INSOLES & ORTHOTICS O
ne of the subjects which fuels a lot of questions pertains to the proper use of insoles or orthotics. These products differ quite a bit in the way they are fitted to your foot and in what they do for the foot. An orthotic is an orthosis designed to change the functional movement of the foot. It is critical that the orthosis be properly fitted by a medical professional. The foot needs to be cast in a non-weight bearing neutral plane which helps creates a negative impression. This negative cast is then sent to a lab which makes the orthotic and puts an appropriate cover on it. Some medical professionals use a foam box or electronic scan to create the negative impression. The box and scan can work but the chances for error are increased and may require additional adjusting of the orthotic by the medical professional. Because the orthotic changes the functional movement of the foot, it requires an adjustment period. It may take a week or two for your feet to get accustom to the changes that the orthotic is creating. The orthotics can be priced from $300 to $600 so it is important to make sure they fit properly. Many people have difficulty getting used to orthotics because they can be hard and stiff. You must work with your medical professional to get the proper fit. If you are wearing orthotics, you should take them with you when buying shoes to make sure they will work with your new footwear. Generally, you should not look for stability shoes when you have orthotics because you do not want to over correct your feet. We would recommend a good neutral shoe that works with the orthotic. You should have your orthotics checked by a medical professional every 18 to 24 months to insure you still have a proper fit.
from properly fitted inserts especially in performance footwear. These inserts can customize the fit of these shoes to help obtain their maximum usefulness. This accommodative footwear category covers very supportive inserts like those from Powerstep or Spenco to the soft cushioned inserts made from soft neoprene. These inserts should match the foot type with supportive inserts for people who tend to roll in, and cushioned inserts for those who tend to roll out. It is very important to match any insert you are currently wearing or one that you are buying to the shoes you are wearing. Some people need extra support and can add a supportive insert to their stability shoes and those who have high arches or who are neutral should match softer inserts with their shoes. The life of an accommodative insert is about one year with normal use. These inserts are priced from around $20 to $300 range. It is important to consult personnel with experience in fitting athletic shoes since these inserts are an important investment. No orthotic or accommodative insert will properly work if put in poorly fitted shoes. You can’t fix a worn out or bad fitting shoe by putting a new insert in it. Footwear, inserts and orthotics are designed to work together to make your feet feel and function better.
Every other type of shoe insert falls into the accommodative insole category. Most people can benefit

KNOWLEDGE by Morton’s Neuroma: Ball of Foot Pain The most common source of ball-of-foot pain is Morton’s Neuroma, an irritation of the nerves that run between the long bones of the foot. If you experience a burning or tingling sensation in the front of your foot, especially when working out, you may have Morton’s Neuroma.
Morton’s Neuroma BEST PRACTICES THAT CAN HELP 1. Be sure all your shoes fit extremely loosely across the knuckles (metatarsal heads). Your shoes should even feel a little “sloppy” the forefoot if you have this condition, as even a modest amount of pressure will irritate the nerves. 2. Don’t wear high heels, as they load pressure on the front of the foot. 3. Take a regular anti-inflammatory for up to two weeks. Be sure it is approved by your physician and agreeable with your stomach. PURCHASES THAT SHOULD HELP 1. Wear supportive shoes that are a good bit wider across the knuckles than you’re used to and that are correct for your biomechanics. Lower heeled shoes may be helpful. Purchase from a specialty store, like FITniche, that can accurately assess your gait and fit your foot type. 2. Wear metatarsal lifts, as they will spread the knuckles out, taking pressure off of the bones and the nerve shafts that run between them. They also shift some weight from the front of the foot to the rear.
OVERVIEW A common source of burning or tingling in the front of the foot rd (most often between the 3 and th 4 knuckles) is Morton’s neuroma. Symptoms If you experience regular pain, burning or tingling near the front of the foot, especially between rd th the 3 and 4 knuckles, you may have Morton’s Neuroma. Treatment Disclaimer If you don't start to find relief from these suggestions within a couple weeks, be sure to see a medical professional, as other more serious conditions can exhibit same or similar symptoms, and only a trained medical professional can actually diagnose conditions such as Morton’s Neuroma.

