1 Harold’s on Main On Feb 1, Harold’s on Main opened in Moorhead. The environment, the drinks, the location, the everything is ideal! Talk about picture perfect.
SAFE & SOUND Dear Readers, When I first moved to Fargo I followed the traditional "Welcome to Fargo" starter package. I posted an photo on Instagram of the Fargo Theater sign. I ate cookie dough in Roberts Alley. I bought a bike to ride around downtown on. And I read "How Fargo Of You" by Marc de Celle. In de Celle's book, he discusses his seemingly crazy decision to move from warm and dry Phoenix all the way up to notoriously cold and snowy Fargo. He notes that a huge part of this decision to migrate north was in hope to have a good safe place to raise his children. This has stuck with me. Time and time again, I have people asking me why I moved here. People both natives to the area and those who have never stepped foot in the state, alike. While the reasons why people move here vary, de Celle's
words about desiring the comfort, kindness and safety that Fargo provides have stuck with me. While I don't plan on raising a family any time soon, I can see the magnetism Fargo has for families. In this issue, we talked with different local families about their favorite parts of the area and what family activities they enjoy most. It was exciting to learn about all that this area has to offer that hadn't even been on my radar! Here I was thinking I knew all of Fargo's secrets, yet the family and youth scene introduced to me a whole new world. Within these pages, you just might discover something new to you as well. Until next month,

2 Red River Winter Market One of the things I miss most about the warmer season is the Red River Market. Lucky for me, they hosted an indoor winter market at the Hjemkomst Center so I got to get my fix of locally made goodies.
3 Giving Hearts Day We had such a great time making our special Giving Hearts Day issue of the magazine in January. To be able to experience the big day after all the hype was truly wonderful. What a generous community we live in!
4 Christina Holmes Salon In the midst of the cold winter it’s nice to freshen things up some. I headed over to Christina Holmes Salon and she treated my hair to a balayage that is perfect for the warmer days to (hopefully) soon come.
5 Unglued Craft Market If you know me, you know I love all things crafty. The 9th Annual Unglued Craft Fest is the premier event for all things locallymade, so this was my dream come true. Plus it was a great opportunity to get out and meet all sorts of creative folks—I can’t complain!

Mike and Tasha Barrett live in their West Fargo home with three daughters, Hayley (16), Emma (10) and Anna (6). They are a beautifully blended family, sharing time with their oldest daughter with her father and step-mother in Fargo. With Mike being a Senior Escalation Engineer at Microsoft, Tasha a realtor at Park Co. Realtors and the three kids all active in school and extracurriculars, this quintet stays busy!
Favorite way to get energy out, for both you and the kids?
CrossFit for Mom, Courts Plus play area or Sky Zone for the kids. In the summer, the kids also enjoy the splash pad and the parks near our home.
What are some tips for surviving a work/life balance?
Don’t forget to take care of yourself, and try to keep it fun. Even when work is hectic, remember to prioritize the family as well.
How have you seen your parenting change over the years/age ranges of your children?
As our girls grow older, we are trying to find the right way to let them assert their own independence. They are growing so fast. But an added benefit of older children is no more diapers!
What is a local familyfriendly event you look forward to?
We enjoy the street fair every year because of all the booths and amenities. It has great entertainment and food. We also really enjoy the downtown Red River Market.
What are your favorite ways to take care of yourself?
A manicure/pedicure always makes me feel spoiled.
What’s a fun weekend local getaway you love? We love to do family trips to the cities to visit various attractions like Vikings games, Mall of America, Valley Fair and the Science Museum.
What’s your favorite way to treat yourself as a parent?
Elite Therapeutic Massage! Shelle is amazing. I (Tasha) also love spending time with my friends. I have been in a coffee group that meets every week for the last eight years. These friendships allow me time to step out of the mom role and focus on me.
What’s your favorite kidfriendly restaurant/ kid’s meal offering?
Village Inn. The kids love the chocolate chip pancakes and “pirate booty.” Also Sunday brunch at Granite City.
What are your favorite things to do as a family in the winter?
Go to the movies, watch family movies at home, take part in Girl Scouts (including selling cookies and pinewood derby). Our girls are also in dance so we spend many weekends traveling to their competitions. 17

