Let Us Help You Get Your Training Back On Track. Enhanced Performance Now Offers Kinesio Taping. Kinesio Taping (KT) can assist with increasing range-of-motion by providing continual myofascial stretching. It also helps to: • stabilize a weakened or loose joint • either inhibit or facilitate muscle movement • with fluid and edema management in tissues KT is becoming an essential tool for Massage Therapists worldwide. Rooted in the science of Kinesiology, KT activates neurological, circulatory, and lymphatic networks to relieve pain and swelling and restore normal musculoskeletal function. Karen Stromberg, LMT, is one of the first Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioners in the Tampa Bay area. "I came to Karen Stromberg with a running injury that just wouldn't heal. As any runner knows, an interruption in training can be a major set-back. Thank goodness I turned to Karen for help. In a single therapy session, she was able to not only alleviate the pain, it was as if the injury never occurred." —Karen Collins, Licensed Massage Therapist

TRAINING By HEART RATE

Written by USAT Coach Celia Dubey Congratulations. You made the commitment to yourself to be healthy & fit.

So now you want results, right? guessing out of training.

To get results you have to take the

Want to lose weight? Then you need to expend more energy than you take in to get lean & lose fat.

Training with a heart rate monitor will

tell you how many calories you are burning so you can track calories in and out.

Want to get stronger, healthier, & faster? Then you need to train

according to Heart Rate so you can get more out of your time spent

exercising. If you are not challenging your body, then you are not

optimizing your time and calorie blast during your training. You also must challenge yourself in order to break plateaus and get stronger.

Want to gauge your fitness & pace yourself for aerobic exercise? Then you need to train according to heart rate. Training with a heart rate monitor will tell you what zone you are in so you can pace yourself properly.

First, you need to determine your Maximum Heart Rate. Please know your max heart rate has NOTHING to do with your age or your fitness level. The best way to learn what your max HR is to complete a few sub max tests that we can administer for you or you can do yourself. Email me at Celia@TarponTotalFitness.com to get the sub max tests or schedule a sub max HR testing session. OR you can estimate your max to be any where between 185-195 bpm. Somewhere within this range is where most people fall when tested. I could go on and on a but this is supposed to be a one pager article Next you need to know what the different zones of exercise are, the

exertion level of each and how & when to use them. With the use of a heart rate monitor, you can pace yourself & train in proper zones so you know exactly if you are working hard enough or too hard.

BROOKS – DESIGNING SAFE SHOES FOR ALL RUNNERS’ WANTS AND NEEDS Long considered the best-fitting, safest, and most innovative shoes in the running arena, Brooks has led with functional inventions that most running shoe manufacturers have for years incorporated into their own lines, namely, EVA midsoles, stability components in midsoles, reflectivity for night visibility, removable insoles, the heel-snugging top eyelet, and directional lugs for better outsole traction and a smoother toe-off, to name a few. Note that Brooks’ research developed all of these in the late ‘70s and very early ‘80s and to this day remain standards in the industry. Today, Brooks continues to outpace all other manufacturers with the most highly researched materials and biomechanically correct, adaptive, comfortable and safe running shoes on the market - as close to a custom shoe ah runner can get. Below are more recent exclusive advances that help Brooks remain the #1 choice for runners with “A Perfect Ride for Every Stride”. A brief description of each model follows in the last paragraph. Which do you prefer? Brooks’ cushioned and most shock-absorbing midsoles, namely, BioMoGo DNA, are the only biodegradable midsoles on the market. They also last longer and provide custom cushioning that adjusts to the weight of each individual, with each step. This adaptable cushioning absorbs the appropriate amount of shock based on the amount of landing force of the individual. The proper amount of shock absorption helps eliminate pain and lessens the chance of injury by delaying fatigue and reducing stress and strain on joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. For runners desiring to enhance their speed and performance and get a higher return on their energy expenditure, Brooks’ DNA AMP midsoles will fit the bill. DNA AMP midsoles are made from highly resilient polyurethane with an exterior skin to capture impact energy, and then strongly release it as the runner toes-off, resulting in the most energy return of leading performance running shoes. DNA AMP has an inherently firmer feel, necessary for a quick on-and-off-the-ground, fast run. Brooks’ GuideRails Holistic Support System is based on the most recent biomechanical research that natural overpronation or oversupination is desirable for some runners based on their knee orientation. If the ankle is turning in and the knee-cap is aligned with the foot, the ankle is doing its job. The same if the ankle is turned out. The position of the knee, not the ankle, is the most important part of the shoe-fitting process, as it is a most vulnerable joint and most injury-prone area of the runner’s body. To track properly, the knee-cap should be centered directly over the foot. The ankle is known as a “mobile adapter”. Its purpose is to make sure the knee and the rest of the body is aligned, regardless of its own position. Brooks’ recently updated GuideRails Holistic Support System allows the ankle to do just that – move just enough to align the knee, but be there to comfortably keep excess movement in check. By being naturally and properly aligned, pain causing compensations are greatly reduced. With its Flex-and-Roll forefoot technology, Brooks is the only brand purposefully providing universal forefoot flexibility in every shoe, adapting to every arch length to reduce gait compromising shoe interference pain/injury. Support/Cushion with BioMogo DNA – Transcend 6 ($160) – most plush and maximum cushion support shoe with GuideRails; Adrenaline 19 ($130) – versatile support with GuideRails and #1 selling running shoe at specialty running; Beast/Ariel ($160) – most supportive shoe on the market; Addiction 13 ($130) – second in support . Neutral/Cushion with BioMogo DNA – Glycerin 17 ($150) – most plush with maximum cushion; Ghost 11 ($120) – superior cushion, wide fitting and #2 selling running shoe; Dyad 10 ($130) – for hard to fit straight-shaped feet. High Performance/Neutral – Levitate 2 ($150) – neutral and fast with DNA AMP maximum energy return; Ricochet ($120) – 50/50 BioMogo DNA/DNA AMP for a light, softer, fast ride; Launch 6 ($100) – light, inherently springy and fast with BioMogo DNA. High Performance/GuideRail Support – Bedlam ($150) – supportive and fast with DNA AMP maximum energy return; Ravenna 10 ($110) – light, supportive and inherently springy with BioMogo DNA. Connected/Low-Profile – PureFlow 7 ($90) – cushioned, close-to-ground feel with a 4mm drop and BioMogo DNA. Gene Ulishney , BS HPE, CPED, BOCPED, ACSM, Brooks Sales Representative

