2 DAYS OF RUNNING FRIDAY & SAT. EXPO
November/December
TWENTY AND COUNTING T
he Running Center is proud to be celebrating 20 years of serving the runners, walkers and triathletes of Tampa Bay.We have had the pleasure of having NFL football stars, NFL coaches and authors, along with professional baseball players, patronize our store. We have had famous Army Generals, Olympians and world class athletes purchase merchandise from us. However, I must say that the most important people who come into our store are the everyday runners or walkers who are out there just trying to stay fit. Since we opened The Running Center in 1999, with the hope of maintaining a quality retail store specializing in serving the runners of Tampa, we have found it is has become much more than that. We have had the gratification of working with and continuing to work with great employees. Over the years, our employees have become state champion runners, coaches who have won state championships in cross country and track, military officers, medical students, and top local athletes. We have sponsored countless events from road races to triathlons to walking events. We have also established a shoe collection service for the
Running Center
homeless and have collected thousands of pairs of shoes over the years. We have proudly donated and helped to raise thousands of dollars for local charities. We have presented information about the sport of running through numerous talks, clinics, health fairs, published articles, email blasts and Facebook entries. We want to express heartfelt thanks to the thousands of loyal customers, many who have become our friends and running partners, for their continued patronage. We must also count our blessings for the many physical therapists, massage therapists, podiatrists and medical doctors who have recommended our store to their patients. We also must congratulate the fine companies we have represented over the years for continuously improving their products. We try to continually educate ourselves on the sport of running and have always chosen products to sell that we felt are the best in quality and function for our customers, rather than only a passing fad. We are looking forward to “Year Twenty one” with a goal of not only continuing to maintain our successful small business, but of making it better and serving our running community with innovative products, updated information, and superior service. As any runner knows, an interruption in training can be a major set-back. Thank goodness I turned to Karen for help. In a single therapy session, she was able to not only alleviate the pain, it was as if the injury never occurred." —Karen Collins, Licensed Massage Therapist

Swim Like A Swimmer I have seen the pattern within the last decade of triathletes doing the majority of their swim training in open water. They are under the impression the race is in open water so that’s where they should be training. But the truth is to become a better swimmer you must train like a swimmer. Olympic Open Water swimmers do the majority of their training in group situations in a pool setting, with a coach directing them to work on form and tempo. Swimming is the only of the three disciplines that relies almost completely on proper technique. In the water, the objective is to generate propulsion while reducing drag. There are multiple aspects in play at the same time so it is close to impossible to self-teach or self-coach proper technique. Having a professional coach watching over, analyzing and correcting your stroke is the key to faster times. Michael Phelps won more Olympic gold medals than anyone else, and he still relied on his swim coach. So where do you start? In the pool! If the majority of your swims are in open water, you are training where no one can see what you are doing, right or wrong, possibly reinforcing bad habits which directly affect speed and efficiency. Training in a pool with a coach that provides feedback and corrections is critical to achieve efficiency and strength. One on one coaching is of course the fastest way to improve swimming technique, but training with a local masters swim program with a certified coach can is an economical alternative. This group setting affords you the opportunity to swim and compete with other swimmers. Properly organized swim workouts include a warm-up, technique drills, speed/distance work and a cool down. You should find a local masters swim program that fits your schedule, with an active coach that makes corrections as well as provides the motivation to make the workouts fun. Should you ditch open water swimming all together? Absolutely not! There are skills that are only learned and perfected in open water. Drafting, sighting, swimming in crowds, swimming in rough water, dolphin diving, wetsuit swimming and others are only achieved properly in open water. But without basic swimming skills these open water techniques are harder and less effective. A great way to perfect these skills are clinics and specific training. (Be looking for the P6 Open Water Series again this summer) To dispel another myth – While the swim is the shortest portion of a triathlon it does need the attention the other disciplines need. A confident and well-trained swimming triathlete has many definite advantages. The most obvious is the overall aerobic fitness level. Swimming helps increase oxygen intake which transfers over to the bike and run. A proficient swimmer uses much less energy, which will carry over to the bike in a race. After proper training, anxiety levels will reduce, wasting less energy at the beginning of the race. And lastly, swimming can be fun! Masters swimming is a great opportunity to train with others whereby you can encourage each other on a regular basis to improve. So get out and Swim Like A Swimmer! Outrival Racing Sarasota: Eric Kahl has been competing in triathlons and endurance sports since the mid 90’s and coaching endurance athletes for over a decade. Eric has raced in all types of endurance events, from sprint distance to multiple IRONMAN events and multi-day Adventure races. In addition to his extensive racing experience, Eric has coached hundreds of athletes from first-timers to multiple World Championship qualifiers in both 70.3 and 140.6 distances. Eric loves to coach athletes who have a passion for their sport and he believes that no two athletes will ever get the same results by following the same program. The foundation for his coaching is based upon three essential key points: an individualized approach to maximize athlete’s ability, consistency and the right mental attitude. Jackie has been coaching triathlon for the past 13 years. She is a full-time coach with QT2 Systems/OutRival Racing and works with athletes at all levels. In additon to her coaching duties she is the Team Manager and responsible for educating new coaches to the QT2 methodologies. Jackie is married, with three children (two of which are now in college.) This gives her experience and understanding in helping her athletes discover the importance of time management, goal setting, and balancing family life with training. She teaches her athletes that with the right mental attitude, commitment and patience, anything is possible. flraceplace.com

