Airways flight back home was leaving later at 10 that night. He knew there was no better way to soak in his Fiji experience then at the Sabeto mud pools. He got off his domestic flight from Taveuni at around 2pm and made his way to the Sabeto Mud Pools. It was only 20 minutes away from the airport and he managed to find a driver who was willing to wait for him the entire two hours he was there. He was going to utlise the shower facilities available before heading back to the airport to check in for his flight at 5PM. Wow! He had it all figured out. I asked him why this activity and not others. He mentioned that de didn’t get a chance to use a single taxi while in Fiji, he travelled by tour bus, boat, flight but not a taxi. I wasn’t expecting that answer. It was time for me to move to the fourth pool, I wanted to find out more but I found myself wishing him well on his journey and thanked him for choosing Fiji as his travel destination. The fourth pool is my personal favourite it’s pretty much a giant hot tub. It was time to clear off any extra mud I had on my skin and truly immerse yourself into the natural hot spring. Again my mind floated back to the visitor in the next pool. He must have been reading my mind because before I knew it he was sitting by the end of the pool ready for this final hot pool experience. I decided to ask him why catching a taxi was on his list of things to do in Fiji. He smiled and said, “I drove a taxi, a yellow one just like that one for a long time, never thought I’d be in Fiji but here I am”.

The bride-to-be absolutely insisted on Turtle Island in Fiji for their honeymoon in Febr 2019 and it changed the entire course of their lives in an amazing twist of fate.

Upon arrival on the very early morning Fiji Airways flight from their home in Los Ang the Turtle Island (Guest Services) team whisked Baron & Bren Bruno to Essenc Fiji, for relaxing massages and a quick breakfast. It was still too early for their room check-in so the courteous staff recommended they visit the lively and extremely popular Port Denarau Marina.

Baron and Bren hopped on the Bula Bus to begin their island adventures! They walking around for only a few minutes when they came upon the Professionals Real E office near the Marina. Since they already managed an award-winning real estate together in Marina del Rey, California, they were both very curious about the real e market and home prices in Fiji.

Baron insisted on going inside and asking further questions after looking at the many lis in the window. They were warmly greeted with a radiant smile by Azbar Nadeem, who the office, and soon the discussion quickly took an unexpected turn. Baron and Bren looked at each other in a magical moment (like that first time when they met), not a word exchanged, and then Baron turned to Azbar and said, “if he doesn’t get his deposit in by then, we’re up next!” Bren knew that Baron could always spot a great opportunity, and everything just seemed “right”. After exchanging contact details, they walked across the courtyard, sat down at the Hard Rock Cafe to discuss what had just happened over a few cold drinks... on the first day of their honeymoon... before even checking into their hotel! Were they really considering buying this business and moving to Fiji? Was this really happening? Who does something like this? They were just supposed to be on their honeymoon! The address of their business in Los Angeles happens to be on “Fiji Way”, so were they actually going to move from “Fiji Way” to the actual country of Fiji? Yet another strange coincidence! Bren told Baron that “things happen for a reason, and this is something special, we both know it - and feel it. Let’s make our dreams become our reality!”

Learning to Surf with a Fiji Pro By Taleah Mitchell It is my twelfth-birthday weekend and like previous birthdays, we usually go looking for new experiences. This year as Fiji borders remain closed like much of the world, we chose to go somewhere closer to home. My mum loves her birthday surprises, so my brother and I did not have a clue where we were going or the biggest question: what did she get me for my birthday. We left Suva driving towards Pacific Harbor, 25 minutes out of Pacific Harbour we turned into Vunanui Village and drove along a dirt road for another 3KM. My mum is one for those off the beaten track trips no matter which country we are in. We were once thrown into a moving sleeper train in Vietnam so this was not new for my brother and I. We arrived at a little resort tucked away at the end of the dirt road called Matanivusi Beach Eco-Resort. To be honest it did not look like much at first, however that entrance was deceiving. We walked through the pool and restaurant, which was a stone throw away from a beautiful white sandy beach. A few families were out enjoying the great weather. For a moment, it felt as if borders were open and everything was normal.

