This month, we're exploring the city of West Fargo—from restaurants and bars to city parks and local markets. We're meeting a handful of people who are active in making sure that the community is a welcoming, innovative, and thriving one.
I moved to Moorhead in 2017 to live in a dorm, and then moved into a house by campus, and then another house in town. Then in 2020, I moved across the river to
an apartment in Fargo, and finally into a larger apartment in 2023. I've been here ever since. Through these past eight years and five moves, even though I haven't physically lived within its borders, I have also been able to call West Fargo home. In the mid-2000s, my sister (who is 12 years older than me) moved to Fargo to attend school. Years later, she’s married with two beautiful children, a very expressive Wheaten Terrier, and a cozy house in West Fargo. Again,
I never technically lived within the city limits of West Fargo, but my sister, brother-in-law, niece, and nephew might argue that it sure has felt like it (maybe for the better and worse at times). From the minute I moved to the big city of Fargo from western North Dakota, I always had a place in their home. From being an honorary West Fargo Packer fan and being introduced to the local staples like Deaner's Diner to attending many soccer games at the West Fargo
Soccer Complex and being inducted into the Costco fan club—which isn't only a West Fargo-thing, but I'd be lying if I didn't credit it to being a big part of my time in West Fargo (especially the vanilla ice cream sundae topped with strawberries). I almost feel like I can call myself a West Fargoan... but don't worry, unless my address is of the 58078, I won't.
No matter where I was living, what I was doing, I always knew I could venture west, visit my sister's, and have a place to be. As much as this is my sister and family's doing, it reflects the community they're in as
well. I have always been fascinated by the pure neighborhood-ness that the entire city has. The people, families, and the spaces are so welcoming. I love the entirety of FargoMoorhead-West Fargo, but the city on the grow will have a special place in my heart because of the people in it.
I hope you enjoy our guide to West Fargo, and of course,
Happy Reading! Geneva Nodland Editor

Redefining
Through Personalized, Root-Cause Solutions Healthcare
By Brady Drake
The traditional healthcare system, with its emphasis on symptom management and standardized treatments, often leaves patients feeling dismissed and unheard.
Everest Regenerative Medicine takes a different approach—one that prioritizes individualized care built on listening, functional medicine, and cutting-edge regenerative treatments to help patients optimize their health.
The Challenge with Traditional Healthcare
Having spent 25 years in conventional medicine, Provider and CMO Dr. Arden Beachy at Everest Regenerative Medicine understands its shortcomings. Too often, patients are reduced to numbers, and quickly pushed through the system with little time for meaningful conversations about their health. Many leave their doctor’s office with prescriptions and test results labeled as "normal," yet still feel exhausted, unmotivated, or in pain. And most frustrating, without THEIR primary concerns addressed due to the rigidity of the healthcare system and insurance model.
Functional and regenerative medicine offer a better way. By taking a deep dive into comprehensive lab work,
lifestyle factors, and holistic treatment options, Everest helps patients uncover the root causes of their symptoms and create personalized strategies to restore balance in their health.
The Everest Approach
The philosophy at Everest is to listen to patients, understand their concerns and develop solutions for their unique needs and goals.
"In PA school and even our rotations, we are taught that if a patient comes in, they get to discuss one complaint and that is it," Provider Crystal Amundson said. "You cut them off after that one issue, and if they have anything else, they have to schedule another appointment. However, the reality is, many patients wait until they are feeling really bad before they make an appointment. So by the time they come in, they have two or three concerns. If we cut them off after just one, what happens to the other issues they’re dealing with?"
Rather than limiting visits to a single complaint, Everest practitioners take the time to understand the full scope of a patient's wellness goals, including mental, physical, and aesthetic concerns.
The team looks at factors like gut health, hormone balance, emotional well-being, and overall metabolic
function. Patients are empowered with knowledge and options to make sure they feel in control of their own health journey.
But they don't stop there. Because of Beachy and Amundson's experiences in traditional medicine, Everest Regenerative Medicine has the ability to bridge the gap between different areas of medicine. Many healthcare providers specialize in only one area— whether it be aesthetics, functional medicine, or primary care. Everest integrates all these disciplines under one roof to give patients access to a broad spectrum of services tailored to their goals.
In doing this, Everest strives hard to meet patients where they are at along their journey. Some individuals come in knowing they want to optimize their health, while others simply feel like something is "off" but aren’t sure what’s causing it. The team works with them whatever the case is with a major focus on education. Patients are not just given treatments—they are informed about their health and the science behind their options.
The Shift Toward Preventative and Regenerative Healthcare
As more people seek alternatives to conventional medicine, functional and regenerative approaches are gaining
Photos provided by Everest Regenerative Medicine
momentum. Everest Regenerative Medicine is at the forefront of this shift and is helping individuals take control of their health before they reach a crisis point.
Rather than waiting until chronic issues require medication or invasive procedures, Everest encourages patients to take proactive steps toward wellness, especially the younger population. The philosophy at Everest is that health is a journey, not a one-time fix. Just like with fitness or nutrition, lasting change comes from consistency and a willingness to adapt. The clinic’s goal is to help patients build momentum—starting with small wins and progressing toward true health optimization.
Everest Regenerative Medicine is a new way forward in medicine, are you ready to join their journey?