Here we are with the Holidays almost upon us. I have some suggestions for great Holiday gifts for our cycling and triathlete friends. 1. New helmet! We all wear our helmets longer that we should; there’s nothing like a new shiny helmet to fire you up for a ride. Well, maybe a new shiny bike is better, but not going to that price range. There is exciting new technology to better protect your head and brain in the event of a crash. Do your homework, and get one that not only looks good, but can save your cognitive skills. 2. New strobe lights front and rear. I see way too many riders during daylight with lights not being used. People!! We are next to invisible to drivers, day or night. Get the best brightest strobe lights you can buy, and use them ALL the time. Most are now rechargeable, and some, like the Fly6 and Fly12, are combination lights and video. Which leads me to my next gift: 3. Video cameras front and rear. There are several models to choose from. While I hope neither you nor I ever need the videos, they are game savers if you are struck by a vehicle in proving you really weren’t wandering all over the road, or making sudden suicide like turns in front of the totally innocent (and not texting) driver. The video can save you thousands, and cost only a few hundred. See my note in number 2 above about combination products giving you both better visibility, and better proof you were riding lawfully in one package. 4. Some type of mirror. I know, you don’t want to look like a dork; but, I decided long ago, especially if group riding with inexperienced group riders that knowing what’s going on around you can save your skin and your bike. I prefer the mirror that goes where the bar end plug is located; others like other styles, even tiny ones that stick onto the inside of your sunglasses. Pick one, but use one. 5. Pay for a good bicycle tune up to start the new year in with. I’m constantly amazed at the deplorable condition we (yes, I’m guilty too!) allow our bikes to get into. They need care, our bike’s are our therapy and joy! TAKE CARE OF THEM!! Any of our many bicycle/triathlon shops have a myriad of options for holiday gifts. Shop and spend there instead of on line; support our local businesses who sponsor our rides and events. Haven’t seen Amazon sponsoring any lately, have you?? Have a great year end, and get ready for the new, safer year of riding with some of the suggestions listed above. Be safe out there. Brian Harrington Past President, USATriathlon Board of Directors Race Announcer Attorney 53

Shhh! Don’t tell anyone the secret of my faster race times! Meilus Muscular Therapy is unlike any previous therapy available. We analyze patients using an engineering approach to determine the source of pain; non-invasive robotic therapy is then used to make corrections. The musculoskeletal system is a series of cables (muscles) working levers (bones). We look at how one part of the body affects another, and then show how the therapy will help you. We will even show you how to treat yourself at home! Waste build-up in the muscles causes adhesions, or knots to form. Stretching beyond the knot will tear and injure the muscle. The therapeutic robot disperses the knot, lengthening the muscle without injury. Therbo® is an intelligent therapeutic robot that knows how to treat your muscle using precise, gentle pressure and can: *Make a change in your pain level in one visit without drugs, herbs,
ultrasound, heat or magnets
*Treat the source, not the symptom – the area of treatment is frequently not the site of your pain
Immediately: *Improve your gait speed *Increase your stride length *Increase your breathing capacity *Help prevent side stitches *Improve your running technique
Dramatic changes can be made in one visit!
Call today to schedule an appointment or to request a free consultation. Let us help you enjoy life with less pain and renewed energy!