We were quickly ushered towards our Bure and the view was mind blowing. We walked through a wooden plank walkway, almost like living on a treehouse, which had massive rain trees to the left across from our Bure. The walkway also led up to a Yoga platform and a Spa. I felt so tiny under those trees. Our Bure had a double bed and a single bed with a balcony facing the Ocean and a footpath that took us straight to the beach. You get the best of both worlds here. The Forest on one side and the Ocean on the other and they do everything to ensure that the environment here is well protected. Our plans moved very quickly as soon as we settled into our rooms. My mum announced her surprise birthday gift: Surf Lessons! I surfed previously at Natadola beach with my cousins but it was more those DIY lessons so actual

professional surfing lessons was something I had always wanted. We gathered at the beach where our surfing instructor was waiting with surfboards laid out. He introduced himself as Lesi, who I later found out had represented Fiji at various Surfing tournaments across the world. Something to brag about to the cousins. Our lessons included about 40 minutes on the beach learning about the surfboard we were using, safety in the water and steps on how to standup and catch that wave. Looked easy and simple but that might have been because I had a Fiji Rep as an instructor. We took a 30-minute boat ride out to the Vunaniu break, which is mostly for kids and beginners and from here, you can spot the big boys out at Frigates enjoying some massive waves. I was nervous and at the same time excited to show off my new skills.

I had two professional surfers join me in the water so I felt safe all throughout and they made sure I had a blast. I paddled out and tried catching a few waves but did not have the courage to stand up just yet. On a few attempts, I had one of the boys surfing next to me cheering me on and encouraging me to stand. Finally that moment came and I gathered all I had just learnt and put it into play. I caught my first wave! Felt as if I was competing at a tournament with the screams and cheers that were coming my way. Up I went riding this wave for what felt like a few long minutes before I got wiped out and into ocean I went. That was not as scary as I thought. So up again I went catching a few waves all morning and the same the next day. We ended our surfing weekend looking around for Dolphins that usually swim by the passage and a quick snorkel by the reef, which was filled with magical colored coral reefs and fish.

now they are only found on four. Bush fires, clearance of forests for farming and introduction of predators by humans are responsible for the demise of this species on several islands. The most fascinating fact is that each island iguana is genetically unique. In 2010 we started a captive breeding program for Monuriki Island crested iguanas under a MOU with the landowners and the National Trust for Fiji (NTF). A total of 9 adult pairs were safely captured and moved to our captive breeding facility by the NTF. Our highly successful captive breeding for head start programme produced a total of 80 new individuals. The captive bred plus the wild caught breeding stock have been released back to its native habitat on Monuriki Island. All iguanas are microchipped for ease of identification. We have been technically assisted by Dr. Peter Harlow of Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Sandiego Zoo in California, Robert Fisher of the US Geology Department and World Iguana Specialist Group.

Under the direction of Nanuku’s Marine Biologist and Environmental Guardian, guests are invited to help plant coral routinely on Nanuku reef. Not only to expand the reef for excellent snorkelling, but to provide a natural habitat for marine life. Nanuku also runs education workshops with local communities and schools.

Mangroves help sustain fish populations, maintain water quality, filter pollutants and trap sediments. Nanuku harvests mangrove seedlings in recycled bottles in the resort nursery until they are primed for planting around the resort and in local communities. To date Nanuku staff and guests have planted 10,500 mangrove trees across the Culanuku, Wainiyabiya and Galoa villages. Guests are welcome to experience Nanuku’s sustainable food production and sourcing. Everything from on-site rice paddy harvesting, daily fresh egg collection, a bee-keeping experience and garden tours to pick fresh fruit, vegetables and organic herbs harvested with only organic compost. In 2019 Nanuku released their own beer label Ua Levu; in collaboration with local micro-brewery Kailoma Brewing Co. located on the Coral Coast. The resort steers away from imports in support of local suppliers to preserve and protect future Fijian generations to come. Nanuku also grind their own coffee on site and have upcoming plans to grow their own seaweed! Guests are invited to enjoy the resort’s cruiser bikes (equipped with toddler trailers if required) rather than resort carts. All rooms are fitted with a dedicated rain tank to filter and treat rain water. Guests enjoy everything from water dispensers, solar lighting, bio-degradable paper straws and bamboo-pulp containers, plus so much more. To aid nearby villages and foster Fiji’s rich traditions, Nanuku hosts several local businesses in collaborative culinary events, plus regularly invites locals to entertain guests with traditional hymns, songs, fire-walking performances and much more. Nanuku offers endless local guest experiences including food safaris, school visits and shopping expeditions to help support the Fijian villages.

