DRAMA THURSDAYS O

ne of the best things about being a Drama teacher is the generosity of colleagues. No other role pulls so greatly on the energies and enthusiasm of others. School productions are community endeavors - from the DT teachers who build sets to the PTA members who provide the refreshments, the Art teachers who paint the backdrops to the PE teachers who choreograph the dances. While often Drama departments are teams of just one or two, the Drama community is much more far reaching. One of the many brilliant aspects of what FOBISIA Drama can offer teachers is a wider network of engaged colleagues who share their passion for theatre. In the absence of face-to-face CPD opportunities, the FOBISIA Drama Committee put together a series of Zoombased sessions for teachers to share expertise, resources and ideas. FOBISIA Drama Thursdays are monthly workshops led by our members as an opportunity for us to remain connected with our international community. December’s session got the ball rolling with a focus on IGCSE Drama. Colleagues shared resources and ideas in response to exam board release materials. Teaching Online was the focus of January’s

session, hosted by Garden International School. A TeachMeet style session saw a wide range of initiatives, approaches and tech ideas shared in support of virtual learning. Claire Cockle, Head of Performing Arts at the British School of Kathmandu, Nepal shared what she found beneficial about the session: ‘Being able to listen and share ideas that people are experimenting with. It is not about having a polished product but instead how elements can be used and adapted over time to become relevant.’ February’s session was hosted by King Henry VIII School, Malaysia, alongside theatre company Parastoo. This was a practical session where attendees learnt about Parastoo’s important work with the refugee community and their approaches to Augsuto Boal’s Forum Theatre. British School Manila took the helm in March with a session on Primary Drama. There were a series of presentations on schemes of learning, professional theatre work and approaches to how Drama can support transition to secondary school. April’s session brought together a wide range of perspectives on School Productions. Hosted by Garden International School, discussions focused on approaches to the school show in a (post) COVID-19 world and CPD Digest, Volume 3 Issue 7, 3rd May 2021 I 7

how to make rehearsals safe and inclusive. The final two sessions of the academic year will be hosted by the Alice Smith School, Malaysia. The session in May has a TeachMeet style approach with colleagues presenting on a range of Theatre Practitioners from Brecht to Katie Mitchell, Grotowski to Stanislavski. June takes a more discursive approach, as colleagues share ways of engaging professional Theatre Companies through workshops and residency, face-toface and online models. We will round up the year with a focus on Diversifying the Canon of play texts Drama departments use in curriculum and productions. Whilst we might be physically distanced, Zoom and other new technologies allow us to remain connected. The FOBISIA Drama Committee would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all those who presented,

attended and shared so generously their resources, expertise and time. Holly Sullivan Head of Creative and Expressive Arts Faculty Associate Vice Principal, Secondary Campus The Alice Smith School Student Events Coordinator in FOBISIA Drama Committee

JAWS

WHAT IS JAWS? A FOBISIA Jobs Alike Workshop (JAWS) is an opportunity for professionals in similar fields to share knowledge and good practice in a costeffective and practical way. What is expected of JAWS participants? Participants should expect to be asked to present a workshop and are encouraged to do so Participants can co-host workshops All participants should be actively involved in the planning of the agenda and be provided with opportunities to contribute.

For more information, please read the CPD Handbook here CPD Digest, Volume 3 Issue 7, 3rd May 2021 I 11

JAWS

Interested in participating in a JAWS event?

Session Ideas for a Job-Alike Workshop Running a session at a Job-Alike Workshop does not need to be a daunting experience - here are just a few ideas that can work really well Carousel of Learning Activities Use a variety of activities to generate discussion and collect ideas on a topic. This can start with an open question which everyone contributes ideas to. “Slap Down” or Little Gems Participants each bring an idea or strategy that they have used that works in the classroom or within their role and have 3 minutes to share it with the group. Role-play or Scenarios Create a scenario that can be role-played or discussed to generate ideas on a topic. Open Questions/Key Questions Begin the session with a question that generates a discussion, ensuring that everyone is heard. Question(s) may be submitted in advance. “Top 3” Ideas: Ask participants to bring their own “top 3’ resources/apps/websites etc. to be shared with the group. This will generate lots of discussion and encourages participants to share good practice. Twitter Have a live Twitter feed during presentations. This will allow capture of those ‘golden nuggets’ generated in the session. Use ‘Storify’ to create a ‘take-away’ of the Twitter feed. Clips Start a session with a video clip, research, photos or quotes to stimulate topic discussion.
