A message From the Mayor
MAYOR’S WELCOME Welcome to the 2019 winter edition of the Parks and Recreation Activity Guide! As Mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, I’m honored to see the wide variety of healthy and fun opportunities available for the community through our Parks and Recreation Department. From toddler programs and recreation areas, to winter sport triathlons and aquatics—there is something for everyone in this guide. You may have noticed a few things we’re doing differently for Parks and Recreation. To serve you better, we have switched to a new website and user-friendly registration software. With a free account, you can now book and pay for all reservations and programs online. This includes swim lessons, special events, campsites, ice houses, birthday parties and more. Our new website makes finding and registering for programs so much easier. Also, to reduce costs and be more environmentally friendly, the 2019 Winter Activity Guide will continue to be exclusively available online. Printed copies are available at borough pools, libraries and recreation centers for reference. In recent years, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks & Recreation Department has worked to expand not just our public areas, but also its many programs, helping create an inclusive community culture by providing places and programs designed to enrich the quality of life. Have you ever thought of attending a special event at the pool, or bringing your toddler to our Messy Munchkins program? Have you ever wanted to participate in a triathlon, or thought about trying a new winter sport at one of our groomed recreation areas? Our parks and programs offer all this and more. Are you interested in signing your child up for swim lessons or perhaps brushing up on your skills as an adult? I am proud to announce Michelle Leonard, Aquatics Supervisor, with her team of lifeguards and swim instructors were presented with the American Red Cross Gold Level Learn to Swim Provider Awards in October 2018. The aquatics team was recognized as one of the top Learn to Swim Providers in the state and in the Pacific Northwest. The department offers more than 300 toddler, youth and adult swim lessons each year! There is so much to enjoy and experience in our borough. For more information, check out http:// parks.fnsb.us. I truly hope you enjoy each and every event or program in which you choose to participate.

in the HALLOWEEN EVENT RAISES MORE THAN $30,000 FOR COMMUNITY Halloween Trick or Treat Town provides family-fun, does good for the community
NEWS
FAIRBANKS, AK, October 27, 2018 – The Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department and co-sponsoring agency Access Alaska held the 6th annual Halloween Trick or Treat Town on Saturday, October 28th, 2017 from 12PM – 7PM at Pioneer Park. There was trick or treating, free train rides, entertainment, face painting, Jello brain eating contests, Halloween games, costume contests, food trucks, Star Wars characters, a haunted maze put on by Boy Scout Troop 38, and more. An estimated 7,500 people attended the event and over $30,000 was raised to benefit Access Alaska, The Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association, and the FNSB Pioneer Park Playground Fund. With the proceeds, Access Alaska plans to improve existing inclusive programs, and FYSA will use their funds to grow ASAP-Adaptive Soccer for All Players, their program for youth who experience a disability. Pioneer Park will use the funds towards future playground development efforts at the park. This year’s event was funded through local sponsors and community businesses. The FNSB Parks and Recreation Department and Access Alaska would like to say thank you for your generous contributions to the event. A special thank you goes out to the Marine Corps Junior ROTC and the many volunteers that made this year’s event a success.
FNSB PARKS AND REC STAFF AND FACILITIES RECOGNIZED AT ALASKA RECREATION AND PARK ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE
FAIRBANKS, AK, October 25, 2018 – In October, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department hosted the 2018 Alaska Recreation and Park Association (ARPA) Conference and Awards Banquet. Over 80 professionals from around the state gathered for meetings, professional development classes and networking opportunities. Department staff coordinated the event, pulling together sponsors, vendors, education proposals, keynote speakers and more. Many FNSB staff gave educational sessions. Recreation Superintendent, Steve Taylor, gave a highly rated discussion on his adventures and observations on play and leisure in Austria last year. Recreation Specialist, Lauren Eck, presented a rousing class on marketing and social media. Trail Coordinator, Bryant Wright, gave a presentation on his wildly successful Trails Challenge and Project Coordinator, Brian Charlton, had a presentation on park metrics. Pioneer Park Manager, Donnie Hayes, gave two presentations; one on bomb dog training in parks and recreation facilities and one on peaceful leadership. Director, Michael Bork, presented an energizing session about Laughter Yoga in recreation programs and an informative session on creating the perfect elevator speech. The department’s success did not end there though. The department, borough parks and staff received several awards. Among those was Donnie Hayes, current ARPA president, who received the Professional of the Year Award. This is the highest recognition that ARPA can bestow upon a deserving candidate. In addition, Michael Bork received the Bob Robertson Service Award for his volunteer commitment to the association. Pioneer Park was awarded the Facility Excellence Award and The Friends of the Tanana Valley Railroad were presented with the Outstanding Organization Award.

TODDLER Messy Munchkins Location: Mary Siah Recreation Center Art Room Fee: $5 per class
Messy Munchkins encourages your little one(s) to explore the process of making art, with little concentration on the finished piece. Toddlers will create arts and crafts with paint, textured objects, and other conventional and unconventional materials. They will also discover and play with sand, dirt, water, play dough, and more. This class focuses on creativity and sensory play, and not worrying about cleaning up! Different activities each session. Dress for the mess! Sign up for one, two or all three classes this winter/spring. Participants must pre-register at http://parks.fnsb.us. There is a maximum of 15 spaces per class, so be sure to register ahead of time!
