lasts too long, the compensating structures may themselves become stressed enough to exhibit their own issues. When this happens, the body needs help. A trained professional can help identify the issue and offer solutions based on his/her education and, most importantly, experience. LLD can be classified as either structural or functional. A Structural LLD can be a longer bone in one leg versus the other, creating the longer leg. Conversely, it may result from an injury to a growth plate in the leg at a young age, stunting growth, causing it to be shorter. A Structural LLD will show up on an x-ray. Regardless the cause, a Structural LLD most likely cannot be changed without surgery or maybe some very intense and continuous physical therapy. A Functional LLD is one that does not involve bone length or inherent structural joint differences from one side of the body to another. It must be measured or visually recognized while standing and/or moving. A Functional LLD is a created asymmetry that can have many causes and may result from soft tissue injury to muscles, injured tendons or torn ligaments on one side of the body changing joint function, to muscle/tendon imbalances due to everyday activities. Once recognized, physical therapy may be beneficial to correct Functional LLD, but also must be maintained as long as these real-life activities remain the same. Examples would be: different leg and hip positioning and movements while sitting, especially driving, for long periods of time; playing any sport that has a dominant side; repetitively playing or working in any position that doesn’t involve equal movements to both sides of the body (“wax on, wax off” for Karate Kid fans); running/walking toward or with traffic all the time; sleeping in mostly the same position; moms propping their babies up continuously on one hip…the causes are endless. If unrecognized, the result can be a lifetime of needless pain particularly in the low-back, hip and knee. Once identified, what if I told you a quick “cure” that you can try would most likely not cost more than about $12? And it can be used for either Structural or Functional LLD! In the next issue I’ll get more in-depth on how the body tries to compensate for LLD, ways to identify it, and relate some testimonials and personal experience in dealing with this much overlooked malady. Always keep in mind though, when dealing with the human body, there is no guarantee that anything will work all the time and for everyone. But, when you see something consistently and immediately changing lives, it’s at least worth a try. Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, CPED, BOCPED, MEMBER ACSM

How to get your course certified
The easiest way to have your course certified is to hire someone who is already skilled at measuring for USATF certification. Prices vary according to each measurer’s pay scale, but be prepared to spend $400 to $500 for a typical 5k.
RACE COURSE DISTANCE
You can measure your course yourself if you are sufficiently motivated and willing to devote the time and attention that it requires. Knee Replacement Q & A Shoshanah Vaughn
How long ago was your surgery? I had my right knee replaced in October 2016 after I found out it was basically bone on bone. Was there a particular treatment protocol you were prescribed after your knee replacement? Yes. After surgery, I was referred to physical therapy that only consisted of band exercises and very little range of motion exercises. I had very little range of motion in my knee (100-120° flexion), so I needed something else.
From Knee Surgery to Triathlon: Interviewing Attorney Omar Medina
What other treatments did you try? I also tried injections, PRP Therapy and Stem Cell on my knee. None of those treatments were helping me get back to an active lifestyle. I still had limited range of motion. What type of active lifestyle were you aiming to get back into? Before surgery, I used to be a competitive middle-distance triathlete. After surgery, I wanted to get back into triathlons, but my poor range of motion from bad therapy did not get me back into training quick enough. What was your next step towards regaining better range of motion? That’s when I found Dr. Rhee, my Sports Chiropractor. I wish I found him sooner. He broke up scar tissue with ART and helped me regain almost full range of motion in my knee (150° flexion), and now I have almost no pain whatsoever. Dr. Rhee has a unique approach to care that I haven’t seen anywhere else. If you want a quicker route to recovery, go see him. So, you are back to being active? Yes. I am now able to train for a triathlon again. I work out 6 times per week. I enjoy yoga and inclined treadmill workouts. I also take spin classes 3 times per week and go road biking once or twice on the weekends. I’m even starting to increase my biking and swims without difficulty, discomfort or pain.

What is the best advice you can think of to give other knee replacement post-op patients seeking to become more active?
“Rehabilitation is the key to good recovery. Make sure you do quality rehabilitation and not just the minimum. Dr. Rhee has a unique approach to care that I haven’t seen anywhere else. If you want a quicker route to recovery, go see him.” 78
