Register Now For 9th Richard’s Annual Father’s Day Fundraiser Registration is now open for the 9th annual Richard’s Father’s Day Walk and Jog on June 19 at Ulele restaurant in Tampa Heights. The event benefits Moffitt Cancer Center. Join Ulele owner Richard Gonzmart, fourth generation caretaker of the Columbia Restaurant Group, along with WWE Global Ambassador Titus O’Neil and Ann Kelly of 105.5 FM WDUV, as well as mascots and cheerleaders from your favorite pro sports teams at 8 a.m. on Father’s Day. This family-friendly, non-timed event on the beautiful Tampa Riverwalk begins at and returns to Ulele restaurant in Tampa Heights. Run or walk at your own pace and your own distance … 1 mile, 3.1 miles or a custom distance. We encourage parents to bring their children and stroll together. The work Moffitt does in Tampa is lifesaving and life changing. They employ nationally recognized specialists — the best in their fields dedicated to a cure. The only finish line that matters is finding a cure for cancer, step by step. The event so far has raised more than $750,000 for Moffitt. As always, the Gonzmart Family Foundation pays every expense, and donates all sponsorship and registration fees. Cost: $30 online registration in advance, $35 day of the event, and includes a Dri-Fit event shirt. The event is free for children under 12. For more information or to register, go to https://tinyurl.com/RichardsFathersDay2022

SWIM-RUN-SWIM-RUN-SWIM-RUN For many years swim-run “bricks”, were missing from a routine training. In 1996 I organized a run-swim event back in Caracas. 100 meters in a 50 meters pool, doing the snake technique swim immediately followed by a 400 meters run (around the track ) each athlete needed to do this 8 times, super demanding, but refreshing at the same time. Many races these days—especially those that feature ocean swims—require athletes to make long runs to transition after exiting the water. These transitions seem almost like endurance events by themselves. Local events like Ft De Soto, and St Anthony’s Triathlon, after each swim, athletes need to run between ¼ up to ½ mile to Transition 1, training your body to run when it’s already sputtering and gasping for air can help you make those runs to transition less daunting and painful. Being able to run better out of the water can help shave time off your T1 as well. The new Aqua-bike events are blooming all over the country, and Swim-Runs races are also starting to come back. Stay tuned for our local upcoming races, including OWS, and Swim-Runs. Swim-run training helps your body learn to quickly adapt from the horizontal to the vertical body position. If running right out of the pool is simply not possible, there is another way to replicate the feeling. Swim 200 meters/yards, get out of the pool and do 10 squats, 10 lunges, 5 burpees on the deck, jump back into the water and repeat 3 to 5 more times. If you’re looking to drop your swim to bike transition times—as well as feel a bit stronger at the start of the bike leg—add swim-run workouts to your training to help you run stronger out of the water. You can check our training and events schedule at: www.sunshineopenwater.com and www.owsleo.com

This is a theme I’ve written about before; but bears repeating on a regular basis. When you are spending several hours every week on your bicycle, there are givens you should never avoid: wearing a state of the art helmet; having strobe lights on both front and rear; day or night; pay attention to how traffic laws apply to cyclists; and taking care to make sure you have ALL the appropriate auto coverages. Why? Because if while riding your bike you are struck by a motor vehicle, your auto insurance plays an important part of providing you coverage for the negligent driver who strikes/injures you What’s the single most important coverage you MUST have? The coverage that’s optional? The coverage most insurance companies downplay, because they wouldn’t sell it if they weren’t required by law? It’s UM/UIM (uninsured and underinsured coverage). Unfortunately, if, as in many cases, the driver hits, and runs, you can’t make a liability claim against the phantom driver. But your UM/UIM coverage acts as liability coverage for the at fault driver, even if he can’t be identified. The best coverage amount you should have? As much as your budget allows. One unique feature of UM is you can “stack” coverages when you have multiple vehicles on your insurance. For example, if you have two cars, with 100/300 liability coverage, you can purchase stacked UM, which would give you 200/600 UM/UIM coverage. What’s UIM? If, for example, the at fault driver only has $10,000 liability coverage, and you have stacked UM of 100/300 with two cars, you would collect the first $10,000 from the at fault driver, but still have an additional $200,000 from your underinsured coverage available if the value of your injuries exceeded the $10,000 from the negligent driver. The important fact to know and understand is if you are struck by a motor vehicle while riding, you are likely to sustain more serious injuries than if in your car. Medical care is expensive. DON’T DEPEND ON THE IRRESPONSIBLE DRIVER TO BE RESPONSIBLE ABOUT HAVING HIGH LIABILITY LIMITS TO PROTECT YOU. PROTECT YOURSELF! Stay safe out there. Brian Harrington Past President, USATriathlon Board of Directors Race Announcer Attorney 29

