STINGRAY SEASON IS HERE
Stingrays are in all our coastline, so do the “stingray shuffle” when entering beach waters. Sometimes they hide under the sand so keep your eyes open. By shuffling your feet in the sand, you will scare off any stingray that might be around, avoiding getting stung and/or hurting the stingray. If you do get stung, see a lifeguard. Those who get stung will be treated by the lifeguard, and then they will be transported to the nearest fire station for monitoring. FYI (the only thing before receiving professional attention that calms the pain, is hot water as hot as you can tolerate it) The ideal temperature for a soak is 110°F to 115°F (43°C to 46°C). Reheat your water every 10 minutes to keep it continually hot, and soak the wound for 30 to 90 minutes, or as long as it takes for the pain to subside. The hot water may also draw out venom, which resembles jelly. https://www.webmd.com/first-aid/stingray-injury-treatment Stingray season is expected to last through October. For more information, call (727) 462-6963. flraceplace.com

One of my favorite times of year: sun, the Tour on tv, the fun of Summer Suggestions to get through it all: ride early; the Florida sun can literally kill; sometimes fast, and, with skin cancer, sometimes slow. Wear sunscreen. See your dermatologist at least annually, more if, like me, you have fair skin. Watch the tour with friends. Better yet, join a “pool”; makes watching more exciting. Don’t ride during the heat of the day, and be watchful in the late afternoons for our oft present lightning storms. Those thin rubber tires won’t insulate us from a strike. If you hear thunder and are on your bike, you are in danger. Clear air lightning is a real thing. With attention to the weather before leaving for a ride, you can increase your chance of having a safe ride. Lastly, if you get caught in a rainstorm; the sooner you clean your bike the better. Be careful out there. And enjoy what Florida offers us.

Written by Coach Celia Dubey HEAT AND ICE
Injuries can take your training to a standstill. With a better understanding of your injury and proper treatment, you can get back in the game faster than before. Most health care providers suggest icing an acute injury and heating a chronic injury. Unfortunately, most of us do not understand the difference between acute and chronic so we self-treat with whatever we think feels good. Enhancing your body’s physiology with the proper use of ice and heat at the proper time can help shorten a recovery episode. The physiology of ice can be best explained as follows: Ice constricts blood flow to muscles. As the muscle cools, the amount of blood in the muscle diminishes as the constriction process pushes it out. This is great to help reduce bruising, swelling and discomfort. As the muscle warms and the blood vessels expand, new blood comes rushing in and cleans the debris left behind from the injury and stimulates the healing process. It is recommended that ice is only applied for 10 minutes every hour. The more often the cycle is allowed to transition, the faster one’s body can recover from an acute muscle injury (injury having severe onset and a short course). Always place a towel between the body and the ice to prevent trauma to the skin. Note that the increasing the icing time has a negative effect on the body. Moist heat is a great treatment tool for chronic muscle injuries (injuries persisting for a long time). Moist heat applied to the injury site opens up the blood vessels allowing blood to flow more freely. Typically, chronic injuries have some sort of ischemia (lack of blood) associated with them. The ischemia is detrimental to healing and the moist heat helps reduce it. Apply moist heat for up to 20 minutes every hour and always place multiple towels between the body and the moist heat to prevent trauma to the skin. What happens if you place heat on an acute injury or ice on a chronic injury? Think of this scenario. You burn your mouth on a hot cup of coffee (acute). Do you suck on an ice cube or drink more hot coffee? Ice reduces the inflammation to the burn and diminishes the nerve response allowing some sense of a good feeling. It’s a little different with a muscle injury in that the heat initially feels good even though it is adding inflammation and swelling. Then, once the heat is removed the injury site is typically more irritated than if you just left it alone. Ultimately, you are extending your symptoms and delaying the healing cycle when heat is applied to an acute injury. With a chronic injury, applying ice when heat is suggested can delay the therapeutic effects that heat offers

Piriformis Syndrome Sometimes running can be a pain in the butt. Literally! There is a small muscle located deep in the back of your hip called the piriformis that is often the culprit. When you run your piriformis can become tight causing pain in your butt or even down the back of your thigh. The piriformis is a stabilizing muscle that helps support your leg when you hit the ground. When the other muscles, particularly your hamstrings, become fatigued…your body will try and compensate, often using the piriformis to try and help push you forward when running. Unfortunately, the piriformis fatigues easily which can cause it to tighten during a workout. Sometimes tightness in the piriformis can even cause irritation to the nearby sciatic nerve causing pain, numbness and tingling into the leg. Piriformis pain can be present while sitting for long periods of time and with running.
Stretching the piriformis can greatly reduce pain and improve hip mobility, allowing you to run more freely. While there are several stretches that can help, there is one that seems to be the most effective for people most often: • Lie on your back, bend your hip and knee. • Grab your knee with the same sided hand and place your opposite hand on your shin. • With your top hand, pull your knee diagonally across your body towards your opposite shoulder. • When you feel the stretch in the back of your hip, pull gently with the hand on your shin so that your hip rotates. • Hold that stretch for 25 seconds and then release. Repeat the stretch 3-5 times. • Perform this stretch at least twice a day, morning, and afternoon/evening. • This stretch can also be done before and/or after running to help improve flexibility and reduce pain.
Maintaining flexibility in your hip allows you to run more efficiently, improve your cadence, and can reduce the frequency of overuse injuries. This is a basic recommendation about this injury. As always, seek medical advice should you be experiencing painful symptoms that do not readily resolve. If you need assistance in resolving piriformis pain or any other running related injury, feel free to email me at: carrigo@advancedrehab.us with questions or comments. Keep moving!