PRECISION LAWN & LANDSCAPE DOES ALL THAT!?
our yard is the first thing guests and neighbors notice about your home—make sure it leaves a lasting impression. Precision Lawn & Landscape makes sure every detail is perfect. Whether you need a lush, healthy lawn or a beautifully designed outdoor space, Precision Lawn & Landscape can get it done with a comprehensive range of services, expert craftsmanship, and a commitment to quality.
ABOUT PRECISION LAWN & LANDSCAPE
Precision covers every conceivable aspect of outdoor living spaces. From meticulous lawn care services such as
mowing, fertilizing and weed control, edging, and aerating, to expansive landscaping projects including rock and fabric installation, plants, trees, and breathtaking water and fire features— Precision truly does it all. But the company's expertise doesn't end there.
Clients are often pleasantly surprised to discover that Precision also excels in fencing, decking, mosquito spraying, and even snow removal—they have an extraordinary capacity to address virtually any outdoor need.
Of course Precision has a beautiful outdoor space at their office!
THE SERVICES
AERATION
Precision Lawn & Landscape offers professional aeration services designed to rejuvenate and strengthen your lawn. Aeration involves perforating the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeply. This facilitates healthy and robust root growth. Over time, lawns naturally become compacted, restricting essential elements from reaching the roots, which can leave your lawn stressed and vulnerable. Precision’s aeration process mitigates this issue, ensuring your lawn thrives, becomes more resistant to drought, and consistently looks vibrant and lush.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Once per year or at least once every other year. For those seeking optimal lawn health and enhanced appearance, aerating twice annually provides even greater benefits.
BOULEVARD CLEANING
Precision Lawn & Landscape offers comprehensive boulevard cleaning services, which is essential for maintaining a healthy lawn after winter. Throughout the colder months, snowplows and sanding operations can deposit significant amounts of sand and debris onto boulevards. Left untreated, this material can mat down and suffocate grass, hindering growth and appearance. Precision efficiently removes this buildup, ensuring grass emerges healthy, lush, and vibrant each spring.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Annually in early spring, immediately following the winter season, to ensure optimal lawn health.
MOSQUITO & SPIDER CONTROL
Beyond standard lawn care, Precision offers effective mosquito control treatments to ensure clients can fully enjoy their outdoor spaces without pests. As part of this service, Precision provides specialized pest control spraying around home foundations, soffits, and fascia to prevent spiders and other unwanted insects from congregating near structures.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Mosquito spraying is typically recommended every 3-4 weeks during peak mosquito season, usually from late spring through early fall.
DETHATCHING
Precision Lawn & Landscape provides gentle yet effective dethatching services, ideal for thinner lawns that need careful handling. Using a tine-based system, dethatching gently lifts away dead grass and thatch without damaging healthy grass. This exposes topsoil for improved seed-to-soil contact during overseeding. This process also enhances soil warmth and sunlight exposure to promote healthier grass growth.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends dethatching annually in the spring to maintain optimal lawn health and facilitate strong growth.
POWER RAKING
One of the most effective ways to maintain a vibrant, healthy lawn is through power raking. Over time, thatch—a layer of dead
ABOUT OWNER SKYLER AKASON
What started as a teenager's attempt to save money for his first car has evolved into one of the region's most trusted names in lawn care and landscaping services.
In 1997, at just 16 years old, Founder Skyler Akason pushed a mower around his neighborhood, determined to achieve perfection with every lawn—no, really, his brother got frustrated working with him because he 'took too much time trying to be perfect.' Over the years, that youthful determination transformed into Precision Lawn & Landscape, a company that now commands respect across the community for its attention to detail, exceptional quality, and extensive range of services.
Skyler has personally instilled standards that are upheld today by Brady Rinke, his COO, who has his pulse on all aspects of the company. Brady works closely with all employees to ensure each customer's needs are met with the highest quality of service.
"Also, none of this would be possible without my wife and company CFO, Jen," Skyler said. "She spearheads coordination, scheduling, and all financial transactions.”
PARTNER CONTENT
grass, roots, and debris—can build up, preventing water, nutrients, and air from reaching the soil. Precision's power raking service removes this buildup to promote better root growth and improve the overall health of your lawn.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends power raking annually in the spring to maintain optimal lawn health and facilitate strong growth.
EDGING
Precision Lawn & Landscape provides detailed edging services to create clean, sharp borders along driveways, sidewalks, and pavement. Using specialized equipment, a metal blade precisely cuts away overgrown grass, forming distinct boundaries that enhance curb appeal and maintain an immaculate lawn appearance.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends scheduling edging two to three times during the summer to keep your lawn looking tidy and well-maintained.
MOWING & TRIMMING
Precision Lawn & Landscape uses topof-the-line equipment that delivers distinctive, attractive striping patterns. This specialized approach leaves lawns looking clean, manicured, and
professionally maintained—similar to the appearance of a baseball diamond. To maintain optimal lawn health, Precision regularly alternates mowing directions among four different patterns which reduces turf wear and promotes uniform growth.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends regular weekly mowing during peak growing season to keep lawns looking pristine and healthy.
FERTILIZER & WEED CONTROL
Precision Lawn & Landscape provides comprehensive fertilizer and weed control services tailored to ensure your lawn remains lush, healthy, and weed-free. Precision also enhances its fertilization program with iron supplements to guarantee a rich, vibrant green color—unmatched by standard lawn treatments. The company also offers targeted specialty applications for those hard-to-control weeds like barnyard and crabgrass.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends three to four fertilizer and weed control applications per season. Customers without regular watering schedules should opt for three treatments—spring, early summer, and late summer—while customers with consistent irrigation should pursue four applications for best results.
OVERSEEDING
Precision Lawn & Landscape provides professional overseeding services, strategically spreading grass seed throughout your yard to promote lush, full growth, particularly in areas that have become thin or patchy. Overseeding enhances the density and vitality of your lawn, resulting in improved resilience against weeds and disease, and contributes significantly to overall lawn health and appearance.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends overseeding annually or whenever your lawn begins to appear sparse, ideally in spring or early fall, to maximize grass growth and effectiveness. For optimal results, overseeding should be coupled with aerating to maximize the seed-to-soil contact by creating little voids for the seed to fall into.
SPRINKLER INSTALLATION, STARTUP, & WINTERIZATION
Precision installs sprinkler systems customized to each property's specific needs, considering factors like sprinkler head types and optimal zone run times. These systems include Wi-Fi connectivity and smart rain sensors to monitor moisture levels to automatically adjust watering schedules based on real-time conditions to prevent water waste. Precision also provides efficient sprinkler startup and winterization services to protect your irrigation system and ensure optimal performance throughout the year. The startup process involves safely reactivating the water supply, thoroughly inspecting and adjusting each sprinkler zone, and setting accurate timers to maintain proper watering schedules. For winterization, the system is carefully drained and prepared to prevent damage from freezing temperatures.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends regular seasonal maintenance, including system checks, adjustments, and winterization, to ensure consistent sprinkler performance and lawn health throughout the year.
LEAF CLEANUP
Precision Lawn & Landscape offers thorough leaf cleanup services, employing a detailed and systematic
approach to ensure your yard remains pristine throughout the seasons. Their team meticulously uses backpack blowers to clear leaves and debris from landscape beds, window wells, and other challenging areas—no corner is overlooked. Leaves are then collected, bagged, and hauled away, including a thorough cleanup of spots inaccessible by mowers. This approach significantly surpasses basic leaf removal methods, ensuring your yard stays clean and visually appealing.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends leaf cleanup early spring and late fall to maintain lawn health and appearance.
GUTTER CLEANING
Precision Lawn & Landscape isn't afraid to provide thorough gutter cleaning services. This is important to do regularly because it safeguards your home from potential water damage. Leaves and debris accumulated in gutters can obstruct proper drainage, potentially causing water backup and risking damage or basement flooding.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends gutter cleaning at least once or twice a year, ideally in early spring and late fall to maintain optimal drainage and home protection.
PERENNIAL CLEANUP & SHRUB TRIMMING
For perennials, Precision expertly trims plants down to a few inches above the ground, promoting fresh, vibrant regrowth each spring. This cleanup typically occurs in spring, although fall cleanup is also an option. Shrubs are carefully trimmed and shaped to maintain neatness, enhance their aesthetic appeal, and control growth effectively.
SERVICE RECOMMENDATION
Precision recommends shrub trimming one to three times throughout the summer based on customer preferences, and perennial cleanup once annually, typically in spring or fall.
ROCK & DECORATIVE BOULDERS
Landscape rock installations come in various sizes and colors to complement your home’s style and personal preferences.
EDGING & CONCRETE CURBING
For edging solutions, Precision offers two distinct options:
Concrete Curbing:
This involves poured concrete borders that provide a defined, durable edge around landscape rock or garden areas. Many customers prefer the clean, solid look of concrete curbing, though it’s important to note that small cracks may occur over time due to natural ground shifts.
Interlocking Bullet Edging:
This alternative consists of individual concrete pieces, each approximately one foot long, designed to interlock and create a seamless appearance. Bullet edging has the advantage of flexibility, which allows for slight movement during seasonal freezing and thawing cycles, which minimizes cracking.
Correct installation is critical for bullet edging, as improper installation can lead to shifting. However, when installed professionally by Precision, bullet edging provides lasting durability and easy maintenance.
PATIOS
Precision Lawn & Landscape expertly installs beautiful and durable patios, offering both manufactured paver options and natural stone varieties such as bluestone and travertine. Additionally, Precision specializes in creating customized outdoor kitchen spaces, complete with features such as built-in storage, refrigerators, and a range of countertop materials including limestone, granite, and concrete.
WOOD & MAINTENANCE FREE DECKING AND FENCING
Precision Lawn & Landscape installs both traditional wood and maintenance-free decking and fencing options. For customers seeking
convenience and minimal upkeep, Precision offers durable composite decking, aluminum, and vinyl fencing— materials that eliminate the need for regular staining or painting. Those preferring a classic look have the choice of natural wood decking and fencing.
PERGOLAS
Clients frequently present ideas, and Precision’s dedicated division manager works closely with them to bring their perfect pergola to life. Each pergola is crafted from either maintenancefree materials like composite, vinyl, aluminum, or traditional wood.
PERENNIAL, SHRUB, & TREE PLANTING
Precision Lawn & Landscape offers hundreds of carefully selected plant options that thrive in the local climate. Their experienced designers expertly choose plants tailored specifically for environmental compatibility, considering sunlight requirements and seasonal growth patterns.
RETAINING WALLS
Precision Lawn & Landscape designs and installs durable and visually appealing retaining walls, offering options including manufactured blocks and natural stone, with each providing reliable support while enhancing the beauty and functionality of your outdoor spaces.
SOD AND HYDROSEED
Precision Lawn & Landscape offers superior sod and hydroseed services. Precision uses only premium sod sourced from trusted suppliers. Their hydroseeding technique efficiently provides even coverage and rapid growth, ideal for establishing new lawns or enhancing existing turf.
Precision stands firmly behind its sod and hydroseed work, offering a reliable warranty to customers who follow the provided care instructions.
Precision also does final grade work to ensure your yard is smooth and properly slopped before they install sod or hydroseed.
FIRE PITS, WATER FEATURES, LANDSCAPE LIGHTING, & OUTDOOR KITCHENS
Precision Lawn & Landscape specializes in creating fully customized fire features and water features, carefully designed and built from scratch to align seamlessly with your home's existing style. Fire features can be crafted using natural gas, propane, or traditional wood-burning setups. Water features, often constructed from natural stone, are thoughtfully integrated into the landscape so that they look naturally placed. Precision’s capabilities extend to water features, fountains, spillways, and other distinctive designs.

