SWIMMING LESSON DESCRIPTIONS COURSE PARENT AND CHILD

PREREQUISITES

Familiarize children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years  with the water and teach swimming readiness skills  Provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water 

No skill prerequisites Child must be at least 6 months Parents must accompany child in each class

Familiarize children ages 4 and 5 years old to the aquatic environment and help them acquire rudimentary basic aquatic skills Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water

 

No skill prerequisites Children should be approximately 4 years old or older

Successful demonstration of the Preschool Level 1 exit skills assessment

 

No skill prerequisites Participants usually start at about 6 years old

Build on and improve skills learned in Preschool Level 1 Increase knowledge of water safety topics introduced in Preschool Level 1 Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills Help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water

Build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1

Successful demonstration of the Learn to Swim—Level 1 exit skills assessment

Build on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency in a pool environment

Successful demonstration of the Learn to Swim—Level 2 exit skills assessment

Improve participant’s proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Level 3

Successful demonstration of the Learn to Swim—Level 3 exit skills assessment

Payment must be made in person at the pool. Due to the high demand for swim lessons, we cannot guarantee that there will be space available at walk in registration.

Messy Munchkins Location: Mary Siah Recreation Center Art Room Fee: $5 per class Messy Munchkins encourages your little one to emerge and explore the process of making art, with little concentration on the finished piece. Little ones will create art with paint, textured objects, and unconventional materials. They will also discover and play with sand, dirt, water, play dough, and more. This class focuses on fostering creativity and sensory play, and not worrying about cleaning up! Different activities each session. Dress for the mess! Parent or guardian must accompany child. Halloween Spooky Trail

New Program!

Location: Tanana Lakes Recreation Area Fee: FREE Join a host of friendly ghosts for a trail walk beside the lake. This Spooky Trail is a short Halloween hike appropriate for all ages. The first 100 kids will receive a free glow stick. Bring a flashlight. Candy and warm beverages provided. Participants are encouraged to come in costume. This is a free event. All ages welcome. Summer Trails Challenge Awards Location: Tanana Lakes Recreation Area Picnic Pavilion Fee: FREE Explore the Tanana Lakes Trails with your family or friends, play a special scavenger hunt game along the trails, roast marshmallows and learn about other local trail opportunities. These will be self-guided activities, so you can participate on your own schedule. Come by and pick up your Summer Trailblazer Award if you completed the Summer Trails Challenge! Halloween Trick or Treat Town 2018 Saturday, October 27th

Fairbanks Halloween Trick or Treat Town is an event that transforms 40 acres of the historical Pioneer Park, Fairbanks into a whimsical, family friendly 'spook' tacular town. Fun for all ages! There will be trick or treating, free train rides around the park on our steam engine, entertainment in the Centennial Center for the Arts, a photo booth, face painting, balloon animals, carnival games, costume contests, food trucks, haunted house, and visits from some of our most loved characters during the day. Admission: $5 advance, $8 at the door. Proceeds will benefit Access Alaska, Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association and the FNSB Pioneer Park Playground Fund. Tickets on sale starting October 1st.

BIG DIPPER ICE ARENA Ice Skate Rental only $3!

Find the latest walking and skating schedule on our website! The Big Dipper Ice Arena is owned and operated by the Fairbanks North Star Borough for the benefit of all its residents and visitors. Once an airplane hangar in Tanacross, the structure was reassembled and repurposed as an ice arena in Fairbanks in 1968. Commonly referred to as "The Dipper," the facility hosts public skating, youth and adult hockey, and is home of the Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League. A walking and jogging track is free to the public during scheduled hours. Most areas of the facility, including the ice, are available for private rentals and special events.

PARK AMENITIES

Camping: Chena Lake Recreation area has two campgrounds; one at the Lake Park and one at the River Park. Each campground has two camping loops and a combined total of 80 campsites (some pull through) and potable water and restroom facilities. Our island has an additional 6 tent camping sites, which can only be accessible by non-motorized boat.

Fishing: Chena Lake is stocked annually by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game with Rainbow Trout, Silver Salmon, and Arctic Char. The Chena River has Arctic Grayling, Northern Pike, Whitefish, Burbot and an annual run of King Salmon.

There are plenty of serene and peaceful picnic sites throughout the park. Most sites have a picnic table and permanent grill or fire ring. There are two sandy swim beaches, with picnic tables and two volleyball courts.

3. SECRET TRAIL Skyline Ridge Park Difficulty: MODERATE

Get there: From Farmer’s Loop Road, take Summit Drive to Cranberry Ridge, or Skyline Drive to the top of Crestline Drive. Follow Cranberry Ridge uphill to Noel Drive. Public access to the park is at the Skyline Ridge trailhead at the top corner of Noel Drive and M.I.A. Street. Parking is limited. Distance: Approximately 1.5 miles one way. This is a non-motorized trail.

Iceberg Rec Area Difficulty: MODERATE

Get there: Parking for this trailhead and the Isberg Recreation Area is located off Oboe Court near the intersection of Isberg and Cripple Creek Roads. Distance: From the parking lot, take the powerline trail about 0.9mi to the east. Check out the trail north of the powerline. Rubber boots recommended! This is a multiple-use trail.

2. MIKE AGBABA BIKE PATH

Get there: Parking for this trail is available near the South Cushman park entrance, at the Picnic Pavilion off Northlake Lane or in the motorized boat launch parking lot. This is a non-motorized trail. Distance: Trail for an approximate 2 mile loop around the lake. This is a non-motorized trail. The Eagle Trail Loop combines Flicker Trail, Sandpiper Trail and Eagle

5. EQUINOX MARATHON TRAIL

Chena Lake Rec Area Difficulty: EASY

Get there: From the Chena Lake Rec Area road, turn Left onto the Lake Park Road. Trailhead is located near the East Lake parking lot (the first pullout on your right). Distance: The Mike Agbaba Bike Path can be accessed by taking the 0.9km trail from the parking lot to access the 4.9km loop. Non-motorized from April 1st-October 30th.

Ester Dome Road Difficulty: DIFFICULT

Get there: Travel up Ester Dome Road about 1 mile past the St. Patrick’s Road intersection. Parking is on the left at the Happy Valley Singletrack trails. Walk down Ester Dome Road and look for the Equinox sign on the north (left/uphill) side of the road. This is a notoriously tough uphill section of the Equinox Marathon that takes runners around Ester Dome Road to Henderson Road. Distance: Approximately 3 miles roundtrip. This is a non-motorized trail.
