FIVE THOUGHTS AND UPDATES Mike Dragosavich Publisher, Bison Illustrated drago@fmspotlight.com
I
am proud to bring back a note for all you readers. I want to share with you my mentality on Bison Athletics, alumni, Team Makers, fans and the future of Bison Illustrated. I feel as if we are on an incredible momentum swing with Bison Athletics (duh). But, now how do we, meaning fans, alumni, and anyone else who is affected by the Bison success give back and come together to make this entire program stronger. Here are some examples of what goes on in my head.
1. Show that pride! Why do I always see so many people proudly showing off their Concordia rings all over town? I rarely see NDSU alumni rings. I would love to see more proud alumni showing off the tradition.
2. We are all in it together! It’s unfortunate but I feel like almost twice a month I hear about another benefit for someone in town that has connections to most of our readers. Myself and my staff at Bison Illustrated are working on something called the “One Herd Mentality.” The idea is to promote that we are all in this together. We are going to feature different athletes and coaches who are taking time out of their schedules to visit someone or help out with projects or people in need of comfort, motivation and support. The second angle of this mission is to provide a resource to

everyone so that we can all pitch in to help. We want anyone with information about benefits or people who need help to reach out to us with that information. In return we will publish through print and web this information and promote it to everyone we can. Ideally this will be a centralized location that makes finding information about these causes easy.
more. (Forbes and Inc Magazine use the same platform.) Basically, what we did was add 50 pages of content including extended interviews, behind the scenes photos and video, NDSU clips from Youtube and a ton more.
3. Learn more about how you can help.
5. Thanks Advertisers!
I have had an opportunity to learn how endowments and donations work with either the Alumni Development Association or Team Makers. It’s amazing how many misconceptions I had about minimum amounts to donate, monthly payments and the rewards and benefits. I encourage you to ask questions or visit the websites. For $10 a month you can make an impact. Who knew it could be so easy?
4. Bison Illustrated is coming to tablets and mobile devices. I am super pumped to announce that we are now extending our publication to the Apple App Store, Kindle Store and Google Play. This means Bison Illustrated will be available to read and interact on almost all your phones and tablets. The coolest part is the extra features. We found a company out of New York that has set us up with an unbelievable platform to integrate video, links, audio, photos and
Start searching the App stores including the newsstand in Apple devices for Bison Illustrated to get it.
Advertising is a word that has a lot of meaning to it. I studied advertising at NDSU and I surround my life around it everyday with the three other publications we produce. When it comes to advertising in Bison Illustrated, I really want everyone to know that it’s one of a kind. What I mean is that all of these companies and individuals who advertise are truly more that just advertisers. They are supporters! Supporters of NDSU and our publication. And just like NDSU, when we get support, we try to take it and invest it back and make more of an impact. I want to thank all of our supporters and let everyone know that we are taking the financial contributions and using it to extend the distribution and quality of Bison Illustrated. The more we can expose Bison Illustrated, the more we can influence new fans, recruits, and naysayers to get on board with the NDSU tradition.
Go Bison,

First off, I want to congratulate you guys for coming out
during GameDay to support not only NDSU, but the city of Fargo. It was truly an amazing day and an experience that you will never forget. Unless you were packed inside of Dempsey’s enjoying one, two or eight Bloody Mary’s. But that’s neither here or there. In all seriousness, I cannot begin to tell you how honored I was to be roaming the streets of Broadway with all of you Bison faithful, creating a scene for a national viewing audience that will never be replicated. In the words of the great Barney Stinson, it was legendary! I couldn’t tell you how many emails, texts, tweets and Facebook messages I got from friends across the country telling me how cool Fargo looked during GameDay. Fargo was more than the epicenter of the college football world, it was the capital of the world for three hours. Yes, the TV time was great for the University; yes, the amount of business brought in was great for downtown; but what will be treasured most are the memories that were made that Saturday. You cannot put a price on that. It was an honor to share it with you all and it is an honor to have been a part of such an amazing team that put this GameDay scrapbook (as we have been calling it) together for you to cherish whenever you want to look back at one of the greatest days in Fargo history. Success and notoriety comes in waves so enjoy the ride, Bison fans. Stay humble, but make sure you never forget how much butt you kicked while showing the world what Bison Nation is all about!

