As we enter the new year, with crashes and injuries to cyclists occurring at an increasingly alarming rate, I want to beg you all who have not yet purchased lights and video for your rides to do so. If you have cameras and lights, I implore you to use them for EVERY ride. Don’t think for a minute just because it’s daylight, you are safe. In fact, statistics show we can actually be invisible to drivers during the bright daylight, unless you are doing everything to make them see you. Strobe lights, both front and rear, bright clothing, including bright socks, can help.
If you have the misfortune of being struck by a motor vehicle, having a video camera (garmin, go pro, CycliqPlus are a few of many available products on the market) that is recording your ride can make the difference between recovering financial compensation for your injuries, or getting nothing. As an attorney actively representing injured cyclists, I can tell you more often than not, the driver’s report of how the crash occurred and who is at fault differs dramatically from the reality that will be caught by your video. That $250-$400 video/audio investment has made the difference of hundreds of thousands of dollars that but for the camera evidence would not have been recoverable.
And, of course, don’t forget a quality MIPS helmet to protect your brain.

Staying Motivated
By Pete Williams
Motivation, or lack thereof, is a challenge for anyone, whether it’s someone training for a fifth Ironman or someone looking to get off the couch and begin a fitness regimen.
The common denominator is fitting training into a busy schedule of work, family, and other commitments. Life gets in the way and it’s easy to rationalize not working out. After all, you’re busy providing for your family and being present for friends. Who can find the motivation to work out?
Some people find the motivation to get into a smaller dress or swimsuit. So-called external motivation, however, tends to be short-lived. The more powerful motivation comes from within. Not only do you want to avoid the many physical problems related to poor diet and inactivity but you want to have the strength and energy to be that bedrock for your loved ones. Here are five ways to find that motivation:
GET FAMILY INVOLVED – It’s easier to get motivated to train if it’s something the kids or significant other want to do such as running or swimming. In our screen-based culture, any opportunity to move with loved ones should be embraced. Family provides a much deeper level of motivation, however. People tend to become parents today later than in previous generations and want to make sure they have the energy and stamina to deal with teenagers in their fifties and even sixties, to say nothing of wishing to hang around to see those kids well into adulthood. That means training now. Our significant others will love us even if we put on weight or experience health issues because of unhealthy lifestyles. But who wants to be a burden to the person they love most? Thinking of loved ones and the future is the strongest motivation to work out.
TRAIN, DON’T EXERCISE – This motivating factor is more subtle. Don’t think in terms of getting exercise but rather engaging in training. Exercise is for dogs and prisoners. It sounds optional. If you miss exercise, it’s easier to rationalize. Oh, something came up with the kids or I had to stay late at work. I’ll get back to it tomorrow. Then tomorrow never comes.
Not only that, exercise has no meaningful goal attached to it. Missing a training session sounds like a setback, which it is. That’s why it’s important to think in terms of training. This becomes easier by signing up for a 5K race, obstacle mud run, sprint triathlon, or open-water swim - something that requires training. Having that date on the calendar provides something to train for and provides motivation not to miss a training session. That’s because you’re not exercising; you’re training.
ANNOUNCE A GOAL – Once that event date is on the calendar, announce it publicly. Social media has made this much easier. Posting about signing up for a race will yield supportive comments and perhaps inspire friends to enter the event. Others might suggest nearby training groups you didn’t know existed. Most importantly, you’re now motivated to live up to the public goal. Social media isn’t for everyone, but many find it beneficial to provide training updates and, of course, photos of triumphant finishes.
MAKE EARLY APPOINTMENTS – Many people find it’s advantageous to train first thing in the morning before life gets in the way. An after-work training session can get derailed by late meetings or family-related developments. Becoming a morning person takes motivation, however. The key is to make early appointments, whether it be with a trainer, a training partner, or by scheduling a class. It’s a lot harder to hit the snooze button when you’ve paid for a training session or have a friend waiting at the gym or in the driveway. A training partner serves as an accountability partner, providing extra motivation.
GO STREAKING – This doesn’t require nudity, though there are clothing-optional races like Tampa Bay’s own Caliente Bare Dare 5K (May 1, this year) and Lake Como’s Dare to Go Bare 5K (March 27) that provide the motivation to lose a few pounds before race day.
Think in terms of building training streaks. Vow to do something each day. Runners need not run every day, but they can spend the non-running days performing 30 minutes of yoga or foam rolling.
Maintaining a streak of any kind is motivation to keep it alive. Stephen King has famously written 2,000 words a day, every day, for decades. Jerry Seinfeld, for many years, would mark a red X on a year-long wall calendar for each day he wrote new jokes. This motivated him to constantly create material and not break the chain. King and Seinfeld were inspired to keep their streaks active, believing they’d somehow lose their edge if they stopped. Call it motivation or superstition, but it works, whether in writing, comedy, or training. The longer the streak goes, the more motivation there is to keep it going.

