On behalf of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department, I am pleased to present the 2019 Fall Edition of the Parks and Recreation Activity Guide! As always, we strive to offer programs, facilities, and services to our community that can meet their recreational needs and enrich their leisure time. As you flip through these 48 pages packed with things to do in Fairbanks this fall, I hope that you will find something that interests you, your friends, and your family as we have worked hard to provide something for everyone. Although the days are getting shorter, there’s no shortage of things to do in the community this fall. Whether you sign up for Learn to Swim Lessons, hike to complete the Fairbanks Trails Challenge, enjoy a special event at Pioneer Park, bike ride at one of the recreation areas, join the Adaptive or Senior Recreation Programs, or just dive into the pool, I encourage you to stay active.

Bryce Ward

Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor

This is, by far, my favorite time of year as we gear up for our biggest community event, Halloween Trick or Treat Town. Halloween Trick or Treat Town - Saturday, October 26th - is the most spooktacular event of the year with trick or treating, free train rides, entertainment, face painting, games, costume contests, food trucks and more. Each year, there are more than 20 local businesses and organizations who volunteer their time and resources to help make this event a success. Our staff have some fun surprises planned for this year's event - stay tuned to find out more! All of the event proceeds benefit the FNSB Pioneer Park Playground Fund, Access Alaska and The Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association. Last year you helped raised over $30,000!

A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

MAYOR'S WELCOME

As Mayor, I am committed to creating a community with opportunities every resident can enjoy. If there is anything you would like to see in future issues of our Activity Guide, or if you have a program idea, please email parks@fnsb.us and tell us about it! Finally, I want to end by expressing my appreciation and thanks to the people who work hard behind the scenes to make what we do as a department possible, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Staff.

GO SKATEBOARDING DAY Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation, Fairbanks Skatepark Coalition Raise Money for New Skatepark On Friday, June 21st, 2019, more than 150 local skaters and community members gathered at John Weaver Memorial Skatepark at Growden Park to celebrate the worldwide event, Go Skateboarding Day.

parks.fnsb.us | (907) 459-1070

The 2019 Go Skateboarding Day event in Fairbanks captured the culture of skateboarding in the community through trick competitions, free lessons, demos from local skaters, giveaways, food trucks, music from Tony Taylor, a skateboard deck art competition and much more. The event was hosted by the FNSB Parks and Recreation Department alongside the Fairbanks Skatepark Coalition and was sponsored by Spirit of Alaska Federal Credit Union. With the aging existing infrastructure, the Fairbanks Skatepark Coalition was formed to bring the local interest and expertise together and build momentum for a community-supported skatepark renovation project. The Go Skateboarding Day event helped fund raise money to support efforts to renovate and expand the existing skatepark. The group’s goal is to build a familyfriendly, skatepark destination that is

designed by skaters, for skaters. A new facility will not only reduce maintenance needs and increase safety, but will be a place for skaters, riders, scooters, and parkenthusiasts to come and play! The current skatepark has not been renovated since its installment in 1997 by the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Renovations are to be completed in coming years. Stay tuned for community meeting dates, project updates, skatepark concept designs and additional fundraising events. John Weaver Memorial Skatepark is free and open to the public. The skatepark has a quarter pipe, a pyramid, a flat bar, a wall ride, and a long metal edged double sided curb. If you would like to support the Fairbanks Skatepark Coalition and donate to the renovation project, please visit: www.nscfundalaska.org/FSC.

LEAVE NO TRACE FEATURED STORIES

Borough Parks and Recreation Department to Provide Education to Fairbanks Community to Encourage Better Outdoor Behaviors You may have heard or seen the phrase "Leave No Trace," but what does it exactly mean? Leave No Trace is the best practice outdoor users should follow to enjoy and protect our natural areas. With more than 350,000 visitors per year to the borough's five recreation areas, and more than 850 miles of trails located in the borough, our love for the outdoors can make quite an impact! In June, two Parks and Recreation staff took a five-day course in the White Mountains National Recreation Area backcountry. This course provided participants with an in-depth understanding of minimum impact practices and prepared them to be the best possible teachers of Leave No Trace. Borough staff intend to use their training to provide education to encourage better outdoor behaviors of those in the Fairbanks area. In the borough, frontcountry areas THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES are often more impacted than 1. Plan ahead and prepare. backcountry areas. 2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces. Outdoor areas used by day-use visitors, 3. Dispose of waste properly. like hikers, dog 4. Leave what you find. walkers, picnickers 5. Minimize campfire impacts. and paddlers, suffer 6. Respect wildlife. from litter, trail 7. Be considerate of other visitors. erosion, habituated wildlife, contaminated water sources and more. Most of the time, users don't intend to create negative impacts in natural areas. However, sometimes the knowledge to preserve it is lacked. The seven principles of Leave No Trace highlight things you should do to enjoy the outdoors responsibly. For example, walking on an established trail to prevent additional vegetation damage, packing out trash and human waste, and maintaining a safe distance from wildlife are all components of Leave No Trace that help take care of the recreational resources that we all cherish. Cleaner water, fewer negative encounters with wildlife, less fire damage and loss of historic artifacts are just a few of the benefits of adhering to Leave No Trace. To kick off the campaign of Leave No Trace in the Fairbanks community, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a "Become a Trail Ninja: Leave No Trace and Outdoor Ethics on the Trails" program on Saturday, October 5th at 1PM at the Tanana Lakes Recreation Area Picnic Pavilion. At this hour long workshop, you'll pick up some skills that will help you navigate and enjoy our local outdoor areas while respecting other trail users, wildlife, and the natural spaces you love to visit. No preregistration is required for this program. Remember: the idea behind Leave No Trace is simple – leave the places you enjoy as good or better than you found them. Next time, before you head outdoors, try to embrace the seven practices and enjoy the outdoors responsibly!