MEET THE PRESIDENT
State of the bison with
What makes the rich tradition at NDSU more unique than any other place?
"A variety of factors make NDSU unique among its major research university peers. First is the relatively consistent cultural, demographic and economic base of our state; by and large we all share the same backgrounds and values. And more than most states, North Dakota is amazingly similar today relative to its history. Also, because of the state’s modest population relative to most others, we are much closer knit that is common or even practical in larger states; it’s the notion of being just one town with really long streets! And finally, NDSU’s enrollment is only one half to one third that of most of our major research university peers, which results in a much tighter and sincere sense of campus community and shared experiences than is possible at universities of 30,000 - 50,000 students."
What has been the reaction from other universities after the football team defeated Kansas State? "Simply put: respect. Our peers have known that we are on an academic trajectory similar to the top 108 private and public universities in the nation, and they knew that we have one of the overall ‘winningest’ athletic programs
14
B i s o n I l l u s t r a t e d • O c t o be r 2 013
in the NCAA Division-I. But beating the defending Big 12 champions, on their home field, in front of the second largest crowd in stadium history, on a come from behind basis, with a coast to coast national television audience legitimized our academic and athletic success in a more broadly visible and undeniable manner than just about anything else could. I was in the Houston airport recently just before the Texas A&M vs. Alabama game; the place was swarming with rabid fans from both teams. But the ‘NDSU’ tag on my bag had one person after another approaching me to talk about how impressed they were, and ask questions about our University!"
The football team is providing a lot of exposure for NDSU; how is the university as a whole using it to its advantage? We are seizing on that as a fantastic mechanism for drawing attention to far more than athletics. Almost a half million people ‘hit’ our various websites and Facebook pages after the win, and we’ve used that to point them to everything else going on at NDSU… and they are doing just that! They are looking at NDSU, and North Dakota more broadly, in both frequency and depth well past what has been our experience in the past. That’s a story about our university and state that is completely unrelated to what currently most puts us in the news: energy extraction. And it completely reframes what people think about NDSU and North Dakota are about.
Why is it important to have homecoming back downtown?
“We are a tight knit community not just in the sense of campus, but in the sense of the ‘community in a community’ we represent. The strength and vitality of NDSU is in large part reflective of the strength and vitality of the Fargo metro area. In particular that is complemented by the vibrant and growing historic downtown area, which has led to Fargo being ranked by many national publications as one of the ‘best college towns’ in the nation. The core of that designation is the historic downtown area which is walking distance from campus.”
Anything you want to say to Bison Nation? "This is 'our day.' It’s our day to be a beacon that draws respect, attention and accolades to our state and the people we serve. It’s our day for people in our state, and even more importantly people outside of our state, to see NDSU as the top-tier research university it has become. It’s our day for people everywhere to see the impact of NDSU and the exciting changes taking place in North Dakota. Bottom line is that it’s our day to completely recalibrate what comes to mind when people hear the words 'North Dakota.'"

MEET THE ALTHETIC DIRECTOR
Real Talk With
GENE
Taylor What’s the reaction been like from the national media after the football team beat Kansas State?
"The reaction to the Kansas State win has been amazing. The national attention we received during the entire first weekend of college football is something you cannot put a price on. The other side of the reaction was our colleagues across the country whether it be coaches or athletic administrators that reached out to congratulate Coach Bohl which is a great compliment as they really know not only how big the victory was, but more impressive was the way in which those players rose to the challenge being down 14 points and come back and win with one of the most impressive drives in program history."
Coach Bohl has an amazing 7-3 record against FBS opponents; what do you think has been the key to his success? "Coach Bohl’s success is based on several issues. Certainly his ability to lead and inspire his assistants and
16
B i s o n I l l u s t r a t e d • O c t o be r 2 013
his players to get them prepared for these big games is exceptional. He is very consistent with his approach whether we are playing a Colorado State or a Kansas State in terms of practice and preparation. He has the unique ability to know when to push and when to pull back at critical times leading up to those games. He and his staff plan and execute very efficient and productive practices, not only for the FBS opponents, but all opponents evidenced by a 28-2 and back-to-back National Championships the last two years. Finally, he is just an excellent football coach that has a tremendous talent for identifying and recruiting outstanding football players, many of which could be successful at the various FBS teams he has had success against."
Recently, NDSU athletics as a whole has been extremely successful; how can you keep the momentum going forward? "We have excellent coaches and staff throughout our entire department. One of my biggest joys and sources of comfort is I have the pleasure of
coming to work every day with a very talented, dedicated and extremely hard working group of coaches, administrators and staff. I know, with the upmost of confidence, our staff’s goal is to figure out how we continue to move our program forward and keep the momentum we have. There is never any doubt in my mind they come to work every day with the goal of putting the program in position of winning championships and promoting all of the programs at the highest level."
How about the amount of support that you have seen from Bison Nation? "We have the best, most supportive and passionate fan base in the country. We would not have enjoyed the success we have had the last few years without their enthusiasm and support. One of the keys to continuing to keep the momentum and moving the program forward is keeping our fans engaged and passionate."

