March/April

We saw during the Pandemic the popularity of cycling as a healthy way to get out of the prisons that were our homes. Many people found the joy of riding outdoors, and some are continuing. With the end of the Pandemic, we have seen revision to old habits (bikes gathering dust, pets returned to shelters). That is, in my opinion, about to change. Welcome $6-$7 per gallon gas gouging in the immediate future. As this unfolds, we will see a gigantic increase in other means to get about. I predict there will be a new cycling revolution, this time, not for recreation, but for everyday travel. Are our cities prepared? Certainly not. Will our law enforcement, already biased against cyclists in general, become even more so as those who have no understanding of the rules of the road for cyclists take to the streets (and sidewalks)? I think there will be some difficult times for all. In St. Petersburg, where I have lived essentially my whole life, I have attempted to begin a dialogue with police representatives in order to increase understanding on both sides. To date, the officials contacted within the Police department have shown no interest. That’s not only short sighted, but can actually become dangerous as more and more riders take to the streets for short rides for necessities of life. Imagine an inexperienced rider, with bags of groceries hanging from their handlebars, riding the wrong way on a public street. Wait, I’ve already seen it, no imagination required. Let’s hope our city fathers, and others in government begin to see the value of mutual cooperation between the experienced cyclists and law enforcement.

Lessons Learned From 2021 and What to Expect in 2022! Goodbye and good riddance to 2021! The past 2 years have been challenging to all of us both physically and emotionally. The pandemic has taken a toll on many of us from health, fitness, diet, training, and mental stability. What 5 things have I learned from 2021? Here is my list! 1) The importance of friends and family and the time we waste not keeping these relationships at the forefront. It sometimes takes a crisis like the pandemic to make us realize how important contact and relationships are. Before COVID many of us took advantage of having friends and family close without realizing how important they are to us. 2) The importance of our team and the support that we supply each other. Being a part of Kennedy Law Racing or any team has been a godsend to so many of us. The support and camaraderie become so much more important during times of stress and conflict. 3) The importance of health and fitness. This has been a major challenge to many of us. The uncertainty of training and racing has affected many of our motivations and have seen downward spiraling of fitness levels. 4) The importance of safety. 2021 has been a tragic year for cycling accidents. We are not invincible, and it shows more and more. We want to be around and healthy for a long time to come! 5) Patience! This has been the toughest! Wanting all these obstacles behind us. It has seemed that we clear one hurdle and there is another bigger one in front of us. Taking each hurdle one at a time. That’s it for the negative! What can we expect for 2022? Will there be changes? Short answer is YES! We are still dealing with the pandemic in 2022 but the great thing is we have learned how to manage through the challenges without locking ourselves down and still staying safe! 1) Races are back and in full swing for 2022! Social distancing practices are in place, but we can now get out and race again! It is time to start living our lives again as normal as we are able! 2) Team functions are back! We have put many functions on the back burner but again, with social distancing practices we are able to get back together as teams and take advantage of the camaraderie we have been missing the past 2 years. 3) Safety practices! What can we do to stay healthy and unharmed? More virtual team training rides, supervision while training! Looking out for each other! 2022 is what we make of it! We can continue in the path we have had to lead the last 2 years, or we can step up and take our lives and health back! This doesn’t mean being reckless with our health. It means making plans, goals, and directions safely for the year. Time to get back outside. Time to enjoy family, friends, and teammates. Time to enjoy training and racing. Time to try something new. A new race, a new distance, new environments. Take swim lessons, yoga classes, spin classes. Get out and enjoy all that there is to offer from the community, the weather, and the opportunities. Let’s make 2022 GREAT! Park Alsop – Director Kennedy Law Racing www.kennedylawracing.com kennedylawracing@gmail.com