YOUR GUIDE TO
Last year, we had the opportunity to publish an entire magazine dedicated to a city on the grow—the city of West Fargo. This year, we get to bring you an updated version of this guide as part of the launch of Meet Fargo, showcasing all that its sister city, West Fargo, has to offer! Last year, we showed you 80-some amazing things to see, do, shop, and more in West Fargo, and this year we're back with even more (103 things to be exact)! We're kicking off this issue with a message from West Fargo Mayor Bernie Dardis, then, we'll hear from a handful of individuals who work to make it a great place to live and play, including city, community, and park district professionals; business owners of West Fargo hot spots; and we even have an extra special interview with West Fargo native Tyler Roehl—the recently named tight ends coach for the NFL's Detroit Lions!
So, let's jump in and meet West Fargo!
"The city has changed dramatically over time. I used to come to West Fargo when I was a student at NDSU on an academic and football scholarship," said West Fargo Mayor Bernie Dardis. "My college roommate was from West Fargo and he lived on Oak Street and I was from Killdeer, ND so I didn't have time to go home on weekends—instead, I would go to the Johnson residence for Sunday dinners. They were great West Fargoans and wonderful people. Being where I was from, I wanted that small-town atmosphere and small-town social engagement. My wife Louise and I found that in West Fargo and we've never left. I told the Johnsons during one of those Sunday dinners that when I came back to West Fargo because I was going to leave for a year or two, I was going to buy a house on Oak Street. The first house I bought in West Fargo was four doors down from the Johnsons. I love this city and I've been here ever since."
WEST FARGO IS BOOMING
Mayor Dardis is certainly right, West Fargo has grown tremendously since he planted down roots 48 years ago. In fact, you don't even have to go back that far to see the boom. Between 1990 and 2000, the city grew from a population of 12,287 to 14,940. By 2010, the population bloomed to 25,830 and now, as of 2023, West Fargo stands with a total of 41,595 citizens.
From an interview conducted by staff with Mayor Dardis in Spring 2024
City of West Fargo
WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT WEST FARGO
Small Town Feel - "West Fargo still has a great sense of small community—we hear that every single day."
Great Community Events - "The programming and content we do with West Fargo events in our public spaces like The Lights and the POW/MIA Plaza, our fallen celebration, West Fest, our parades, to my understanding is second to only one other community in the state of North Dakota in terms of size and attendance—that's great. Our programming also is very family-oriented.
Neighborhood Schools - "West Fargo Public Schools, which extends its boundaries into both Horace and Fargo, is committed to neighborhood schools, which in some people's minds might be expensive because want to keep elementary schools limited to about 600 kids. In these schools, when kids get into fourth or fifth grade, they can bike to school and that sort of thing. We have the same thing with the middle schools. They have a formula worked out there where they want to keep it to about 1,200 to 1,400 at the middle schools and 1,500 to 1,600 at the high schools. The opportunities we provide kids in band and choir, theater and sports, and the commitment from the groups of people leading those efforts is terrific."
Trees - No, really, trees. West Fargo has been a major champion of trees. West Fargo has been a Tree City USA since 1984. Currently, the city has eight community orchards with fruits such as apples, pears, plums, cherries, apricots, honeyberries, ground cherries, red lake currents, and even hazelnuts growing. The goal, according to the city, is to eventually have an arbor in every neighborhood. Because of the city's commitment to urban forestry, it is approaching its 10th consecutive year of receiving the Growth Award from the Arbor Day Foundation.
What's more, the city has a tree deposit program for newly constructed homes located in West Fargo City Limits. This program is designed to reimburse residents for planting trees. For instructions and more information, go to westfargond.gov.]
THE FUTURE
"Our future will be extremely bright with the new flood protection that the Metro Flood Diversion Authority is building at the present time. That will give us an extra about 9,000 acres in our extraterritorial area that'll have flood protection. This gives us the opportunity to grow, but it might not be immediate because a lot of that land is being farmed right now. If they want to continue farming it, that's great. I'm of the position that we won't do forced annexations. If they do want to annex, we'll listen, but there is a cost that comes with that development. So this isn't a thing that's going to happen overnight. We are also decommissioning our lagoons, which opens up another 600 acres in the Northwest corner of West Fargo and about 60 acres are currently being developed for light commercial in the old stockyards."