It took workers six and a half hours to set up the impressive stage that all of Fargo would gather around on Saturday morning.
Bison fans couldn’t help but get excited about their city being the location of a morning television show that is viewed by five million people each hour. The show brought in a crowd around 4,500 and had a massive economical impact between $4-8 million.

It takes a small army to put together College GameDay every week. The most popular television program covering college football travels from place to place every week highlighting different programs. This schedule of traveling makes the fact that they are able to put together such an impressive program week after week even more amazing. From their headquarters in the old Mahoney’s bar off of Broadway, they were able to put together a three-hour program that turned Fargo into one of the best College GameDay experiences of all time.

Welcome to a Boom Town, where the business is winning championships, building a dynasty. North Dakota State is the FCS unanimous number one, now pointing at a three-peat. And this is a scene that’s got to be seen and heard to be believed. As loud and proud and crazy, as invested as any hotbed anywhere. What’s College GameDay without the signs? Everywhere the show travels one thing is constant; clever signs from all over come to the party and this was Fargo’s time to shine. As Jeff Foxworthy would say, ‘Here’s your sign...”

Beefed Up Patrick Fahey brought the heat with his sign. GameDay crew plus the Chippendale performers, how did he come up with this!? “Actually, it was Saul Phillips idea. He wanted me to do it of him, but then I figured I had a better chance of getting on TV if I did the hosts...He just wanted him posing and it saying '100% Bison Beef.'"
Gameday
hopefuls “I believe the exact phrase was, ‘If you won’t bring GameDay to Pullman then we’ll bring Pullman to GameDay,’” Jessica Graham said as she proudly waved ‘Ol’ Crimson’ back and forth in the back of the rowdy GameDay crowd. Fifty-three FBS schools have hosted GameDay in its 20 year history of going on the road. Washington State University is not one of them. The closest the Cougars ever got to host Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and the rest of the gang was in 2003. After defeating No. 15 ranked Oregon in Eugene, the possibility of GameDay coming to Pullman, Wash. was finally a reality for Cougar fans in the Apple State. Unfortunately, the GameDay crew never came. Ever since, Washington State Alumni have been working together to make sure the Cougar presence is felt in every college town GameDay visits. Ol’ Crimson has made 136 consecutive appearances at College GameDay starting Oct. 18, 2003, in Madison, WI. “We recently brought in the gray one,” Ryan Lundgrigan, a Washington State alum who works in St. Paul, MN said. A white flag used to accompany Ol’ Crimson until former Cougar football star Steve Gleason came down with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2011 while playing for the New Orleans Saints. “We retired the flag in his name,” Lundgrigan said. “His foundation is ‘No White Flags.’” GameDay prides itself on their unpredictably, but one thing is always certain; Washington State Alumni will always be doing their duty and waving Ol’ Crimson high and proud until GameDay finally makes a stop in Pullman.

Phil Hansen was a no brainer for ESPN when selecting a celebrity picker for the GameDay broadcast. This former NDSU All-American made a living chasing down opposing quarterbacks during his career with the Buffalo Bills. He didn’t fair as well selecting the winners live on ESPN going 4-5 in the College GameDay pick ‘ems.

