The Japanese Tea Gardens The Japanese Tea Gardens have been around since the California Mid-Winter Exposition in 1894. A few years after the Exposition, master gardener Makoto Hagiwara made the gardens even bigger and more impressive! This is now a beautiful, quiet oasis in the middle of the big city.

To fully experience the Japanese Tea Gardens:

Cross over a traditional drum bridge.

Find the bronze Buddha statue.

Try a warm cup of Japanese tea.

Choose a hill and climb it to explore.

Enjoy a fortune cookie.

Feed the koi fish in the koi ponds.

Find the bronze Buddha statue. Sitting among all of the plants and flowers is a bronze statue that is 10 1/2 feet (3.2 meters) tall. This Buddha was made almost 200 years ago! The actual name of this statue is Amazarashi-No-Hotoke, which means “Buddha who sits through sunny and rainy weather without shelter.” Can you think of why the statue has this long name?

Did you know? Makoto Hagiwara, the master gardener who made the Tea Gardens so beautiful, is also credited with inventing the fortune cookie! 63
