A Tradition of Generosity in the Heartland

ince its inception in 2008, Giving Hearts Day has grown into one of the most significant charitable events in North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. Organized by the Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF), Impact Foundation, and the Alex Stern Family Foundation, this annual 24-hour giving extravaganza has raised nearly $195 million to support a variety of charities across the region. What began as a single day for giving has evolved into a community movement, promoting generosity, innovation, and inclusivity across the charitable giving sector.

What Is Giving Hearts Day?

Held annually on the second Thursday in February, Giving Hearts Day is both a fundraiser and a celebration of community. This year, the event falls on February 13, with early giving opportunities available from January 13 to February 12. This extension allows donors more flexibility to participate and ensures no one misses the chance to contribute.

Whether through financial donations, volunteering time, or donating goods, the event and GHD ambassadors invite everyone to embrace the mentality of "Give your way." This inclusive approach has made Giving Hearts Day a standout initiative, encouraging participation from all walks of life through different avenues. Giving doesn't just mean money!

Innovating the Way We Give

Last year, GHD took a significant leap forward with the launch of a new online tool.

This user-friendly feature allows donors to:

• Track financial contributions

• Locate drop-off points for goods

• Record volunteer hours

This innovation simplifies the giving process and creates transparency in contributions of all kinds—monetary, physical goods, or time—as they are recorded and displayed on the

website. Plus, it showcases the collective impact in real time!

The "Henry the Heart" mascot was introduced to serve as not only a fun a element, but a funcitonal one. At dropoff A locations, donors can scan a QR code displayed alongside Henry to register their contributions. This seamless integration of technology and creativity sparked new levels of engagement, doing what the Giving Hearts Day team and the community have done best— make the act of giving both charitable and enjoyable.

Both businesses and individuals are encouraged to participate in the annual event, here are a few ways you can make an impact:

Host a goods drive: Businesses receive a toolkit to promote the initiative, including a "Henry the Heart" cutout to spark excitement!

Volunteer: Record your time using the website’s tracking tool.

Make early donations: Take advantage of the extended giving period from January 13 to February 12.

Looking

As Giving Hearts Day continues to grow, its future looks just as sweet. The integration of technology, community engagement, and inclusivity makes sure the over a decade old tradition stays relevant and easy to participate in a rapidly evolving world.

Mark your calendars for February 13, 2025 and join in this celebration of giving. Whether it’s your first time or a long-standing tradition, there’s a place for everyone in the heart of Giving Hearts Day!

A Growing Tradition

Giving Hearts Day has grown exponentially since its humble beginnings. In 2024 alone, new tools and strategies led to heightened community involvement, with more people than ever choosing to give in their own unique ways.

DREAM EVENTS COME TO LIFE

INSIDE THE SUCCESS OF SIGNATURE EVENTS

ince May 2014, Renée Murrish has carved quite a niche for herself in the Bismarck-Mandan community with Signature Events Mandan, where she's turning the community's dreams into memorable realities to be shared. With over 1,500 events under its belt, Signature Events was created from a passion for helping people in BismarckMandan, a love of details, and event planning. Murrish's operation, though individually run, collaborates with a range of professionals, bringing

anywhere from 3 to 23 different elements together for any given event.

This collaborative approach allows Signature Events Mandan to offer unique, comprehensive service packages to the customer. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Murrish to discuss Signature Events' acquisition of the historic 1929 Mandan Depot, the growing event planning community in Bismarck-Mandan, and how readers can have dreams brought to life through events!

Murrish's journey into the world of event planning began with a drive to do something new. After dedicating some years to raising her family, Murrish felt a desire to re-engage with the professional world, drawing on one of her favorite aspects from her past corporate experiences—event planning. Despite initial uncertainties about the demand for event planning services in the Bismarck-Mandan area, Murrish conducted thorough research and identified a gap in the market for professional event planning services.

"I didn't know if it was viable in the area since it's not around here, so I did my research, and it turned out that a lot of people around this area thought that a planner was the same thing as a decorator, so there was a gap in the market. Despite that gap, our work was still cut out for us. We had to introduce the 'event planner' concept to our region; it took about three years for the concept to get acknowledged, but after a lot of education, hard work, and dedication, it all paid off," Murrish said.

"Now, event planners are starting to pop up and the concept of hiring an event planner for events has continued to grow substantially in our region, which makes me incredibly happy! I created what I thought would be a great business, and it turned out that plenty of other people thought so as well."

AN EXPANDING EVENT PLANNING COMMUNITY

Renée Murrish teaches once a semester at the University of Mary as a guest speaker on event planning to inspire local students.