MARATHON TRAINING CHECK-UP By Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, CPED, BOCPED You found a good coach and began training for your marathon or half marathon a few months ago. Your training is beginning to peak. Hopefully you are not having any persistent pain which could be detrimental to reaching your goal. But if you are now is the time to address it. From past articles you know I believe that running pain is not normal and can be eliminated the majority of the time by a change or addition to your equipment – shoes, socks, foot supports and sports nutrition. When it comes to running pain, your first line of defense are your running shoes. If you have any pain, don’t chalk it up to something you must endure. Chances are there is a better running shoe out there for you. Go back to your running store with your current shoes to have them evaluated, and you, reevaluated. The best running stores can discuss your pain(s) and other issues such as blisters, numbness, joint pain, etc., and then make a more educated recommendation based on your shoe wear and problem areas. To help keep you from becoming injured, (something that requires you to stop running), all aches and pains during and after your run should be mentioned. While being fitted with your new shoes, ask your sales person why he or she thinks they would be a better choice. Running shoes that are matched to you will give untold numbers of pain-free and “run happy” miles. Especially if you are having foot issues such as pain anywhere on the bottoms or sides of your feet or if they are excessively wet, consider a more comfortable, padded sock. I don’t know why running and thin socks became synonymous, but it’s contrary to common sense. I would consider thin socks basically a foot covering, lacking in breathability (because they are so tightly knit), lacking in comfort, lacking in cushioning as well as not doing much to enhance the fit inside the shoe. A padded sock, on the other hand, is not so tightly knit so it breathes much better, has more surface area to move more moisture, protects the foot from impact forces, pressures, and blisters, is more comfortable, acts like a gasket to improve the fit of the shoe, and lasts much longer. Regarding blisters, I’ve found that they are mostly caused by the shoe’s shape not matching the foot’s shape. A more appropriately fitting shoe should help eliminate blistering. The ever important over-the-counter orthotic foot support – something I recommend to everyone for both performance and injury prevention, is the final consideration for a perfect fit. The very pliable mesh upper of a shoe gives a custom fit to the top and sides of the foot, but the flat two-dimensional inside bottom of the shoe does not match the three-dimensional bottom of the foot. A foot support possesses the shape that is the final link in a most custom and protective fit, enhancing balance and performance while reducing fatigue and injury. Of extreme importance, be sure to have your sports nutrition needs planned out. If not your body may fail you. To properly function, fluids, carbohydrate stores and electrolytes must be replaced regularly throughout your long runs. Your coach will help with this. But, as a general rule, begin drinking fluids with electrolytes (especially salt) before you are thirsty and take a gel every 45 minutes or so to maintain energy and muscle glycogen stores. If you don’t like the consistency of gels, try chewables. And if you sweat a lot and have a tendency to cramp towards the end of your race, take along some extra electrolyte (mainly salt) capsules. One or so an hour will help. To maintain healthy performance you must replace what your body is using up...and, plain water is not enough. Your running store is a great resource and can help keep you injury free and get you comfortably through your next marathon or half-marathon. Have fun! May/June

From Pain to Performance: Can Massage Therapy Help? Brian Klepacki, MS, USAT, CSCS Head Coach and Owner of Optimax Performance Training www.optimaxperformance.com Getting injured is every athlete’s worst fear. However it’s something that all of us has endured (or is enduring) at one point or another. As I’m sure you’ve realized an injury can severely impair performance, delay training and conditioning schedules during recovery, are costly to treat, and not to mention injuries flat out hurt. Dealing with pain and limited mobility after an injury is exhausting, frustrating, and worth the measures necessary to avoid an injury from happening. If injury prevention isn’t at the top of your list you definitely need to reconsider your priorities. Over time, training takes a toll on the body. We’ve all felt it and might still be feeling it right now. Think about the last time you’ve gone for a long training run and you’ve actually felt GOOD immediately after. What about the next day? Generally speaking most recreational endurance athletes training way harder than their body can tolerate and end up feeling it all over, especially in the muscle and joints. It’s within this period of soreness when damaged tissue heals, but when muscles are continually taxed to their max through high-performance training sessions, the odds increase that an injury, especially a recurring one, will result in a permanent condition. Massage therapy has come a long way. From spa treatment to relaxation therapy; to specialized therapies, such as sports massage and prenatal massage; and, currently, according to recent research, massage therapy is making headway in preventative medicine, such as preventing injuries in athletes. Recent research from Oxford University suggests that massage therapy may be beneficial for improving individuals experiencing pain*. The findings state massage therapy should be offered to a individual for pain management. Using massage therapy during the healing and recovery process helps to increase the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the injured area and promotes better, faster healing by flooding it with vital nutrients. Massage also helps prevent muscle stiffness from inactivity and the formation of adhesions, which can restrict your range of motion even after the injury has healed.