A Pair of Corsos When you picture College GameDay, Lee Corso's face comes to mind. Now when you think of Bison, you should think of the baby bison that was named in honor of College GameDay’s iconic host. Corso started wearing the mascot head back in 1996 when he put on Brutus Buckeye's mascot head when he picked Ohio State to beat Penn State. It has quickly become a popular sight every Saturday.

WHERE Tyler Roehl solidified his place in Bison history with a miraculous 263-yard performance against the University of Minnesota back in 2007, but now Coach Roehl is making noise in the FargoMoorhead area as the defensive coordinator at Moorhead High. We took a proper angle and chased down the formerBison running back to talk about his experience in the NFL and when he knew it was time to trade in his cleats for a whistle.

COLD DELIVERED.
High Steppin’
Foot in the Door
Tyler Roehl had just signed as an undrafted free agent with the Seattle Seahawks and was focused on continuing the success he had enjoyed while at North Dakota State University in the NFL.
CL_Cold Delivered_4-75x4-75_08381-7 JC.indd 1
7/30/13 9:03 AM
“I was doing well; the coaches were giving me great feedback and it was just kind of a fluke injury,” Roehl said slowly, remembering like it happened yesterday.
“I had a strong feeling that it was not good. But you know what, you get the results, it’s a torn ACL. There was always a quote in the NDSU training room ‘Tough times don’t last; tough people do.’” Roehl remembered all the hard work he had put in throughout his high school days at West Fargo High School, where he raised two state championship trophies, and his days of stardom in the backfield for the Bison from 2004 - 2008. After spending the 2009 season on IR, Roehl was released by the Seahawks. Roehl wasn’t ready to give up on his NFL dreams just yet. He got an opportunity to try-out for the Minnesota Vikings, but the timing couldn’t have been worse for the ailing Roehl. “My knee was not where it needed to be for that tryout. But I went and gave it my best,” Roehl explained. “They had just drafted Toby Gerhart, a very similar running back to me, and it wasn’t in my favor to say the least.” Roehl was right and was cut by the Vikings during training camp. With his playing days over and surrounded by an ample amount of support from friends, family and former coaches, Roehl knew he had to stay involved with football. “When he got hurt with Seattle I said, ‘now you’ll just have to pick up the whistle,’” Tim Polasek, Roehl’s former running back coach at NDSU, said. “I think his first reaction was just to do that because it was so natural for him to be around the game, be involved with the locker room and other coaches and players.” Polasek’s relationship with Roehl started early in Polasek’s coaching career. He arrived at NDSU in 2006 during Roehl’s sophomore season as a graduate assistant. “I have a great relationship with him to this day,” Roehl said. “A guy I can call when I need anything. He was the guy that said when you’re done playing, you’re getting a whistle.” It didn’t take long for Roehl and Polasek’s coaching paths to cross. During the 2011 season, Roehl returned to his alma mater to become the offensive assistant working underneath Polasek who was working as the recruiting coordinator and running backs coach at NDSU. Seeing each other as peers helped Roehl and Polasek’s relationship blossom. Now, both plan to be in each other’s weddings next spring.
Creating a Coach
Roehl coached at NDSU for one season, and in that short time, the work ethic you need to blossom into a good college coach was pushed upon him. The 2011 Bison finished the season in Frisco raising their first FCS National Championship trophy and it was an unforgettable experience for the young Roehl. “You put in a lot of time and effort to have a winning team… The main thing is that hard work pays off and to be prepared,” Roehl said remembering his experience coaching football at the Division-1 level. “Preparation creates separation.” What has separated Roehl from other young coaches is his resilience to work harder than anyone else. From NDSU, Roehl bounced around until he took up a job teaching physical education at Moorhead High School. Roehl has recently been promoted to defensive coordinator for the varsity football team and is in charge of the strength and conditioning program for all of the Spud athletes. “My philosophy is based off of three words,” Roehl said. “Commit, prepare and compete. If you commit yourself to the team, commit yourself to school, commit yourself to the weight room… your preparation will make you a better player.”
QUick Facts • Two-Time Football State Champion at West Fargo High School • Rushing Yards: 2,512 • Total Touchdowns: 36 • Most Rushing Yards In A Game- 263 (Bison Record)
Coach Polasek, now the tight ends coach at Northern Illinois University, isn’t surprised by the way Roehl has scaled up the coaching ranks, remembering how Roehl once fumbled during a game after being named the starter. “He almost fumbled one, maybe two more times after that ever.” Polasek believes it’s Roehl’s attention to detail that made him a great player and a good coach. Now at the age of 26, Roehl says he’s truly happy coaching the Spud football team, although his former coach and colleague thinks one day he’ll be a head coach. “That all comes down to what his aspirations are,” Polasek said. “There’s a big spot in his heart for that Fargo-West Fargo-Moorhead area. I wouldn’t be shocked for him to be the head coach at any one of those three really good high schools and still be there 20 years from now.” Roehl has already cemented his legacy running the football for the Bison. Now the coach, Roehl isn’t going anywhere and is in the beginning stages to what’s shaping up to be an unforgettable coaching career.