TYLER ROEHL’S JOURNEY OF GRIT AND GROWTH
Growing up in West Fargo, Tyler Roehl learned the value of hard work early— whether it was delivering newspapers in the dead of winter or pushing himself on the football field at West Fargo High. His journey from a determined kid with big dreams to a Division I athlete and now a coach in the NFL shows his work ethic.Roehl has been guided by influential mentors, from high school coaches and teachers to college leaders at NDSU, to build a career rooted in discipline, character, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Now, as the tight ends coach for the Detroit Lions, Roehl is carrying those same lessons forward, determined to make an impact at the highest level of the game. Thinking back on his own short-lived professional playing career, which ended with a torn ACL in offseason training with the Seattle Seahawks in 2009, he said, “I’m hungry, ready, and willing to do whatever it takes to go and win a Super Bowl. And if I wasn't able to do it as a player, but you know what, I'm finding a lot of joy in the coaching piece, and would probably find as much satisfaction reaching the highest of highs as a coach. How it ended as a player— it's fueling me."
With that fuel-power, Tyler Roehl is taking on the season ready to connect with the players and aim for the big win. We had the chance to chat with him about his new role and his journey in getting there.
HOMETOWN CRAVINGS: SANDY’S DONUTS &JL BEERS
MIDWEST ROOTS & WORK ETHIC
No matter where life takes him, Tyler always makes time for his favorite West Fargo eats. At the top of his list? Sandy’s Donuts. “That’s not even a question,” he said. “They actually shipped donuts to me in Iowa… now I need to get a hold of them and have them ship some to Detroit.” His go-to order: a chocolate Long John with Bavarian cream—or a maple bacon donut. When it comes to burgers, JL Beers is the spot, with the Humpty Dumpty as his top pick. “If I’m feeling a little bit sporty, I put on peanut
For Tyler, growing up in West Fargo meant developing grit, discipline, and a relentless work ethic— lessons he carries with him today. “If you want to develop toughness, deliver the Fargo Forum in December, January, February, March, during a blizzard at 5:30 in the morning,” he said. From youth sports to high school football, he learned that success comes from hard work and holding himself to a championship standard. “No one thought I was going to play Division I football,” he said. “But if you want something, go work for it.” That mentality, shaped in his hometown, helped pave his way
ADVICE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
Behind every great athlete is a strong support system, and for Tyler, West Fargo provided just that. He credits longtime football coach Jay Gibson as a gamechanger. “He was ahead of the ball game… unbelievable football IQ,” Tyler said. Teachers like Mr. Willis from his middle school days and West Fargo High's Mr. Preston, whom Tyler stays in touch with today, also played key roles. “Mr. Preston put me in the front row, forced me out of my shell,” he said. “We talked more about life than anything.” Whether on the field or in the classroom, these mentors helped shape his mindset: work hard, stay humble, and always strive to be better.
when his playing career did with a torn ACL during offseason training with the Seattle Seahawks instead, it evolved. Now the tight ends coach for the Detroit Lions, he’s fully embracing the grind. “Change can be hard, but when you change with the right people for the right reasons, it can be exponential in your growth,” he said. Learning under top coaches like Matt Campbell at Iowa State, he’s committed to leading with high standards. “My goal is to be the best tight ends coach in the National Football League and have the best position group in the league,” he said. “And we’re not going to get there by just sitting around.”
Tyler’s journey proves that success isn’t about where you start—it’s about the mindset you bring. “It doesn’t matter where you’re from,” he said. “If you embody work ethic, low ego, curiosity… anything is possible.” He believes in surrounding yourself with the right people and embracing challenges. “Don’t let where you’re from limit you. Find the positives, put in the work, and hold yourself to a high standard. At the end of the day, the work works,” he said. “And I wouldn’t be where I am without West Fargo.”

