WE REALLY
CARE
W
during the summers. We have Wednesday night runs from the store which are sponsored by our vendors and local companies that help us promote a healthy lifestyle. You will see Running Center representatives at health fairs and small business events around the Tampa Bay area.
e have just celebrated our 15th year anniversary in business as The Running Center and have been reflecting on how things are going. As with all small businesses we have had our ups and downs but have always tried to improve and move forward. We try to be a place that treats its customers as friends. Seth Godin, author of Tribes and Linchpin has said that good specialty stores are successful because they “care more” for their customers than the chain stores or big box stores.
I would like to think we are the only running store in the Tampa Bay area but I know this is not the case. There are several good locally owned running stores which do a great job in their community supporting the sport of running and if they are in your area, you should support them. We all do “care more” for our customers and prove it every day. We thank you for your past support of our store and look forward to serving you in the future.
We prove we care more by providing the newest and best products for our customers, with information to enhance their use. We also are constantly updating our knowledge on the latest innovations on each new product. I have become a Certified Pedorthist to be able to give more insight into the correction of running injuries and the proper fitting of running shoes. When we see the new updates on shoes, we know that some people are “married” to their shoes so we look for ways of helping our customers adjust to the change. Feet are unique to each individual and we base our purchases on what will work the best for our customers. All our employees are active runners and who try on each new shoe to understand the fit and feel before selling that product. We all use the products we sell and do not carry any products we do not believe in and feel would be a benefit to our customers.
Bill Davison,
BA CPed
Owner
Running Center TampaBay
The Running Center sponsors local races with monetary donations, gift certificates, numbers, tee shirts and direct involvement by putting on the race itself. We have collected thousands of pairs of used running shoes for the homeless. We do free clinics for high school and junior high distance runners May/June

KNOWLEDGE by Iliotibial Band Syndrome: Side of Knee Pain The most common cause of pain on the side of the knee, especially for runners, is from a tightening of the iliotibial band, which runs from the hip, down the side of the leg to the ankle. The entire band tightens, but pain shows up at the knee joint where the band can rub against tiny bony protrusions. It’s an insidious injury that typically hurts when you run, but stops when you revert to a walk.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome
OVERVIEW
BEST PRACTICES THAT CAN HELP
1. Decrease training mileage and intensity at least 50% for 1-2 weeks. Then slowly increase back in no more than 10% weekly increments. 2. Perform a 10-minute ice-massage, 2-3 times daily. (Fill a Dixie cup with water and freeze it. Then tear the rim off the top, exposing the ice. Ice the knee, Re-freeze and repeat. 3. Gently stretch your buttocks and IT band several times daily. Ask for a demonstration in your local specialty running store, not at large mall-based stores. 4. Use a foam roller to regain elasticity in the IT band. Again, ask for a demonstration at your local specialty running store. 5. Take a regular anti-inflammatory for up to two weeks. Be sure it is approved by your physician and agreeable with your stomach. 6. Avoid running on crowned surfaces and track running. If you run on a crowned surface (any road), keep the hurt leg closest to the top of the crown. 7. If the above steps do not bring relief within a couple of weeks, be sure to seek treatment from a trained medical professional, as other serious conditions can exhibit same or similar symptoms.
A common source of side-ofknee pain is iliotibial band syndrome (ITB). Symptoms If you experience pain along outer side of the knee joint when running, cycling or climbing stairs, you may have iliotibial band syndrome. Treatment Disclaimer If you don't start to find relief from these suggestions within a couple weeks, be sure to see a medical professional, as other more serious conditions can exhibit same or similar symptoms, and only a trained medical professional can actually diagnose conditions such as iliotibial band syndrome.