Coach Roehl’s coaching philosophy:
• Commit- “Commit yourself to the team, commit yourself to school and commit yourself to the weight room.”

Since John Crockett
joined Sam Ojuri in the backfield, the two have been a terrorizing one-two punch for defenses. Having a timeshare in the end zone is a tough thing for two great running backs on the same team, so we sat down with both players to see how fierce the competition is between the two stars.
What drives you to be the best one-two punch in the nation? John Crockett: “The competition between each other. The biggest thing about it is that I’m the biggest cheerleader in his corner, but I’m also one of his biggest critics and vice versa. He’s the one that knows exactly what we’re looking for, how we’re supposed to execute and what it looks like when it’s not getting done. He’ll get right on my tail about what I need to be doing.” Sam Ojuri: “We get to throw different looks at defenses. We’re like the same, but we’re still different. It can throw defenses off whack. Two fresh legs is better than a pair of one.”
Throughout your time here, you’ve been a part of some great running back tandems. What’s it like working with Crockett? Sam Ojuri: “It’s fun because he’s a different guy. With
John, you’re always going to get a couple laughs no matter the situation. When he came in, he pushed me to be better. We push each other to be better every day. It’s definitely a great experience.”
Explain the leadership role that the running backs have found themselves in. Sam Ojuri: “Being the running backs, it’s one of the
toughest positions. You always have to keep your head up because we have always have to keep the offense going. We always have to set the example. Whether it’s me or whether it’s John, Derrick, Chase or Darius, the running back in this offense always has to set an example. The rest of the offense follows with.”
John Crockett
In what ways are you two still getting better? John Crockett: “We’re learning how to be meticulous, and when I say that I mean we are learning the finer points of what it takes to be a great running back. Not just being able to run the ball or not just being able to catch it every now and then; it’s about learning why plays are how they are and where are my blocks going to be.”
What do you have to say about ‘The Rams’ and the O-line that’s blocking for you? Sam Ojuri: “Being on an offensive line isn’t easy. Those
guys thrive on beating down other defenses and opening holes. I just can’t ask for more. Those guys put it all on the field. It’s not only ‘The Rams’ but it’s the tight ends, full backs and receivers out there blocking. Everyone is out there doing their jobs. That makes it that much easier.”
We have to ask, who’s rushing for more yards this year? Sam Ojuri: “Definitely me.” (Laughs)
John, Sam is winning by a slim margin right now. John Crockett: “I'm gonna get him.”