Is Massage Therapy the Key to Improved Performance? Athletic massage is a growing business. More and more massage therapists are choosing to enter the field of athletic massage. Since many athletes are now beginning to notice the many benefits of massage therapy, more and more athletic massage therapists are becoming available specializing in sports performance. In fact, they can be found at nearly all post-race party offering complimentary massages to anyone who approaches them. By having a deep tissue massage at least once per week, athletes can expect their muscles to be healthier, improve their flexibility, maintain relaxation and have a better sleep cycle. These are only a few of the benefits of massage therapy, but there are many more. Massage therapy increases flexibility. For an athlete to maintain optimal performance, they must maintain a high degree of flexibility. Since massage therapy stretches the muscle fibers, flexibility is promoted and maintained. Massage therapy improves circulation. With better circulation, the athlete can breathe more easily and move more efficiently. Massage therapy helps with blood flow, thus improving the circulation of the athlete and enhancing performance levels. Massage therapy promotes better sleep patterns. By getting regular massages, athletes can improve the quality of sleep they are getting each night. Getting a good night sleep helps athletes perform at an optimal level. Massage therapy increases relaxation levels. Research shows that many athletes have a “Type-A” personality and have a hard time relaxing, and stress can affect an athlete’s overall health. Massage puts one’s body and mind in a relaxed state, thus reducing the negative physiological effects of stress. Research suggests that massage even help improve an athlete's overall endurance because it helps to build up mitochondria in the body. Since mitochondria are responsible for how the cells use oxygen, having more of them helps to increase how effectively your body can use the oxygen it takes in which in turn speeds up how fast the muscles can use the oxygen provided, meaning less fatigue. But wait...there’s a catch... Traditional massage therapists gear the session toward relaxation, stress reduction, and pampering. They will use long superficial strokes and gentle kneading of global muscles. Typically this is done in a full body treatment and can be coupled with other relaxing modalities such as the use of hot stones. This type of work focuses more on the superficial tissues and the goal is relaxation. This could easily be performed by anyone fresh out of massage school and it is what most people envision when they think of massage. While this relaxation and rejuvenation has many benefits, this is not the type of massage that will improve your athletic performance. Massage for sport performance is a completely different experience. This type of work cannot be performed by just any massage therapist, as it requires more education. These therapists are musculoskeletal experts and have extensive training in multiple techniques targeted to specific muscle group to achieve a specific goal. The pressure during this type of massage is typically much deeper. It can be considered painful by some but doesn’t have to be. May/June

flraceplace.com
Deep, consistent pressure is intended to relax contracted muscle, increase blood flow to the muscle improving overall nutrition on a cellular level. It includes manual stretching to improve overall flexibility of the tissue. This type of work is geared towards specific outcomes include increased power, increased endurance, decreased pain, and shorter recovery times. However, finding the right massage therapist who uses the right method that works for your body isn’t THE answer. Now I say that very lightly as I believe 100% in massage. It is one of many answers when looking to improve performance and help prevent or manage an injury but it isn’t the only answer. If you pair a professionally designed strength training program with a weekly sports performance specific massage then you’ve got the magic recipe for success. The truth is we only have so many hours in each day and only so much time to dedicate to training but from my professional experience and education, you would see far greater performance gains if you decreased training time and focused more on what could actually be more beneficial than going that extra mile but that’s to be discussed at a different time. __________

