June 1 ANNIE GET YOUR GUN The Outdoor Adventure Center is hosting an educational class specifically for women. The course will teach women how to handle and fire a gun. From 10:00 am – 3:00 pm participants will learn the different types of guns, what they are used for, how to use them, and how to clean them. Two FREE 40 minute shows will be held, one at 3:00 pm and the other at 6:30 pm located at the Abrams Theater. The show will have 6 of the popular characters, including a new character created especially for the USO…her name is Katie and she is a military child! June 7 FREE KID’S CATFISH DERBY Outdoor Adventure Center in partnership with Resource Management Branch, Missouri Department of Conservation, and American Fisheries Society will host the annual Kid’s Catfish Derby, FREE and open to the public, at TA 228 pond at the corner of Iowa Ave (FLW 1) and FLW Rt. 38. Registration begins at 9:00 am; fishing starts at 10:00 am through 12:00 pm. Prizes will be given throughout the derby for those lucky kids who catch one of our tagged fish. June 15 CONCEALED CARRY WEAPONS CLASS The Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC) is hosting Concealed Carry Weapons Class; the first step in acquiring a Missouri CCW endorsement including weapons qualification on the range. Class is 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Cost is $15 to register, $65 day of class. Each student must bring a photo ID, eye and hearing protection, semi-automatic handgun and a revolver (plus minimum of 50 rounds each), and lunch or money for food. All handguns must be in good working condition. If you do not have both types of guns, please notify the OAC at time of pre-registration so that arrangements can be made. Class is open to the public 21 yrs. and older. Interested patrons must be registered the day prior to each class at the Outdoor Adventure Center located at 2290 FLW K Road. July 4 MWR INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION A family-friendly Independence Day Celebration hosted by Fort Leonard Wood and Family & MWR will be held on Thursday, July 4, 2014. Join family, friends and service members from all branches to celebrate our country’s birthday as we gather to enjoy this exciting red-white-and-blue extravaganza. The celebration starts at 3pm on Gammon Field, on Iowa Ave with a Car Show, petting zoo, pony rides, interactive games, disc dog performances, Salute to the Nation, and live entertainment by the 399th Army Band, local musician Kricket Alley and Tour for the Troops Concert featuring country music star Chris Young! The grand finale, the area’s largest firework display, will follow the Chris Young Concert and light up the sky with a blaze of glory. Class is 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Cost is $15 to register, $65 day of class. Each student must bring a photo ID, eye and hearing protection, semi-automatic handgun and a revolver (plus minimum of 50 rounds each), and lunch or money for food. All handguns must be in good working condition. If you do not have both types of guns, please notify the OAC at time of pre-registration so that arrangements can be made. Class is open to the public 21 yrs. and older. Interested patrons must be registered the day prior to each class at the Outdoor Adventure Center located in Bldg. 2290 FLW K Road. July 20 ANNIE GET YOUR GUN The Outdoor Adventure Center is hosting an educational class specifically for women. The course will teach women how to handle and fire a gun. From 10:00 am – 3:00 pm participants will learn the different types of guns, what they are used for, how to use them, and how to clean them. The course includes a trip to the range to fire a few different types of guns. Cost is $20 per person, 18yrs and older, and includes lunch and ammo. Registration must be made one week prior to event. CYS SERVICE SPECIAL OPENING - RESPITE CARE Deployment Respite Care is available for children registered with CYS Services whose parent/sponsor is deployed, on TCS, PCS or TDY (90179 days) orders or a Service Member of the deployed unit. Sixteen free hours of care is available per month, per child, during the deployment. A copy of the Service Member‘s orders must be provided. The CDC opens twice a month for this service. The normal cost of hourly care is $4 per hour; payment must be made in advance. This service may be utilized by other patrons whose children are registered for hourly care. Reservations are required and may be made up to two weeks in advance. Care is available for children 6 weeks - 5th grade. Due to space limitations, paid reservations may be bumped to make room for deployed Service Member‘s reservations. If this should occur, advance payments will be refunded. PERSHING COMMUNITY CENTER TO CLOSE FOR RENOVATIONS: The Pershing Community Center will CLOSE for renovations during the summer of 2014. To provide a bridge during the renovation period, MWR will offer some services at the Piney Valley Golf Course. MWR will operate bar services on Friday and Saturday evenings and will be able to cater some limited events on a case by case basis at the pavilion and gazebo at the golf course.
