Each year brings new beginnings and I am excited to share with you the first Activity Guide of 2020. Whether you’re looking for ways to spend time with your family and friends, or you’re trying to stay active over the winter months, this guide has what you’re looking for. As we begin the year, I’d like to thank all of those who helped make 2019 another memorable year. Looking back, there was lots of excitement as we hosted a number of great events and activities. From our fun, free summer programs and Halloween Trick or Treat Town fundraiser event, to the launching of our new website and online registration system, to our recent holiday celebrations, it was great to see so many of you out and about in the community enjoying what our staff worked so hard on to provide to you.

Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor

Looking ahead to 2020, there’s lots of recreational programs and events in store. Get outside and explore the trails throughout the Interior this winter while participating in the popular Trails Challenge, enjoy a family-friendly winter festival day at Tanana Lakes Recreation Area during spring break, attend a special themed event at your favorite pool, or take advantage of the many youth, adaptive and senior programs that we offer. Don’t forget to check out all that your Fairbanks Public Libraries have to offer. There are workshops and programs for all ages that can be enjoyed during those blustery days of winter. In partnership with the Noel Wein Library, we are launching a new program “Cook N Book” where books come to life through creative cooking. This program will have young tots (ages 4 to 6) and their parent/guardian joining us at Mary Siah weekly for a fun, hands on cooking class that will revolve around a different children’s book.

HALLOWEEN TOWN Pioneer Park, Access Alaska raise nearly $30,000 during familyfriendly Halloween event On October 26th, 2019, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department, along with cosponsoring agency, Access Alaska, held the eighth annual Halloween Trick or Treat Town event at Pioneer Park. The event, which had an estimated 7,000 attendees, raised almost $30,000. Event admission included trick or treating, train rides, entertainment and live dance performances, face painting, jello

brain, spicy nacho, and hanging donut eating contests, a costume contest, Star Wars characters, face painting, balloon art, DJ Fifty Fifty, games and more. Additional activities included food trucks, a haunted house and a pumpkin chuck. Nearly $30,000 was raised to benefit the FNSB Pioneer Park Playground Fund, Access Alaska, and the Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association. $20,000 has been allotted to a fund pay for expenses incurred by Halloween Town before funds are available through sponsorship and ticket sales. This will allow for Halloween Trick or Treat Town to continue year after year without a significant financial burden held by any of the organizations. The rest of the money raised will be partitioned between various organizations. Access Alaska will use the money for the improvement of existing inclusive programs, the Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association will use it to grow their

Adaptive Soccer for All Players program for youth with disabilities, and the FNSB Parks and Recreation Department will use it for future accessible playground efforts. The Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department and Access Alaska would like to say thank you to Chevrolet Buick GMC of Fairbanks, Kinross Fort Knox, Mt. McKinley Bank, Walmart, iHeart Radio, and Graphic North for their generous contributions to the event. Thank you to the cabin sponsors Aurora Borealis 501st Legion, Kiwanis Club of Fairbanks, Otter Dental, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, National Park Service, College Rotary, Costco, Forgetmenot Service Unit Girl Scouts, Girl Scouts Troop 125, North Star Oral and Facial Surgery, Housing & Homeless Coalition, and AmeriCorp VISTA. A special thank you goes out to the Marine Corps Junior ROTC, the many volunteers and the planning committee that made this year’s event a success.

WINTER LIGHTS WALK New holiday event brings cheer and fun to Downtown Fairbanks The Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department and the Downtown Association of Fairbanks launched a new event this past December, the Winter Lights Walk. Local businesses and organizations sponsored trees along a 1km trail and decorated them to create a winter wonderland for the community to enjoy. The event was held at Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center and along the trail in Griffin Park on Friday, December 6th. The Winter Lights Walk was created not only as a recreational opportunity, but also as a fundraiser for local charities that support those who may need extra support during the holiday season. Those who attended the event voted on the best decorated tree and brought canned food items to donate to the Fairbanks Community Food Bank and/or a new unwrapped toy to donate to local Toys for Tots efforts. The business crowned “best decorated tree” selected a charity of their choice to donate 100% of the event proceeds to. On behalf of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department and the Downtown Association of Fairbanks, a special thank you goes out to all 2019 tree sponsors: Kinney Engineering, Raven Landing, Green Star of Interior Alaska, Stantec, American Society of Landscape Architects, iHeart Radio, Westmark Fairbanks Hotel & Convention Center, the Fairbanks Disc Golf Association, Bettisworth North, and Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitor Center. Thank you for bringing cheer and fun to Griffin Park and Downtown Fairbanks! The tree decorating competition was a nail biter, with a mere six votes separating first and second place. Raven Landing & Green Star of Interior Alaska's tree was voted by the public as the best decorated and chose Santa’s Helpers to donate the $3,569 raised from the event. Congratulations to Raven’s Landing! The American Society of Landscape Architects’ tree was voted second best and rounding out the podium in third place was the Fairbanks Disc Golf Association tree. With the community’s generous support, a trunk full of food was donated to the Fairbanks Community Food Bank and a big box of toys was donated for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. Even with the 20-below-zero temperature on the night of the event, an estimated 800 people came through the doors and explored the trail. Thank you to a generous sponsorship from Foundation Health Partners, who sponsored a meet and greet with reindeer from Running Reindeer Ranch and Elsa and Anna. An additional thank you to the Tanana Chiefs Conference & Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitor’s Center for supporting the Winter Lights Walk. Start planning those tree decorations for next year!