Carrie and Jesse Feigum are high-school sweethearts, together for 21 years and married now for almost 13 years. Jesse is one of the owners of local-favorite, Drekker Brewing Company and Carrie stays at their Moorhead home with their four boys; Jonah (11), Seth (9), Henry (5) and Benjamin (3).
What are some tips for surviving a work/life balance?
I’ve been fortunate enough to spend the majority of my time as a parent staying home with my kids, which poses its own survival needs. That being said, I’ve always found that planning ahead will save the day. So, if I know it’s going to be a long work day/week, I’ll make sure to have things prepared or on hand for quick meals and snacks. It seems overly simple, but for my boys, having a good snack will solve ALMOST anything. Of course having a supportive partner is helpful, we back each other up!
What’s one piece of advice you wish you would have received being a parent?
Advice is a funny thing. You can get the very best advice prior to becoming a parent and then, when you’re in the thick of it, the advice goes out the window and you just have to figure it out. Every child is different and it’s not a one size fits all type of situation. So I guess my answer would be, just relax. You will figure it out. You will figure out what works best for that baby/child and your family. Relax and take lots of pictures and video!
Favorite way to get energy (of you and/or your child) out?
We go to the park or just go outside. We moved last June and we live in a wonderful neighborhood across from the river. So we go exploring a lot, walking down along the river, looking for animals and just enjoying outside! There have been times where I have taken advantage of the open gym times at TNT Fitness, too. Skyzone is a great option for us as well, now that all of our kids are able to have fun jumping.
What are your favorite ways to take care of yourself?
Jesse and I have always been really good at having date nights. Obviously it has gotten harder with the number of kids we’ve had. But it is still really important, so we do it as much as we can. We are lucky to be from the area so both of our parents are close by and they help us out often. If we don’t have the opportunity to get away without the kids, we set aside time together after they go to bed. Currently, we are re-watching Game of Thrones in anticipation of the upcoming final season. We aren’t very exciting people. Ha!
What are your favorite things to do as a family in the summer?
We go to our family lake cabin when we can. Jesse and I are both from Barnesville, MN, so Potato Days and the Clay County Fair are always highlights of the summer. We often have backyard fires with lots of s’mores (obviously). We have also done a backyard movie that was really fun and that is on the list for this summer for sure.
As far as doing things for myself, I work part time at Unglued downtown. Even though this is technically a job, for me it’s really a time to get out of the house and clear my head. I have also been part of book clubs, I love to read. Sometimes, I’ll even get out in the evening and just wonder around Barnes and Noble. I love it. Jesse goes on an ice fishing trip every year with his brothers that I know he looks forward to. He also goes on quite a few “work” trips, I know they are work related, but ultimately he gets to hang out with his friends, talk about and drink beer.

What are your favorite things to do as a family in the winter?
Winter has been hard, having such a wide age range of kids. It is starting to get easier to be out for longer periods of time. There was a time where I felt like all I was doing was helping kids get in and out of winter gear and there wasn’t really a lot of outside playing. I wish I could say we were more adventurous and went skiing or snowboarding but we have not tackled that yet. Simple things like making snow forts and going sledding is fun for everyone right now!
Best birthday party spot? This year, we had our 11 year old’s party at Fargo Pinball! It was amazing for both the kids and parents.
Do you have any other fun family tips?
What is a local family friendly event you look forward to?
We were just at the Kiwanis Pancake Feed at the Fargodome. We had not gone for a few years and we were really glad we went. We had a great breakfast and the boys were able to burn some energy in the bounce houses. This was especially welcomed after a tough couple of weeks being stuck inside. Chalkfest is always fun too. There’s so much to do and it’s at the zoo, so we get to see the animals. The Arts Partnership does a great job with this event! And, of course, the Red River Market. It’s fun for everyone, grab some food and a treat, listen to music and just experience the fun things Fargo has to offer downtown!

One of the things that I’m beginning to realize with our boys is how much they enjoy traditions. We may not think that kids pick up on these kinds of things, but our boys really have. Whether it is having movie night on Friday nights, Saturday morning breakfast or the little things that I’ve done in the past during Christmas time, and most recently, over Valentine’s day where we made homemade pizza together. The boys commented on how much fun it was and that we had done it the year before and that we should do it next year. So figuring out what little things you can do as a family that make days special.

