Introduction
Lifetime Psalm (from Uruguay)
In the middle of England stands the National Memorial Arboretum, an area of 152 acres dedicated to the memory of those who have served their country, or who have died in conflict since 1945. It consists of some 50,000 maturing trees and over 200 memorials.
Praise my soul our good Lord, sing songs to his name, for he has brought my life into fresh waters when I was thirsty. He has fed me with the Bread of Life when I was starving. He has sustained me along all my days and never has put me to shame. Praise my soul our good Lord, for all his goodness.
2,535 of those trees make up the Merchant Navy Convoy, each representing a ship lost during the Second World War, and the 31,908 seafarers who were also lost in that conflict. The Convoy as a whole is dedicated to over 46,000 British merchant seafarers and fishermen who were lost in conflict during the twentieth century.
A Prayer (from the Caribbean) Dear God, the waters that wash the shores of our islands remind us that your Spirit is moving over our world. Forgive us for not taking good care of the resources of the sea. In our indifference, we pollute by casting off waste – disused cans, bottles, sticks, oil, any and everything into the waters. Help us to become a people who take greater pride in what you have entrusted to us. May we ever strive to make you proud of us. Help us work towards the time when our waters challenge us to the need for cleanliness in every sphere of existence. As your Son called people who made a living by the waters to follow him, so may we hear your voice beckoning us to serve you. Amen.

For many seafarers there is no grave but the sea. They have no permanent memorial to mark their passing. Their memorial is in the memory of those they leave behind, the family and friends from whom they were parted by time and distance, just by being at sea. In the book of Ecclesiasticus we find a hymn in honour of our ancestors (chapter 44). It sings the “praises of famous men” to whom “the Lord apportioned to them great glory . . . . Some of them have left behind a name, so that others declare their praise.” But for the majority “there is no memory . . . . But these also were godly men, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten . . . . Their bodies are buried in peace, but their name lives on generation after generation.” For many the seafarer is out of sight and out of mind, despite our dependency on them for the transportation of the necessities of life. They face many dangers in going to sea and their voyages may not always bring them to a safe haven. They deserve our prayers and remembrance that they may not perish “as though they had never been born”.

Introduction
Lifetime Psalm (from Uruguay)
In the middle of England stands the National Memorial Arboretum, an area of 152 acres dedicated to the memory of those who have served their country, or who have died in conflict since 1945. It consists of some 50,000 maturing trees and over 200 memorials.
Praise my soul our good Lord, sing songs to his name, for he has brought my life into fresh waters when I was thirsty. He has fed me with the Bread of Life when I was starving. He has sustained me along all my days and never has put me to shame. Praise my soul our good Lord, for all his goodness.
2,535 of those trees make up the Merchant Navy Convoy, each representing a ship lost during the Second World War, and the 31,908 seafarers who were also lost in that conflict. The Convoy as a whole is dedicated to over 46,000 British merchant seafarers and fishermen who were lost in conflict during the twentieth century.
A Prayer (from the Caribbean) Dear God, the waters that wash the shores of our islands remind us that your Spirit is moving over our world. Forgive us for not taking good care of the resources of the sea. In our indifference, we pollute by casting off waste – disused cans, bottles, sticks, oil, any and everything into the waters. Help us to become a people who take greater pride in what you have entrusted to us. May we ever strive to make you proud of us. Help us work towards the time when our waters challenge us to the need for cleanliness in every sphere of existence. As your Son called people who made a living by the waters to follow him, so may we hear your voice beckoning us to serve you. Amen.

For many seafarers there is no grave but the sea. They have no permanent memorial to mark their passing. Their memorial is in the memory of those they leave behind, the family and friends from whom they were parted by time and distance, just by being at sea. In the book of Ecclesiasticus we find a hymn in honour of our ancestors (chapter 44). It sings the “praises of famous men” to whom “the Lord apportioned to them great glory . . . . Some of them have left behind a name, so that others declare their praise.” But for the majority “there is no memory . . . . But these also were godly men, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten . . . . Their bodies are buried in peace, but their name lives on generation after generation.” For many the seafarer is out of sight and out of mind, despite our dependency on them for the transportation of the necessities of life. They face many dangers in going to sea and their voyages may not always bring them to a safe haven. They deserve our prayers and remembrance that they may not perish “as though they had never been born”.

The Mission to Seafarers is the world’s leading maritime charity providing professional support services and ship visiting to seafarers, The Mission welfare to Seafarers mariners and sailors of all faiths, as part of the worldwide Anglican St Michael Paternoster Royal Communion. The Mission provides Flying Angel clubs in 100 ports and offers a Christian welcome in a safe haven. A Mission centre typically offers counselling, affordable communications, advice on employment issues, a place for prayer and reflection, donated warm clothing, hospitality and spiritual support. In a further 150 ports, local honorary chaplains and volunteers undertake invaluable ship visiting, transport, and support services. Our ship visitors take phone cards and internet-linked laptops on board, so seafarers unable to come ashore can contact their families. All around the world, the Mission provides help and hope to seafarers, in places of greatest need.