Our dive master guided us down a guide line, and we descended together into a world teeming with life. We stopped at about 3 meters to see if we were still comfortable to continue the dive. Of course, now fully exhilarated, the initially-reluctant 12 year old signalled for us to keep going. We reached our first location and everyone took their positions behind a barrier. As we looked up behind us, our Dive Master and her team looked like Aquaman and Aquawomen. Standing in between each diver protecting us from every corner as the different species of sharks swamped the fish food bin trying to get a feed. At one point a bull shark swam slowly and swiftly directly at me, feeling like a first date as it looked deeply into my eyes leaping in for a first kiss, till Aquawomen came in and gave it a quick tug towards its lunch. Organised chaos was what it felt like. Everything seemed so surreal. Was this really

us? There was no feeling of fear at all; there was no feeling of doubt. (Not because we read that sharks could smell fear) It was just us in awe of these beautiful creatures. We looked at each other to make sure we were ok and again we held each other’s hands and watched this priceless show. At that moment, the trip felt so worth it. We have never been overly confident divers and this experience truly opened our eyes to the fact that no matter how many times you’ve dived, there’s always a new underwater world still left to explore. We thought the second dive for the day would not be as exciting or anything after this but it was equally as breathtaking. The second dive was at a shallower depth, where reef sharks and white and black tips were plentiful and zapping all around the divers. It was all fun and games until an eel popped up from nowhere almost giving us a heart attack. Of course, the eel became the highlight of the entire dive trip for the 12 year old.

I have been fortunate to have been able to experience River Tubing Fiji several times since its inception. There are many wonderful excursions in Fiji that help you learn about this beautiful country and culture. This full day excursion one beats them all! You travel up the quiet but navigable Navua River in long boats to a remote village where you meet the villagers. In the village you learn about their everyday life and you are taken on a tour of their gardens to learn about native foods and remedies. Next stop in the long boats is a magnificent waterfall of gushing crystal clear Fiji Water (except after heavy rain which I quite prefer). There is a great swimming hole at the base of the waterfall, a welcome refreshing relief on a warm day. If you are lucky some of the boys will entertain you by diving into the waterhole from a great height. It is a short trek up to the waterfall on concrete paths with guide ropes where necessary for extra safety. Long boats then take you on a short trip to a beach (yes, there are beaches in Fiji’s interior) where you enjoy a beautiful lunch of both western and traditional foods. Some of the food is sourced from the village garden. This is a highlight for many! After lunch the real fun begins, as you float down the river on ‘double hulled’ tyre tubes, floating over gentle rapids, all the time guided by the crew who float with you.

The River Tubing team have taken 4 year olds through to 80 year olds, as well as those with physical limitations on their trips so it was great to learn that everyone can be accommodated and that the team at River Tubing Fiji are flexible. Less confident people and young children have their own guide so it is super safe. Most parts of the river you can stand up in. Just a what a wonderful way to finish the day, floating down the river at a gentle pace, enjoying the scenery and listening to the crew serenade you (everyone in Fiji can sing)! River Tubing Fiji combines adventure, eco and culture tourism into one amazing package. The people I have travelled with have highly valued the fact that you visit a village located deep in the interior as the villagers go about their everyday life. The experience is authentic. While there is no market selling trinkets, you leave knowing part of your fee contributes to improvements in the village. Flushing toilets are an example of what our visits have funded. For me, it is a must do when you visit Fiji. River Tubing Fiji is a very professional outfit, constantly updating and refining their craft and having taken the tour six times, I have found something new to experience each time. Can’t wait to visit again when borders open.

YOUR PERFECT SPOT

at daku

Daku Resort is the perfect spot for your first post-Covid trip to Fiji. It’s resort life without resort prices. It’s a resort of bures and villas that are, by their very nature, socially distanced. It’s CFC approved. All staff are fully vaccinated. It’s in an area that has been covid-free. And it’s not just a perfect spot because it’s safe. It’s located on a hundred acre site on beautiful Savusavu Bay. The views are stunning. The accommodation, whether it’s a bure for two or a three bedroomed villa with pool, has been recently upgraded during the quiet time that covid brought. Unlike many resorts, we have stayed open throughout. It’s very much the staff’s home and neither they, nor us as owners, could envisage life without guests. There’s a lot of stored-up love and care available from the minute you’ll walk in. We take great pride in our kitchen, but, should you fancy something different, we’re just a twenty minute walk away from Savusavu town. To check special rates for FijiTime readers and to find out more, call us on (+679) 8850 046 or e-mail us at reservations@dakuresort.com or find us on Facebook. Come and Experience a Different Fiji. Captain’s Café and Captain’s Table at The Copra Shed From an unassuming barn-like copra storage facility in decades past to the sprawling, wooden architectural gem we enjoy today, the Copra Shed has long been a landmark in Savusavu. As a popular marina and destination for yachts, the Copra Shed also serves as a food mecca in its own right offering a variety of food to match any craving or budget. Choose casual, bistro style dining at Captain’s Café, where the umbrella tables are so close to the water that you can feed the colourful fish in the bay below. From breakfast plates to lunchtime burgers, pizzas and stir-fries, the menu is also available at the picnic style tables on the protected lawn area. But for more refined fare, head to Captain’s Table and tuck into a delicious fettuccine alfredo or special fish of the day. Enjoy it with a crisp glass of wine and get lost while enjoying unparalleled views of bobbing yachts on the bay with misty mountains in the background. It doesn’t get more romantic than this.