Chelsea Burns and her 3-year-old son Ozzie are a fun-loving duo. Chelsea is the Marketing Director at Michael J. Burns Architects, but also enjoying flexing her creative muscle at her design business, Cho.Be Art & Design. To keep the two of them company, they share their home with Margot the Great Dane and Beatrix the Border-Aussie.
What’s one piece of advice you wish you would have received about being a parent?
You know, I think that most people have this “idea” of what kind of parent they are going to be and what kind of life they will have as a family. Some of us more than others. But no matter how much you plan for the future as a parent, things will eventually change. That’s not to say that some things might not work out, but, in all actuality, you might get to a point where you’re sitting open-mouthed wondering how in the heck you even got to where you are. And here’s what I wish people would prepare you for: I wish people would tell you that it’s totally OK if things change. And not in that snarky “oh yeah, I am so sure you’re really gonna use cloth diapers,” way. But in a gentle way that encourages you to be prepared for the fact that you will survive those changes, you just have to be kind to yourself; forgive yourself for not being perfect, for not meeting every expectation. It will happen, and it will be OK. You will move on and you’ll make new plans.
What are some tips for surviving a work/life balance?
Is there really such a thing? We all know we should get 6-8 hours of sleep and eat right and work out. But, I’m single. I work full-time, own a secondary business, and have full parenting rights (plus the three fur-children!) I thank God every day that I have an incredibly flexible job that allows me to do what I need to do, like going to appointments or staying home with a sick kid or making sure I am there for school events. I also make sure I take care of my health/mental health and Ozzie’s, too— it is a major priority for both of us.
What are your favorite things to do as a family in the winter?
I haven’t quite figured this out yet. Having a toddler in the winter is HARD. Having a toddler with an anxiety disorder/sensory processing disorder is even harder. I try to get us out of the house as often as possible - Barnes & Noble is a favorite hot spot, PetSmart to “visit the animals” and get our pets supplies and we have our favorite restaurants. But, I always have to be conscious of where I take Ozzie, a lot of places can be a sensory overload for him, so we are working on it.
How have you seen your parenting change over the years?
Where do you like to shop for kids gear?
As a maker, I support the makers: Free to Be Kids, Wee Rascals, Odarling Clothing Co., Spill the Beans Etc Co, The Wild Bambino, to name some of our favorites. I make most of the décor for his room and spaces and we love when his cousins give him hand me downs for toys!
I mean, I haven’t been a parent long, but I think I was pretty spazzy as a new mom. Especially as a pregnant lady—oh boy—I would like to offer my apology to anyone who was around me then. I am wholeheartedly sorry. I was a real piece of self-righteous work. I had things “pretty figured out” back then. Boy, was I wrong. I just didn’t know. I didn’t know to plan for a NICU baby, or a kid with anxiety or a sensory processing issue. I didn’t know how much I would learn about how your child tells you how they need to be parented. I think I am way more laid back now. And certainly, above all else, I am way more willing to ask for help because, God knows, I can’t do this alone.
What’s your favorite kidfriendly restaurant?
There are a lot of great places in town, but we like, Village Inn, No-Bull, Moe’s, Mandarin Kitchen and GP’s Greek Kitchen.
23
Do you have any other fun family tips?
What are your favorite things to do as a family in the summer?
Be outside, be outside, be outside, be outside! No, but seriously. We have magnetic screens on our patio doors, so if it’s nice enough, everything’s open. The dogs go in and out, Ozzie goes in and out, and I do, too. Ozzie and I started to garden together last year, we aren’t great at it, but it was so fun to learn about things together and see him get so excited when one strawberry would grow (seriously, only one at a time). But we get dirty and dig in the mud and sand. I love to find old sheets at thrift stores and I hang them on the fence, and then we paint them with washable paint. When it rains, they are fresh and we paint again! We make our fun, we don’t have a lake place or anything, and I’ve really come to appreciate how quiet the summer weekends get around here. We get to explore or turn our speakers up super loud in the backyard because all of the neighbors are gone! We also frequent the zoo (that membership pays for itself) and the Red River Market.
Favorite way to get energy (of you and/or your child) out?
Dance parties. We ask Alexa to play us something (not going to lie, I rarely get first choice of music) and we run around the kitchen and family room marching, elephant stomping, crab crawling and ninja jumping. The dogs and cat usually join in the chaos and I hope they don’t stop until I am 90.
What is a local family friendly event you look forward to?
You know, I don’t know if they are necessarily “family-friendly,” but I have made them that way… I have a kid who is really interested in music (so am I). So, we like to go to the Classical Music Festival and FM Symphony Small Music Ensembles. He gets to learn about what he loves. I also love the Viking Festival at the Hjemkomst and love when they do craft markets at the breweries that are family friendly.
Discuss gratefulness, you may be surprised what you find out. We spend time talking about all the things we are thankful for every night. Nothing is off limits. We can be thankful for everything from the food we eat to toenails to “beautiful chairs.” (direct quote from Ozzie, I still don’t know what chairs he was referring to). Also, make your own traditions. We make and snail mail out Valentines Day cards. We celebrate St. Lucia Day by baking lussekatter. We celebrate our pets’ birthdays with pupcakes and decorations. If we can make something special in a way that we can remember, why not?
What are your favorite ways to take care of yourself and take time for yourself?
Volunteering. Which sounds sanctimonious, but in all honesty, it’s a totally selfish thing for me. I know that I have a special set of skills that I can give to the community and that set of skill allows me to connect with actual grownups AND it lets me flex my creative muscles in a way I wouldn’t necessarily do otherwise. I have these wonderful committees of people that I volunteer with that I genuinely love to be around, and they challenge me to think about things from different points of view and to create in those ways. Also on my list: my awesome friends that can make anything fun, staying up too late binging Netflix, DIY projects and making art.