NOw LET’S TALk ABOUT RESPECT BETwEEN CYCLISTS
Brian is a practicing attorney, specializing in personal injury cases with a subspecialty representing cyclists in bike/auto accidents. He is a lifelong resident of St. Petersburg, and has been active, as both a participant and race manager for in excess of thirty years. He has worked on all phases of race production, including being one of the early race directors of St. Anthony’s Triathlon; announces many races on the West Coast of Florida, and served the Florida Region on the National Board of Directors for USATriathlon for six years, and is the Past President of that Organization. He has two daughters (Shana Harrington and Brianne Gaal), two son’s in law (Scott Lowery and Marty Gaal) , and one granddaughter (Haileigh Houser) who are active triathletes. He brings this experience to our races as our race announcer.
May/June
Last month, I wrote about respect between cyclists and motorists, and how it has to go both ways. This article deals with the lack of respect I see happening regularly between cyclists. If our behaviors don’t change, it’s only a matter of time before injury results. I will refer to two separate examples of bad cycling behavior I see happening every Saturday morning on the various club rides, but most often by the “better” (read faster) cyclists. Behavior 1: The faster groups on Saturday frequently have to pass individuals or small cycling groups on the road, heading to and from Weedon Island; along first street, 62nd avenue north, through Snell Island, as well as along similar group rides on the south side of town. Common courtesy dictates that as the faster group approaches either a slower individual or group, a verbal warning/communication should occur. Words such as “ON YOUR LEFT” or “RIDERS COMING” are great warnings to make the slower cyclists aware of you. Allowing the same three feet of space when passing that the law requires cars to give us would be a nice bonus as well. I can personally attest to groups suddenly appearing less than two feet away in “train fashion” with absolutely no warning. Common courtesy can go a long way to saving accident and injury. Behavior 2: This applies to our triathlete cyclists; the ones with the aero bars. You are easy to spot; I see you every Saturday. Using the aero bars in a group is DANGEROUS. Let me say that again: Using your aero position in a group ride is DANGEROUS. Even if you think it’s ok as long as you are the front cyclist pulling the train, it’s still DANGEROUS. And it shouldn’t even have to be said, that being on your aero bars in the middle of a pack traveling at twenty five miles an hour or more is DANGEROUS. The only safe place to be on your bars is off the rear of any pack, not leading or in the midst of one. We are now entering our peak riding season; also, for both competitive cyclists and triathletes, our peak competitive season. Please be courteous to those of us less speedy; to those of us who enjoy being able to travel our roads safe from not only cars but also fellow cyclists. The age, gender, and skill sets of we cyclists/ triathletes don’t guarantee common sense or common courtesy. Let’s all make it a practice to talk to each other on the road, to make cycling a cooperative and safe activity for everyone. It’s dangerous enough out there from the motorists, let’s not make it just as dangerous by not showing courtesy to our fellow cyclists. Brian Harrington Past President, USATriathlon Board of Directors Race Announcer Attorney 49

FL RacePlace Magazine Editor Trains with EWOT – Exercise with O2 Therapy On a Pathway to Maximizing Running Potential: Interview with Joe Fernandez Shoshanah Vaughn How were you first introduced to EWOT? Years ago when I was training for the Jacksonville Marathon, I injured my hamstring and was told it would take 2 months to heal, but I only had 3 weeks before my race. Since I needed to speed up my recovery time, I discovered EWOT (Exercise with Oxygen Therapy) from a Sports Physical Therapist.
“You learn to exercise with maximum effort without any tiredness.”
How did you benefit from EWOT? Well, I ran the Jacksonville Marathon with a healed hamstring and ran my fastest time ever. EWOT gave me higher performance levels, quicker recovery, increased strength and endurance, and more energy. That’s great! So, how did you feel immediately after you completed the marathon? Surprisingly refreshed, not tired, and like I was ready for my next hard effort. I have been doing EWOT ever since! You learn to exercise with maximum effort without any tiredness, all while gaining pure oxygen. It’s kinda like feeding your muscles. How often should I do EWOT and how long each time? I did it 3-4 times per week. You warm up for 5 minutes, EWOT is 10 minutes of working hard, and then you cool down for 5 minutes. I had my fastest marathon time after 3 weeks. You can even use EWOT in conjunction with your current training program, so the plan depends on your other program.

EWOT Training Session at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay 813-207-5027
Exercising with Oxygen Therapy aggressively allows you to breathe 60 LPM of pure oxygen during strenuous exercise. It forces oxygen in your system to allow the muscles to keep going. Joe Fernandez (the Editor of Florida RacePlace Magazine) is among many others who benefit from EWOT at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay. In addition to physical performance, EWOT is under research for cancer treatment and anti-aging. Joe continues his EWOT at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay where they aim to treat all patients like a professional athlete. Their approach comes with a sense of urgency in getting patients back on the field in the quickest manner possible. EWOT is one of several ways Dr. Tommy Rhee speeds up his patients’ overall recovery/healing time. 1155 S Dale Mabry Hwy #8 Tampa, FL. 33629 | physicalchiro.com