Sugarlicious Tucked away off the busy main street, behind BSP bank, is the little but fierce café, Sugarlicious. With its clever corrugated iron interior design, this casual café first gained fame for its assortment of cakes, pies and beverages. The menu has now branched out into breakfast, lunch and dinner favourites including authentic fresh curries, flavourful soups and healthy entrees like the very popular fish malolo (fresh fish cooked with spinach and coconut cream and served over rice). Sugarlicious has a loyal fan base not just because of its menu but because of the personable husband and wife owners, who truly make customers feel welcome. Located about 20 minutes by car from Savusavu Town on the Hibiscus Highway, this venue is truly unique to the area, carved out of a working coconut plantation that has been around for generations under the same family. Now a dreamy tropical garden setting, Vaga’s lively host and owner is usually on hand and her pride in the place is obvious. But throw in a smattering of world-class resorts, frequent daily stress-free connections from Nadi, and tons of things to do and you’ll see why they’re such a magnet for holiday goers. Regular daily boat transfers from Port Denarau on Denarau Island and even shorter flights from Nadi Airport.

As a complete, holistic holiday destination in and of itself, VOMO comprises one spectacular main island (225 acres), a second stunning sister island a short boat ride or kayak away, and an expansive pristine ocean playground surrounding both. Sitting pretty on the main island is the resort. Boutique, exclusive and catering for all holiday types, the accommodation and amenities offer a generous mix of luxury and cultural authenticity, remaining true to everyone’s idea of a dream Fiji island escape. With an abundance of space to share, families, couples and groups of holidaymakers are perfectly comfortable staying on the island together. Considering it has only one resort, how does this private island destination cater so well to so many? Offering a high-end exclusive adults-only pool and bar area, one of the best kids clubs in Fiji and simply the expanse of the island’s 255 acres and long, long beaches, you’d be hard-pressed to find a luxury holiday resort that ticks all ‘must-haves’ as well as VOMO does. Here’s what suits each holiday group best and how VOMO, with different activity programmes, accommodation styles and amenities, has carefully considered what a dream holiday looks like for each.

For the Family. From toddlers to teens. Because family is everything. For the little ones in your life, VOMO boasts one of the most well-equipped Kids Clubs you’ll find at any resort in the world. It’s free for children 3 years and up and has a substantial outdoor area with a beautiful lawn, swings and play equipment, cubby house, indoor and outdoor dining areas, incredible toys, craft areas and a movie room. The quality of toys and cleanliness of this centre is impressive. The Kids Village coordinators keep kids busy engaged in activities that change every day and have a distinctly Fiji island flavour. Kids are invited to try husking coconuts, making grass skirts, frangipani leis and shell dream catchers or fish feeding, t-shirt painting, cooking and other adventure-based play. VOMO’s beloved activities crew will have your teens screen-free and busy from sunrise to sunset. Football on the beach, tennis, golf, gym and an array of exhilarating water sports to whet their adventurous appetite. There are beach walks, beach bonfires, star talks, village tours, community-based activities, environmental pursuits, ocean swims, and even teen spa treatments. To give parents plenty of time to themselves, particularly on an evening, the Kids Club Little Islanders have ‘Baby Butlers’ to provide all-day care if requested. Each villa is gifted with VOMO’s compliments, four (4) hours of babysitting every day. With the children happily skipping off to dinner at the Kids Village, parents have the opportunity to enjoy date night with sunset cocktails and moonlit dinners under canopies of stars – romantic holiday evenings that dreams are made of.

island resOrt & spa There are 15 words in the Fijian language meaning Heaven and ‘Yasawa’ is the first. Yasawa Island Resort and Spa is an exclusive all-inclusive resort on one of the most remote and unspoiled islands of Fiji. The Yasawa Islands are famous for their beautiful white sand beaches and gorgeous weather. Located at the very top of the Yasawa Island group, Yasawa Island Resort & Spa is in the sunniest and driest part of Fiji, enjoying tropical warmth and ideal ocean temperatures all year round, and the least amount of rainfall even in Fiji’s tropical months. Yasawa Island Resort and Spa is the only resort or commercial development on an island that is 22 kilometres (14 miles) long. This affords many luxuries... exclusivity, 11 private beaches for guests’ use, a truly authentic culture, untouched snorkelling & diving, and the space to escape from the pressures of the ‘real world’. Yasawa guests have been self-isolating for over 30-years. 18 traditionally thatched, beachfront bures are understated in their luxury. Nestled among the palms, each air-conditioned bure has a discreet outdoor shower; an expansive deck with daybeds to wile away the afternoons; a separate living area with mini bar and iPod docking station; a hammock strung between the palms; incredible views of the ocean, and your own thatched cabana with sun loungers on the edge of Yasawa’s famous white sand beach.