I’m frequently asked by athletes how they can be insured when they’re not injured by a car, but injured when training through no fault of anyone else: the classic accident. I asked Heidi Bushko, a friend who deals with insurance in her career, to provide a guest column. Here it is:

Accidents Happen

By Heidi L. Bushko, Bushko Insurance Group Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/ auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. Brian is also on the Board/ Executive committee for the Frogman swim, proceeds of which benefit the Navy Seal Foundation providing multiple forms of assistance to families of Seals who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country. He is married to Awilda, and remains active in our sports community as both a participant and as an announcer of triathlons, running events, and the Seal Frogman Swim across Tampa Bay. He can be reached at bch@bchfirm. com, or 727-515-9397.

Accidents seem to happen at the most inconvenient time: when you least expect them and have no money to pay your copays and uncovered expenses. My husband and I honeymooned in Hawaii in 2001. We were riding bicycles down Mt. Haleakala when the chain on my husband’s bike broke. The metal petal on the rental bike free spun and took a chunk out of his leg. Needless to say, he needed stitches. We had to pay the clinic up front for the bill and submit the claim when we returned home. I don’t remember how much of it was our responsibility but it was unexpected and not budgeted for on our trip. If only we had coverage to help pay the copay for those stitches. But there is, I just didn’t know it at the time (since I wasn’t a licensed insurance agent yet). Accident plans are for just that: to help you pay the copays and uncovered expenses of covered accidents. Accident plans have a schedule of benefits that pay you based on the injury. For example, if you dislocated your hip as a result of a covered accident, an accident plan would pay you between $2400-4800 depending on whether you needed surgery or not. If you break a rib, you would be paid $300-600. These are just a few examples of covered injuries. The best part of an Accident plan is that the claim money is paid to you and not your insurance company or doctor. You then decide what to do with that money. Accident plans can also include coverage for hospital confinement, accidental death coverage, transportation/lodging assistance if you have to travel more than 50 miles to receive treatment, and a health screening benefit (such as a mammogram or colonoscopy). Sounds expensive, right? Accident plans are actually extremely affordable. You can purchase on and off the job coverage or just off the job coverage. Off the job coverage for an individual is $15 per month, individual and spouse is $23/month and families are $35/ month. The maximum issue age is 79. And you cannot be singled out for a rate increase based on your claims. I am happy to report that I am now the proud owner of an accident plan. In the last 2 years, I have submitted 3 claims. My daughter hit her head on the coffee table and needed stitches, she broke her arm and my husband got stuck in the leg with a catfish barb while fishing. Our claims were paid in a few short weeks. We received over $800 for my daughter’s broken arm which helped us pay the $1200 bill from the orthopedic doctor. I can be reached at 727-474-8468 or heidi@heidibushko.com for more information. I look forward to help protect you and your family from a covered accident.