Multi‐Sport Climate 2022 2019‐2021 have been challenging years for athletics and multi‐sport. The COVID outbreak and follow up mandates squashed a majority of the events and also group training opportunities. Many of us not only couldn’t race and train, but also lost motivation throughout the crisis. BUT THE GOOD NEWS!! It looks like 2022 is back to full on racing. Most all mandates have been lifted and the majority of the races are back on the schedule! What does that mean for us? First, no excuses! Time to jump back into a routine of training and racing. Group activities are back! Races are back! How do I do that? Make a plan. Pick those races and distances you want to compete in. I say again, make a plan. Set training schedules. Take advantage of triathlon teams that have group sessions and workouts. Utilize masters swim programs. Masters swims are professionally coached and organized. To be a better swimming triathlete you need to Swim Like A Swimmer! Not just junk mileage. A masters swim program will push you as you will be paired up with like athletes the same speeds and abilities. Nothing better than being pushed! Find open training opportunities throughout your area. Organized runs, rides and open water swims. There are many opportunities out there that do not charge. Just come and participate. Find a training partner. Someone to make you accountable. Training with a buddy or group is not only more motivating but less likely to blow off. Want to get serious? Hire a coach. There are many great certified multi‐sport, running, cycling and swimming coaches available. Hint – Interview a few. Look for that right fit for you. Figure in your goals, budget and location to choose the coach that is best for you! Coaches can help you do your first 5k, first Triathlon, first Ironman or help bring you to the level of qualifying for championships. Choose wisely and look for that perfect fit. Second, be realistic. Rome wasn’t built or rebuilt in a day! If the pandemic has slowed or stopped your training it will take time to bring you back up to the level of your true abilities. Be careful and do what you can to stay injury free. A typical scenario is an athlete jumps in too quickly with too much mileage and speed and ends up on the sidelines with injury. You have defeated your purpose. Train wisely and take this year ads a rebuild year. Third, choose races wisely. There are many opportunities almost every weekend to race. Choose the races that fit you. Look at reviews. Also make them fun! Choose new races. Keep it fresh. Open your horizons on new destinations, distance and even new disciplines. I will be going deeper into this in next month’s article. Lastly, HAVE FUN! We are back! Enjoy what great fitness has to offer. Exercising helps control weight, (along with proper diet) helps with sleep and most importantly improves health. SO, Get out there and as a big shoe company says “JUST DO IT!”

IMPROPER FOOTWEAR - THE CAUSE OF MOST RUNNING PAIN Up to 85% of all runners each year experience pain or injury intense enough to cause them to stop running for a period of time. Acute injuries would be the smaller percentage of this group. These would include events such as stepping in a hole, falling off a curb, tripping on a crack in the sidewalk, avoiding a motor vehicle, etc. – anything that is caused by an external force or action. The largest percentage of pain or injury though is what we term “overuse”. Most believe that overuse pain or injury is inevitable. When you perform a repetitive movement enough times, it should be expected. This belief has dramatically shortened many runners’ careers by years. How wrong it is! Our body is meant to last a lifetime…as long as it is used properly. Properly, means that as your joints move, they stay in their aligned preferred path of movement, the way they were designed to move. If they are subject to repetitive twisting and turning or thrown off-track, wear begins to occur in areas of the joints that are not designed to take it. Pain is the wakeup call to do something about it, or suffer the consequences of chronic pain, injury and even arthritis later in life. Fortunately, there are shoes, socks and foot supports, the combination of which, when properly fit, can eliminate almost all “overuse” pain, from toe to lower back. Do not ignore any pain that persists for a week or more. Even if it eventually goes away before changing anything, (most say “I just ran through it”) your body may have created a compensation that will eventually come back or even show up in another area. If you have pain, don’t stay too attached to your shoes. They are probably the culprit, unless of course they are too short or narrow. A shoe change is probably warranted if the wear under your forefoot is either towards the inside or outside and not right down the middle. Or, you get blisters or have any running-related pain at all. But don’t just stop with your shoes. Padded socks will help protect skin and fat pad tissues but are an even more important aid for pressure relief and shoe fit. And the final essential ingredients to a long and healthy running career are foot supports, often called orthotics. They are shaped to closely match the contours of the bottom of the feet, helping shoes to be even more custom and appropriately functional. Orthotics are also your first remedy for all too common plantar fasciitis. There are products out there that can potentially alleviate or greatly reduce your running pain and extend your career almost as long as you would want. Do your own research and find a good running store that understands your issues and helps solve them. Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, CPED, BOCPED, ACSM flraceplace.com