STRENGTHENING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IN WEST FARGO
Lana Rakow has spent her career fostering community, democracy, and communication. Originally from Buffalo, ND, she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of North Dakota before pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. Her career took her across the midwest—from PR work in Minneapolis and Wisconsin to faculty and leadership roles at universities in Indiana, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. She eventually returned to UND, where she led the Center for Community Engagement until her retirement.
After moving to West Fargo in 2018, Lana quickly recognized a gap in civic infrastructure—how people connect, engage, and build a sense of community. This led her to co-found Civic West, an initiative aimed at increasing civic engagement, community conversations, and local journalism. As chair of the steering committee, she informs residents, promotes inclusivity in decision-making, and fosters stronger community ties. Passionate about sustainable, people-driven initiatives, Lana is dedicated to ensuring that West Fargo’s rapid growth is matched by an equally strong sense of civic participation and connection. Through Civic West’s five key initiatives, Lana and the team are helping create spaces for dialogue, connection, and creative expression. Let's learn about each!
CIVIC JOURNALISM
West Fargo residents needed a space to talk about the issues that matter to them— so Fire Hall Chats were born. These gatherings bring people together in an open, welcoming environment to discuss local topics, share ideas, and strengthen community ties. “Where else do you talk about West Fargo?” Lana said. Held at the fire station, these events go beyond small talk. “What I love is that you have this topic and information presented, and then afterward, you see these little groups of people talking—and not just about the weather.” Fire Hall Chats are about meaningful conversations that continue long after the event, building a more connected, and engaged West Fargo.
With no WF-specific dedicated newspaper or local TV station, many West Fargo residents can struggle to stay informed. That’s where Civic West's Civic Journalism initiative comes in. Volunteers attend city meetings— such as the City Commission and Planning & Zoning—to report on decisions and discussions affecting the community. “We don’t have a media, so we don’t have reports,” Lana said. By covering these meetings and publishing updates online, Civic Journalism ensures that residents have access to local news that directly impacts them. “We’re building up a system to gather opinions and stories about West Fargo,” she said, turning civic engagement into a shared responsibility.
Civic West is working to make West Fargo more livable for residents of all ages. Inspired by the AARP’s nationwide livability movement, the Livable West Fargo initiative evaluates the city based on key factors like housing, transportation, and accessibility. “We have a livability score of 55, which is a little better than the overall average, but there’s still more to do,” Lana said. The biggest challenge? Engagement. “The irony is that our lowest score is engagement—and that’s exactly what we’re working on.” By addressing gaps and bringing people into the decision-making process, this initiative is helping shape a West Fargo that works for everyone.
WELCOME WEST FARGO
West Fargo has grown rapidly, and many new residents struggle to find ways to get involved. The Welcome West Fargo initiative aims to change that by helping newcomers feel at home. “We’re looking for businesses who want to donate items— whether it’s a giveaway, a pen with their name, or something in between—to help new residents feel connected,” Lana said. The program plans to distribute welcome bags through realtors and apartment managers, giving newcomers useful resources and a warm introduction to the city. “We want people to feel like they’re part of this community from the moment they arrive,” she said, making civic engagement accessible from day one.
West Fargo has plenty of talent, but local artists often struggle to find spaces to showcase their Arts Community initiative is changing that by creating opportunities for public art and performances throughout the city. “We have so many places where you could do an arts exhibit—even in gas stations,” Lana said. Whether it’s pop-up galleries, poetry installations in parks, or live music performances, the goal is to integrate the arts into everyday life. “Other communities have these spaces—why can’t West Fargo?” By highlighting creativity, Civic West is making the arts an essential part of the city’s identity.
Civic West is a movement to build a more engaged, connected, and informed West Fargo. Whether it’s attending a Fire Hall Chat, reading or contributing to Civic Journalism, supporting efforts to make a Livable West Fargo, donating to the basket for Welcome West Fargo, or fostering creativity in the Arts Community, there are countless ways to make a difference. Your voice, participation, and ideas matter. If you’re passionate about strengthening civic life, consider volunteering, attending an event, or supporting the cause. LEADING WEST FARGO’S PARKS & PROGRESS
Amy Zundel brings a unique blend of leadership, passion, and community involvement to her roles as both executive director of the West Fargo Park District and as well as a city commissioner. A West Fargo resident for over a decade, she stepped into the Park District role in December 2024, following a long career as a sports chiropractor and business owner. With experience in recreation, nonprofit work, and government affairs, Amy sees this position as the perfect intersection of her skills and interests—which includes creating and supporting an active community.
Originally from Bismarck, ND, Amy earned her undergraduate degree at NDSU before completing graduate studies in St. Louis. She and her husband, Keenan, a patrol sergeant for the Cass County Sheriff's Office, are raising their two boys, Avery and Brooks, in a community they deeply love. Whether overseeing the city’s 30-plus playgrounds, engaging with residents at park events, or shaping long-term growth strategies, Amy is dedicated to making West Fargo an active, thriving place for families. With her commitment to collaboration and efficiency, she’s focused on ensuring that both the Park District and city development align to best serve the community.
ARMOUR PARK: A PEACEFUL ESCAPE WITH A SWEET TREAT
Looking for the perfect place to enjoy a Sandy’s Donut? Armour Park is the spot. “It is isolated from major roads, has full-grown trees, everything nature has to offer, and is one of West Fargo’s oldest parks,” Amy said. With its lush greenery and mature trees, it’s an ideal setting to unwind, picnic, or, simply soak in the outdoors. Whether you’re stopping by for a break or bringing the kids to run around, Armour Park is a classic West Fargo destination.

RUSTAD RECREATION CENTER: THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
Rustad Recreation Center is truly a community hub. “In my opinion, a measurable pulse of our community,” Amy said. The center offers an indoor, year-round playground, a 35x70 turf field, a free walking track, and even free coffee in the mornings. One of its standout programs is the SAIL (Staying Active and Independent for Life) class. “One of the coolest things about the facility is the SAIL class we offer on MWF on the turf for free. You can show up and see about 100 seniors enjoying community and recreation together.”