BROOKS – DESIGNING SAFE SHOES FOR ALL RUNNERS’ NEEDS AND WANTS

Long considered the best-fitting, safest, and most innovative shoes in the running arena, Brooks has led with functional innovations that most running shoe manufacturers have for years incorporated into their own lines, namely, EVA midsoles, stability components in midsoles, reflectivity for night visibility, removable insoles for more structured comfort, heelsnugging top eyelets, dual density and segmented outsoles for better heel wear, a softer and more flexible forefoot, and directional lugs for better outsole traction and a smoother toe-off, to name a few. Note that Brooks’ research developed most of these in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, and to this day remain standards in the industry for those companies who recognize their significance. . Today, Brooks continues to outpace all other manufacturers with the most highly researched components and biomechanically correct, adaptive, comfortable and safe running shoes on the market - as close to a custom shoe a runner can get. Below are more recent exclusive advances that help Brooks remain the #1 choice for runners with “A Perfect Ride for Every Stride”. A brief description of each model follows at the end of this article. Brooks’ highly cushioned and shock-absorbing midsoles, namely, BioMoGo DNA, are the only biodegradable midsoles on the market. They also last longer and provide custom cushioning that adjusts to the weight of every runner, with each step. This adaptable cushioning absorbs the appropriate amount of shock based on the amount of landing force of the individual. Basically, DNA responds proportionately to the amount of force applied to it – not too hard and not too soft. The proper amount and consistent shock absorption lessens the chance of pain and injury by delaying fatigue and reducing stress and strain on the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. For runners desiring to enhance their speed and performance and get a higher return on their energy expenditure, the Brooks Levitate’s DNA AMP midsole will make a runner faster with less effort. DNA AMP midsoles are made from a highly resilient polyurethane, including an exterior skin, to capture impact energy and then strongly release it as the runner transitions from heel contact to toe-off. This results in the most energy return of leading performance running shoes. DNA AMP has an inherently firmer feel, necessary for a quick on-and-off-the-ground, fast run. Brooks’ GuideRails Holistic Support System is based on the most recent biomechanical research that natural overpronation or oversupination is desirable for some runners based on the knee’s orientation to the foot. If the ankle is turning in and the kneecap is aligned with the foot, the ankle is doing its job. The same if the ankle is turned out or supinated. The position of the knee, not the ankle, is the most important part of the shoe-fitting process, as it is a most vulnerable joint and most injury-prone area of the runner’s body. To track properly, the kneecap should be centered directly over the foot. The ankle is known as a “mobile adapter”. Its purpose is to make sure the knee and the rest of the body is aligned, regardless of its own position. Brooks’ GuideRails Holistic Support System allows the ankle to do just that – move just enough to align the knee, but also be there to comfortably keep excess movement in check. Being naturally and properly aligned not only saves energy but reduces numerous pain and injury causing compensations. With Flex-and-Roll forefoot technology, Brooks is the only brand purposefully providing universal forefoot flexibility to adapt to every arch length. Allowing the foot to flex where it does naturally, eliminates a shoe-induced lever which interrupts gait and alters body function and alignment. Proper alignment improves sketetal dynamics, reducing excess wear and tear, pain, and injury-related abnormal movement. Below are very brief descriptions of each Brooks shoe based on common runners’ needs for neutral or support as well as preferences for Cushion (soft and comfortable) or Energy Return (power and speed) Cushion/Neutral with BioMogo DNA – Glycerin 19 ($150) – most plush and smooth with maximum cushion. Ghost 14 ($140) – superior cushion, wide fitting and #1 selling running shoe at specialty running. Dyad 11 ($130) – for hard to fit straight-shaped feet, and neutral gait.

Beast/Ariel 20 ($160) – Brooks’ most supportive shoe for those needing a straight last and maximum control. Addiction 15 ($140) – strong support and a straight last for those needing a straight last and high level of control.

Energized High Performance/Neutral with Springy and Adaptive DNA AMP – Levitate 5 ($150) – neutral, springy and fast with DNA AMP maximum energy-return. Levitate Stealthfit 5 ($150) – neutral, springy and fast with DNA AMP maximum energy return and a stretch-to-fit upper.

Levitate Stealthfit GTS 5 ($150) – supportive, springy and fast with DNA AMP maximum energy return and stretch-to-fit upper.