Their signature massage, the Baravi Rhythm, is performed by two synchronised therapists, working in time with the sound of the waves.

Baravi Spa treatments and techniques have been sourced from around the world and adapted to local Fijian products and symbolism. Hot rock therapies use black volcanic pebbles to reflect the fiery rift that created Yasawa Island. Take your vows on the sands of a deserted beach, before a tropical sunset or under the southern stars. You needn’t decide until you get there. Invite the choir from nearby Bukama village, choose traditional decorations and tropical flowers or summon a guard of Fijian warriors. A wedding at Yasawa is yours to command – make it as elaborate or as simple as you like. Accommodation on Yasawa is secluded and private the ultimate being the Lomalagi Honeymoon Suite - The name says it all – Lomalagi, the Fijian word for heaven. “Phew that was really close and very scary!” Saboo exclaimed. After this experience, she became more aware of her surroundings and the changes happening in the ocean. Over time, as she continued to explore the ocean, Saboo couldn’t help but notice that with each year that passed, the coral seemed to get a little duller and the water filled with more and more plastic. From bottles to bags, the ocean she called home was quickly becoming polluted, and it made her very sad and scared. Her oversized front flipper was a constant reminder of the harm that plastics could do. A few years back, she had another unfortunate encounter involving a sweet but stubborn flying fish who had gotten herself stuck inside a fishing net. Using her past experience, Saboo helped Fifi escape from the fishing net. Fifi was young and scared and she reminded Saboo of her younger self. She remembered how scared he was when she got stuck in the plastic bag. After freeing Fifi, Saboo could not stay silent anymore. She felt the need to take a stand and began the Our Ocean, Our Life campaign. She was joined on her campaign by her cool climate fighter friends, Fifi the flying fish, Okie the octopus, Starry the starfish, and Skipper the seahorse. You can now find Saboo and her friends cruising through the ocean, helping marine life who have been affected by plastic pollution and spreading the word to creatures in the sea and on land.

Collect the other books in the ‘Our Ocean, Our Life’ series to meet Saboo’s friends and join their journey to save the ocean.

I’m packing a bag, getting ready for a long flight. I’m excited to be flying to another country. Within 3 hours I’m in the air, en route to our destination. Nine hours later and we’re at top of descent. A different country lies beneath us, bright lights and skyscrapers almost reaching the skies. Every traveller knows the thrill that comes next. Wheels meet the runway, and there’s a roar as the thrust reversers kick in. There’s a short taxi but after almost ten hours onboard, it seems to go on forever. We’re at the gate. Brakes set, engine masters off, seatbelt signs off. As the engines wind down to a complete stop, I’m filled with relief. I take a deep breath and tell myself with a smile, “We’re here, we’re finally here!” Snap out of it. You’re not on holiday, and covid is still here. There are protocols to be followed, and followed strictly. There’s no layover, not even for a night. Rush... rush... rush! Planning and briefing, cargo loading and refuelling, checks and checklists. There’s no time to look out that window. Before you know it, we’re back on the runway and powering up. Cleared for take-off, wheels off, and we’re on the ten hour flight home. My bag stays packed, my daydream remains a dream. After around 23 hours in the aircraft, we’re home. I love flying these beautiful beasts, but what really makes this job fulfilling is knowing that I’ve just helped deliver much-needed cargo in the midst of a pandemic. I look forward to once more flying passengers into and out of an open and covid-free Fiji. Until then, this is the life of a (fully vaccinated) Fiji Airways freighter pilot. Vinaka (Thank you)

TREE POSE From any standing position, Tree Pose is a great way to relieve pressure on your feet and work your balance. Try it while waiting in line or get up at any time and work your legs! Start off with you feet together. Inhale as you externally rotate your right hip joint and draw the right foot as close to your pelvis as possible. If the foot does not rise up above the knee, then keep it below the knee to avoid applying pressure on the knee. Activate your left leg and feel your balance from the pelvic floor. Either place your hands in prayer or place one hand on the wall to assist your balance. Gaze at the nose. Stay for five breaths and then repeat on the other side.