TAILGATING Cloverdale's
Big Flavor Tour Calls FargoDome A Home Photos by Matthew Sather
The big question everyone has been asking is what's the new big thing at Bison football tailgating?
Phil Robins (left) and Joe Savagueu (right) with Cloverdale explain the exciting happenings of the Big Flavor Tour.
Look no further, Cloverdale’s Big Flavor Tour has exactly what you are looking for. What better way to prepare for a NDSU football game than enjoying authentic, North Dakotan premiumgrade meat. Cloverdale Foods Company has been family owned for nearly a century and has roots that can be traced back to Mandan, so you know you’re getting a little taste of North Dakota in every bite.
Fans of all ages can come out and try all the delicious food. Bison fans’ appetites have no age limit.
What is the Big Flavor Tour?
"The tour is named after Cloverdale’s third generation owner, Don Russell, who carved a lasting legacy in the company. Don’s love for barbecue and smoked meats led Cloverdale to focus on quality processed meats, which is still the main focus of the company today. His commitment to the community, family values, and unsurpassed quality and flavor expectations are what fueled the idea behind the Big Flavor Tour. The touring unit includes a fully equipped 40-foot kitchen trailer and promotional truck."
Why is it important for Cloverdale to get involved with Bison tailgating?
What does the company hope to accomplish with the Big Flavor tour?
"Tailgating at NDSU is a big celebration and we’re excited to be a part of it! Cloverdale has proudly supported the Bison over the past few years giving out free samples at Cloverdale’s VIP tent thanks to NDSU’s BBQ Bootcamp team. This will be the first year with both the BBQ Bootcamp and Don Russell’s Big Flavor Tour trailers."
"The tour was developed to build a deeper relationship with our consumers through product sampling and interaction. You’ll find exclusive recipe and serving suggestion ideas, valuable coupons and freshly prepared Big Flavor products. Visit cloverdalefoods.com to sign up for our fan club, the Taste Buds, or find us on Facebook."
Every week, Cloverdale will have different samples for hungry Bisons to try.
How to participate.
You can participate in the Tour before every Bison home game in the tailgating lot in an area called "Thundar Alley." This is where you can enjoy all the Big Flavor products, receive cool promotional items and test your football skills. You can also sign up for the "Taste Buds" fan club online for your chance to win Tangy Summer Sausage! 82

WALKER’S WORD welcomed the crew from ESPN with open arms. Heck, we even named a baby Bison after Lee Corso and he walked it out of the Fargo Theatre with Thundar’s head on. What a cool experience for not only us fans, but the players, coaches and administrators at NDSU. I was able to talk with some teammates and have a great time as we took in the festivities downtown and the common theme was “not in a million years could we see this coming to Fargo.”
GameDay, Tradition and Senioritis By Steve Walker |
A
s I look back to December 2002, I was sitting in class as a senior in high school. Admittedly, I think I had a case of senioritis and when recruiters came in and got me out of class I couldn’t be happier. One day, the school’s secretary came and asked me to come down and talk with Coach Glenn Caruso from NDSU. My first reaction was, “they have colleges in North Dakota?” After a number of visits with Coach Caruso and my first visit to Fargo, I realized that this was where I wanted to go to school and play football. Fast-forward almost 11 years to today and I can’t imagine a better life decision than coming to Fargo, where I am proud to now call home. As I look back over the time I have been in Fargo, both as a student-athlete at NDSU and now a family man working in our great community, I have to smile as I see the great changes that have happened with NDSU and Fargo.
“We need to be grateful to cheer for the premier university in FCS and continue to support the Thundering Herd!”
On Saturdays during football season when the Bison are at home, the FargoDome transforms into one of the largest (and loudest) cities in the great state of North Dakota. Season ticket requests now exceed the number available, and single game tickets sell out in less than two hours from becoming available. Do Bison fans like Bison Football? No, we LOVE Bison football! Sept. 21, 2013 will be remembered as one of the biggest days for NDSU and Fargo when ESPN’s College GameDay came to Fargo and our great community was in the spotlight. No one really knows how many people were downtown, but there were a lot! Bison fans came out by the thousands and

By the way, there was a game that Saturday and the Thundering Herd came out of it with a convincing shutout victory and a 3-0 record staying on top of the polls at number one in the nation for FCS. What has been the biggest factor in the transformation? The players? Coach Bohl? Gene Taylor? Joe Chapman? Bison Nation? I think it has been a collaboration of all these things and as fans we have to feel very lucky that we are in the position that we are today. Next on the menu is conference play, and the Missouri Valley Conference is as tough as it gets. Not only is it the best conference in all of FCS, but it is the most physical. The Bison are diving right in with the first two opponents being SDSU in Brookings for the Dakota Marker and UNI in Fargo for what has become a great game every year. This type of conference schedule has proven to prepare the Bison for the playoffs and hopefully another run to Frisco, Texas (which is becoming a home away from home for the Bison and the Bison Nation).
As we prepare as fans for another great conference season watching the Herd week in and week out, make sure to remember where we have come from since transitioning to Division-1. NDSU has the groundwork in place, a great history of success and a team that is phenomenal. We need to be grateful to cheer for the premier university in FCS and continue to support the Thundering Herd! GO BISON! *Steve Walker started 36 games as quarterback for the Bison between 2004 - 2007. He holds school records for pass attempts in a game, pass completion percentage, yards gained passing in a game and touchdown passes in a single game.