"Nothing excites me more than local high school or college students who want to job shadow or complete their internship credits with Signature Events. They're the next generation of great event planners!" - Renée Murrish

ABOUT RENÉE MURRISH

"Event planning has been my passion for 25+ years. Since opening Signature Events, we've been a part of 1,500+ events. Planning corporate, nonprofit, weddings, and private events for our clients is a privilege that I do not take lightly. On top of our own event planning, we've been honored to go into other businesses and successfully create an 'event planning program and events' with their venue and staff."

ACQUIRING HISTORIC VENUES AMIDST CHALLENGES

Having settled into her business over the years in Mandan, business was good for Murrish. So good, in fact, that she was doing roughly 20 weddings a summer, which she primarily specializes in. However, when her second child came into the world, she recognized that "big" maybe didn't translate to "best" and that scaling back would be necessary.

Amidst some of the most severe parts of the COVID-19 pandemic, an idea for scaling back came to mind for Murrish when she noted that the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation would be terminating their lease on the 1929 Mandan Depot, which they've had as far back as the 1980s.

"When the foundation terminated its lease, I had to fight for the building to take it over. I was up against a few other options, but I was lucky enough for the city to see my vision when I pitched it to them," Murrish said. "They loved it because we're not only using a

DID YOU KNOW?

historic building, but we're also bringing people across the river. Now, I have the Mandan Depot through 2032.

While Murrish still engages in some off-site planning, the majority of her event planning work is for people looking to host their event in the historic Mandan Depot. "I've worked with enough venues and clients where I knew exactly what I wanted my venue to be. I wanted to do something unique and also have a small historic building that I could take pride in having, which is very unique in itself," Murrish said.

Signature Events at the Mandan Depot allows guests to bring their own food and beverages, including liquor, to their venue. Opting out of a liquor license, they ensure a flexible and personalized event experience with their own alcohol insurance plan in place. This policy offers a customizable and inclusive atmosphere for events.

Signature Events hosted a morning full of inspiration with the Bismarck Boss Babes and the NDWBC at the Mandan Depot!

While Signature Events Mandan has specialized in a wide range of events over the years, weddings are Murrish and Signature Events' primary focus. Murrish also works with a handful of nonprofit events, such as the Mandan Aero Center's annual Props and Hops. Furthermore, Murrish offers "office hours," where she engages in counseling and advisory work for others.

"People reach out for baby showers, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, corporate meetings, and more regarding what I'd recommend or checking that licenses have been fulfilled," Murrish said. "Sometimes people just want a second opinion or recommendation from someone that's been in the industry for a while, and I'm happy to be that supporting hand."

Looking to the future, Murrish is excited about mentoring future event planners, supporting the Bismarck-Mandan community, and continuing to offer a unique venue and exceptional planning services for years to come. "We

Signature Events' venue also features a play area for the little ones during all-ages events and gatherings.

look forward to continuing to help and be involved in our community, encourage and empower fellow entrepreneurs, and continue to provide great event planning services to clients so they can have the best signature event in town," Murrish said.

The support of the local community has been instrumental in the success of Signature Events Mandan. Murrish encourages local businesses and community members to continue spreading the word about the services offered by Signature Events Mandan, highlighting the power of reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations in driving the business forward. "I am beyond thankful to be a part of the Bismarck-Mandan community," Murrish said.

DID YOU KNOW?

Renée Murrish was nominated for the 2023 Women-Owned Business of the Year!

"Being able to guide clients through the planning process of 'Creating the Unforgettable' event they are so passionate about is the most rewarding feeling ever. Executing the event so the clients can 'Be A Guest at Their Own Event' fulfills the Signature Events mission."

- Renée Murrish

We're in heaven to be able to create a special space where 'Friends and Family Gather.' I love to enable my clients to enjoy the occasion they have a passion for and to be able to enjoy it with the people they love and/or what to succeed with at the next level of achievement." - Renée Murrish

A Q&A WITH RENÉE

MURRISH

Q: Between multiple children, Signature Events, board positions, nonprofits, and more, what can readers learn from how you manage a work-life balance at the end of the day?

A: It's become a lot easier since both of my children are in school now. I have seven hours and I make them count! It's also gotten easier being more established now than I was in the first five years of Signature Events. The more that Signature Events establishes itself, the more I feel that I don't need to answer an email or a phone call 30 seconds after it hits my inbox, which just comes with the maturity of the business.

Q: What's your favorite part of the process when event planning? What brings you the most satisfaction?

A: When someone first enters my office and they're super excited about their event. It's great to get that excitement and energy from them, and they light up when they hear a great idea. The second part is when I'm in the background of the event, making sure it's all running smoothly, and

they're enjoying their event, rather than feeling like they're working it.