SWIM-SWIM-SWIM / Pool Swim Fit - OWS Finally, no more trying to decide if today is going to be a strength or cardio day! When you swim, you are constantly moving. All your muscles are engaged. Water is about 700/800 times denser than air, so your muscles are under constant resistance.
Your Body-Mind-Spirit will benefit Low Impact: Swimming is a great workout for injured athletes, who need to take it easy on their joints, but it may also mean more results. Research in the International Journal of Sports Medicine shows swimming is better than rest for exercise recovery or when you want to take it easy. Great for Your Lungs: When your face is under water, your body adapts to use oxygen more efficiently. Plus, it learns to take in more fresh air with every breath, and expel more carbon dioxide with every exhalation. Don’t hold your breath! Question: Do you hold your breath when you run? Or cycle? It helps you to be a Better Runner and Cyclist. By increasing your ability to take in and effectively use oxygen, swimming increases your endurance capacity. Swimming trains your glutes hamstrings, core, and shoulders; all of which are needed for improved running and cycling form and performances. Everybody can swim, Everybody Should Swim: Swimming is without a doubt so good for your mind-body and spirit, stress reliever, stamina producer, strength and endurance developer, smile maker, complements all the other sports, and athletic disciplines. It slashes stress, while exercise-induced endorphins will do wonders for your stress levels. Getting in the water for your workout may have its own special brand of mood-boosting benefits, for your body, helping to bring on feelings of calm. Swimming affects blood pressure, cholesterol levels, cardiovascular performance, central nervous system health, cognitive functioning, muscle mass, and overall happy Health. In a Nutshell! Swimming opens many amazing new experiences and adventures.

Tampa’s Long History of Nude Running When the Caliente Resort hosts the eighth-annual Caliente Bare Dare 5K on Sunday, May 7, it will mark the latest chapter in Tampa Bay’s long history of clothing-optional races. More than 400 runners are expected to converge on Caliente in Pasco County for what has become the largest clothing-optional race in North America, an event that since 2012 has determined the National Championship of Nude Running. Many runners have attended the Caliente Bare Dare 5K as a one-and-done, bucket-list race only to return again after enjoying the all-day, post-race party at Caliente, which features seven swimming pools, multiple bars, restaurant, and an upscale clubhouse. The race has drawn runners from an average of 25 states over the last three years. Though runners from all levels participate, the course-record times (15:49 male, 17:53 female) are comparable to those of much larger events.
Thanksgiving. More recently, the clothing-optional resort has held occasional 5K races at various times of the year. In 2011, the Cypress Cove nudist resort in Kissimmee launched the “Streak the Cove 5K,” which has attracted between 150 and 200 runners annually to the Orlando area resort. But it’s the Caliente Bare Dare 5K, which debuted a year earlier in 2010 that has become the signature event on the nude racing calendar. Race director Pete Williams, a longtime endurance sports athlete and journalist, believed that by holding a clothing-optional race at the upscale Caliente Resort and marketing it to the mainstream running community, he could draw a larger crowd than typical nudist club races. Many runners have remarked that they’ve set personal 5K records by competing at Caliente, where the course takes runners on paths along lakes and through the resort’s upscale residential area. All but a 50-yard grassy section is on asphalt. Unlike most running events, where runners depart shortly after the race or the awards ceremony, most runners stay all day since admission to Caliente is included with the race entry fee, making the event one of the best values in endurance sports. Last year, Williams replaced the traditional race T-shirt with a 30x60 beach towel and plans to do so again this year. “You don’t need a T-shirt at a nudist resort; you need a towel,” Williams said. “It was really cool to look around the Caliente pool two hours after the race and see hundreds of people lounging on yellow Caliente Bare Dare 5K race towels.” Though photography and video is prohibited at the race for obvious privacy reasons, several journalists have participated in the event and written about their experiences. Jessica Sebor, the editor of Women’s Running magazine, became the inaugural female winner of the National Championship of Nude Running in 2012 and wrote about the experience. “I know it’s going to take more than one Sunday morning to cure my self-consciousness,” she wrote about running nude. “But running the Bare Dare did teach me this: If you don’t challenge yourself, you will never have the chance to be crowned a champion.”
Nude running in Central Florida began in 1993 when the Lake Como nudist resort, also in Pasco County, debuted the “Dare to Go Bare 5K.” Sabrina Vizzari, the club’s 20-year-old activities director at the time, wanted an event similar to those she had seen while living in Washington state. The Lake Como event grew gradually and in 1998 drew more than 300 runners due to a marketing partnership with Tampa’s news radio 970 AM, which re-branded itself for the week leading up to the event as “Nude Radio 970.” The race attracts a smaller field these days (135 last year), but still boasts a scenic course on both asphalt and trails. This year’s event, the 25th annual, takes place on April 9. Paradise Lakes, located adjacent to Lake Como along US 41 in Lutz, for years held a 5K the weekend before