RUNNING BETTER AND FASTER WITHOUT TRAINING HARDER Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMTI, C PED, BOC PED has been studying running for over 38 years. He has a comprehensive approach to evaluating posture, foot movement, gait, and running equipment, including their potential inefficiencies, which, if not addressed, may lead to compromised performance and injury. Particularly focusing on readily available over-the-counter products, such as shoes, socks, foot supports and leg products, Gene demonstrates how their proper selection and use can improve performance, decrease fatigue, lessen recovery time and reduce or eliminate injury. At the St. Anthony’s Triathlon Expo, a triathlete came into the Brooks booth, looked around, and when I asked if I could help him with a new pair of shoes, said with a smug smile “If you could make me faster…and get rid of my knee pain”! I gave Rob a quick posture and lower leg and foot analysis and noticed his sock-less, overpronated feet in one of the lightest racing flats on the market. Seeing what I had to work with, I was confident in saying, “I think we can”. And before his disbelieving eyes could translate into words, I quipped, “But, you will have to wear a heavier shoe, a padded sock and an over-the-counter foot support device”. He looked at me like I had three heads, in total disbelief, and challenged me to explain such an absurd statement. Rob proceeded, “It doesn’t make sense. Everyone knows that you’ll be faster in a lighter shoe; if I add a foot support device it will make the shoe even heavier; and, I don’t have time to put socks on during my transition”! “Old school”, I said“ #1, with your support needs, you can’t afford not to wear a heaver (more supportive) shoe; #2, you’ll waste more time in not wearing an appropriately padded sock ‘gasket’; and #3, with your inefficient gait, by not wearing a foot support, you are not maximizing control between your foot and shoe, resulting in longer contact with the ground as well as shortening your natural stride, costing you even more time. In addition, without addressing the above, you leave yourself open to the possibility of setting yourself up for unwanted aches, pains and even injury…maybe like the one you have. And, no, aches, pains, injuries and marginal performance are not inevitable occurring results of training. They are mostly inevitable occurring results of improperly selected footwear! Of course”, I added, “proper Foot wear cannot replace training But it will enhance it.” Now I had Rob’s attention and asked if he had twenty minutes for a postural and gait analysis and footwear test. He said ok. First I had him do a step test with what he was wearing, or better, what he wasn’t wearing. With his extremely light racing flat and no socks I had him walk about thirty feet. I counted 14 steps and told him what I was doing. He walked back and counted 14 steps again.“Ok, I said,“now put on all this stuff and we’re going to do it again”. Shaking his head, Rob reluctantly put on my selection of equipment: a nicely padded Thorlo sock, an over-the-counter footbed and a supportive pair of Brooks Racer ST’s. The Thorlo sock produces the gasket effect, creating oneness between the foot and shoe, eliminating unwanted, inefficient, time-wasting movement. the Spenco Total Support footbed is dynamic, naturally supportive and non-invasive to the foot, deriving its initial support at the heel with a deep heel cup, and continuing support through the forefoot with its metatarsal pad and big ball-of-the-foot cut out. Its direct competitors offer a hard pillar of support more toward the arch, sometimes inhibiting much-desired natural pronation, while ignoring the forefoot altogether. The Brooks Racer ST offers a fit that’s not overwhelmingly snug and restrictive, a Diagonal Rollbar that offers appropriate control for overpronation, and superb forefoot flexibility that Brooks is known for. Forefoot flexibility, or “flex and roll”, is probably the most important feature in a shoe for performance enhancement and injury prevention. Rob then stood up and I immediately noticed that his lower extremities were now neutral. “Now, let’s take that same walk again”, I said. We counted his steps –- 12 ½. He looked at me, puzzled. “Let me do it again” –- 12 ½ steps a second time. “What’s going on…what’s the trick?” Rob’s curiosity turned to guarded excitement. “No trick”, I said. “Without getting into the fine details of biomechanics, shoe mechanics, the gasket effect of a padded sock, as well as the balancing effect of a suitable foot support device, you have just experienced their cumulative effect on appropriate foot position, properly guided directional momentum, and energy savings - all resulting in a more ideal and efficient gait characteristic - let alone what they’re all doing to help eliminate aches, pains and injuries.” “But, will I be faster?” “Why don’t you try them tomorrow?” I answered. Rob said “Are you crazy? Everyone knows that you never change anything on race day!” “Well” I said, “we know you have some knee pain with what you are wearing now. And I can see that your lower leg, ankle and foot are now in a more appropriate and efficient position with your new equipment. I obviously can’t guarantee it, but based on experience and knowledge with what you now have on your feet, I believe you will have a pleasant surprise. I know they just work right.” “You mean, I don’t have to break these in?” “No, as a rule, you should not have to break your shoes in. Breaking them in is an excuse for products that don’t work as well as they should, for shoes that interrupt the natural rhythm of foot movement.” Or, for store personnel who are not versed well enough in the mechanics of fitting and/or not being familiar enough with the products that they’re selling to actually recommend the best shoe for a runner. Actually, regarding breaking a shoe in, it’s really the other way around. They’re breaking you in, because you have to get used to the abnormal movements that an inefficient product is putting your foot through - you must adapt to it. Over time, the strain of adaptation can lead to unnecessary aches, pains and even injury. In my opinion, in working with tens of thousands of runners over the past thirty-eight