rad is the first to greet us when we walk through the door.
“Hi guys!” he yells from his spot in the kitchen, where he is resting his legs next to his wheelchair. “Am I going to be on TV?!” We laugh. No, this time the story is for a magazine. “Ooooh!” chimes in Lane from the couch, breaking into a wide grin. By this point, Brad, Lane, and
36 | MARCH 2019 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM
their two other roommates David and Greg are used to the attention. Known as “The Guys,” these four became (and maybe were already) local celebrities through the community-wide efforts to build them a new home — a campaign from CCRI (Creative Care for Independence) called Build 4 The Guys. You may have read the initial story in the November issue of Fargo Monthly. Since then, the story has been spread through various media outlets and word of mouth across the community, making for a campaign whose results
have astounded the CCRI team, according to CCRI Development Associate Anna Larson. “We did not expect the fundraising to be this close to done by now,” Anna said, looking around at the new house. The CCRI leadership team learned in the spring of 2018 that the four guys, who have lived together for over 10 years, were facing some challenges in their old house. Brad, who has arthritis and neuropathy in his knees, was finding it increasingly difficult to navigate the tight corners and small kitchen in his wheelchair. David is losing his range of motion as he grows older and was having trouble accessing his bedroom in the basement. Both Brad and David regularly requested to take a bath, and yet the downstairs tub was difficult for David to use and impossible for Brad. The CCRI caregivers knew that these four were like brothers. Lane, the selfproclaimed leader of the house, calls them “my boys.” He and David have been friends since they were kids,
and all four of them have lived as a family for over a decade. For CCRI, the idea of separating any of them was unthinkable. Unfortunately, a new house for the four guys was not in the budget. They knew they would have to depend on a community-wide effort to make it possible. Thus, the #Build4TheGuys campaign was launched. And the community response was incredible, Anna said. “We needed $347,000 to make it happen, and now we have just under $100,000 to go,” Anna said, shaking her head with a smile. “We set some lofty goals, and the community showed up.” Local media ran stories introducing the guys, and sharing their need for a new home. New donors from Texas, Virginia and all across the nation started following the story and donating to the campaign. News stations that Anna hadn’t even reached out to showed up to cover the story. “It was amazing,” Anna said, laughing.
Meanwhile, the CCRI caregivers began preparing “The Guys” for the big change. The thought of leaving their familiar home was hard; but with time, they understood that this was the best way to keep their family together — and add a lot of fun surprises, too. As construction of the new house began, CCRI caregivers drove the guys by the new build to check on the progress. Day by day they watched as the frame went up, then the walls, the roof, the windows and doors. And day by day, the word spread that this was no ordinary home. As the crew behind the build learned that this was a house for CCRI, for four very special guys, many of them began offering discounted work and in-kind donations. Cross Insulation heard the story and offered in-kind insulation for the whole house. Fabricators Unlimited made an in-kind donation for the Corian countertops, sinks, and cabinet pulls for the whole house. ABC Supply Company, Ace Hardware, Cabinets Unlimited, Carpet Garage, Custom 37
Design Plumbing, Diamond Vogel, Drywall Supply, Furniture for Less, Hohenstein Homes, Innovative Air, J&L Shelving, Lacho Drywall, Rigels, Sign Pro and YHR are just a few other companies that lent their own specific talents and resources as inkind donations to make the guys’ house possible. When the house was nearly done, CCRI volunteer Angie Koenig offered to use her passion for interior design to decorate. She shopped for months to find special offers, and over the course of a weekend, she filled the home with planters, vases, art pieces, baskets, rugs, and signs like “Home Sweet Home.” She also decked out David’s art room with some of his favorite art supplies; a string of buckets filled with markers, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, and crayons. Already, the shelves are filled with David’s popsicle stick houses and original paintings. Each of the guys got their own customized room as a surprise. Brad, a lifelong Vikings fan, got a purple room with a Vikings bedspread that says “Skol” in big white letters, and team decor on the walls. David has a brightly colored room, with vinyl on the walls of a rainbow and a bicycle — one of his favorite things to draw. Greg requested a

where Lane goes to get a Diet Mountain Dew on the regular, showed up as well with a gift card for each of the roommates.
Needless to say, when the guys visited their home for the first time, they couldn’t stop smiling.
The first thing you see in the guys’ home is a collage on the wall: the letters L, G, B, D, surrounded by photos of the four guys with each other, with CCRI caregivers and other favorite memories. The wooden floors are heated, and there’s plenty of space for Brad to move around in his wheelchair. The living room is surrounded by comfy couches and armchairs; you might see Lane and Greg watching Power Rangers or some of their other favorite movies. There are two bathrooms; one with a walk-in shower for easy access, and the other with the highly-anticipated easy-access bathtub. According to the CCRI caregivers there, Brad
“I love it,” Lane said. “We have a huge kitchen. I have a Batcave. I’m here with my three boys.” Despite temperatures plummeting below zero with blizzard conditions to boot, friends, family and neighbors from across the community showed up to celebrate at their first open house event. Lane’s friends from his favorite Taco John’s showed up with free tacos for everyone. Other friends from the nearby Holiday gas station,

and David have been taking baths nearly once a day. In fact, in the middle of a tour of the house, we hear a giddy yell from Brad — “I’m going for my bath!” — as he wheels his way towards the bathroom, a wide grin across his face. In the kitchen, a memento from their old home hangs above the sink — a wooden sign that reads: “What I love most about my home is who I share it with.” Thanks to the community, that is one thing that won’t ever change. For the four friends, this is their new forever home. “This new home is a testament to where we live. The community truly comes together when something needs to be done,” Anna said. “It’s an amazing place to be.” For the guys, what’s important is that they’re together. “We’re family,” says Brad. “And family stays together.” 39