PLAY

PASSPORT

Kids who earned 18 stamps were entered in a drawing to win a Parks and Rec Youth Superpass Membership (a $320 value). More than 150 kids completed at least 10 of the activities. Slater Jones was this year’s lucky Play Passport winner. Slater played his way to free ice skating and swimming at borough facilities for an entire year! Thank you to everyone who participated in the Play Passport program. We're launching this program again next year with even more fun ways to play your way through summer in Fairbanks.

Parks & Rec Play Passport Was A Great ‘Summer Bucket List For Parents’ WRITTEN BY LAUREN ECK

Kids had no reason to say there was nothing to do this summer thanks to the new Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department’s Play Passport program. Throughout the summer, more than 300 kids participated in the program by completing fun activities and earning stamps in their Play Passport. Some of the activities included: building a sandcastle at the lake, riding the train at Pioneer Park, bike riding along the Chena Lake Bike Path and visiting the library. The free program was launched to encourage children to play more and explore all the Fairbanks North Star Borough has to offer in the summertime. At the end of the program, passports were redeemed for prizes. Kids who earned at least 10 stamps in their passport received a fun color changing cup, sunglasses, candy and free ice skating, swimming and train ride coupons.

SWIMMING LESSONS AQUATICS

FNSB Parks and Recreation teaches American Red Cross lessons. American Red Cross offers a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate swimming and water safety program that teaches you, your child or other family members how to swim skillfully and safely, and think and act safely in, on and around the water. The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of skills from the preceding level, except for Level 1, which has no prerequisites. Lessons are organized by level, date and location.

Sign up for swim lessons at parks.fnsb.us! Create your free online account BEFORE registering your child for swim lessons to ensure you have the best chance of getting your child into the class you prefer. Registration opens on the date and time listed below. Classes are open until filled, but will close after the first day of class.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

OUTDOOR RECREATION TRAILS OFFICE

TRAILS ADVISORY COMMISSION

The Trails Office is responsible for implementing the Comprehensive Recreational Trail Plan (Trail Plan), working closely with other Borough Departments and the Trails Advisory Commission. The Trail Plan is part of the Borough's Regional Comprehensive Plan and was created in 1985. The Trail Plan identifies many trails throughout the Borough that have high recreational value for the community and deserve some level of protection for public access. Trails in the Trail Plan cross many types of property and have varying degrees of public access. Public access is not guaranteed across all sections of trails in the Trail Plan. Trails in the Trail Plan receive protection across a piece a property if and when that property is ever subdivided via the Borough's Code of Ordinances, Title 17 "Subdivisions." Over the years, several new trails have been added to the Trail Plan. The latest trail, the Cranberry Trail, was added in 2006. Fairbanks residents can nominate new and existing trails to be added to the Trail Plan by making recommendations to the Trails Coordinator and the Trails Advisory Commission.

The Trails Advisory Commission (TAC) was established by Borough Ordinance in May of 1980. The responsibilities and duties of the Commission are to: inventory and review current trails and make recommendations concerning present and future needs, review state and borough land disposals in regard to trail needs and trail routing, provide a forum for citizen input in trail assessments and needs, review and recommend adjustments needed in the Comprehensive Recreational Trails Plan, and encourage voluntary incorporation of trails where needed in subdivision plans. The Commission is comprised of 15 borough atlarge residents who are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Borough Assembly. Applications are available on line and through the Mayor’s office and the Parks and Rec office. The Commission is required to meet quarterly, but generally meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Times, places and agendas are included in public notices and also on the Borough web site.

If you are interested in the Trail Plan, nominating a new trail, providing or securing a trail easement, or have other trailrelated interests, contact the Trails Coordinator: Bryant Wright, (907) 459-7401, bwright@fnsb.us

OUTDOOR RECREATION

We invite you to join us for some trail work at the trails at Skyline Ridge Park. Work will consist of installing new trail wayfinding signs, clearing brush, and refinishing and resurfacing sections of trail. This will be a fun short work day, 10am-2pm, with snacks and some SWAG sponsored by REI. This project is supported by the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department, REI Fairbanks, the Interior Alaska Trails and Parks Foundation, and Alaska Trails. Alaska Trails will provide extra tools and safety gear. Signs and materials are donated by the Interior Alaska Trails and Parks Foundation, courtesy of an REI "Loving our Local Outdoors" grant. Fairbanks North Star Borough will provide staff and equipment. So come out and celebrate National Public Lands Day and feel good lending a hand to keep your local trails in tip-top shape! You will make a noticeable and permanent improvement to the trails and pick up some trail work skills along the way. Come dressed and prepared for working outdoors in the elements. Sturdy closed-toe shoes, long pants, gloves, and eye protection are required. Skyline Ridge Park is located at the corner of Noel Drive and MIA Drive.