We are both delighted and disheartened to announce that Tiffany Corrigan, Senior and Adaptive Program Coordinator of the Parks & Recreation Department, has retired from her position. She is recognized for her remarkable service to the borough since June 1996. In her position as Senior and Adaptive Program Coordinator, Tiffany was passionate about her job and the people she worked with; she was a truly devoted public servant. Tiffany is an expert in her field and she continually found ways to adapt, develop, and rejuvenate the senior and adaptive recreation programs. This past year, she was recognized as the June borough Employee or the Month and helped secure a $19,000 grant to purchase new sport wheelchairs for the adaptive program. She was always an enthusiastic team player, willing to share both her knowledge and time to assist her fellow co-workers and patrons. Tiffany’s co-workers have expressed their heartfelt appreciation for her perpetual smile and bright wit. She was a joy to work with and they are honored to have had her as a member of the team. She will be missed by coworkers and the community alike. Congratulations to Tiffany on her retirement, and our thanks for a job well done! With Tiffany’s retirement, a new Recreation Coordinator was hired to continue the development and success of the borough’s recreational programs. Please join the Parks and Recreation Department in welcoming and congratulating Nikki Horn as the new Recreation Program Coordinator. She has started in this position as of December 2nd, 2019.

Best wishes Tiffany & Welcome Nikki! 8

OUTDOOR RECREATION

OUTDOOR RECREATION TRAILS OFFICE

TRAILS ADVISORY COMMISSION

The Trails Office is responsible for implementing the Comprehensive Recreational Trail Plan (Trail Plan), working closely with other Borough Departments and the Trails Advisory Commission. The Trail Plan is part of the Borough's Regional Comprehensive Plan and was created in 1985. The Trail Plan identifies many trails throughout the Borough that have high recreational value for the community and deserve some level of protection for public access. Trails in the Trail Plan cross many types of property and have varying degrees of public access. Public access is not guaranteed across all sections of trails in the Trail Plan. Trails in the Trail Plan receive protection across a piece a property if and when that property is ever subdivided via the Borough's Code of Ordinances, Title 17 "Subdivisions." Over the years, several new trails have been added to the Trail Plan. The latest trail, the Cranberry Trail, was added in 2006. Fairbanks residents can nominate new and existing trails to be added to the Trail Plan by making recommendations to the Trails Coordinator and the Trails Advisory Commission.

The Trails Advisory Commission (TAC) was established by Borough Ordinance in May of 1980. The responsibilities and duties of the Commission are to: inventory and review current trails and make recommendations concerning present and future needs, review state and borough land disposals in regard to trail needs and trail routing, provide a forum for citizen input in trail assessments and needs, review and recommend adjustments needed in the Comprehensive Recreational Trails Plan, and encourage voluntary incorporation of trails where needed in subdivision plans. The Commission is comprised of 15 borough atlarge residents who are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Borough Assembly. Applications are available on line and through the Mayor’s office and the Parks and Rec office. The Commission is required to meet quarterly, but generally meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Times, places and agendas are included in public notices and also on the Borough web site.

If you are interested in the Trail Plan, nominating a new trail, providing or securing a trail easement, or have other trailrelated interests, contact the Trails Coordinator: Bryant Wright, (907) 459-7401, bwright@fnsb.us

FAIRBANKS WINTER TRAILS CHALLENGE The Fairbanks Winter Trails Challenge is an all-ages, allabilities, outdoor scavenger hunt of epic proportions! The Trails Challenge is designed to get you out with your friends and family to explore our wonderful local trails, both new and familiar. Each winter season, Parks Department staff temporarily installs special signs in secret locations along a dozen or so local trails. When you find a sign, prove you made it by taking a “selfie” photo with the sign and posting it on social media with the hashtag “#FNSBTrails” or email your photo to Parks@fnsb.us. Participants who find AT LEAST TEN signs during the event can win prizes from local sponsors and the coveted Trailblazer Award. Participants under the age of ten can find at least five signs to win the Junior Trailblazer Award! Whether you find one or find them all, challenge yourself to get outside and enjoy nature!
