THE
LITTLE THINGS
W
experienced salespeople and get fitted for a shoe that will let you accomplish your goals. Remember the life of a running or walking shoe is about 300 to 500 miles or six months of regular use. One little thing to do to save foot pain is to not go barefoot in houses with very hard floors. Use a good supportive sandal when walking on hard surfaces. Sleep Many of us have a good idea about what we need to do to exercise, but we need to make sure our bodies get plenty of rest. Exercise tears down our bodies and sleep and rest gives it a chance to rebuild itself. The general recommended sleep time is 6 to 8 hours. Smile One of the comments I have heard often is runners look like they are in pain when you see them running. If we smile a little more it will make us and others feel better. Plan a trip Plan one with your family, perhaps do a half marathon in some great location like Napa Valley. Practice gratitude Be thankful that you can get out there and enjoy the exercise of your choice. Help others to achieve what they are trying to accomplish by training with them and giving them positive reinforcement. These random acts of kindness can be very beneficial to helping someone stay on their planned course. All of the activities listed above are proven to help you lead a happier life. So give them a try, and have a bright new year.
e are starting another year and another chance to improve our lives by making ourselves healthier. A lot of us make resolutions about improving our bodies by paying more attention to our diet and exercise then most of us don’t follow up on these goals or just forget about them. If we just make little changes perhaps we would be able to accomplish those which create the big changes we are trying to achieve. Listed below are some little things to think about for the New Year that I hope will make you healthier and happier. Exercise The big key to exercise is to do something you enjoy doing so you will stay with the activity. You can set this goal at anywhere from 7 minutes a day to 45 minutes 4 or 5 days a week or more. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. To be a better runner, you need to run more but you can get your heart rate up by walking at a brisk pace. It would be good for both the runner and walker to vary their routines and intensity levels on a regular basis. Every one needs to work on flexibility and strength in some manner to make their bodies work better. Whether you are just starting out or trying to get to a higher level, I would recommend finding a trainer who will set up a personalized program for you. One of the first things people need to think about when starting an exercise program is their foot wear. Many have the idea that even though the shoes are a couple of years old and they haven’t used them in a while, they will be fine to use now. Most athletic shoes are made from cellular material which breaks down over time even if it only sits in a closet for two years. You run the risk of injury using old or worn down footwear because it will not support your feet as needed. Your feet get longer and flatter as times goes on, so go to a specialty store with knowledgeable,

SMART RUNNING SHOES ARE HERE Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPED, BOCPED About as custom as you can get with today’s technology, one company is leading the development of “shoes for you”. Brooks is in the forefront of adaptable running shoes. Brooks has lead running shoe innovation dating back to the ‘70s. Many of their innovations are consistently used by all running shoe companies to this day. Different density outsoles, podular forefoot flex technology, EVA in midsoles, pronation control devices, all important reflectivity, more form-fittilng forefoot upper designs, heel snug lacing and removable insoles continue to be found in every running shoe company’s offerings across the board. Always looking for running shoes to do more for more runners, Brooks introduced adaptable cushioning in the 1980s. Hydroflow allowed runners with different weights and gaits attain personalized cushioning. Prior to that, and continuing to the present, runners are relegated to coping with the durometer (measure of density or cushioning) that each company decides is best. The problem is that a 95 pound person and a 350 pound person are riding on the same density material. The former will feel very firm and the latter will crush, bottom out and maybe last only a few weeks. More advanced than Hydroflow, Brooks’ new midsole technology, DNA, not only offers customized cushioning for any weight and gait but also returns energy proportional to the amount of force applied. In simple terms, DNA is softer the lighter you are or the slower you run and firmer the heavier you are or the faster you run. This results in custom feel and function. Lighter and/or less competitive runners and walkers will benefit from the cushiony, shock absorbing ride but competitive, faster runners will reap the benefits of DNA firming up under foot to get off the ground quicker with each step, especially during their sprint at the end of a race – comfort throughout the run and performance at the end – all in the same shoe. You may remember from science class, a very similar material, cornstarch and water. When mixed together in a bowl it forms a very gooey substance. You can reach in, play with it and let it slide through your fingers. But give it a good punch and it firms up to a solid mass and won’t go anywhere. The harder you hit it the firmer it gets. To the contrary, conventional midsoles get softer as more force is applied – similar in effect as running in soft sand, though not as exaggerated. On the shelves February 1st, Brooks takes adaptable to the next level. The new Transcend will be the first shoe to intrinsically help control a wide variety of injury-causing motion issues without the firmness and weight of higher densities in the midsole. The premise is based on the fact that everyone has his or her own preferred path of motion, basically, everyone runs differently. By studying this individuality, Brooks’ highly innovative new shoe design concept intends to allow for individual differences in gait pattern but aids the foot when it begins to veer off course. Talk about a smart shoe, not only does it adapt to your cushioning needs but your stability needs as well - maybe a step closer to one-shoe-fits-all? Everyone should try this “smart shoe” on.