years, I’m convinced that the primary cause of injury is running shoes. Included would be the stress of improperly fitting running shoes, the wrong support for an individual’s particular foot-type and gait, continued wearing of them well after they’re worn out, and unfortunately, mechanically flawed running shoes – shoes that just don’t work right or as well as they should. It’s not hard to immediately identify the latter. If you are having an ache or pain, see a well-trained running shoe specialist for an evaluation and a new pair of shoes. If caught early enough, most issues can be corrected long before it interrupts your training or requires a doctor’s visit. Oh, what happened with Rob? Well, he did show up in my booth after the race, shades on and hands on hips, stating, “I wore them”. Not seeing a reaction from him yet, a hint of doubt ran through my head. Taking off his shades, his expression turned from stoic to elated. With a big smile on his face, Rob proudly announced, “PR…I ran the fastest 10K I ever ran…and that was after the swim and bike! I could do another one right now!” Then Rob added “And my knee didn’t hurt!” After all this, he then tried to get me to promise not to tell anyone else about his “secret”. I don’t think that smile I left his face all morning. It was no miracle. It’s having the knowledge and relevant experience to analyze the individual and to personally fit him or her with the most mechanically sound and efficient foot equipment available. Remember, all shoes are not created equal; all socks are not created equal; all foot supports are not created equal, and all running stores are not created equal. It just helps to know which ones have the best track record. When making your purchase at your local running store, ask your salesperson why they feel their recommended shoes are for you. Have them show you how they compare mechanically to one another. If you hear “they are all the same, it’s the one that feels best on your foot”, you may want to try another running store - a comment like this is a sign of lack of knowledge or interest. Ask what their experiences are with runners returning them because of pains or other issues? Are they the correct shape for your foot? How can padded socks and foot supports help you? Do become a more knowledgeable consumer. Remember, aches, pains and injuries are not a normal process caused by training. With few exceptions, aches, pains and injuries are a normal process caused by training in an abnormal way, mostly caused by your footwear. They just don’t have to happen.

TIS THE SEASON, PRACTICE SAFE CYCLING As I write this, we are on the eve of another St. Anthony’s weekend of triathlons, expos, and fun. St. Anthony’s has now been in existence for more than thirty years, and is one of the venerable venues in the triathlon world. I hope many of you experienced this year’s event, either through direct participation, as a volunteer, or as a spectator.
Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.
May/June
With the triathlon and cycling racing seasons underway, this means many of us are on the roads training our hearts out. Some of us have and use front and rear lights on our bikes. I submit we ALL should do so, and use them any time you are riding. Yes, that means during broad daylight, as well as in the dark. Many of you know I’m an attorney, and frequently represent athletes struck by cars while training. I believe that lights on your bike, especially in “strobe” fashion during the daytime, can save you from injury by an inattentive driver. Why should you have a light on the front of your bike? So the oncoming driver about to turn in front of you sees you and doesn’t make that potentially (to you) tragic mistake. The strobe light is distinctive, and makes you stand out from other distractions on the side of the road, including homes, businesses, billboards, etc. A light facing the rear, in strobe action, similarly makes you much more visible to oncoming texting or otherwise inattentive drivers. Even when riding in the country, such as San Antonio on a weekend morning, having your front and rear strobe light operational can save you from grief and injury. An insurance adjuster who lives in that area told me that when driving those roads, cyclists often largely disappear when riding in the daytime when going into a shaded area. He has on more than one occasion nearly struck a cyclist because he didn’t see them because of the shaded area in which the cyclist was riding. He confirms with lights on, this problem disappears for him. I know its hard enough to get some cyclists to wear a helmet; I know it will be harder to convince many of you using lights on your bike can be a benefit. You don’t want to look like a “dork,” I know. But you will be a live “dork,” not a dead or seriously injured cyclist; which would you prefer? I use USB rechargeable lights; they are reasonably priced, easy to recharge, and extremely light, adding no appreciable weight or drag to your bike. The more you can do to be safe (lights, bright colored clothes, use of bike lanes where available, observing the law) the more likely you won’t become an accident statistic; or, if you are involved in a vehicle/bike accident, the easier your case will be to win because you will be giving me the ability to prove you did everything right! Please be safe, train hard, and never forget that this is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. See you on the roads. Upper Body Running Lynn Gray M.S. – RRCA Run Coach