Patellar Tendonitis Christopher Arrigo, MS, ATC, PT Advanced Rehabilitation “Running is bad for your knees! every runner hears this comment at some point in their career. Usually from a friend who

is not a runner and trying to rationalize their dislike of physical activity. Although occasionally you still may hear this from a poorly informed medical professional that does not deal with endurance athletes. Regardless of the source of the statement, it just is not true. Most people that develop knee arthritis are not active and physically out of shape. The fact is that the number one predictor for developing knee arthritis is having an high body mass index (BMI). Although running is NOT a cause of knee arthritis. The knee is the most frequently involved part of the body when it comes to running injuries. Knee pain typically occurs in the front of the knee and most commonly involved the patellar tendon often referred to as Patellar Tendonitis. The patellar tendon is located in the front of the knee just below the kneecap or patella. It attaches the quadricep muscle in the front of the thigh to the shin bone and helps the quadricep muscle absorb force when the foot hit the ground. With increased mileage and intensity, the force on the patella tendon and the area in the front of the knee can be prone to inflammation and pain. This is particularly true when mileage or intensity are increased to quickly during training. Pain in the patellar tendon does not necessarily mean that you should stop running. If you are not limping or changing how you run, it is generally safe to continue training. Incorporating a proper dynamic warm up prior to running, coupled with stretching exercises for your quadriceps, groin, hamstrings and calf muscles after running will help to alleviate your knee pain. Warm up and stretching should be combined with icing after activity and proper shoe selection. These few simple steps will help to ensure that you do not miss any time training. Temporarily avoiding exercises that may increase stress on the front part of the knee, such as deep lunges and squats can also improve patellar tendonitis symptoms. Staying away from plyometric (jumping) exercises and hill repeats will also reduce stress on the patellar tendon and allow for a faster recovery. Running on flat surfaces at your normal pace is the most effective way to train while managing overuse injuries in the knee like patellar tendonitis. Swelling, pain that gets worse during a run, and pain on the shin bone below the tendon are all signs that this may be a more serious injury that needs assessment from a sports physical therapist or sports medicine physician.

RACE COURSE DISTANCE (Are you getting what you’re paying for?) There are different methods that race organizers use to lay out and measure a road race course. And as most runners know, not all courses are as billed. For a wide range of reasons Race directors, event organizers and race participants should all be concerned about run course accuracy.

METHODS COMMONLY USED TO MEASURE RACE COURSES THE BEST & THE REST (or the Good, the OK, the Not So Good)     

USATF Certification Measuring Wheel Global Positioning Systems (GPS) Bike and Car Odometers Pedometers

THE BEST - USATF Course Certification USATF is the official certifying body of running courses in the United States. The USATF certifying process assures that the course is the exact length as advertised. USATF Certification assures runners that times will be based on a properly measured distance. Many race directors don’t know the difference between “Sanctioning” and “Certifying” a race. Race sanctioning is an agreement between the event and USATF to follow certain criteria, offer insurance, and receive “official” standing with USATF. An event that is sanctioned may or may not have a certified course. It is important for runners to know this, so they don’t assume the course is also certified. Certifying the route deals with the distance of the route, making sure it is accurate by using the Calibrated Bicycle Method of measuring, the only standard method used around the world and recognized by USATF. EDM (Electronic Distance Measuring) may only be used by a qualified surveyor, and is usually cost prohibitive for any race, so it will not be included in this discussion. As long as there are no changes to, or construction on the course, USATF certifications are good for 10 years. Records set on a USATF Certified Course at events that are also sanctioned with USATF, will be official, pending validation by USATF. Officially certified courses are also recognized by the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). Measurement is done using a "Jones Counter” equipped bicycle. The Jones Counter is calibrated on the day of the measurement, both before and after the measurement. This assures that the course is accurate. If your course is more of a cross country race, then it will not qualify for a certification. But can be accurately measured for the day of the race. Examples of this are beach races, races that include a large piece of course over grass terrain like on a golf course, undefined trails, or shifting gravel or dirt roads.

Why Should Race Organizers Want A Certified Course & Why Should Runners Care?     

