Alexandra told me she does this each month, so I’ll follow suit...I love local beer, it’s a passion of mine and I do deem myself a beer nerd. So, here are five beers to try this summer at the metro’s various breweries. Try them all and tell me which one you liked most (@IAMNOLANP on Twitter)!

BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN

1 Shake-o-Matic IPA Series: Junkyard Brewing Company This is where summer starts and finishes for me. I love IPAs, like any typical ordinary male. Having my Masters in IPA theory, the Shake-O-Matic series is unlike any other IPA you'll find in this area. You taste the hops last and the fruit first, it's usually the other way around for me. With a wide variety of flavors like guava, peach, mango, orange, strawberry and more, you'll find one Shake-o that you'll love.

2 Brain Squeeze Series: Drekker Brewing Company Drekker's Brain Squeezes are an All-American sour. Not only do they offer up the tartness you expect from a sour, but a wide diversity of flavor profiles. From berries to mango to pomegranate, Drekker has literally put every fruit in a Brain Squeeze at one time or another. Perfect for a Friday after work.

3 "Wait, this guy, again?" If you said that to yourself after seeing my ugly mug on this page, I'm sorry to disappoint you. As you can see, I am not Alexandra Martin, but do not fret, Fargo Monthly readers, Ms. Martin is still your editor. Here is why I am making my much-anticipated return to Fargo Monthly: I'm bored. Those of you who read our other publications will know me from Bison Illustrated. Before that, I got my start at this company editing this very magazine. Anyway, we're taking the summer off over at Bison Illustrated. So, I really have nothing to do around the office now. As much as I'd love to distract my fellow coworkers, the top brass said I need to actually do something these next few months. It's

sensible, although, I did have plane tickets booked to Europe, thinking I had two months off. Classic miscommunication, but I'll eat the cancellation fee. Anyway, here I am, back where I started. Don't worry, it's only temporary, Alexandra has more work on her plate than I do, so I'm here to fill in the cracks. I'm the equivalent to weather stripping here at Spotlight, you don't NEED me, but I'm nice to have around. Hope you enjoy this issue, Fargo. I know I had fun running all over this city again, it was a nice change of pace. Hopefully, I didn't drastically mess it all up. See you around,

Greenway Imperial/Double IPA: Rhombus Guys Rhombus Guys makes their beer a few miles north in Grand Forks, but they do find their way to the Fargo location downtown. You now know that I love IPAs and the Greenway is as juicy and hoppy as it gets. This hazy little number goes down smooth with a slice of pizza too.

4 Super Slurp Series: Junkyard Brewing Company My girlfriend loves this beer. I've only had sips here and there, but I can understand why this is one of Junkyard's best sellers when it's on tap and in cans. It does not taste like beer, giving non-beer lovers a chance to love the suds. On top of that, they offer up flavors like raspberry, guava and cherry hibiscus too.

5 Kenny's Lemonade: Fargo Brewing Company This stuff is literally lemonade, I'm sure of it. With a low ABV percentage, Kenny's Lemonade is one of the most flavorful radlers around today. That being said, Fargo Brewing Company has succeeded in sacrificing alcohol content for flavor with this lemonade. It's a staple at a Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks game for me and is perfect for a day on the lake too.

When you think of the 1980s, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Chances are, whatever memory or recollection you have from that decade is narrated by the vocals of Vince Neil. Formerly the lead man in hair metal giant Mötley Crüe, Neil is still one of the most recognizable voices and personas around today. He will descend upon the first day of Happy Harry’s Ribfest to play his solo work and possibly some new songs too. Oh, did we mention he’ll be belting out his Crüe classics, as well? Best bring leather.

Two more staples in the 80s glam metal era are Firehouse and KIX. Firehouse has been around since the late 1980s, gaining popularity along with others in the genre like Guns N’ Roses. Their 1990 song “Don’t Treat Me Bad” was not only a monster hit, but it invented a sound that would later be adopted by several 90s era groups. KIX catapulted to the top of the charts in 1989 with the still successful power ballad “Don’t Close Your Eyes.” Expect to hear that with a more up-tempo brand of rock on the final day of Happy Harry’s Ribfest.

Admit it, you have sung the chorus to Incubus’ mega-hit “Drive” at least once in your lifetime. If you haven’t heard yourself sing “Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there. With open arms and open eyes,” there is a chance you’re culturally irrelevant. That’s okay, you can still redeem yourself by seeing the alternative juggernaut at Bluestem on August 3. While they are often defined by “Drive” in the mainstream, Incubus has carved out their place in rock history with a unique blend of alternative, rock, funk and even hip-hop influences in their music. Their discography is worth perusing simply based on their ability to make one record wholly different from the next.