Offseason Reflect & Recharge It’s now the offseason and time to reflect, assess, enjoy your successes, & recharge physically & mentally. Life balance is key. Be mindful of the balance between your dedication to the pursuit of your fitness goals & time spent with family, friends, & loved ones that don't participate in your passion for swimming biking and or running. Your family will not remember your USAT ranking, whether you placed in the 5K, or your splits. Hell, Joel thinks I am the world champion every year even when I don't go to worlds and my parents still think I run "maratones" (marathons said in a strong Spanish accent) every weekend. Your family will remember the quality time you spent with them. They will remember you being there for life celebrations and holidays. We spend hours away from home most weekend mornings and even with our Monday - Friday training so be mindful of the balance to make time to do what THEY enjoy. Make an effort this offseason to plan a special trip and/or event for them or declare a national day to do what it is they enjoy. Time to reflect and asses your past season. During your downtime, please take a few minutes to reflect on what you learned about yourself this past season. Your training and racing takes a lot of your time, mental energy, financial resources, and focus. I will include a few thought provoking questions to get you thinking. Evaluate your season experience so you can optimize your next season. Take a few minutes to look at these questions and respond genuinely........ GOALS & RESULTS 1.Did I reach my goals? It’s a simple yes or no for each goal. Go down the list. Gosh I hope you recorded
quantitative goals & track your progress. (If not please make it a written goal for next season to record your quantitative goals and track your progress) And if you did, then now is the time to celebrate those successes and THANK the individuals that helped you achieve them. I’m serious, write a heart felt thank you, send a card, or text. No matter who it is and no matter the capacity in which they helped you, thank them genuinely. 2. Have I celebrated my successes? 3. How have I celebrated my successes? 4. If I missed any goals, what kept me from accomplishing my goals? 5. Should I adjust that goal for next season or what can I do differently next season so I reach that goal? (or What goals do I have for next season? If they are the same what could I do differently to reach it?) For #6-8, consider mental and physical 6. What are my strengths? 7. What are my weaknesses? 8. What can I implement to address my weakness? If you have identified a weakness, NOW is the time to step back
in volume and intensity and focus on technique and form. This is a great time to secure the services of a professional coach. Yes, I am happy to help. Email me

TRAINING 1. Do I enjoy training? 2. Do I enjoy training solo? 3. Do I enjoy training with others? 4. What can I do to I enjoy training more? 5. What do I like most about training? 6. What are my favorite workouts? & Why? 7. What are my least favorite workouts and what can I do so I can enjoy them? 8. Did I get injured this season? 9. What did I learn in an effort to avoid injury in the future? 10. What have I implemented to avoid injury? 11. Oh Gosh, am I still injured? Do you have a nagging injury or pain? Now is the time to see a doctor. 12. Have I rested & recovered adequately? This is a serious question. If it’s been more than two weeks and you
have not been in the pool, on your bike and or put on your running shoes then that is not good. If that much time has passed and you have not partaken in your “hobby” the activity you CHOOSE to do for FUN then that is a sign you are burnt out or maybe you are not going about this the right way or your mindset is not good. Hmmm, what can you do so you do not get burnt out again? And what can you do now to ignite the flame? RACING 1.Do I log my race results and record notes about the race, including what I did well and not so well so I can refer to for next season? If no, then create a “Race Results” spreadsheet” with columns including Date, Event Title,
Distance, Splits, Results, Course (describe the course with any notes to help you in case you race it again. Include any tips on what you can do to prepare for that course if you race it in the future) Weather, Apparel & Equipment – (Record what you wore & or used and how it affected your race performance). Fuel – (detail what, how much, and when you ate and drank & how each worked so you know for next time to do it again or not). 2.What races did I enjoy and will I want to do again next season? Warning Shameless plug. I hope you raced the
Tarpon Tri, Aqua Bike or Duathlon. Our 2020 date is September 19th2020 Have I considered doing a destination race? It’s a great way to see another city, travel with friends and simply change things up to keep fresh. 3.Do I see value in racing the same races as my friends? 4.Do I like being around other racers and feed off their good energy or do they freak me out and get me more nervous? ID people that are good to be around & those you may need to avoid. No need to be rude. 5.Am I obsessive and do I freak others out? Would I dare to ask people to borrow their massage stick and their
body glide? You gotta laugh. Ha, love it! 6.What did I do well in racing? See log- while it’s fresh in your mind make those notes. You can’t find the benefits of
keeping a log 7.What did I not to do well and how can I do it better next time? See log. Get the hint? Record in your race results
log! It’s not too late – do it now Continued Page 75