Boy, Do We Travel Well! By Jim Hambrik
W
hat a fantastic start to the fall sports season at NDSU. The huge win by the Bison football team at Kansas State was another example of how far the athletic programs have progressed since the switch to Division I. Congratulations to all of the players and coaches for this significant victory.
“Boy, do we travel well! It was great to see all 4,000 to 5,000 of us Bison fans journey to Manhattan, Kansas to the cheer on our favorite team.”
As I had the opportunity to attend yet another Bison game away from the FargoDome, it got me to thinking — Boy, do we travel well! It was great to see all 4,000 to 5,000 of us Bison fans journey to Manhattan, KS to cheer on our favorite team. Whether it is 20,000 plus fans traveling to Minneapolis or 15,000 (or more) to Frisco, TX or a strong contingent to all the conference games, the show of support has certainly grown over the past years. And, thank you to Sherri Schmidt and the NDSU Alumni Association for the great pre-game events they organize and host!
But it isn’t just the number of fans that really impresses me; it is the class in which we handle ourselves that I think is particularly important. Numerous times on my trips to away games, our hosts from other schools have been very complimentary to our team and our fans. During the trip to Kansas, my crew had to make a number of convenience store stops for gas and snacks (and yes, restroom breaks). At almost every store we visited, c-store staff and customers commented on how many NDSU supporters they had encountered and all of them wished us well.

So, I think all NDSU Team Makers and fans should give yourselves a deserved pat on the back for the support you provide to the student athletes and the respect you give our opponents. We want to continue cheering on our teams at home and away competitions by showing up in large numbers and acting in a first class manner. NDSU is definitely getting some impressive national exposure with the first game on Fox Sports One and ESPN Game Day being in Fargo. Not only has the performance of the NDSU student athletes caught the attention of the national media, but also our strong fan support has been an influence. Naturally, as a Team Maker, I hope all of this attention will help grow our membership. Under the current leadership of Ken Zetocha (President) and Paul Bougie (Fund Drive Chair), our numbers both in terms of members and dollars have hit new records. We now have over 2,300 members and I would bet someday soon we’ll set a goal for 3,000 or more. To do this, it is extremely helpful to have the national exposure NDSU is earning so that alumni throughout the country can get excited and join us. It is very easy to sign up! Just check out our tab at gobison.com or call 701-231-9555.
As the Kansas State/NDSU game came to an end and I looked around our Bison section, I couldn’t have been more proud of the athletic program under Gene Taylor’s leadership and our fans. So again, take a bow Bison fans. Please keep up the support for all of the student athletes. * Jim Hambrik is a proud Team Makers member. Welcome to Boom City, where the business is winning championships By Josh Swanson |
I
f Fargo didn’t have a nickname before, we have one now, courtesy ESPN College GameDay host Chris Fowler. Fargo has been christened Boom City. And what do we do in Boom City? It’s pretty simple. The business is winning championships, at least according to Fowler. Fowler gave downtown Fargo a rousing introduction – an introduction worthy of Theodore Roosevelt, bully! – to a national television audience and the entire sports world when College GameDay made its first of what will hopefully be many trips to Boom City on Sept. 21. Broadcasting from Broadway with downtown completely draped in green and yellow, Bison banners and flags hanging from buildings, people raising the horns from balconies and posters of all kinds on full display in storefront windows, Fowler issued a proclamation that summarized a passionate fanbase that has evolved into Bison Nation. “Welcome to a Boom Town, where the business is winning championships, building a dynasty. … And this is a scene that’s got to be seen, and heard to be believed. As loud and proud and crazy, as invested as any hotbed anywhere. College GameDay, for the first time, roams to the home of the Mighty North Dakota State Bison.”
“Boom City has gained a nationwide reputation for a fan base, university, community and state completely behind our Bison.”
As they say, our reputation precedes us and was touted by ESPN during the three hour broadcast. You guys need to understand; GameDay doesn’t see that sort of passion with the “big boys.” It wasn’t flattery when GameDay co-host Kirk Herbstreit said the bar had been raised for every other school because of GameDay’s week in Fargo. What about South Bend, Indiana, home of Notre Dame? Nope, that leprechaun can’t get half as crazy as Bison Nation, even on St. Patrick’s Day with a five hour head start. What say you, Bucky Badger in Wisconsin? If anywhere is just as crazy, it’d be the place where the official state meal is thick beer, cheese and bratwurst. Sorry, no discount double check for you. Bison Nation could hold our own on State Street in Madison any day of the week and twice on Saturday. Don’t believe me? Ask Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney why he doesn’t want his teams scheduling the mighty Bison from Boom City. None of the “big boys” want any part of us. Just ask Kansas State. When you mess with the Bison, you get the horns! Our fan base – you, me, us – that gets together every weekend in the west lot of the FargoDome is not an FCS fan base. We’re big time. We are every part as good and then some as our Big Ten and Big XII cousins. Well, if you can’t beat ‘em — or in our case, if you can beat ‘em — join ‘em. We belong on that stage, week in and week out. The next Boise State? No, in ten years, college football fans and ESPN will be referring to up-andcomers as the next North Dakota State. 92