My life hasn't always been sunshine, so it's my passion to help people and make someone's event experience unforgettable. I don't want anyone to feel unempowered or go through life's experiences alone, so this passion has been very rewarding and fulfilling to me.

Q: How can local businesses and community members contribute to your success?

A: Continue telling family, friends, and others about the services that we offer. Clients that we have had the privilege to work with who take the time to leave a review on Google and social media are truly priceless. I'm truly humbled by the organizations who have helped share our story with others and gotten the message out there, as it's crucial to Signature Events' future.

ADV I CE FROM RENÉE MURRISH

I love aspiring entrepreneurs and the energy, excitement, and passion they have for their ideas is contagious. Remember aspiring entrepreneurs:

Do your homework on your idea with an open mind. Sometimes your great idea needs to be tweaked to be viable right from the beginning, and that's okay! Most of the time it is for the better in the end.

Surround yourself with people who challenge your ideas and processes, push you, and encourage you to keep going.

Do not take criticism from someone whom you would not take advice from . Let that sink in!

There will be ups and downs; it's all part of the process.

Be flexible. Your business will take a few detours throughout the years and that is okay. Detours don't equal failure of your original idea. In my experience, after you get through the detour, you will look back and know it was an avenue to bigger successes.

Give yourself some grace. As business owners, we make decisions on the history we know, on the current information that we researched, and on what we can guess the future will be. Sometimes we are wrong, we are human, learn what you can and press on.

Don't give up! If it's your true passion, be creative and find another avenue to make it happen.

As Renée Murrish aims to make her mark on the BismarckMandan community with Signature Events, placing herself in the Mandan Depot is a fitting location to do so. What started as a gap in the market has flourished into a beloved business, due in part to Renée's hard work, vision, and the undeniable support from the community members of Bismarck-Mandan.

The Four Intangible Capitals

As we talk about business succession, there is, more often than not, a bank involved and is typically working with the buyer to obtain financing. We often hear about the 5 C's of credit and how that impacts the buyer's ability to obtain funding. However, there is also the 4 C's of capital that the business has, and this can make it more valuable and attractive to buyers. What are the 4 C's of intangible capital that a business has and moves to the best in class as it is compared to its peers?

Human Capital

Human capital is the value of your talent in your company. If you have a strong mixture of talent, experience, resilience, and motivation in your team, your company's value increases. All things being equal, the stronger your human capital, the more value the market will place your company. Strong companies believe accountability to each other is more important than to their boss or company.

Customer Capital

Customer capital is the measure of the strength of relationships with your best customers. Deep, integrated, tenured relationships and diversified customer bases—are all things that contribute to strong customer capital. The best-in-class companies regularly analyze profitability by customer and product.

Structural Capital

Structural capital is the back-end infrastructure of the company, such as your processes, your financials, your strategies, your information technology, your patents, and your intellectual property (IP). The documented know-how and know-what of the company positions you to be fast and flexible. Structural capital connects people to knowledge so it can be shared to enable your business to scale.

Social Capital

Social capital, or company culture, embraces the people. Social capital is what elevates a company to be best in class, as it is the optimization of the other three capitals. How they communicate, what they believe in, and how they operate internally and externally are key components of a company's culture. It is also shown in how your company contributes to its community. Social intelligence is one of the greatest predictors of success.

CONCLUSION

All of these items are seldom thought of as capital in the traditional sense. Still, hopefully, if you can look at things a bit differently, it is a way to begin a new conversation about building value and making a business the "Best in Class."

Are You Paying Too Much in Merchant Fees?

Over the last five years, point-of-sale technology has rapidly advanced. What once was a quarterly visit from multiple merchant companies trying to underbid each other’s rates has evolved into feature-rich integrated software solutions tied to your bank account.

Companies like Stripe and Square offer many services to assist business owners, like mobile swipe hardware that attaches to your phone, POS systems for retail stores, and turnkey websites with a shopping cart already set up. Of course, it all comes at a cost.

Stripe merchant fees are currently 2.9% + $0.30 a transaction. Square merchant fees now range from 2.6%-3.5% + $0.10-$0.30, depending on the type of transaction. In addition, you can also be charged a monthly fee depending on the software features and options you are using. While both services work great, they may be too expensive for many small business owners looking for cheaper alternatives. If you think your merchant fees are too high, you may inadvertently be paying for services you don’t need.

A quick glance at the interchange rates (the base rate Visa and Mastercard charge processing companies) puts most transaction fees in the 1%-2.5% per swipe range. The closer a business owner can negotiate fees near the interchange rates, the less is paid in fees.

