It looks like 2022 is back to full on racing.  Most all mandate s have been lifted and the majority of the  races are back on the schedule!  What does that mean for us?

Lastly, HAVE FUN!  We are back!  Enjoy what great fitness has to offer.   Exercising helps control weight,  (along with proper diet) helps with sleep and most importantly  improves health.

2019‐2021 have been challenging years for athletics and multi‐s port.  The COVID outbreak and follow up  mandates squashed a majority of the events and also group training opportunities.  Many of us not only  couldn’t race and train, but also lost motivation throughout th e crisis.

Second, be realistic.  Rome wasn’t built or rebuilt in a day!   If the pandemic has slowed or stopped your  training it will take time to bring you back up to the level of your true abilities.  Be careful and do what  you can to stay injury free.  A typical scenario is an athlete jumps in too quickly wi th too much mileage  and speed and ends up on the sidelines with injury.  You have d efeated your purpose.  Train wisely and  take this year ads a rebuild year.

Third, choose races wisely.  There are many opportunities almos t every weekend to race.  Choose the  races that fit you.  Look at reviews.  Also make them fun!  Choose new races.  Keep it fresh.  Open your  horizons on new destinations, distance and even new disciplines .  I will be going deeper into this in next  month’s article.

BUT THE GOOD NEWS!!

First, no excuses!  Time to jump back into a routine of training and racing.  Group activities are back!   Races are back!   How do I do that?  Make a plan.  Pick those races and distances you want to compete  in.  I say again, make a plan.  Set training schedules.  Take advantage of triathlon teams that have group  sessions and workouts.  Utilize  masters swim programs.  Masters swims are professionally coached and  organized.  To be a better swimming triathlete you need to Swim  Like A Swimmer!   Not just junk  mileage.  A masters swim program will push you as you will be p aired up with like athletes the same  speeds and abilities.  Nothing better than being pushed!  Find  open training opportunities throughout  your area.  Organized runs, rides and open water swims.  There are many opportunities out there that  do not charge.  Just come and pa rticipate.  Find a training par tner.  Someone to make you accountable.   Training with a buddy or group is not only more motivating but  less likely to blow off.    Want to get  serious?  Hire a coach.  There are many great certified multi‐sport, running, cycling and swimming  coaches available.  Hint – Inter view a few.  Look for that right fit for you.  Figure in your goals, budget  and location to choose the coach that is best for you!  Coaches can help you do your first 5k, first  Triathlon, first Ironman or help bring you to the level of qualifying for championships.  Choose wisely  and look for that perfect fit.

e bikes promote obesity, and unhealthy habits. This is bunk. Statistics actually show people using E assist bikes maintain or improve their conditioning. They also allow individuals who may have physical impairments that would limit their enjoyment of a regular bike to enjoy what we enjoy: being outdoors, enjoying the weather year around that makes Florida such a great place for active people to live and visit. As we grow older, the ability to have an E bike at our disposal can lengthen our cycling life that will otherwise be limited by age, arthritis, etc.

I encourage everyone to give this new equipment fair consideration. Everyone, not just those of us fortunate to be healthy enough to fully power our bikes should have the opportunity to enjoy our outdoors.

Some of my social media friends have recently regaled a sign saying “No e bikes” which I believe was on the Pinel las Trail. Before taking sides on any issue, a study of facts and information always makes sense. In Florida, E bikes are governed under several sections of a statute. Those that are truly E assist, meaning requiring pedaling to activate or de activate the battery, are true assist bikes, and governed as such. Ones that don’t require any pedaling, and can be powered solely by the battery, are NOT E bikes, and never should be allowed on bike paths or trails The law also limits assist bikes to an upper limit of 28 Somemph.think

Donna Bollinger has a book & teaches people what to do when a rip current is present @https://www.donnabollinger.com Coach Kareem Kirby and I are getting a clinic together where we address this and more Fetch Watersports & Safety are a great resource https://www.fetchwatersportsandsafety.com

If you go to a beach and you don’t know the beach, walk to where you will be swimming and make sure there is nothing that could interfere with your swim. Sighting is very important and finding a building or structure that doesn’t move like the pier. By doing that you will make sure that you are swimming straight to your destination and it will help you determine if the current is taking you far from shore. (You can also do that when breathing, if you see the building are getting smaller, you might be going to Cuba)

Always study the weather conditions, wind, lightning, tidal currents, tides, bottom, make sure you know if there is a sandbar at the beach you are swimming, if you swim in a lake make sure to wear the right goggles for better view of your Dependingsurroundings.on

Remember not to swim alone, always tell someone where you will be.

Swimming in rough waters could be extremely dangerous or it could be fun

Swimming in rough waters could be extremely dangerous or it could be fun, it all depends on your experience as a swimmer and as an open water swimmer.