THOUGHTS FOR THE NEW YEAR Here we are, with another year come and gone. Holiday feasting is past, and, if you are like me, there’s a few pounds to lose, and serious training to commence. Living in Florida gives us wonderful outdoor opportunities. It also gives us a nearly year round season for racing, so let’s get started!
Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the immediate Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.
January/February
Upcoming early season events to use for gauging conditioning, and to train for include: Chilly Willy Duathlon (February), Escape from Fort Desoto (April); and, of course, St. Anthony’s the end of April. Even though these are early calendar races, we still need to train smart to remain healthy for late year racing. I’ve learned the hard way recently that if we don’t pay attention to our body’s needs, we pay a price. My case in point: I’ve been training to do the Vuelta PR, a 375 mile three day circumnavigation by bicycle of the island of Puerto Rico. My training has been much more intensive than normal, and my rides of longer duration. I’ve found, that while I drink more fluids on the bike than anyone around me, I still fluid deplete. My coach (shout out to Roy Foley of aeroprocoaching. com) diagnosed correctly my problem; I am starting my rides already “half empty” because I don’t hydrate properly on a daily basis. Rule of thumb, especially in Florida with it’s year round heat and humidity: drink at a minimum in ounces half your body weight each day. In my case, I currently weigh 190, so I now make sure I drink 95 ounces of water each day, regardless of training. I’m willing to wager that many of you reading this make a similar mistake and don’t hydrate properly during each day. With a new year of racing upon us, I also encourage you to bring a friend into this lifestyle; help nurture their interest; help their initial training by being willing to train with them until they are comfortable on their own. That would be a wonderful gift from you to a friend or loved one: the gift of health, of challenge, of self image building; of taking advantage of the beautiful area we are privileged to live in. Be sure to take the time to enjoy what you are doing; don’t be so intense that your outdoor activities become a job with no enjoyment instead of something to look forward to doing. Remember how great it was at your first race to hear encouragement from others? Helping a “newbie” is a great way to give back. I remember in my first triathlon , at the swim start, I had a shirt on with my running number pinned on it, thinking that was required (it WAS my first race). Fortunately, a fellow triathlete, obviously with more experience, stepped in and educated me, saving even more significant embarrassment than I had when I realized I was the only one at the swim start so attired. I’m sure each of you this year will have an opportunity to assist another in a positive way. Finally, please volunteer to assist at a race that you are not racing. Putting on a race only looks easy when it is done professionally. The reality is many bodies are needed. Give back so others can enjoy the experience. I promise you will see the event you work from a different perspective, and be the better for it. See you at the races.
Brian Harrington Immediate Past President, USATriathlon Board of Directors Race Announcer Attorney

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SCENIC 5K RACE COURSES IN FLORIDA! ABOUT THE ROBINSON PRESERVE
William Robinson and his son Parks Robinson owners of Fit2Run donated 6.4 million dollars worth of land, and the Manatee County purchased the rest to create this 497 acre preserve. There are 6 miles of kayak and canoeing trails, 12 acres of open water, 56 acres of marshland, 20 acres of uplands, 2 docks, a 500 foot long boardwalk, 6 bridges, 10 miles of coastal, 7 miles of shell walking/jogging trails, 2 miles of paved trails, fishing piers, bird observation locations, even a 56 foot observation tower. The waterway system was carved out of intertidal canals and the water is a mixture of the Manatee River and the Palma Sola Bay. “The Robinson 5K track offers an authentic coastal Florida experience through a remarkable restoration and conversation property. If you are looking for a challenging and eye-opening event, this is it" - Charlie Hunsicker, Dirextor, Manatee County Natural Resources Department.