@swany8
Part of the reason GameDay picked Fargo was you – our unbelievably committed fan base. Fowler said it himself, we’re loud, proud, and crazy. Bison Nation travels by the thousands, from here to Frisco, Manhattan, Fort Collins, Brookings, Minneapolis and everywhere in between. But it’s not just the travel, it’s entire sections of away stadiums swathed in yellow and decidedly committed to the Herd. Can you imagine being an athletic director from, oh, I don’t know, say South Dakota State, where chants of “Bison home game” echo throughout your stadium? Or how about the boosters of the same school, looking out on a tailgating scene where there are more Bison big rigs, buses, trailers and fans than in their own backyard? What about the head coach from Sam Houston State in a national championship game at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, only a few short hours from his campus, and the stands are decked in green and yellow? Boom City has gained a nationwide reputation for a fan base, university, community and state completely behind our Bison. We gave the boys and gals from ESPN a show they won’t soon forget. The atmosphere was electric. Again, don’t take my words. Listen to how GameDay’s senior producer described it. Keep in mind, this is the guy who picks the sites each week, scripts the show and has seen it all from Gainesville, Florida to Lincoln, Nebraska, major towns in the GameDay landscape. “This is a combination of College GameDay meets Wrigley Field meets champion league soccer intensity,” said Lee Fitting, in describing Fargo. “We’ll make it a yearly stop if everything falls into place. Again, one of the alltime best spots.”
One of the all-time best spots. That’s not lip service, either. I’ve watched GameDay since I was a kid growing up on the prairie and playing 9-man football. What we did on ESPN was something never seen in the entire 21-year history of the biggest show in college football. We are one of the hottest tickets in college sports right now, and the sky is the limit. There is practically nothing that this university can’t do if it wants to. Why? The people, Bison Nation, the Herd. During a featured segment on the GameDay broadcast, reporter Tom Rinaldi asked Bison rancher and NDSU supporter Greg Maddock what is the power in the Herd. Maddock’s answer was perfect in describing the mindset of the Herd. “As far as the individual there isn’t such a thing with Bison because if one animal would get out of the fence the whole herd would go with him. They’re very much a team animal.” I guess you could say the same thing about our team and fan base. ESPN gave us so much that weekend. But it’s not like we didn’t give something back, besides the Emmy-worthy television and an atmosphere that raised the bar for every other GameDay broadcast this year. We gave them some of our Herd mentality to take with on the road. We did something no other GameDay crowd has done in 21 years. At the show’s conclusion, Lee Corso walked the red carpet out of the Fargo Theatre with a young Bison calf wearing Thundar’s head. The young Bison calf had been christened Corso, after his namesake, the man famous for putting on mascot heads from Alabama’s elephant to Oregon’s duck. Joining that list is NDSU’s Bison. And why wouldn’t we, this is Boom City after all. Everyone up for the kickoff, the march is on!