A record set on a certified course will be official, pending validation by USATF. Running on a certified course is extremely important to elite and other accomplished runners, particularly when course records and personal bests come into play. Most runners like to compare performances in order to gauge personal progress. Comparisons are difficult if length is suspect from course to course. Runners who pay an entry fee for a road race have a right to a properly measured course. Average runners and walkers want to be assured that they are getting what they are paying for when they sign up for a race and that the course is exactly as advertised. Races should use the course certification number to advertise on their website, allowing runners to download the map and become familiar with the course before they run it.

How to get your course certified

The easiest way to have your course certified is to hire someone who is already skilled at measuring for USATF certification. Prices vary according to each measurer’s pay scale, but be prepared to spend $400 to $500 for a typical 5k. You can measure your course yourself if you are sufficiently motivated and willing to devote the time and attention that it requires. A new measurer should be willing to invest about $400 in equipment and 30 hours or more of their time for a 5k. In either case, you will need to contact the USATF Road Course Regional Certifier for your state. This person can refer you to qualified measurers that you might hire. Or, if you choose to measure the course yourself, the Certifier can provide guidance to help you through the process. The USATF Course Measurement manual can be downloaded in PDF format from USATF.org. And there is an active blog on measuring with the Road Racing Technical Council at RRTC.net. When you are finished with the course measurement you will need to send the required paperwork to your state Certifier with a fee of $30.

Feet First into the Open Water Swimming If you are thinking about doing an open water swim in the near future, you should take in consideration a few pointers that will help you have a great experience. Swimming in the ocean, lakes or rivers could be intimidating, generating anxiety moments. At OWS Crosstraining with Leo we provide clinics tat will help have a great first experience, pool clinics and OWS clinics are available, all year round. 1. 2. 3.

Join a swim masters club at your local pool, talk to the head coach about your new endeavor. Start slow and build into the swim. Start with a comfortable pace and build into your swim. Get a feel for the water temperature. If the water is cold give yourself a chance to acclimate to the temperature before you swim too far. 4. Stay close to shore as you begin to build your confidence. Before you move into deeper water. 5. Never swim alone. This sounds simple but you should never go out for an open-water swim by yourself. Join Swim Clearwater group, they always have activities posted. 6. Get googles dark and clear. In Open water you will need to have a pair of good goggles that will provide ability to sight better. 7. Learn how to sight in the pool before you go out. Learning how to lift your head and look at an object such as a diving platform or something o the pool deck will help you learn how to sight in the open-water to navigate your way around. 8. Practice drafting. Practice drafting with your swim partner. Swim just off to the side and below the hip or their feet to reduce your effort in the swim. Swimming in the drafting position can reduce your swim effort. 9. Open water could be cold, buy a wetsuit. They help insulate against the cold and keep you buoyant in open water. 10. Have a plan, know your level of fitness and then visit us at Clearwater Beach, talk to coach Leo and start swimming the distance that will feel comfortable with. 11. Have fun, always have fun. Q & A with Professional Boxer Shoshanah Vaughn How long have you been a professional boxer? Since 2009. What is your weight class and current ranking? Super Welterweight. I am ranked # 8 in the world by the WBA (World Boxing Association).

From Run-outs to Knockouts: Interviewing Professional Boxer “Silky” Wilky Campfort

How many wins have you had to get you such a great ranking? I have won 25 fights, and 13 wins have been by knockouts (KO’s). I only lost 3 fights. What contributes to those wins? Hard work, dedication, persistence, and training. How often do you train to keep going year after year? When I have a fight scheduled, I train 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday. I run in the mornings, and I train in the boxing gym in the afternoons. How many miles do you run? I run 4.5 miles Monday to Friday and then run sprints on Saturdays. Running really helps me with conditioning and also helps me keep my weight down. I go from runs to KO’s in no time and try to out run myself each time. During training and fighting, when you get injured, what helps with that? Going to see Dr. Rhee at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay helps me recover a lot faster. They have used regular chiropractic treatment like e.stim and ultrasound and adjustments, but they also use cutting edge stuff too like Class IV Laser Therapy to help. I also enjoy the WholeBody Cryotherapy to help me recover from my workouts. Dr. Rhee has a lot of new devices that others don’t, which separates him from the rest.

In one sentence, what is the best advice you can think of to give other athletes for getting in shape and avoiding injuries?

“Work hard, push yourself, listen to your body, and rest when you think you need to.” 78