There is little question that the lifestyle of a runner and distance walker is a healthy choice to reduce stress, keep weight in check, a way to lower blood pressure and keep a healthy strong heart. Google benefits of running or brisk walking and you can come up with at least 25 more reasons. However there are continual impact injuries which contradict many of those benefits and challenge the great innovations the running shoe industry has made, and the countless articles relating to proper running form. There are however, common concerns which are occurring among the growing number of walk to run participants regarding proper form. Generally speaking they can be seen in an obvious way as they move toward you. There is the “plodder” with both head and shoulders bent forward, the “swinger” with arms going left and right, and the “fan out” with one or both feet and legs swinging outward. It is no wonder why the questions below get asked by these participants. Why do our joints hurt? Why do the knees ache? Why do I get shin splints? Why another calf pull? Let’s start from the top – upper body strength, and then work down to the bottom– the running shoes. To begin with gaining upper body strength is a must for brisk walkers and runners. If we specifically train to strengthen both arms and shoulders plus have a strong core we can keep the upright posture, eliminating much impact. I am reminded of watching a top athlete teenager who after doing several quarter mile repeats began bending slightly forward as he reached his last few. This individual previously was complaining of back and hamstring problems which led me to do a gait analysis of his form. Sure enough, his core was weak. The gradual bending was creating a steady flow of impact on his knees and the flexed posture resulted in a gradual overuse and fatigue of the back muscles. Yes, even the “elite” athletes have gait and form issues due to upper body weakness. Physical pain and discomfort in the lower back and hamstrings due to a weak core will be revealed as we practice faster running and/or long distance walking. Let’s stay with the subject of the weak upper body and point out another common running form. This is an easy one to notice – that of the “plodder”. They run with great thoughts and seem to study the ground as if there may be gold pieces along the way. That continual hunching puts so much weight on the forefoot, knees, and shins. If the plodder goes to fast the calf muscles and possibly the achilles tendon can be pulled while forces are working up toward the glute and the lower back. Recommendation: work up to daily 1 minute planks, 3 sets of 1 minute upward weighted arm lunges, and 3 sets of 1 minute oblique twists. Let’s distribute your weight more equally around your body. It is now time to visit the mid-point of the body. Observe the “swinger”; the person who swings arms left and right yet moves forward. Much of their energy goes outward to the left and right, vs. forward. This prevents inefficiency of movement and can also add unnecessary resistance to both left and right hips. The iliotibial band once again can tighten with significant forces down to the outside of the knee resulting in knee pain Recommendation: begin with forward weighted arm lunges each day for about 2-3 minutes with rest breaks in between. Forward arm lunges towards the solar plexus of another individual give more specificity for both walkers and runners if the elbow goes all the way back such that a “sling shot” movement across the waist is accomplished. I put a large safety pin of each side of the waistline which the participant must rub against each time they do a forward arm lunge. Once the movement is biomechanically repeated enough, the individual can see their hands again as they move forward. Still not sure? Put a ping pong ball in each hand and make sure you “keep your eye on the ball” as it moves back and forth. Another benefit of this weighted forward lunge exercise is that the arms and oblique abdominals begin to strengthen which helps the forward movement become more efficient and easy; especially as the legs get tired. flraceplace.com

May/June
What about the runner who is a “feet fanner”? This is easily seen by observing one or both feet projecting outward as forward movement occurs. Generally it is one leg which makes its radical steady outward journey. Recommendation: This participant should work on strengthening their hips to make sure they get stronger on the weak “fan out side”. Travel down forward from the hips to the upper quad; strengthen it so the weak quad equals the strength of the stronger one. A tape measure test will reveal the weak leg. Many times there is actual muscle mass differential of ¼ to an inch on the weak quad and hamstring than the strong leg. It is now time for quad lifts together with hamstring curls. Then work on the actual step forward movement with weighted ankles. As in the case of the arms, do the same forward yet lifting kick outs with 1.5-2.5 ankle weights. Have the leg come up 7” to 11” so it becomes specific to the walk to run movement. Begin for 1.5 min. of lifting the weak leg up then kick out –hold for 5 seconds, put down on the ground, and 1 min. for the strong leg. Lastly, check that your running shoes are not too light; meaning they have stability from the heel to the mid-foot. This will help stabilize the foot into landing in line with your body vs. being so light it is able to flare out. In a sense, the heavier stability shoe keeps the integrity of a good solid forward foot strike. Lastly, can running shoes make a difference for those of us whose feet pronate or fan out a bit, supinate or go inward? Absolutely. Visualize running barefoot or on super light track shoes. This allows the leg freedom to move wherever and the foot to land accordingly; sometimes not in sync with the individual’s body mechanics which allow them to run with balanced form. Frequently walkers and runners will add orthotics so modification can be made to alter their landing strike just a bit which allows for more stability and efficiency of foot strike. Many shoes have built in “stability” bars and cushion, and are a bit heavier which helps the participant land more evenly as their body impacts the ground. Without an even or near even foot strike, injuries will occur especially doing longer distance walking and/or running. In closing it is hoped you can identify your altercation, if any, with your walking or running form after reviewing the most commonly mentioned forms. Have a certified running coach, trained running store operator, or physical therapist do a gait analysis. A professional in the field of movement can reveal more objectively and scientifically your gait. Most of the time even those with “perfect form” can find themselves in one of the above categories as leg weariness occurs. Lastly, when we become aware of our form or lack of it, we can make those changes which will prevent future injuries occurring so we can take many more steps throughout our lifetime.