RENDEZVOUS PARK: A RECREATIONAL WONDERLAND
With endless activities to enjoy, Rendezvous Park is a true West Fargo treasure. “Home to two playgrounds nestled in one park! It was just renovated in 2024 and includes 8 outdoor pickleball courts, a skate park, 6 baseball diamonds, a soccer and flag football area, a skating rink and warming house, 3 first-come, first-serve open shelters to the public, and overlooks a beautiful pond, and an 18-hole disc golf course. Al said. A unique perk? “There are also over 2.5 miles of walking trails here.”

FARGO’S ORCHARDS: FREE FRUIT & NATURE’S BEAUTY
West Fargo is home to an unexpected natural delight—community orchards! “The city of West Fargo has 10 orchards (adding another one this summer),” Amy said. “One is currently on park property in collaboration with the city (Charleswood Walking Path between 7th Street E and 8th Street E, South of 15th Ave E) and features apples, pears, plums, and cherries. The new one they are adding will also be on park property.”

ELMWOOD PARK: BASEBALL, NATURE & RIVER VIEWS
“My favorite park is Elmwood. My kiddos play baseball, and I love spending summer evenings there,” she said. The park’s location along the river makes it a scenic spot where visitors often fish. “There are mature beautiful trees of all different varieties flourishing. There is also 2.25 miles of walking trails.” Home to West Fargo Baseball, Elmwood is well-known for Young Field, featuring a turf infield and grass outfield with an ivy fence in left field.

WHERE COMFORT FOOD MEETS COMMUNITY
Newly opened last fall, The Sandbox Restaurant & Bar is a welcoming space built on connection, comfort, and creativity. Opened by Jordan Crouse, a local mom of four, The Sandbox was inspired by the idea of creating a place where everyone—families, friends, professionals, and neighbors—can come together. With cozy indoor vibes, two unique patio areas, and event spaces, the restaurant is designed for gathering and good times.
The menu blends Midwest comfort food classics with fun, house-created items, as well as half-price late-night appetizers and kidfriendly Tuesdays. The Sandbox often partners with nonprofits. They host trivia and bingo, and more—it’s a space where something is always happening. Whether you're stopping by for a pint, bringing the kids for dinner, or hosting a private event, The Sandbox delivers on its mission: to be a place where everyone can play, gather, and feel at home. Check out these top five things to love about the Sandbox!
A MENU FULL OF MIDWEST COMFORT (AND CREATIVITY)
The Sandbox puts its own twist on classic comfort food with a menu designed to satisfy and surprise. “Our top two menu items are the Lutheran Sushi Dip and our French Dip,” Jordan said. Other local favorites include the tater-tot hot dish and a unique slider flight trio. The kitchen team focuses on balance—with the nostalgic Midwestern staples people love while introducing creative new dishes. From hearty pastas to a freshly launched spinach artichoke dip, everything is crafted to feel familiar yet exciting. It’s comfort food with personality—perfect for a casual dinner, a family meal, or late-night bites with friends.
TWO EVENT SPACES, ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES
With two thoughtfully designed event spaces—The Treehouse upstairs and The Garden downstairs—The Sandbox is ready to host everything from birthdays to nonprofit fundraisers. “We call the downstairs space The Underground Garden. It’s got that speakeasy vibe,” Jordan said. Each area offers private bars, TVs, dart boards, and patio access, with flexible layouts and cozy atmospheres. Whether you’re planning a casual gathering or a themed event, these versatile spaces offer something for everyon As Jordan puts it, “The events are so much fun… 50 people that never would have maybe came now get welcomed into this space.”
DINE TO DONATE: EATING WITH PURPOSE
Supporting local nonprofits has been a large focus of The Sandbox’s mission. Through its Dine to Donate program, the restaurant partners with local nonprofit organizations, some past being HERO, Styled with Strength, Full Circle Academy, and For Love of Dog Rescue. “On that day, everyone knows that they can come in and 10% of any food that they have goes right back to that nonprofit.” It’s a simple, effective way to give back—building community connections over shared meals, while helping those who need it most.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY VIBES, INSIDE AND OUT
While The Sandbox may look like a modern bar from the outside, Jordan is working hard to ensure families know they’re always welcome. “We have it on the door that kids are welcome,” she says. “Tuesdays, we do kids eat free—two kids per one adult.” To keep little ones happy, the restaurant has board games, a treasure box of toys, and kid-friendly coloring menus. “As a mom of four, I get it—kids are busy at the table.” There’s even a giant Connect Four and possibly some patio chalk coming this summer. It’s all about creating a place where parents can relax too.
A NEIGHBORHOOD SPOT FOR EVERYONE
Whether you’re in work boots or business casual, The Sandbox is designed to feel like home. “It just feels like you can have the businessman come in and the working man come in, and you can all just exist in this neighborhood space,” Jordan said, recalling what a patron said once—and that’s exactly the vibe she envisioned. Trivia Mondays, Bingo Thursdays, Meat Raffles Fridays, live music, and late-night specials (like Bavarian pretzels and half-price apps from 8–10 p.m.) all help foster that inclusive atmosphere. “We're just trying to build community and a place for people to land,” Jordan said. Mission accomplished.

Randy's Diner Too
Skip the wait on University!
One of the best local puns, in our opinion, Randy's Diner Too in West Fargo is one of the top spots for breakfast, brunch, and morning coffee. The pun comes from the first Randy's Diner, located on University Drive in Fargo since 1980, and since this was the second diner location, and it was called Randy's Diner as well—the name, Randy's Diner Too was born! Everyone knows that on any given weekend morning, Randy's Diner on University has a line out the door, but did you know you can jump on 32nd and head to Randy's Diner Too and find a spot at their larger, new location? Bar Down
Inside The Lights development in 2020, Bar Down is a sports bar and restaurant for singles, couples, retirees, families, and everything in between! With the ice rink at the complex and the neighboring West Fargo Sports Arena, along with the natural local, love for the sport, it make sense to for the sports bar and grill to be where it is. Lundy's Ice Cream
The Lights just got a little sweeter with the addition of Lundy's Ice Cream Shop, featuring 32 seasonally rotating flavors, a cozy atmosphere, and the cutest mascot. Lundy's partners exclusively with Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream, a Madison, WI-based brand known since 1962 for its premium, high-butterfat ice cream. Cookie Krums in downtown West Fargo is a bakery with custom cookies, specializing in a variety of innovative and gourmet flavors, but they don't just do cookies. The storefront has fresh seasonal and classic cookies, along with ice cream for purchase inside during their retail hours—pro tip: ask for an ice cream sandwich, choose your fighters (your cookie and ice cream flavors), and thank me later. Not only do they offer delicious treats, but Cookie Krums is also a party spot, for rent of course! From children's birthdays to adult celebrations, owner Katie works with you to plan, lead, and fully execute your perfect, sweet cookie-central celebration. You can even purchase your party supplies right inside the bakery. You can also just purchase party supplies here without the party rental or bakery items... not likely on the cookie front though.

