It´s the largest freshwater fish you can catch in Europe. Illegally introduced into the Ebro, it’s already over 100 kilos. Fly fishing for them is extreme both for the gear and for fisherman... Contributors in this issue: José Díaz, Markus Stegger, Nick Reygaert, José Luis García y Juan Urán.

Since its illegal introduction into Spain in the mid 70s the catfish has colonized waters and is growing to more than 100 kilos. For the fly fisherman it is a challenge, especially to capture the largest fish of his life.

WELS C

CATFISH

The murky waters of the Ebro are perfect for catfish, with food in abundance.

Fly fishing here is not easy, large deep pools and little room on the bank to backcast the giant flies used.

Detail of the catfish´s mouth and the large streamer that just looks like a dry fly ...

The strike comes at the deepest part of the pool, where the current is slower. It´s at the end of the fight when gear has to produce the power to raise it to the surface.

A “kitten”

The Ebro has great biodiversity and offers many leisure options, such as rafting in summer when people can explore stretches with no access from land.

With no space on the bank to land the catfish, the fisherman chooses to use the lifting power of the rod without realizing the danger...

... and the result is a broken rod.

This is a more than acceptable size for catfish on the fly, but the biggest are more easily found downstream, at the famous village of Mequinenza.

In Mequinenza, and with the Bavarian Guiding Service, Markus Stegherr rowing a catamaran. The strike options are perhaps lower but bigger fish. Stronger gear, huge flies and the idea of a hard work day with a #13 line rod.

A double cat with casting platform is perfect to fish these waters. Markus runs the operation in key areas where he knows there are catfish.

In a few years, this fish can exceed 100 kilos as have some already caught. Growth limit in these waters is not yet known but it is expected to increase. Carp fishing’s use of pellets and boilies has led to even faster growth of the catfish.

A “kitten attacks the fly on the first casts. Bleak, crayfish, small carp and other prey, are the main diet of young catfish.

Casting in shallow waters with patches of vegetation where the catfish find an ideal hunting area.

A strike in open waters

A small zander takes the big catfish fly.

Finally a big catfish. During the fight it drags the catamaran several times, while Markus rows to compensate for its strength and lift it to the surface.

The moment they´ve been waiting for, finally on board a big catfish on the fly. The reel has been decisive during the fight.

Freshwater giants. More and more fly fisherman come to the Ebro river to catch the fish of a life time.

José Díaz Markus Stegherr José Diaz showed us in the last issue how to tie a huge catfish fly. In this one he uses it on two different sections of the Ebro river. Markus Stegherr has been guiding in Mequinenza for 18 years with the Bavarian Guiding Services, a really successful company. www. bavarian-guiding-service.de

THE WORLD UPSIDE

down FLY PATTERNS: Mikel elexpuru

Fly tying desk in the middle of the river. This is what Mikel wishes, to take straight to the vise what he sees in the water.

REVERSE AMBER MAYFLY NYMPH “I designed this reverse nymph to be used in deeper waters and get it sunk in the shortest time, this is possible by placing the tungsten bead in the bend of the hook, achieving clean entry into the water and avoiding the nylon loop formed with traditional tungsten nymphs. Its movement is irresistible

Brown Cock de Leon fibres for tails. Amber plastic for the body with dark brown thread rib. Brown polypropylene loop to imitate a broken wing case with two lateral wings of barred brown Medallion. Wingcase is made with thin rubber. Amber thorax. Black plastic tinsel for legs.

BLACK CHIRONOMID EMERGER “Chironomids emerge upside down, that’s why I designed this reverse pattern. It has dramatic movement. Chironomids abundance is increasing in our waters, mainly because of their decreasing quality. Trout take advantage of these massive hatches and it’s necessary to to take along several different imitations. This emerger is perfect for sight fishing.”w

Light khaki CDC shuck Body with black thread and light grey rib Lateral legs with Cock de Leon fibres and peacock herls. Black rubber over peacock and emerald blue tinsel to form a wingcase. Peacock colour plastic thorax Black plastic tinsel for legs and white CDC antennae. Used in still waters and lakes but also for currents with short strips of line to create a perfect emergence.

Summertime South Island

Text & photographs: Nick Reygaert Gin Clear Media

While big dry flies make for heart stopping takes and thrilling action, nymph fishing also has its place in NZ. A selection of well weighted nymphs are essential and will often fool the fussier fish.

Big mountains and clear rivers – heaven!

The cabbage tree is common in the Southern part of the South Island.

The moment of joy – a big fish in the net!

Gin clear water

Filming remote

Releasing a nice rainbow.

Blue skies and a bent fly rod – this is the epitomy of fly fishing the South Island in summer.

Brown with a big dry fly

The humble cicada. This large insect provides quite a meal for the trout during the summer months so much so that they will often move quite a distance to take one. At the peak of the cicada hatch the fish lose all inhibitions – this is a time when some of the biggest fish are fooled.

In NZ a trophy trout is any trout over 10 pounds, this magnificent fish topped the scales at 10 他 lb and was the highlight of Silvio Caldelari (pictured) season.

A boat and GPS are handy tools to have when exploring the wilderness.

A unique and powerful landscape.

Brown trout predominate in the South Island but there are plenty of big rainbow trout around to spice things up.