The Importance of Fit I am questioned regularly about the difference between the fit of a tri bike and a road bike. Many of these questions arise from athletes who have purchased tri bikes and have not seen a marked improvement in their speed or overall efficiency.
The biggest difference between a road and a true tri bike is the angle of the seat tube. Most road bikes have a 73-75 degree seat tube angle. They are set that way to allow better acceleration, sprinting and climbing. A true tri bike has a steeper seat angle- typically 78 – 80 degrees. This positions the rider farther forward on the bike, which will result in a higher consistent top end speed with less effort. It is the movement forward that is the biggest difference and benefit of the tri bike geometry. Aerodynamics has a small benefit for a true tri bike, but if only aerodynamics were responsible for the increased speed on a tri bike, we could all be simply riding aero road bikes with clip on aero bars.
Why does the steeper seat tube angle of a tri bike make the rider faster? This works through three different mechanisms. First, when the rider is further forward, his or her weight is distributed more evenly on the bike. This creates more weight on the front wheel, which allows it to participate more in the forward movement of the bicycle when power is applied to the pedals. Second, the steeper seat tube angle results in greater activation of the quadriceps, which are the largest and strongest muscles in the leg. Third, it has been proven that a forward seat tube angle provides an easier transition from the bike to the run. Cycling muscle movement in a forward position is more similar to running movement than is the position of a road bike, which thus results in less muscle change and adaptation between the two disciplines.
With this in mind, it is imperative that a tri bike be set up properly to take advantage of the benefits this style of bike has to offer. With a few thousand fits under my belt, I frequently come across triathlon bikes with the saddles pushed way back and dangerously high. Saddles can easily be pushed back far enough to simulate a road bike, but if this is done, the athlete will gain absolutely no benefits from the tri bike. I frequently see a properly fit tri bike perform at least 1 – 2 mph faster than a road bike of the same level, if not more.
The bottom line is FIT, FIT, FIT! Make sure the professional who is fitting your bicycle has proper knowledge and experience with tri bike positioning. Do not try it on your own or use a fitter who has not worked extensively with tri bikes. A properly fit bike will give you more speed, more comfort and fewer chances of injury. With proper fit, you will see huge improvements in your cycling.

TRIATHLON TRAINING
Written by USAT Triathlon Coach Celia Dubey Chargers vs Drainers Energy! Energy is all we are. Albert Einstein proved this several decades ago. We harness energy. We are made of protons and neutrons. We exist to emit energy on a vibration, a frequency. We are not our bodies. It is scientifically proven that every 7 years every single cell that makes up every tissue that makes up every organ, every bone, & every nerve in our body is different. So yes every 7 years our physical form (our body) is completely different. Our body is made of living matter. Matter is energy. So this means we are energy & everything around us is energy. Everything around us is living. Everything is made of protons holding a positive charge & neutrons carrying a negative drain. With in every interaction there is an exchange of energy. There is either a charge of energy or a drain of energy. Within every interaction between people, between man & animal, between man & nature, there is an exchange of energy. It's either a positive charge providing one with energy or it's a negative interaction draining one of energy. It's either a gain of energy or a loss of energy. We exist to emit energy on a vibration, a frequency. This can be between you & a person or between you and an animal or between you & the ocean or between you and a tree. Have you ever been driving when you come to a bridge across a vast body of water & all of the sudden you feel a calming sense come over you? Or you are out for a walk and you look up at a tree and you feel this a charge of strength. This is the process of energy being exchanged. That ocean or tree is actually charging you. It's most obvious with in our human interaction. Have you ever had a conversation with someone and all they do is complain & express how unhappy they are. You come away from that conversation tired, feeling down, & literally drained of your own energy. Have you ever had a conversation with someone in which you come away from the conversation feeling energized, charged of energy, ready to go & accomplish a big task? This is often evident when a seasoned coach gives his team that is losing at half time a pep talk and they come out & play as a completely different team making a come back that goes down in history. Story--- Grocery store Think about the last time you were in the grocery store & you recognized someone you know from across the store. Think about the time you deliberately went out of your way to avoid that person. You remember. Picture that person. Think about the time you avoided that drainer. Your desire to avoid that drainer was so strong you completely stayed out of the freezer section because that is where the drainer was & you had to make another trip back to the store for that ice cream you wanted. Now think about that person are they a person that complains a lot, gossips, delivers bad news often, never laughs, or seems happy? Now think about the time you recognized someone across the grocery store & you went out of your way to go find them so you can say “hi” to that charger. You remember. Picture that person. Think about that person. They are a charger. Do they seem happy? Do they smile and laugh often? Does it seem like they are always in a good mood? And think about it - how did you feel after you went and said hi. Did you feel happy? Were you glad you ran into them? Did you walk away from that interaction feeling more energetic, charged? So let's dare to ask ourselves this brave question. What kind of person am I? Am I that person that people seek to have a conversation with? Or am I that person people want to avoid? Am I a charger? Or am I a drainer? Be brave - ask yourself. What kind of person do I want to be? Do I want to be that person that people seek? Do I want to the a person in the grocery store that someone rushes over excitedly to say hi to? Or do I want to be a person in the grocery store that someone hides from and avoids? Think about relationships you have with certain people. The people that once you interact with -you literally feel a surge of energy. Think about the people, that you after you spend time with them, you feel inspired. Think about the people you laugh with often and how you leave that interaction with more energy. You literally feel charged after being with them. It is possible to live a life on full charge at all times. We all have ebbs and flows to some degree. Perhaps you are going through a challenging time & you need some sage advice from a friend. You may have to lay it all out there & divulge all the negative details for your friend so they can advise you on how to handle the situation. At times we play different roles throughout our life. For example if you are physically ill and incapable of caring for yourself adequately you may have to rely on someone else for your care. You may think of yourself as a drain in those
flraceplace.com

