San Diego’s Past Humans have been living in the area we now call San Diego since 20,000 BC. That’s when nomadic hunters from northeast Asia followed herds of caribou, bison, and mammoths across the Bering Strait and south along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. They were the only ones living in the San Diego area until 7500 BC. Then various Paleo-Indian tribes—such as the San Dieguito people, the La Jollan people, the Yumans, and the Shoshoneans—arrived and settled in the area. The San Diego we know today came into existence on September 28, 1542. That’s when the explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo came ashore and claimed the land for the King of Spain. The Spanish, and later the Mexicans, spent hundreds of years developing San Diego and the rest of the area known as “California.” They built missions and presidios (forts) so people could worship and live safely. In May 1846, the Mexican-American War broke out. After two years of fighting, the war ended and California officially became a part of the United States. But Mexican culture is still very important to San Diego.

USS Midway: a historic aircraft carrier The USS Midway has more than 30 airplanes for you to visit, touch, and even climb inside! Many of these planes were used in wars such as World War II and Vietnam. Have you noticed that many of the planes have names, faces, or other designs painted on their sides? It was especially popular in World War I for pilots to personalize their airplanes. They would paint the airplane’s name on the side of the plane with an image to go along with it.