Twins Of Evil: Rob Zombie & Marilyn Manson ‘Hell Never Dies Tour’ August 9 at 7 p.m. Fargodome

Calling Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson’s dual tour ‘Twins of Evil’ might be the understatement of the century. Two of the biggest names in heavy metal, both are equally controversial. Manson is perhaps one of the most polarizing and vexed figures in modern popular culture, not only for his aesthetic, which is often seen as androgynous and borderline sadist to some, but also, his lyrics, which are as cutting and striking as his aura. Zombie grew out of his wildly successful band White Zombie in the late 90s to become one of heavy metal’s most regarded solo figures. From smash hits to “Dragula” to directing several horror films of his own creation, Zombie has become a virtuoso of all things appalling. Hence, why he (and Manson) will forever be regarded as two of the best to ever do it in the genre of shock and awe.

Little Big Town is summer quantified into sound. Every North Dakotan, Minnesotan or lake rat has their summer hit “Pontoon” on repeat as the weather warms. If you don’t, you’re actually not doing summer correct and you may not be a citizen of North Dakota or Minnesota, it’s scientifically proven. At the first ever Sister Cities Smokeout at Bluestem Amphitheater, Little Big Town will be closing down the entire get together. Along with their music, look for good barbecue and beer too.

Taj Mahal Quartet

Taj Mahal is long regarded as one of the most influential blues figures in history. With the ability to play guitar, piano, harmonica, banjo and many other instruments, the Taj Mahal Quartet is musicianship personified. The group often incorporated world music sounds, relying on a Caribbean sound to differentiate themselves from other artists.

You look at the artists featured within this performance and you could be saying many things to yourself. One could be “Oh, hell yeah, the guy from Marcy Playground is going to play ‘Sex and Candy,’ that was my jam in 1997.” Or you could be saying “No way, the guy from Fountains of Wayne is going to be there. Is the chick from the ‘Stacey’s Mom’ music video going to be there too?” Both might be misguided assumptions. This collective of songwriters is using this tour and performance to showcase their ability to write lyrics. While it will feel like a rock show, “Stacey’s Mom” may not be on the setlist.

Matisyahu is as existential an artist as they come. While his sound ranges from reggae to rock to hip hop to alternative, his lyrics have a constant theme: peace and positivity. Two of the artist’s biggest hits “One Day” and “King Without A Crown” bring to you images of a world free of violence and full of positive energy. However, with his infectious sound, Matisyahu offers the listener a repeatable song while also giving them a larger issue to ponder.

Pentatonix have become one of the world’s biggest pop groups with one exception, they don’t rely on instruments. The acapella group uses their vocals to captivate audiences around the globe. With a mixture of classic cover songs and their own originals, the Pentatonix have truly carved out their place in popular music.

Bluestem: 50th Anniversary of Peace & Music August 16 and 17 Bluestem Amphitheater

Woodstock. We’ve all heard of it, but very few have lived it. With this 50th anniversary performance at Bluestem Amphitheater, local acts will pay homage to those original artists that played on that New York stage in 1969. Artists to be covered include Jimi Hendrix, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills, and Nash as well as The Who and many more.

A Fargo-Moorhead staple, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks will once again occupy Newman Outdoor Field this summer. The team will welcome in a new manager in Jim Bennett, who takes over for Michael Schlact, who left in the offseason for an opportunity with the MLB’s Milwaukee Brewers. Several recognizable names will return to the RedHawks roster this summer like former NDSU standout Tim Colwell. In the fall 2016, I started volunteering for the Restorative Justice Program with Clay County: a community building program everyone should know about! We are grateful for Amanda’s vocation on the well-being of our youth! This is why I look up to her as a stellar woman I have tremendously learned from. Namaste! Can you give us a historical background and timeline of Restorative Justice (RJ)? What is your mission? Although the principle of restorative justice has been around for centuries, the Clay County Restorative Justice Program has been serving youth, victims and the community for close to 20 years. The program began with the Clay County Collaborative before switching to the Clay County Sheriff’s Department in 2000. Then in 2009, the program switched to the Clay County Attorney’s office where it remains today. Within the past year or so, the program has expanded to being in the schools as well. The concept of restorative justice is something that is applied differently, depending on the program or location. For our mission and us, restorative justice is an approach to crime that focuses on four main things: 1. Taking time to understand the