Finding the Time With Family
I
BY Patrick Metzger, Synergy Strength and Nutrition
can’t find the time… This is by far the most common answer I receive from potential clients when asking what their biggest obstacle is in the way of their success. In all honesty, it can seem difficult to organize time and find the motivation to exercise, make healthy meal planning a priority and take time for oneself. With a strong plan and the implementation of some effective habits and routines to save and maximize time, however, it’s actually easier than you think. For my wife, Carissa, and I, things were pretty easy for the first ten years of our marriage when it came to workouts, healthy meals and taking time to relax. Upon adopting our daughter, Zahra, life was turned upside down a bit. Even though our days are now filled with nuclear fallout diapers and Alexa being constantly bombarded to play “Baby Shark” and “The Gummy Bear Song” yet again, we’ve found methods that work for us to prioritize staying healthy and energized.
Prioritizing Workouts One of the trickiest pieces of the puzzle and balancing act is planning workouts. As would be expected, this was no problem before our daughter was placed with us. It’s now taken some careful planning and time tradeoffs, nevertheless, for each of us to prioritize gym time. We’ve swapped a bit of free time in the evenings by heading to bed earlier in exchange for getting in morning workouts. Carissa heads to the gym on weekdays at 5:05 a.m., and I go around 6:10 a.m. as soon as she returns and we’re able to trade roles. This was a big change for us initially, and we almost scrapped the plan after six weeks, but we decided to commit to it and stuck with it. Being accustomed to the early mornings now, neither of us could imagine it any differently, due to the elevated energy and efficiency it provides throughout the day. Meal Planning & Prep We’ve managed to break down weekly meal planning, a keystone habit for us, into a weekly 10-minute task. Before heading to the grocery store and our favorite, Costco, we take a look at our calendars to see exactly what’s going on for the next week. Who is going where what day? What do we have time for in the evenings? That determines how many and the types of meals to prep. From there, we list out what we’d like to make for the week, taking into account on-hand items and plugging those meals into the days where they fit best for time allowed and planned leftovers. Also, we’re sure to prep as many items as possible at once, planning for needed meal items later in the week. For example, if we need hamburger fried and vegetables chopped for a planned meal on Thursday, we’ll take care of those where time allows while prepping a meal earlier in the week. We rarely run out of meal ideas because we’ve created a master list that hangs in our cupboard of over one-hundred meals and sides that we’re constantly adding to. Once we’ve planned the week, we create our list of exactly what we need for those exact meals, keeping the grocery runs short, cost-effective and efficient.
Coordinate Calendars & Lists With having a two-year-old daughter and myself scheduling online calls, client meetings and on-site visits, it’s vital for each of us to know where the other is and what’s going on. There are numerous shared calendar and list sharing apps available out there to help get you and your significant other on the same page, but we’ve personally found success by just sharing our Google and work calendars. If you want, you can even go as far as plugging meals into the calendar for each day. As with anything, communication upfront saves an enormous amount of time in the end. Self-Development & Growth This is one area where we’ve really made great strides and have seen positive results in the last few years. Our evenings that were once filled with binge-watching yet another season of “Breaking Bad” or “Sons of Anarchy” are now frequently spent with each of us reading a selfdevelopment book with the TV on in the background. Don’t get me wrong, we still make time for some Netflix or a movie now and then, but we’ve never gotten into deeper discussions or had a closer relationship since putting a stronger focus on ourselves, self-growth and more purpose-driven intentions. In the end, a bit of planning, organization and communication has made us much more highly efficient, allowing us to squeeze more life and living out of our days. What’s made us most successful is sticking to the habits we’ve created. Just like anybody else, though, we fail to plan once in a while and things don’t work out perfectly. Those are the days and weeks where our rhythm is thrown off and things can quickly become a hot mess. We’re always sure, however, to quickly get back on track as soon as possible by getting back to the basics. It will take some experimentation in finding what works best for you and your family, but by focusing on being more solutionoriented, developing regular habits and getting clear on your intentions you’ll make progress toward your health goals and living your life with more balance and fulfillment.
WEST FARGO WELCOMES
DreamBox Learning Adaptive Math Program, DreamBox, Enriches West Fargo Public School Classrooms