How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain
Savories Sweets Spirits
Throughout the holidays we are bombarded with the temptation of savories, sweets, spirits. I refer to them as the three S's. I would like to provide you with some tips to help you manage and answer the temptation that comes along with three tempting S's which could lead to unwanted weight gain.
Savories. Truly savor each bite of what you choose to eat. Be present and in the moment as you enjoy what you eat. While eating ask yourself "is this worth it?". If it is then enjoy. Mindless eating is dangerous and a waste of calories. Give yourself grace. It's ok to eat the bad stuff on a rare occasion so help yourself digest it by eating HALF as much raw food and load HALF your plate with raw fruits and vegetables. This will also help you feel more full and help you from over eating.
Spirits! For cocktails a good strategy is to match each cocktail with an equal serving of water. So BEFORE each cocktail drink a glass of water. This will help you stay hydrated and keep you feeling full, making it harder to over eat. And for your holiday cocktails, I recommend you use vodka which is the lowest in sugar, calories, and the least processed.
Sweets is the most tempting for me. Share your desserts, or just try a bite. Portion control is a game changer.
Move more and counteract any of your overeating with activity. Keep in mind any palm size inch thick dessert is probably about 250-300 calories so that means it will take an extra 20-30 minutes of exercise at an effort in which you are sweating to burn those extra calories.
Socialize & Exercise Dance at parties. Make social engagements active in an effort to burn those extra calories. For example, instead of planning a luncheon with your friend, go on a power walk. Or instead of going to a movie or out for a drink with your friend, go to a group exercise class.
I hope you found this helpful and implement these strategies to fight the extra weight the three S's can bring on this holiday season.

To see? Or to be seen? That is the question
To see or to be seen, that is the question, you need to ask yourself when using and or buying a light for training in the dark. And with these hot humid summer days, there is relief to run earlier before the sun rises.
To see or to be seen are two different purpos es wearing lights serve and both are needed. Typically white lights are to see and colored lights are to be seen. The better you can see in the dark the safer you are and the more visible you are in the dar k the safer you are. Below, I list lights that I find effective, comfortable, and affordable. You can find all these on Amazon.

COLD WATER SWIMMING IN FLORIDA ?
Now that we are starting to get colder air and water temperatures here on this side of Florida there are many questions about what to do and how safe it is to swim without a wetsuit etc.
Something I don’t like is when people make fun of others for using wetsuit or neoprene, first of all, everybody is different and we all have different levels of tolerance and most of the people that swims without a wetsuit at some point in the past they wear a wetsuit.
I’m my opinion and my experience going on 30 years now teaching and coaching swimming is that everything has to be gradual, get in the water slowly acclimating to the temperature and watch the time and increase each time by tolerance, know your limits, don’t jump in or dive into the cold Water unless you are used to the cold water. Cold water can cause gasping of breath and cold water sh ock, which can be dangerous, then when you finish swimming dry off asap and warm up gradually. (Don’t jump in the hot tub or hot shower)
We have a disadvantage here in Florida because it could be cold for two days and then it gets warm. But you can get used to colder temperatures slowly
Stop making fun of people for wearing a wetsuit! If you wear a wetsuit you are not wimp, please don’t call yourself a wimp!

Heart Rate Variability & How It Affects Your Running
WHAT IS HEART RATE VARIABILITY?
Heart Rate Variability or HRV is a measure of the variation of time between each heartbeat. This variation is controlled by the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and is different from the number of heart beats per minute.
WHAT IS THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM?
The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is the part of the nervous system responsible for control of the bodily functions not consciously directed, such as breathing, heart beat and digestion. There are two components of the ANS, sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic nervous system regulates our ‘fight or flight’ response whereas the parasympathetic nervous system regulates our ‘rest and digest’ functions.
HOW TO OPTIMIZE HRV:
It is a common misconception that HRV cannot be manipulated. Reality is, HRV can be manipulated and used to tailor pace and effort during a run. The key to optimizing HRV is focusing on deep breathing. During the inhalation portion of breathing, our sympathetic nervous system (the stress/exercise branch) is activated. During the exhalation portion, our parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest branch) is activated.
In order to create coherence within the ANS during breathing, inhale for 3 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds consistently to make this your new breathing pattern.