TRAVELING RACES Traveling to race is not just another race. Traveling to a race takes a lot of your time, mental energy, financial resources, and focus. I will include a few thought provoking questions to get you thinking... In an effort to evaluate your race weekend experience and optimize your next big race experience, take a few minutes to look at these questions and respond genuinely........ 1. What is the best way to travel to race? Plane? Car? If plane, do I need to rent a car or is it in a city where all is close and
uber is available? 2. Do I see the value in staying close to the race site? 3. Am I willing to pay considerably more to stay close to the race venue? 4. Or would I rather stay farther away and removed from the constant race energy? 5.What is the best way to get my bike to the race? What things did you learn about packing, assembling, and breaking down
your bike? Is it best to bring it in the plane? Ship it? Bike Transport? 6.Do I benefit from arriving early and riding the course? 7.Do I benefit from swimming the course before the race? 8.Do I benefit from running the course? 9. How many days before the race should I arrive? ***Be practical! For me with an unfamiliar climate, I make it a point to
schedule my arrival at least 2 full days before the race to swim and ride on the course the same time as my race time so this way I can be best prepared for the climate I will have on race day. 10.If there is a race the day before do I benefit from going to watch? If so what should I specifically look for? *****I always look
at the placement of swim course buoys, bike mount line, bike dismount line, & transition flow. And always know that they could change things on race day so to double check everything on race day 11.Do I like doing something the day/ afternoon evening/ before the race to keep my mind off my nerves or would I rather stay in my hotel room solo and focus on everything about the race? 12.what time do I want to be home or in hotel doing nothing in an effort to wind down for bed the night before the race? 13.What is my best pre meal night before the race? What is my go to food in case I cannot find what I want the evening before the race? (I always pack dry oatmeal and nuts to eat for dinner in case I cannot get my ideal meal.) 14.What can I do ahead of time for my partner to set the stage and prepare him for his cooperation, patience and support that I will need on race weekend? 15. What can I do for my partner to thank him for his cooperation, patience and support after the race weekend that will go a long way so he will come again? 16.Overall did I enjoy this race weekend? Was it charging and inspiring for me to work even harder than I do & to come back next year? Be honest. Or was this too mentally draining, financially draining, relationship draining, and too much pressure for me? If it was a negative experience what can you do to change it to be a positive experience. Remember we do this for fun. 17. What did I do well or not so well? Note Race log! If you do not have a race results log then create a “Race Results”
spreadsheet” with columns including Date, Event Title, Distance, Splits, Results, Course (describe the course with any notes to help you in case you race it again. Include any tips on what you can do to prepare for that course if you race it in the future) Weather, Apparel & Equipment – (Record what you wore & or used and how it affected your race performance). Fuel – (detail what, how much, and when you ate and drank & how each worked so you know for next time to do it again or not). 18. Would I like to return and race again? Note race log

LATEST ATHLETIC RECOVERY TOOL ESWT – Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy
Located at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay
What treatment is being used by professional athletes for faster recovery? ESWT – Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy helps reduce pain and heal injuries much faster than conservative methods, so when pro athletes are in great need for therapy that will give them that extra edge towards quick recovery, many of them use shockwave to heal their injuries at a fast rate.
What is ESWT? ESWT – Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy is a non-invasive acoustic wave procedure for the treatment of acute and chronic pain of the musculoskeletal system that reduces pain immediately after 1 treatment.
Acute & Chronic Pain Relief Reduced Inflammation & Scar Tissue Faster Healing Improved Circulation What are the results?
Due to the deep acoustic waves, inflammation and scar tissue that is trapped in the painful region gets released and absorbed into the body. After this happens, pain is relieved and the body is able to heal and recover properly. How does the procedure feel? The greater the injury, the stronger the dull ache sensation from the treatment will be.