urn back the clock in your mind and place yourself in elementary school math class. Recall the flashcards and the memorization of multiplication tables. Think about stepping into the dreaded timed tests where you spit out every equation answer you’d so carefully memorized the night before with your parents testing you and crafting up ways for you to remember all the formulas. Now fast forward to 2019. Thanks to the DreamBox Learning program, math
classes at West Fargo Public Schools don’t look like this anymore. In 2016, West Fargo Public Schools introduced DreamBox to their Welcome Center—a special K–5 learning environment designed to help students new to the country with little or no English language skills. After success at the Welcome Center, DreamBox is now a part of all 13 of the district’s elementary schools. DreamBox is an online sK-8 math program, but it is not
your typical math app. Within the program, a student enters a learning environment where they are welcomed into different activity areas and where they get to add customization with their own avatar and background music and then work to earn coins, badges and certificates. West Fargo Public School District’s elementary math and science coordinator, Jill Leier, shared, “When students are working in DreamBox, the math that they are doing is all building the facility for them to use mental strategies.” Within
the program, DreamBox’s virtual guide, Stella, walks students through visuals and how to approach math problems, but without a pencil and paper in hand. Leier noted that the program works to build mental math rather than procedural math, allowing the students to rely on what they know, rather than relying on pencil and paper right away. DreamBox is designed to work with students, providing them a fun environment to learn in. Alongside the fun, the program collects data points and works with each student

to ensure they are not getting too far ahead of their Zone of Proximal Development, which Leier describes as the line between when something is hard and challenging, but not so hard that the student gets frustrated and gives up. “One of the things that is so powerful about DreamBox is that in every DreamBox lesson, the software program itself gathers important data points on the student during the lesson,” said Leier, “It will gather data points on how many clicks the student uses (how they ask for help), how long they take to respond and how quickly they take to respond correctly or incorrectly.” Using these data points, the program adjusts so that it’s just on the cutting edge of the students learning. There is a wide range of students with differing learning styles and ability levels in every classroom. While some students are further along, there are others who need more reinforcing. Leier

painted the picture as being able to maximize time with each student, “If you have five students at your table receiving more reinforcement, you may have 20 students that now are working independently. We wanted to maximize the time that those students were not face-to-face with a teacher. Now, we can have many of those students doing DreamBox and having personalized learning and they’re growing and gaining math skills. If we didn’t have that, the students might not be as engaged in the math they are doing independently.” West Fargo Public Schools has over 900 English Language Learners (ELLs) and there are over 50 different languages spoken by students enrolled across the district. Thanks to adaptive programs such as DreamBox, these students from all different backgrounds can learn at a pace that’s best for them and can build confidence in their abilities.
“One of the things that is so powerful about DreamBox is that in every DreamBox lesson, the software program itself gathers important data points on the student during the lesson.”

here’s nothing better than days filled with brilliant sunshine, birds singing and trees showing early bloom. Spring is a favorite time of year for many families. It means warmer weather, spring break, bulky clothes begone, outdoor fun and lake season right around the corner. On any given spring evening, young adults, families and people of all ages are on the streets in apparent comfort for their safety — walking dogs, pushing strollers, shopping and dining at restaurants’ patio tables. Bird of Passage A Journey From Iran To The United States Of America BY Mohsen Tahmasebi Nasab, Doctoral Candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering
On any given day, you can often find Mohsen and Alex sharing an authentic Iranian meal at their favorite spot: Saffron Bistro
Adventurous Readers, March is a special month for me because on the 21st day it is the equinox, the first day of spring and Nowruz (Persian New Year) But foremost, it is my "Thank You Mom For Bringing Me to Earth Day" aka the day I celebrate motherhood because 29 springs ago, my royal and honorable mom gave birth to her son: Alexandre Cyusa. This month I would love to introduce to you a dear friend: Mohsen Tahmasebi Nasab from Iran. I was fortunate to have met him during a workshop at NDSU in the Fall 2016. Right away I was amazed by his assiduity in world cultures and his worldwide traveling experiences. He combines with poise passion for literature, philosophy, and science. He is a doctoral candidate in Civil Engineering-Water Resources Engineering at NDSU. I once read that the third world war was going to be fought over access to water... and the future Dr Mohsen Tahmasebi Nasab is putting all his heart and soul into finding sustainable water management techniques to avoid such a fatal human catastrophe. Mohsen has lived in many countries and in any conversations you have with him he will make you travel with his numerous enchanting tales of his personal exploring adventures. The world is smaller and a better place because of noble people like Mohsen. He is a true agent of change, making any community he temporarily calls home better, one meaningful conversation at a time. Fargo is fortunate to have such a benevolent Iranian representing Persian values of hospitality, sense of community and extreme generosity. Until our snowy paths cross again, Namaste! Alexandre Cyusa