of Empowering Youth and Building Community

victimization that occurs 2. Holds the youth accountable for their actions through a “circle” process 3. Develops agreements for youth to make things right with the victim(s) and the community 4. Supports the youth in moving forward. Why was this community program Started? What communities do you serve? Who gets referred to RJ? The program was started as an alternative approach to crime and hopes to reduce the amount of youth entering the criminal justice system. The Clay County Restorative Justice serves all communities in Clay County. Youth in Clay County get referred to the program due to them committing a criminal incident. This could include theft, assault, disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property, trespassing, etc. Upon successful completion of the program, the citation is dismissed. How often do you meet? A program staff typically meets with the youth and their parent once or twice to discuss the incident. At these meetings, a trained facilitator discusses the incident with the youth and parent focusing on what happened, who they affected and how are they going to move forward and learn from this. Once appropriate, and after determining affected parties’ interest in participating in the program, the youth moves forward to a “circle” process with either the victim(s)/affected parties or community members. Here is where the youth is held accountable by others and develops an agreement to make things right with the victim(s) and the community. In 2018, the program worked with over 160 youth. What activities does the program refer youth to in the community? As part of their agreement, youth are often assigned to give back to their community. We have connected youth to volunteer work at local food banks, homeless shelters, nursing homes, churches and several other places. Our youth have also helped neighbors in need with shoveling during the long FM winter, sandbagging

for the flood, raking leaves, cooking meals and other household tasks. Kids are often referred to join a school activity or meet with a school counselor. In the summer months, the program may refer kids to the Moorhead Police Department summer youth program and other local summer camps/activities. How can the community help support the program? Anyone can consider volunteering with the program as a community member upon completion of an application, interview and background check. We currently have around 15 volunteers that put in over 200 hours in 2018. For more information on volunteering, you can check out our program website or Facebook page by searching Clay County Restorative Justice. Who are your biggest community partners when running the RJ program? Our biggest community partners are the Clay County Attorney’s Office, local law enforcement, school resource officers and juvenile probation. We also work closely and take referrals from parents and the community. Our funding sources are the State of Minnesota: Office of Justice Programs, the Clay County Collaborative and the Clay County Board of Commissioners. Without these community partners and funding sources, the program wouldn’t be possible. We also have a great group of community volunteers that help keep increasing referrals possible. What activities do you enjoy doing in the FM summer? I enjoy playing tennis in Island Park, going to a play at the FM Community Theater or grabbing a coffee at Moorhead’s Moxie Java. I am looking forward to the Red River Farmers Market and the Moorhead Farmers Market starting soon. I do have a little sister through Big Brother Big Sister and we enjoy going to River Arts in Memorial Park. I also will be a mentor for the Moorhead Police Department’s summer youth program where we take local youth on field trips once a week throughout the summer.

Tell us a bit about yourself: My name is Wyatt Nelson and I will be in 8th grade at Oak Grove in August. I’m 13 years old and love biking, scary movies and taking (thousands) of pictures of my cat Cali. Describe what you make under All Things Creative: I make huge and tiny stuffed narwhals, other stuffed animals and finger puppets. I also make a wide variety of cat toys! They include coffee, shrimp, bread, pancakes and Avo-cat-os! What is one of your most favorite items you have made? I love everything I make, but I’d have to choose the baby narwhal plushies! They

are so tiny and adorable. Every time I make one, I get so attached that it is hard to sell it because they are so stinkin’ cute! I like my big narwhals too but the tiny ones are #1. How did you get into sewing? I was around 7 when I started machine sewing. I just sat down at the sewing machine and ran with it. I’ve gained skills from looking at products and wondering, “How did they make it?” followed by, “I could make that!” That mentality has allowed me to keep interest and learn to make about everything. What are your most essential tools? If you hand me felt or fabric, fiberfill, catnip, a sewing machine and a pair of

scissors, I can make just about anything. What are some things you are hoping to start making in the future? I have been interested in making more miniature things as I am good at working with tiny stuff and can make things with a great level of detail. Sculpting has been interesting to me and I hope to do some of that in the future, as well. I am fairly talented when I work with watercolor so I want to have more fun with that. What is a word that best describes you? Creative. I know that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always taken a look at things in a creative way. I excel in art and love using my creativity to make new and unique things. I am also a perfectionist, so if something isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite

right, it bothers me and I will fix it. I look at projects on Pinterest and try to recreate them to make them my own. What is something you are looking forward to this summer? In the summer, I have more time to experiment with new projects. I like riding my bike, hanging out with friends and going to garage sales. Someday, I would love to help teach the Kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Summer Camp at Unglued, which I attended for many summers when I was younger. How can our community help your business grow? Blueberry Mango Basil Sorbet Ingredients

• 2c. frozen blueberries • 2c. frozen mango chunks • 4 medium to large basil leaves + more for garnish • 1 - 5 to 6 oz. container of vanilla yogurt • 3T. granulated sugar • 1/4c. + of water (or fruit juice of choice)

Preparation • In a food processor using an ‘S’ blade, add the frozen fruit, basil, yogurt and sugar. Run the processor in bursts to start the blend. Add the 1/4 c. of water (or juice) and continue to process in bursts, scraping down the sides of the bowl periodically to ensure all the fruit is blended.