Freddy's Lefse and Nordic Kitchen
If you're from the area, you know Freddy's Lefse, and for good reason. The Nordic bakery specializes in hand-made, hand-rolled lefse—a traditional Norwegian and Midwestern delicacy. In operation since 1946, the business rolled out a new line of hand-mixed Scandinavian organic baking mixes in the past few years, including Norwegian pancakes, Danish shortbread cookies, and golden cake mixes. While this is a local business, they do ship all over the US, to all 50 states. But, you can save some shipping coin and head to a variety of local shops like Hornbacher's, Family Fare, Cash Wise, Prime Cut Meats, John and Wayne Meats, and more locations all over the Midwest and beyond (check their website for a full list). Did you know, Freddy's is the oldest and largest lefse bakery in the US? How cool is that!

Sonder Bakehouse
Loved for its macarons, custom cookies, take-and-bake rolls, beautifully (and tasty) cake creations, and, of course, the "Good Stuff," Sonder Bakehouse has become a staple in the West Fargo community. Owner, Kayla, also has a passion for international organization, charity:water—which she is hosting the second annual gala for this May! Hands down, the best thing you can grab inside the bakery on any given day—the Good Stuff, which is a cup with all the "good stuff" leftover from her baking, some of her creations being strawberries n' cream (vanilla cake, fresh strawberries, strawberry puree, pastry cream, and strawberries swiss meringue) a vanilla-berry mix (vanilla bean cake, triple berry pureed compote, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, berry swiss meringue, buttercream, and topped with strawberry cream cheese), banana cream (banana cake, cinnamon crumbles, cream cheese frosting, and pastry cream), and many more.

You may not think BBQ when you think North Dakota, but you could be surprised at the award-winning dishes at Spitfire Bar & Grill. Junkyard Brewing West Fargo
The highly anticipated expansion of Junkyard Brewing into West Fargo introduced the West Fargo community to the brewery, as much as it introduced the brewery's fans to the developing and dynamic downtown of West Fargo. The taproom is a transformed 1979 building that previously housed banks like Bell Bank, and the new space merges retro-modern aesthetics with the brewery's distinct personality. The renovation pays tribute to the original building's midcentury design, like the main bar that wraps around an old bank vault, now serving as the beer keg cooler. They've got an outdoor patio area (complete with rooftop seating), three bars (two on the main level immediately upon entry and another on the upper level), second-floor seating that overlooks a two-story central atrium, kombucha, Junkyard's classics and experimentals, complimentary popcorn, games, pop-up food and events, and much more!
"My favorite thing about Junkyard West is that it offers another neutral space to the community, especially in the winter months. They have games, ample seating, and a relaxed energy. I would love to go there in the afternoon, get a kombucha, order some food for delivery, and do some work, and maybe even grab a brew at the end of my day! Also, it's huge—one time that I visited, the immediate parking lot was full and there was still so much seating. Junkyard West has some more breathing room compared to their Moorhead location, but the same great vibe!"

Its underground setting, climate-controlled environment, and handicap-accessible facilities make the shooting experience a must-visit for both serious marksmen and recreational shooters. The center also offers classes for adults and youth and hosts various shooting matches and other events.

WHY THE RED RIVER MARKET TOPS MY BUCKET LIST
BY AMANDA FROST, MARKETING COORDINATOR, FOLKWAYS
TThe ice has thawed, the air smells like fresh rain, and the sidewalks are busy again. Fargo has made it through a La Nina winter. Each spring in the Midwest fills me with a resurgence of energy that far surpasses the motivation I felt writing my January resolutions. At the top of my spring bucket list? The return of the first farmers market of the season.
On May 17, the Red River Market will return to West Fargo, transforming the space into a vibrant gathering of fresh produce, handmade goods, and community connection. The market will be held at the POW/ MIA Plaza, an outdoor hub in downtown West Fargo that serves as a dedicated green space, offering year-round programming, and was created to honor veterans. After months of cold, there’s no better way to enjoy the turn of the season than with friends and family by celebrating outside with local:
• VENDORS & OFFERINGS
Fresh produce, pantry staples, baked goods, art, hot food, beverages, and more.
• LIVE MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT
Featuring local bands and performers to create a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.
• FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES
A great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with your children.
• SNAP/EBT PROGRAM
The market accepts SNAP/EBT and offers a $15 match per person to increase access to fresh food.
For the past decade, the Red River Market has been a regular appointment on my weekends. As a lifelong Midwesterner, I’m passionate about supporting local businesses and fostering community connections. That same energy fuels my work as the Marketing Coordinator at Folkways, a nonprofit that fosters a sense of belonging through events like the Red River Market, Night Bazaars, and Christkindlmarkt.
True community is built through showing up, supporting one another, and creating space for shared experiences.
That’s why the market holds such significance–it brings family, friends, and strangers together to celebrate the joys of locally grown food, live performances, and small businesses.
Here’s my ultimate bucket list for making the most of the Red River Market in West Fargo.
PHOTOS
CONNECT WITH VENDORS
Each vendor at the market has spent the winter pouring their passion into their craft, and I love striking up conversations to learn more about their work. One of my favorite questions to ask is, “What product are you most excited about this season?”
Every time the vendors light up, because who doesn't love to nerd out about what they are passionate about? It’s a simple way to learn more about their process while building a genuine connection.
I have been introduced to so many amazing natural soda flavors created by FlannelFizz ranging from Lemon Lime Rosemary to Rhubarb.
BRING A BLANKET & STAY AWHILE
One of the best parts of the market is the atmosphere— music, kids laughing, and people gathering to enjoy a bite. I always bring a picnic blanket so I can settle in on the turf and soak up the sun. It’s a nice sensory experience, listening to the music, seeing the mural behind the musicians, and feeling the grass. I enjoy a spring roll from Nit’s Spring Roll and a cookie from Jen’s Breads, plus stopping at the West Fargo Library on Wheels to pick up a book or a game before settling back on the grass to relax. Before I know it, an hour has passed, and I am ready to move.
STROLL THROUGH SHEYENNE STREET
This part of Sheyenne Street is a hidden gem for local shopping. After browsing the over 30 vendors at the market, I love taking a stroll to check out the surrounding businesses— sipping a craft beer at Junkyard Brewery, fueling up with a coffee from Thunder Coffee, and gathering home decor inspiration at Scan Design. It’s the perfect street for window shopping and discovering new favorites.
PICK THE FUNKIEST VEGETABLE
Forget the perfectly uniform produce you see in grocery stores—this year, I’m challenging myself to grab the weirdestshaped vegetable I can find. Inspired by one of Red River Markets’ vendors, Farmented, I’m excited to rethink what fresh food should look like and try something new. This local brand embraces quirky, imperfect veggies, inspiring me to try something new in the kitchen.
BUILD A BOUQUET
It may not be warm enough yet for the flowers to bloom in my garden, but I can still bring color to my home with a hand-built bouquet from one of my favorite vendors at the market, Exit 44. It’s the perfect creative activity and it comes with a jar–ready to go straight on my table when I get home. The Red River Market is more than just a weekend outing–it’s a place to remind us of the joys of supporting local, connecting with neighbors, and celebrating the vibrancy of the community.
MAKE SURE TO MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR MAY 17 AT THE POW/ MIA PLAZA ON SHEYENNE STREET IN WEST FARGO! SEE YOU THERE!