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL
I have had the privilege of learning from a diverse group of researchers from around the world. My job as a graduate researcher and a hydrologic modeler (essentially someone who interprets the water cycle processes by using mathematical equations and computer simulations) at NDSU is to simulate the changes in water resources as a result of many other factors such as agricultural activities, global warming and climate change. The scientific community that I am interacting with is a classic example of how diversity of thought leads to sustainable solutions. No matter where you are from or what language you speak, scholars from around the world are collaborating and doing research to provide sustainable solutions to complex global water issues. At the end of the day, two heads are better than one!
B
“
ird of passage” refers to people who stay in a place for a short time before leaving to another place. Throughout my life, I have certainly felt like a bird of passage: looking forward to new adventures, freespirited and unattached. Because of my father’s job, we used to move from one city to another every three to four years. We lived in cities such as Shiraz, Yazd and Tehran in Iran; Moscow in Russia; and I have been living in Fargo for more than three years. When I was a kid, it was not easy to deal with leaving and saying goodbye to all those friends that I had been making for four years. However, these constant movements provided me with a golden opportunity that I cherish every single day of my life: making new friends quickly and appreciating friendships while I have the chance. I learned to embrace different forms of diversity in various aspects of my personal and professional life. My journey in Fargo began in 2015 when
I started my doctoral degree at North Dakota State University (NDSU). Although I did not have any relatives or even a single friend in the United States, I was geared up for making lots of friends. To me, the most straightforward approach to form a diverse group of friends is asking questions. It is like learning a new language; as you learn more, you are even more interested. Sarcastically, one of the perks of being from Iran is that my country has a consistent presence on the media! This means that people have questions and are looking for first-hand experiences. I have been asked various questions about the climate, people, culture, history, politics, literature and many other topics related to my country. While I might not have all the answers, I am happy to share my perspective and experiences. This is an opportunity to foster meaningful dialogue by showing curiosity and respect for other opinions, traditions and cultures.
Here in Fargo, I am proud to be the first Persian/Iranian friend of many people who never thought that they might have a friend from Iran. Fargo gave me the warmest welcome in the coldest days of its winters by introducing me to extraordinary people from a variety of countries. As an idealist and an optimist, my personal and professional goals are to play a small role in promoting cultural diversity and diversity of thought. Interacting with people from different backgrounds has taught me that compassion is the cornerstone of many cultures. As a Persian, I would like to leave you with a beautiful piece of poetry from my culture that I have been raised with. The Persian master of speech, Saadi of Shiraz (1213-1291), eloquently tells us that we are all one: “Human beings are members of a whole In creation of one essence and soul If one member is afflicted with pain Other members uneasy will remain If you have no sympathy for human pain The name of human you cannot retain.”

Having opened in West Fargo in December, MacKenzie River is a newcomer to the Red River Valley's food and drink scene. On the food side, you can expect a variety of American fare, including pizza, pasta, burgers and fries. The wet portion of MacKenzie River mixes classic favorites with some new twists. An exciting feature to note is their bar's frost rail that allows drinks resting on the bar to remain cold- yum! Bartender Victoria Hubbard told us all about their bar, including this huckleberry favorite on their cocktail menu.

Q&A JOURNEY TO BARTENDING
I am Victoria and I’m the bar manager at MacKenzie River. I’ve been with the company here in Fargo since we opened this location in December. I have almost 10 years of bar experience, I’ve managed a couple other places out of state. I was at another restaurant in town for three years, then this opportunity opened up and I jumped at it. So here I am, I love it.
ABOUT THE BARTENDING EXPERIENCE AT MACKENZIE RIVER
We have our own set recipes, because we are a corporate company. So we’re very consistent in that the drinks needs to be made the same way here as it they are at the other locations. Me being the bar manager, I kind of drill that into my bartenders. This is the first corporate company I’ve worked for so it has taken a little getting used to, but I’m having fun.
MOST POPULAR DRINKS AMONGST THE REGULARS
The Huckleberry Mojito and the Huckleberry Lemon Drop are two very popular ones. We also do a blood orange whiskey sour that’s pretty popular. Then we have the Smoked Old Fashioned, which is a really fun one to make. It has a really nice summer campfire smell when you light it up, so everybody at the bar smells it and sees it and then we’ve got like 30 people coming back to the bar for one! Plus we use a cherry wood chip in it, so it gives it that really sweet smoke smell.
ABOUT THIS DRINK
Our Huckleberry Lemon Drop has your Huckleberry vodka, mixed with a citron vodka, a little bit of lemonade and some simple syrup. You squeeze two lemons into the shaker tin first and then you put huckleberries in the shaker tin with the vodkas. When we garnish it we put a small scoop of huckleberries at the bottom and then strain the drink in there. It’s actually really sweet for having that huckleberry that is very tart. The huckleberry drinks do well because we are a Montana-based company and the huckleberry is big in Montana. So we have a lot of people that come in for the huckleberry drinks. There aren’t a lot of bars here that carry the huckleberry vodka that we carry, and if they do, they don’t have the actual fresh huckleberries like we do.