instances but it's not true. We can always be chargers. When I first wrote this piece I attempted to define the moments in life in which being a drain serves a good purpose, or when being a drain will be in one's best interest. But with each one I attempted I could not find the positive out of it. And that is why there is absolutely no positive to being negative. Positive and negative are polar opposites in every way. So there you have it there is no positive to being negative. Now don't be so hard on yourself & expect to be positive about everything overnight. There may be some times in which you will slip into the negative. There may be some relationships you have where some times you feel you are the drainer or at times you are feeling drained. The key is to recognize it & quickly shift your charge to a positive one. The easiest way to do that is to start with gratitude. Yup accept a negative situation, Spiritual teacher Eckart Tolle even teaches to "accept every moment, with enthusiasm & enjoyment." When I find myself unhappy with a situation, or complaining about something, I immediately shift my focus to one of gratitude. For example I often find myself cold in restaurants so rather than be unhappy about being cold I simply put on a jacket & I then take a moment to be thankful for that jacket I have. If I don't have a jacket handy I order a hot herbal tea & take a moment to be grateful for the ability to order that hot tea. Or I simply leave & find myself thankful for the ability to get up and walk out. Let's really pile it on. It's freezing cold, I have no jacket, they don't have tea, & I am obligated to stay for some inconvenient reason, then I simply am thankful that in the physiological effect of being cold allows my body to burn more calories so can now order that dessert I was planning on skipping. You get the point. As long as you have your breath there is always something to be grateful about. That breathe is a gift we can not take for granted and must always be grateful for All of us have heard the saying "you get what you give". The saying is so popular for a very good reason. It's true. The more you charge the more energy you will generate. Don't think you will give all your energy away and be left drained without any energy. It does not work that way. It's simple, the more energy you put out the more energy your body will produce. At the same time we do need to take care of our selves, specifically our bodies so that we are healthy and have the ability to produce energy. We need to be responsible in knowing what it takes to charge us. Some of us are extroverts & our energy comes from interaction with other people or our interaction with nature or our interaction with animals like your pet. So it's imperative you seek the interaction that will charge you. Some of us are introverts and our energy comes from within, in which you need to know how to pull that energy from with in. What is it that energizes you? Is it meditation? Is it painting, sculpting, wood working? Is it exercise? Is it reading? Is it sleep? It's important we identify those sources of energy for us. We need to seek those people in our lives that charge us, it's important we regularly participate in those activities that charge us. When we do this we will be happier healthier & able to charge the world & be the source of energy that others will seek.
* Now Put Into Practice * Now make a list of those individuals that charge you.... Now make a list of those activities that you do that charge you..,.. Finally make a list of activities you can do to charge others‌..