10 Daily TIPS to Live Healthy Grade yourself
0‐100%
I have created this list of 10 daily minimums for minimal health. Please keep in mind these are MINIMUMS. We can always do better to reach optimal health. I want to emphasize if we meet ALL these daily minimum requirements then we will be well on our way to optimal health. As you read the list, give yourself a point for each one that you consistently meet daily. If you earn 10 then that is 100% and you are an A student. If you only reach 7 out of 10 then that is 70%, with a grade of C. So what kind of grade do you want to earn when it comes to your health? Do you want to be an A student, an average student, or a failing student when it comes to your health?
HEALTH DAYS 1. HOUR every hour get up and move for 5 minutes. 2. EAT raw fruits & veggies. 4 fist size fruits & 5 fist size raw veggies every day. 3. ATTITUDE of gratitude. Take a deep breathe in through your nose and out your nose and think of one thing you are grateful for. 4. LAUGH out LOUD. Don’t take things so seriously including yourself. Laugh at yourself 5. THINK Read for 10 minutes every day or solve a puzzle, sudoku, or problem 6. HYDRATE Drink your body weight in ounces of water a day. Drink 50% ~100% of your body weight in ounces daily. Do if you weight 100lbs drink 50‐100 ounces of water a day 7. DAYLIGHT ‐ Get outside 10 minutes. Vitamin D (from the sun) is essential for one’s mood and proper nutrient absorption. Oxygen from trees is the cleanest source o2. 8. 8‐ Sleep 8 hours. 9. YAY I get to exercise for 30 minutes every day. 10. SOCIALIZE ‐interact with a minimum of three people that you do not live with daily. 1. Move. Every hour stand up & move for 5 minutes. No matter how active you are in the morning if you spend the rest of your day sitting in front of a computer then this can be devasting to healthy circulation that your body needs. Good circulation is key so that oxygen is delivered to all your cells, muscles, tissues, and organs. Standing up and moving is essential to maintain healthy circulation. 2. Eat FOUR fist size servings of RAW fruits AND FIVE fist size servings of RAW veggies a day. Enzymes, nutrients, and vitamins help you rebuild cells you are damaging daily. The only source of vitamins, nutrients, and enzymes is in raw food. If you cook anything over 118 degrees then you are cooking the enzymes, nutrients, and vitamins out of the food. By eating 4 raw fruits AND 5 raw veggies you will also meet your daily minimum requirement of fiber. Fiber is essential to maintain a healthy body weight by helping you eliminate waste in your body. Keep in mind after the food

you eat has gone through your intestines and sits in the colon it is now toxic to your body. So, the longer your waste sits in your colon the more toxins are released in your blood stream and organs. Fiber helps you eliminate that waste. 3. An attitude of gratitude is paramount to our happiness, being positive, and having sound mental health. Take time to take a deep breath and be grateful for at least one thing each day. 4. Laugh out loud at least once daily! Laughing is a great stress relief. Laugh at yourself. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Choose happy positive lighthearted content to read, listen to, or watch on tv. Watch a comedy on TV over the news or a violent drama. I think we can all agree that we have only one opportunity to live our best life and that our happiness is paramount. 5. Think. Your brain is a muscle and like all muscles if you do not use it, you lose it. We need our synapses to fire, in an effort to maintain healthy cognitive functions. Read 10 minutes a day (try to read positive enriching content and stay away from the news) or learn something new every day (yes this counts) or solve a problem, puzzle, crossword, or sudoku. 6. Hydrate. Drinking water is key to maintain a healthy balance of electrolytes for normal organic function and circulation. To avoid dehydration, where your electrolytes are depleted and the consistency of your blood becomes viscous making it harder to pump blood through your body to all your muscles and organs, you must drink enough water. Drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water daily. If you weigh 150 lbs then drink 75 ounces of water daily. If you live in a hot humid climate like we do, then drinking 75% of your body weight is better. And if you are highly active and live in a hot humid climate then you should drink equal to your body weight in ounces daily. So, if you weigh 150 lbs you should aim to drink 150 ounces of water daily. 7. Get outside for at least 10 minutes every day. Get out in nature and breathe fresh air. Trees are the source of oxygen and fresh air is the best source of oxygen. Vitamin D (from the sun) is essential for one’s mood and proper nutrient absorption. The sun is the source of all energy so get outside and enjoy it. If you ever find yourself needing clarity or having a hard time in making a decision, go outside take a deep breath, and you will see the best choice will be clearer. 8. Sleep 8 hours a day. Sleep is vital to maintain a healthy endocrine system, so your hormones are in check. If your hormones are not in check and your cortisol levels are high, then you are stressing your body and stress has a detrimental response on the physiology of your body. When your body is stressed your arteries, capillaries, & veins are constricted making it harder to transport oxygen to all your organs including your brain keeping you from thinking clearly. Ideally, it’s best to sleep 8 hours at night so if you have to nap to add up to 8 solid hours per day then that is ok. 9. Yay I get to Exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes daily. Exercise is essential for countless reasons. Being sedentary is dangerous. We live very comfortable lives and none of us are working to live. None of us are growing our own food, hunting, or gathering our own food or running from prey. We must be active every day to promote healthy circulation. Elevating your heart rate to 75% of your maximum effort helps pump blood which carries oxygen to all your vital organs for healthy organic functions. For exercise to count, you should be working at an intensity of 75% of your perceived maximum exertion. You should be working so you are sweating because the main benefit of sweating is that you rid your body of toxins. So, if you can go run errands after you exercise without taking a shower and you are not embarrassed at how sweaty you are then that does not count as exercise. 10. Socialize. As human beings we have a strong need to connect with others and have a sense of belonging. Healthy relationships are a huge mood booster and help keep our hormone levels healthy. Interact in person with at least 3 people that you do not live with every day for at least 1 minute per person. Do your best to reach out and interact with people you find to be positive and are enriching relationships. Social media and texts do not count. Phone calls, zooms, & face times can count. But in person human contact is best. Written by USAT Coach Celia Dubey CoachCeliaDubey@gmail.com