Helcim recently became a competitor of both when they added a free monthly website with a shopping cart to their provided services. Helcimis currently advertising 1.8%-2.5% + $.08-$0.25 per transaction and has no monthly fees.

Business owners paying for solutions they are not taking advantage of or don’t need should consider switching to slim-down processing solutions that don’t charge you for all the extra features.

As we enter unknown economic waters, looking for ways to lower expenses and keep more revenue is vital. Start by making a list of the functionality your business needs to prosper. Talk to your existing processing company to understand what your merchant fees are paying for. If you think you’re overpaying fees, look for alternative solutions.

I’ve yet to have a credit card processing company inform me they were lowering my rates. The only way I have ever received better rates is by switching providers. Only you know if it’s the right time to switch.

Women You Should Know

Jill Johnston

Jill Johnston, a multimedia artist and art teacher from Cando, ND, has carved a unique path in the art world, blending creative exploration with community engagement. She cultivated her artistic passion through summer art camps and school projects. Her early love for photography evolved into a deep connection with ceramics during college, drawn by its grounding, tactile nature. "Art has always been a way for me to process, reflect, and connect. It’s a powerful tool for communication without the barriers of language,” she said.

Crafting Connection: Jill Johnston’s Journey as an Artist and Educator

Her artistic journey began on a farm, where the solitude of being an only child nurtured her creative exploration. Supported by her parents, she immersed herself in art through other mediums. "Growing up without an arts program in school taught me to make my own opportunities and to see art in everything from Homecoming posters to 4-H photography projects,” Jill said.

Despite growing up in a small town without a formal arts program, Jill’s passion flourished. Her introduction to ceramics in college was transformative, shifting her focus from photography to the tactile, grounding process of working with clay. This foundation shaped her evolution into a multimedia artist committed to creative expression and community engagement.

Jill’s work is a fusion of techniques, including ceramics, photography, fiber art, and printmaking.

Influenced by feminist art pioneers like Hannah Wilke and Anna Mendietta, Jill values the raw honesty and confrontational nature of art while incorporating playfulness into her work, often reminding herself that “it’s just mud.” She embraces imperfection, recognizing mistakes are crucial to growth.

When starting a project, Jill approaches her work in two distinct ways: a thoughtful, written process where she envisions the outcome and outlines the steps to achieve it and an unplanned, intuitive exploration where the piece takes shape organically.

Her themes often delve into mental health, body image, and nostalgia, creating pieces that are deeply personal yet universally resonant. Jill also enjoys experimenting with multimedia techniques, such as incorporating illustration, photography, and fiber art into her ceramics. This boundarypushing approach keeps her work ever-evolving, a

reflection of her belief in art as a means of communication that transcends barriers.

Jill’s role as a teaching artist at Plains Art Museum has been transformative for both her and the community she serves. She believes in the power of community arts education.

“Art doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be yours,” she said. Her efforts help break down barriers, fostering creativity and

confidence in individuals who might otherwise feel excluded from artistic spaces.

Currently, Jill balances her role as a teaching artist at the museum with her personal creative pursuits. She’s passionate about making art accessible, helping others overcome barriers, and discovering its transformative power. Her goal is to find harmony between her professional responsibilities and personal studio practice, aiming to expand her artistic repertoire

with large-scale sculptural projects. Ultimately, Jill dreams of showcasing her work on global stages like the Venice Biennale, where she was first inspired to pursue art on an international scale.

Jill’s journey exemplifies resilience, creativity, and a commitment to community, making her a standout figure in the art world and a source of inspiration for aspiring artists.

Starting a Small Business: A ‘How-To’ Guide

About the VBOC

The Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) program is designed to provide entrepreneurial development services such as business training, counseling, and resource partner referrals to transitioning service members, veterans, National Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses interested in starting or growing a small business. U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has 22 organizations participating in this cooperative agreement and serving as VBOCs.

Starting a small business can be an exciting and rewarding venture, but it also involves significant challenges and requires careful planning. Aspiring entrepreneurs often find themselves overwhelmed by the complexities of setting up a new business and may not know where to begin. This article offers a comprehensive guide on how to start a small business, covering everything from developing a business idea to managing day-to-day operations. With clear, practical steps, this guide will help new business owners understand the key components of entrepreneurship and the essentials for building a strong foundation for their businesses.