Almost all the beaches have small and not very strong rip currents but when the wind speed increase Rip currents form when waves break near the shoreline, piling up water between the breaking waves and the beach. One of the ways this water returns to sea forming a rip current, a narrow stream of water moving swiftly away from shore, often perpendicular to the (Inshoreline.theEast coast the rip currents can go up to half a mile out) If you do get caught in a riptide, don’t panic. Try to remain calm and swim parallel to shore to get out of it. If you try to swim against the current, you might get exhausted and really panic even more.

This morning we had a few swimmers that swam with current and practice in and outs, riding some waves and working on higher turnover to help with the swim stroke on choppy conditions. There is plenty of information about all these and more, safety and most importantly prevention.

You can find info shared by Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department beach patrol https://youtu.be/iIa_33wJtR0 Julie Madison and Lynn Griesemer on their you tube video https://youtu.be/V5qnUYxgZEM

• When you feel the stretch in the back of your hip, pull gently with the hand on your shin so that your hip rotates.

Piriformis Syndrome

Maintaining flexibility in your hip allows you to run more efficiently, improve your cadence, and can reduce the frequency of overuse injuries. This is a basic recommendation about this injury. As always, seek medical advice should you be experiencing painful symptoms that do not readily resolve. If you need assistance in resolving piriformis pain or any other running related injury, feel free to e mail me at: carrigo@advancedrehab.us with questions or comments. Keep moving!

While there are several stretches that can help, there is one that seems to be the most effective for people most often:

• Perform this stretch at least twice a day, morning, and afternoon/evening.

Sometimes running can be a pain in the butt. Literally ! There is a small muscle located deep in the back of your hip called the piriformis that is often the culprit. When you run your piriformis can become tight causing pain in your butt or even down the back of your thigh . The piriformis is a stabilizing muscle that helps support your leg when you hit the ground. When the other muscles , particularly your hamstrings, become fatigued…your body will try and compensate, often using the piriformis to try and help push you forward when running.

Stretching the piriformis can greatly reduce pain and improve hip mobility, allowing you to run more freely.

Unfortunately, the piriformis fatigues easily which can cause it to tighten during a workout. Sometimes tightness in the pir iformis can even cause irritation to the nearby sciatic nerve caus ing pain, numbness and tingling into the leg. Piriformis pain can be present while sitting for long periods of time and with running.

At Advanced Rehabilitation we will keep you moving no matter what you do. Contact Advanced Rehabilitation at (813) 250-1208 or www.AdvancedRehab.us with your injury prevention, maintenance, or rehabilitation needs!

• Grab your knee with the same sided hand and place your opposite hand on your shin.

• With your top hand, pull your knee diagonally across your body towards your opposite shoulder.

• Lie on your back, bend your hip and knee.

• This stretch can also be done before and/or after running to help improve flexibility and reduce pain.

Christopher Arrigo, MS, PT , ATC, Cert. DN Advanced Rehabilitation Tampa, Florida

• Hold that stretch for 25 seconds and then release. Repeat the stretch 3 5 times.

"The race was born after Joe Fernandez the guest speaker from Tampa, Fl., director of many races and editor of Florida Race Place magazine spoke on the cutting edge of multi-sport events, such as triathlon at a race director’s clinic sponsored by the Pensacola Runner’s Association and organized by Ann Knight. Dee Lucas, the Promotions and Events person for the island attended the clinic, approached Ann with the idea of sponsoring a Triathlon on the beach in the off season to promote tourism. With the support of her friend Janet Boylan, a date was selected and with much mentoring from Joe and his friend Fred Rzymek from South Florida the SRI-TRI was off and running!"

The first race was on October 12, 1996. Ann said "I hoped for 250 athletes and we had 450!" - this was just the beginning of many years of success as the race grew to over 1,300 athletes.. Despite some tough weather years the event continued to grow and triathletes from all over the United States flocked to Pensacola Beach to compete in one of "America's 100 must do races".

From its inception, a large portion of the profits have been donated to many projects on Pensacola Beach which included dune restoration, benches for trolley stops, bike racks around the island, playground equipment for the Beach School, bikes for the Beach Sheriff Department, surfboards and life preservers for the lifeguards, and sponsoring youth triathletes to attend USA Triathlon Training Camp as well as hosting a week-long triathlon program for under-privileged youth within the community. The generous donations continue today to programs that support youth and adult athletic programs in the community.

The one thing that one can say about the Santa Rosa Island Triathlon is its ability to overcome adversity. Ann Knight, an experienced race director teamed with the Santa Rosa Island Authority and volunteered to hold a triathlon on Pensacola Beach to promote tourism and bring visitors to the beach during the off season.