joyFELT LLC
Meet The MAKER MAKER
By Ashley Morken, Owner, Unglued Photos
Morken
I have been obsessed with the felt flower bouquet I purchased from joyFELT LLC a few craft markets ago and how perfectly they go on our dining table (and last forever)! Mary-Michael’s creativity and level of handcrafted work knows no bounds and I’m so excited for you to meet her below!
Tell us a bit about yourself. I jokingly tell people that I'm an old lady at heart because I love doing puzzles, word games, and crafting (my husband and daughter will confirm). Growing up, my two biggest interests were always sports and crafts... not really two activities typically found in the same social circles, but they both served as a type of catharsis for me. When it comes down to it, I simply enjoy being active and having something to do. Nowadays, my family and crafting occupy my time. I spend my days going on adventures with my daughter, visiting practically every park in the metro area, learning new things, and seeing the world through the wondrous view of a three-year-old. As a family, we love to attend sporting events (Go Cobbers!) and be outside. We also have two large, lovable floofs— Great Pyrenees—so our home is never quiet.
Describe what type of products you make under joyFELT LLC. Under joyFELT LLC, I make home decor ranging from felt flowers to felt play food. My felt flowers range from individual stems customers can purchase to create their own bouquet or arrangement, to pre-designed and styled arrangements, to wreaths with felt floral and foliage designs. I have
provided by Ashley
a whole menu of felt food items for the kiddos (or adults, no judgment) as well as garland, ornaments, and more.
Tell us how you got started with your businesses.
Like I said before, I've always loved crafting. So when the time came for our daughter's baptism, I wanted to make some cute decor to hang on the walls for her party that we could keep for a long time. I decided to try to make some felt floral wreaths of different sizes. I started out making "crafty-looking" flowers, then decided to challenge myself to start making flowers that looked more realistic and I was HOOKED! Finally, I just asked, "What if I did THIS?" I had made felt food years before for my twin nephew and niece's birthday and it was a hit. I started to put some ideas together about what I'd like to create. It began with the wreaths, then tulips and roses, then the food, and took off from there.
What are your personal favorite items you've created so far?
One of my absolute personal faves is a custom wreath I made for a dear friend to match the decor in her dining room. She gave me a color palette and asked me to make something pretty, and it's still one of my favorites. If picking a flower, I'd have to say the Easter lily is my current favorite. It just has such an impact when you see it. If I had to pick from the felt food, I'd probably go with the felt pizza and toppings. There's just something about it when I open that tiny pizza box that makes me smile.
What is the most popular item you specifically sell?
My lavender bundles are definitely my most popular item. They make a big impact for such a little bundle.
What is something you've enjoyed the most about doing this handcrafted business?
I have loved meeting so many new people. I was incredibly nervous when I started out, not knowing if anyone would ever enjoy or appreciate what I was making. But fellow makers and crafters are so kind, always providing encouragement and advice. And the customers?! They've been awesome! I have geeked out over flowers, crafting, dogs, and so much more with customers
visiting my booth. It has been a blast to meet so many vibrant people with such different interests and hobbies. It's just crazy to me how warm and kind makers and customers alike have been.
Where does your inspiration come for new creations you do? You've got a fun variety of wreaths, florals, kids creations, and more! Most of my inspiration comes from my surroundings—on a walk, at a store, or at the playground with my daughter. There is a ton of beauty in our natural world and the possibilities are endless. Then I think to myself, "How would I like this arranged if I were to have it in my home?" Sometimes it turns into a floral arrangement or sometimes it's a wreath. Sometimes I shelve that idea for a later time—you do not want to go looking through my brain... too many ideas up there. It’d be easy to get lost. Many of my designs also lean towards a crafty Scandinavian aesthetic. I like natural wood tones, simple designs, and a look that just makes you feel happy and at home. My daughter is also a huge source of inspiration. She is the perfect test subject when it comes to making felt food. Her play kitchen has so many of my prototypes. She likes to come into my office and go, "Oooooh! Mommy, can you make me that? And that? And this?" She is the best inspiration and also the best hype man (or woman), always telling me she thinks my flowers are pretty as she leans in to sniff them (no they do not actually smell).
What is something people might find surprising about working with felt?
Felt is surprisingly forgiving. It can also be shaped pretty easily by just bending and slightly stretching it. You can apply heat to help warp or shape it. You can even add a stiffener to create a more rigid effect.