Every successful business begins with a compelling idea, but identifying the right business opportunity can be a daunting task. The first step is to conduct thorough market

research to ensure there is demand for your product or service. This involves identifying a gap in the market or solving a specific problem for potential customers. Effective market research helps you understand the competitive landscape, identify trends, and validate your business idea before committing significant time or money to it. Tools such as surveys, focus groups, or online research can provide valuable insights into customer needs, pricing expectations, and competition. It’s essential to ask yourself important questions during this stage, such as: What sets my business apart from competitors? How will my customers benefit from my product or service? Validating your business idea early on ensures that you're addressing a real need and sets you up for success in the long run.

Once your idea is validated, the next step is to create a business plan. A business plan serves as a roadmap for your business, outlining your objectives, strategies, and the steps you’ll take to achieve them. A comprehensive business plan typically includes an executive summary, business description, market research, organizational structure, marketing and sales strategies, and financial projections. A well-written business plan is not only crucial for guiding your own efforts but is also essential if you plan to seek external funding from investors, lenders, or banks.

Before launching your business, it’s important to consider the legal structure of your company. Choosing the right business entity has significant implications for your taxes, liability, and overall operations. Common options include

lson, Veterans Busines

sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited liability companies (LLCs), and corporations. Additionally, you must register your business with the state by filing the necessary documents with your state’s Secretary of State. This often involves submitting formation paperwork, such as Articles of Incorporation (for corporations) or Articles of Organization (for LLCs), and paying a registration fee. Your state’s Secretary of State website will provide the forms and simple to follow instructions to help you get started.

In addition to registering your business, you’ll need an Employer Identification Number (EIN), which is essentially a Social Security number for your business. This number is required for tax purposes, hiring employees, and opening a business bank account. You can obtain an EIN from the IRS by applying online, and it’s free. Whether you’re starting as a sole proprietor or forming a corporation, an EIN is an essential step in ensuring your business is legally recognized.

Securing adequate funding is often one of the most significant hurdles for new small business owners. Depending on your business, you may need funds to cover initial costs such as inventory, equipment, marketing, or renting space. Many entrepreneurs start by using their personal savings, but other financing options include loans, lines of credit, and investments. Traditional bank loans or Small Business Administration (SBA) loans offer structured repayment

plans but can be difficult to obtain without a solid business plan and credit history. Investors may also be an option if you're willing to give up equity in your business in exchange for capital. Crowdfunding, through platforms like Kickstarter or Indiegogo, has become another popular way for entrepreneurs to raise money by pitching their ideas to the general public.

With financing in place, you can begin setting up the operational aspects of your business. This includes finding a location, purchasing equipment, and, if necessary, hiring staff. The location of your business is an essential consideration, particularly if you are operating a physical storefront. For online businesses, selecting a domain name, hosting service, and designing a website are key tasks to ensure you have an online presence. Additionally, depending on the nature of your business, you may need to purchase equipment or technology to support your operations. Whether it’s office furniture, machinery, or software, investing in the right tools is crucial for running an efficient and successful business.

As your business takes shape, you’ll need to focus on marketing to attract and retain customers. A strong marketing strategy is essential for building brand awareness, generating leads, and driving sales. One of the first steps in marketing is creating a brand identity that resonates with your target audience. Digital marketing is especially important in today’s world. This includes building an optimized website, establishing a

presence on social media, and using search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to improve your search engine rankings. Email marketing is another effective tool for staying in touch with your customers and encouraging repeat business.

Traditional marketing methods, such as print advertisements, business cards, or event sponsorships, may also be useful depending on your market and business type.

Effective financial management is crucial for sustaining a business over time. Keeping accurate and organized financial records will help you track income and expenses, monitor cash flow, and make informed decisions about growth and expenses. Many small businesses use accounting software like QuickBooks or Xero to handle bookkeeping tasks. A separate business bank account is also important to keep personal and business finances distinct. As a small business owner, you will need to pay various taxes, including income tax, payroll tax (if you have employees), and possibly sales tax depending on your location and the nature of your products or services. Understanding your tax obligations and consulting with a tax professional can help prevent costly mistakes and ensure that you stay compliant with federal, state, and local tax laws.

Once your business is up and running, the next phase is growth. Scaling involves expanding your operations, increasing your product or service offerings, or entering new markets. The key to successful growth is maintaining quality while ensuring that you

can meet customer expectations as your business scales. Regularly soliciting customer feedback and continuously improving your processes will help maintain customer loyalty and satisfaction as your business grows.

Starting a small business requires a combination of creativity, hard work, and strategic planning. From validating your idea through market research to choosing the right legal structure, filing your business with the Secretary of State, obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN), and securing funding, the path to success is complex but manageable when broken down into clear steps. By developing a solid business plan, focusing on effective marketing strategies, and maintaining good financial practices, you can lay the groundwork for a thriving business. With determination and persistence, you can turn your business idea into a successful venture.