5 Tips

For Prioritizing That Morning Workout BY Patrick Metzger

won’t lie, it’s one of the hardest habits for most people to start. That alarm can be a rude awakening when it starts blaring three-feet from your head, making you shudder at the thought of having to trade in your warm blankets and that feeling of peaceful bliss for a pair of athletic shoes and the gym. Getting up and active early in the morning isn’t always easy, but it’s one of the best habits you can create in your life. Not only are you prioritizing getting healthy and increasing your energy levels for the day, but you’re developing a higher level of self-control and mental mastery by performing a difficult task every morning. Now, if you haven’t yet started the habit or routine of crushing some physical activity before you head to work or the sun coming up, keep an open mind as you look to conquer it. First and foremost, know that it will take time to get used to it. It’s more than likely not something you’re going to be able to implement and feel completely comfortable with at the onset. Second, have the confidence and self-belief that you’ll be able to not only do it, but continue to do it on a regular basis. Bottom line – if it’s important to you and something you really need to do, then it comes down to you owning the responsibility of taking action toward it.

1. Establish The Why

At the heart of any true transformation or habit change is the deep down why for really doing it. Yes, you probably want to work out to lose some weight and fit back into those clothes you’ve tucked away but put some deep thought into the REAL reasons for it. For me, working out has always been important because of the energy boost it provides throughout the day, as well as the increased confidence I get from accomplishing physical goals and seeing my body improve and change for the better. Those two items also radiate into and have a positive effect on every other aspect of my life. It’s also extremely important to my wife and I to set a great example for our daughter and show her that health and self-care are important.

3. Music As Motivation

Instead of waking up to an annoying buzz or beep, set your alarm to go off to a great rock tune or some motivational music. This will immediately cue and train your brain to go into workout mode. I know it’s a lot easier for me to wake up and be ready to go when some Breaking Benjamin, Tool or a little Thunderstruck lights me up at 5:45 a.m. If you start to get that case of the Mondays again, change out your tune for another one to reignite and trigger your brain into the routine again. One more item, permanently ditch that toxic snooze button. Don’t give yourself that option of retreat.

If you want to be successful in the morning, then it starts in the evening the night before. Prep everything needed so that you’re doing the absolute minimum in the morning. Get workout clothes set out, your water bottle ready in the fridge and a morning snack set out that you can quickly grab. There’s nothing that will kill your morning motivation more than waking up and realizing you need to do all those things yet before you can even get to your workout. Also, prioritize getting to bed earlier by taking care of those next day items you find yourself doing before bed earlier in the night. I like to get everything ready for the next day immediately after our evening meal so that it’s done and I can enjoy the night.

One of the biggest reasons it’s so hard to drag yourself out of bed and get to the gym may be because you don’t have a plan for once you get there. It’s hard to get motivated for something when you have no idea what it will entail and you feel lost without guidance. Have a strong and solid plan based on your long-term goals, but put all your focus on your daily and shortterm goals within the workout and for the day that will get you to the long-term results you seek over time.

5. Keep The Consistency

Your body functions more efficiently and optimally when you go to sleep and awake at the same times. Scrap the three days a week workout plan and consistently get up early throughout the week. Even if you’re not working out on one or two of those days, get out of bed and accomplish some things. You’ll quickly notice higher and more consistent energy levels once you regulate your morning wake time. Plus, getting up an hour earlier every day is the equivalent of over two more weeks of living every year!

This is a fun spring/summer whiskey-based drink that's not too overpowering. The muddled blueberries add just the right amount of sweetness without being too fruity.

Walnut bitters balance out the fruity flavors of the blueberry and citrus of the lemon, giving the end result some richness.

Blueberry adds a subtle sweetness that's not as powerful as a strawberry, for example, but still is refreshing and summery.

Sage-infused simple syrup: Ness notes that an infused simple syrup is the easiest and most versatile thing a bartender can make and keep at home. For this sage-infused simple syrup, boil a combination of equal parts sugar and water until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the mixture to a simmer and add sage leaves (about eight is a good number) and allow them to seep for 30 minutes to an hour (depending on how strong you want the infusion). Cool and transfer to an airtight container and save for future cocktail use!

