I cannot get the image out of my head, of a great pike gobbling up my fly, I need to see that image again, it´s close by, I know, I can feel it. Needing to see it again is like a drug, like an obsession ... maybe it does not want to bite today, maybe tomorrow, or the day after ... I am in no hurry, I know that sooner or later I´ll get it. I know it is not easy, and maybe with luck and many, many hours, I can catch one or two big pike each season.
Autumn
Autumn and, above all, late autumn, are for me the best times for pike fly fishing, whenever I have some spare time, I try to go. The river begins to drop, still with a good head of water, and it begins to brighten. The pike are getting stronger for the winter.
Overcast and rainy days are perfect, though sometimes uncomfortable.
Winter
Winter is a great time to try to catch a big fish, but sometimes weather conditions are rather harsh. (6 째 C below zero)
The last New Year’s Eve
We must be courageous and persistent. Heavy frost days are not the most productive, but sometimes...
I prefer to use large pike flies, although sometimes a smaller unobtrusive fly is the one that triggers the attack. Better with very little or no lead, allowing the line to work.
Spring
In spring large females prepare for spawning, if you hit one on the days before and after you could get the fish of a lifetime.
Show due care and respect to fish at this time, release them quickly.
Summer
In summer, although not the best time, you can also go fishing, always in low light, at dawn or dusk. Not the best time to try for the big one, but you can have fun with small and medium sized pike.
Fishing from a float tube on smaller waters is very entertaining, allowing you to avoid being be detected by fish. Two fly rods with different types of lines will help to try the area.
Saltwater fly rods are perfect to cast bulky flies and for fighting big pike.
The reel, better with good brake, perhaps you won´t use it that often, but it’ll always be there.
#9 or better #10 weight rods for conventional fishing, and #7 or #8 for small pike. Although hooking and fighting a pike over 10 kilos with a #7 line is an unforgettable experience.
Full Intermediate or intermediate tip lines are very useful, but it is also very handy to carry a fast sinking line.
Fluorocarbon leaders are ideal for fishing in clear water, but are not 100% reliable, medium sized pike are the most dangerous.
Using powerful, outsized gear will help us in the fight with a big pike, and enable us to cope.
Not pushing a large pike to exhaustion is vital for their survival, especially during spawning. Best to oxygenate it well before releasing.
You never know where or when you will get the fish of your dreams!
Handling the fish carefully is good for them and for your hands.
It is unusual to find a large pike on surface, you cannot fail, it’s an opportunity you cannot miss!
I keep looking for that moment, that take, maybe I´ll try again tomorrow, maybe it’s now, I can’t get it out of my head, I’m hooked on the hunt for big pike.
David Tejedor has been fly fishing for over 15 years. Pike, carp and large catfish are among his favourites to fish for. He’s not currently running a blog but everything will come in time... davidpikefly@gmail.com

Lake Strobel Giant Rainbows in the Surf
Text & Photos: George Chang Additional photos: Antonio Ca単as, Juan Pablo Marcheletti
Tucked away in a remote corner of Argentinia’s Patagonian province of Santa Cruz, Lake Strobel has recently come into the spotlight as a premier destination for trophy rainbow trout. Many believe that it is the best trophy rainbow trout destination in the world.
Francisco Cao with one of several very large rainbows he caught during his stay.
Beaches around the lake are littered with the shells of small aquatic snails, part of the abundant food supply available to trout here.

Guides from Laguna Verde Lodge use quads to move guests between fishing areas around the lake. Laguna Verde Lodge is the only full service lodge at the lake.
The author with a very bright female that weighed in just shy of 14 lbs. The small size of its head in relation to its body is typical of Lake Strobel rainbows which grow very quickly in its nutrient rich waters.
With no reference one might take scenes from the lake for salt water fishing in the surf. Patagonian winds regularly whip the lake`s nutrient rich waters into a froth. The resulting super oxygenated waters produce obscene amounts of food in the form of fresh water shrimp and snails.
Laguna Verde Lodge head guide, Juan Pablo Marceheletti shows style in posing.
Guides take care to protect themselves well from the harsh Patagonian wind and sun. Here the hole in the ozone layer is a palpable fact of life.
Lightly weighted streamers in tones of olive, brown or black with a bit of flash seem to be particularly productive, though at times it is seems that practically any color of fly can produce results.
Guides are always on the watch, ready to quickly assist fishermen when a fish is hooked. This year one of the guests at Laguna Verde Lodge pulled out a trout measuring 38 inches and weighing 24 lbs!

The wind is a fact of life at Lake Strobel. Fishermen should come prepared to fish in extreme conditions at times.

UNDERWATER PEOPLE
Photos & Text: Carlos RodrĂguez
I started this study about 5 years ago, when I created BICHO Prods, a small video production company focused on the Natural World and mainly on water. Since then, I have spent many hours trying to see under the surface, just what might be happening behind the water mirror. The results were amazing, photos of the last really big Trout remaining in Spanish Rivers, getting close to the mythical Spanish Atlantic Salmon and to the impressive migratory Sea Trout, from the most famous rivers in Cantabrian Mountain Range.

The simplest idea; if the cycle is broken, the salmon will disappear.
The Future of the Species; in shallower areas of the Narcea River we found these concentrations of young Atlantic Salmon parr.

Late December on the Narcea River; spawning is ending and time too, for this incredible male Atlantic Salmon.
At the spawning grounds, rivals watch out for each other; the smaller of these two is a nice 55 cm male trout.

During spring time, trout occupy the best hunting areas in the rivers, searching for food.

In autumn mature individuals come from the deepest parts of the lakes and reservoirs to the shallower parts of the rivers for spawning.
This study conveys a visual message for all those interested in such animals; they are still there but your help is needed to preserve them‌ so, what are you going to do about it? For further info and contact: bichoproducciones.es

The English teacher
Our friend John Langridge is responsible for giving the finishing touch to the English texts in the magazine. This Englishman from Canterbury, and based in Spain, is one of the most enthusiastic anglers we have ever known and he’s not averse to any technique or species. In Spain, he has found paradise where, for example, he can capture every species of barbel, carp and wels catfish. He is also the author of several books on fishing. FISH OF A LIFETIME We all have or could have had the fish of our lives. And that’s what happened recently to two of our friends.
Rosi Ugarte, veteran fly fisher, captured her first permit on a fly last year in Punta Allen, Mexico. The best of the story is that the reel brake broke and jammed in the middle of the fight but as luck would have it, in the end the palometa came to her hands.
Gerardo Alonso is a crazy pike fly fisherman and it is a rare weekend when he is not out after them. In early spring, he caught his biggest pike on a # 7 line fly rod. The pictures were taken with his mobile phone but the huge size of the pike is perfectly clear.
David Tejedor. His biggest wels catfish caught fly, a few days ago. 210 cm in length. Between 65 and 70 kilos.