Tell us a bit about yourself Hello! I am an painter, illustrator and architect living in Minneapolis, MN. Before moving to Minneapolis two years ago I lived in Fargo-Moorhead for 12 years. In my free time I love creating art and exploring Minnesota with my husband Grant and our dog Morgan. Describe your handmade business My paintings are acrylic paint with a paint pen for outlines and accents. The prints I create are often high resolution images of my paintings but sometimes they are illustrations made with pens and Prisma color markers. In addition to my paintings and prints I am also passionate about street art. I have illustrations on electrical boxes in Moorhead and Minneapolis, and in 2016 I completed a mural on Junkyard Brewery in Moorhead.
What is one of your most favorite items you have made? I really love my series of small 6”x6” paintings; they are so much fun to create and can sometimes lead to great ideas for larger paintings. Tell us more about what you did for the Unglued Craft Fest For this year’s Unglued Craft Fest I decided to focus on my floral art. I had small floral paintings and a variety of floral prints. I wanted my booth to feel like a boutique floral nursery. I love the feeling you get when you walk into a floral nursery and you’re surrounded by beautiful flowers, greenery and cute pots. I really wanted people to have a similar experience at my booth.
What is your favorite flower? That is a really tough decision but hydrangeas are the first flower that comes to mind. I love their color palette and I love how full they can get. What are your most essential tools? My most essential tools are paint and brushes. More specifically I use a lot of white paint, I mix almost all my colors with white. What is a word that best describes you? Idealistic. In my day-to-day life I can definitely be idealistic and I think it comes across in my art. I always strive to have my paintings be reflections of the beauty that I see in the world.
What advice would you have given yourself 5 years ago? Don’t worry about certain “rules” that go along with painting. Just create art you love and, more than likely, there are people that love it too. How can our community support you as an artist and/or your creative business? Continuing to have fun, unique opportunities is a great way to keep artists and the community inspired in art. I really love how much Fargo/Moorhead is embracing murals, public art, craft fests and street fairs. Incorporating art into every day activities is a great way to expose the community to art and give artists more opportunities.

uring the never-ending winter months in the upper Midwest, there isn’t anything that can bring us the happiness and comfort that we need other than a hotdish. Imagine it being the 1930s during The Great Depression, all you have at home is canned vegetables, canned soup, potatoes and limited meat. Might as well throw it all together in a pan, bake it and see what happens. That was the creation of the hotdish. An easy, affordable and sufficient way to feed the whole family for a couple of days. Little did the people who
first started making the hotdish know that that dish would become a regional staple of Minnesota and the Dakotas. What really is a hotdish? There could be many adaptations to what people think goes into a hotdish, but it really comes down to three things. A starch, protein and a vegetable bound together with a creamed soup. Then those ingredients are seasoned and tossed into a serving dish, and almost always topped with a potato product and baked uncovered. There’s nothing pretty going on with hotdish, but if you’re like most Midwesterners, you can find some beauty in that beige and brown pan bubbling in the oven. With the lengthy history and crazy popularity of the hotdish, there have been so many different variations. Whether it’s the famous tater-tot, wild rice or taco hotdish, there's a never-ending list of recipes. Along with all those recipes, there is some confusion. Is a hotdish the same as a casserole? To me, a hotdish is a casserole. There are arguments that a hotdish uses heavier meats like beef and pork, while casseroles use chicken or tuna. Or that casseroles only use stocks and broths instead the creamy canned soup that the hotdishes use. When it comes down to it, they both call for a smörgåsbord of ingredients to be placed into a pan and baked until golden brown. With hotdish being such an integral part of my childhood, it will always be close to my heart. So I will continue to pass it on to more generations so more people can have the same nostalgic feeling while eating something so simple.

A
staggering 40 million vulnerable people around the world are enslaved—1 out 4 of those are kids. Unseen is not ok with that.
Unseen is a local nonprofit that works locally to help globally. Founded in 2011, Unseen's mission is to fight against human trafficking on a global scale. They do this by partnering with organizations on the ground that are ready for growth, but who need that extra hand. Unseen provides these partners with assets to encourage such growth. "There are many excellent organizations fighting slavery; the problem is they often lack time, knowledge and materials to build donor relationships and fundraise effectively," shared Unseen COO Mark Matthes, "That’s where Unseen comes in to accelerate these organizations’ work by providing fundraising training, marketing assets and a support team to help them grow and reach more vulnerable people" Unseen currently serves more than 100,000 kids and families through 37 partner organizations, but they know there are so many more who need freedom. By 2021, Unseen hopes to expand to serve 100 partner organizations. Matthes notes that as more people come alongside Unseen, the organization can help bring hope and freedom to hundreds of thousands more kids, women and families.

"That can’t happen without this wonderful community of support that has been our lifeline for nearly 8 years," said Matthes. "We hope more people will step forward to join Unseen as a donor-investor, a volunteer or a community ambassador and work toward a future where human trafficking is no more." This Giving Hearts Day (February 14), Unseen was able to raise 103% of
their goal for the day, thanks to over 400 donors. Development Operations Coordinator Lauren Hutton noted that there are many organizations on their waiting list that they'd love to help serve, so any growth they see is greatly appreciated and goes directly towards helping more and more people. While fundraising efforts are never completed, the dollars raised on this day will hugely help them reach their goals.