Fresh ingredients work best for this. The Red River Market opens for the season July 13, so mark your calendars and pick up some fresh blueberries and sage!

Depending on the study, we may start out with a lot of interested and potential participants, however, that pool gets narrowed down as we review medical history and the patient’s current medications. There is a lot of criteria that we review that could exclude someone from participating and the reason for that is patient safety.” What a trial looks like The trial participation experience at Lillestol will be top of the line, especially considering their brand new office space located within the MedPark Medical Center in south Fargo. A priority for Lillestol is to provide their patients an atmosphere that is welcoming, comfortable and professional. Kim Peterson, Chief Operating Officer, said that the trial participation schedule and time commitment for their patients will involve no overnight or weekend stays and is very much like visiting a doctor’s clinic on an ongoing basis. The clinic visits are generally short and participants are also paid for their time. Brown took us through the Lillestol process of participating in a clinical trial.

1. You may express interest in a trial via their company website, a phone call, email and/or responding to an advertisement you’ve heard or seen. You will be directed to a Recruitment Coordinator to discuss the trial(s) that you have interest in. You may be invited to the clinic for a quick, no obligation Health Screen. 2. At a Health Screen, the Coordinator will briefly go through your medical history and may also check cholesterol, blood sugar levels or other health indicators to determine which trial(s) you may be a fit for. If it is determined that you would not fit in any of their current studies, you will be invited to be entered in a database and notified of upcoming trials that you may be eligible for. 3. If you are interested and determined to be a potential fit for a trial, you would then schedule a Screening Visit. To begin the Screening Visit, you would read and review an informed consent form, which will go through all the information about the trial in laymen terms. 4. Upon completing the Screening Visit and entry criteria, you would be officially enrolled or “randomized” to the trial and begin receiving your assigned trial medication or comparator. 5. The trial schedule and number of clinic visits will be dependent on which trial you end up participating in. You’ll return to the clinic for ongoing visits throughout your

participation and for the length of the trial. The length of trial participation varies depending on the study. For Future Generations While there are many reasons to participate in a trial, one of the most important is that trial participants play an integral part in advancing medicine for future generations. As your children or grandchildren age, they may experience the same health conditions you have. Your participation could affect what treatments would be available for those health conditions in the future. Throughout their years of conducting studies, Lillestol has seen a lot of success with new medications and the treatment of conditions like diabetes, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia. “Some of the patients on our trials have never experienced anything that works well to treat their condition. They are very excited when a trial medication works for them,” said Peterson. “Trials are the only way that new medications get to market for the general public.” Lillestol is always looking for more participants in their current and upcoming studies. They usually have around 40 trials going on at one time in various indications related to internal medicine. "Our mission is to enrich the greater community through theatrical and educational opportunities of high artistic quality," said executive director Eloise Breikjern. FMCT's mission is simple enough in principle and it is one they have succeeded in accomplishing over the last 73 years. Breikjern notes that over 1,000 FargoMoorhead residents volunteer their time to FMCT. "FMCTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theatrical season hosts up to 10 stage and musical productions, where volunteers from the community are the actors. Each year, productions offer up to 400 acting opportunities to area thespians. FMCTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performing arts education programming annually provides over 470 children the opportunity to perform in art classes throughout the year," she said.

While the organization is looking to enrich our community with high-quality artistic productions, it is not the only goal they have. In order to carry out their ultimate mission, FMCT needs the community to engage with their shows.

"Strengthening our community engagement is very important to FMCT and to meet this goal we are producing shows that excite the community and are of excellent quality. This was shown with our recent production of MAMMA MIA! Over the course of eleven performances over 3,500 community members attended the production," Breikjern. "Our 20192020 season line-up is a great season of shows to delight actors and patrons. Our commitment to educational programming for children and adults is also a part of our mission and creating a strong program is important to us."

Currently, FMCT is the longest-running theatre organization in the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota. For that, FMCT is still a vital piece to the puzzle that is Fargo-Moorhead.

Thanks to their stellar productions and selective process in the shows they do produce, FMCT has seen their attendance increase. In part, this increased engagement helped FMCT lease out the Studio 6 space on Broadway. This space is mainly used for education classes and rehearsals.

FMCT offers up a $35 per year membership to those interested in helping grow the organization further. However, Breikjern notes that simply enjoying an FMCT production is support enough. "Come to a performance at the theatre, become a member, and engage your children or grandchildren in theatre. FMCT is a fun place to be!" she said.

"Over the past three seasons, FMCT has
