Enhancing Curriculum Design & Pedagogy eJAWS 22nd October 2021 Discovery Bay International School
D
iscovery Bay International School (DBIS), Hong Kong hosted an ‘Enhancing Curriculum Design & Pedagogy’ e-JAWS on Friday 22nd October, bringing together colleagues from seven FOBISIA schools.
The day saw DBIS present three stories from their journey of curriculum development and one from Shrewsbury International School Bangkok. The keynote presentation was facilitated by Russell Moriarty, DBIS’s Whole School Lead for Curriculum Development and Concept Based Curriculum Instruction Trainer and Presenter. The session explored the power of learning through concepts and how using an inductive inquiry approach to learning, students can connect to big ideas and co-construct conceptual understandings that can provide opportunities for learning transfer and purposeful action. This session showed how any curriculum can be conceptualized and was underpinned by the work of Dr H Lynn Erickson and Dr Lois A Lanning on Concept Based Curriculum and Instruction.
CPD Digest, Volume 4 Issue 4, 26th November 2021 | 5
The Head, Hannah Cole and Deputy Head, Lynsey Coote of the Early Years at DBIS explored the journey of taking a play based approach to learning from Early Years into Key Stage 1. This explored how the philosophy of play and inquiry through a Reggio Emilia approach can enhance and transform the pedagogy of Key Stage 1.
6 | CPD Digest, Volume 4 Issue 4, 26th November 2021
The day continued with James Nash, Junior Science Lead at Shrewsbury, Bangkok presenting a very thought provoking session on the themes of scientific research skills and the importance of vertical articulation along with, selecting scientific materials that reflect diversity. The day ended with Angela Moriarty, Head of Learning Technologies at DBIS sharing an overview of the bespoke concept based curriculum designed by the Learning Technologies team. This session went on to share examples of how careful consideration of the conceptual lens and driving concepts, combined with coaching conversations with class teachers can allow for greater opportunities for the transfer of conceptual understandings.

EYFS Curriculum Updates: Adapting Internationally & Impact on Practice eJAWS Bangkok International Preparatory & Secondary School 9th November 2021 Bangkok Prep was delighted to host the EYFS Curriculum Updates: Adapting Internationally & Impact on Practice (eJAWS) on Tuesday 9th November 2021. With the curriculum reforms and changes to the UK guidance and statutory framework, alongside being based in an international setting this was a fantastic opportunity for FOBISIA colleagues to network and share our experiences and practice. It was great to hear that many schools are sharing the same journey and discussions about assessment and monitoring also played a key role in the session. As a school we shared and demonstrated the process we have undergone to adapt and adopt the curriculum reforms and the impact this is now having on our planning, provision and assessment.
During the morning we also discussed Early Years online provision and heard from different schools about how they approached this phase of learning and what went well. We looked at how our provision had developed, grown and organically changed to meet the needs of our young learners and how parent feedback was also vital to the developments we made. Many schools also highlighted similar experiences and challenges too. In small groups attendees shared their own schools provision and lots of positive ideas were spoken about. We as a school, were also really interested to learn about active play sessions online and are eager to adapt this to our current Hybrid Model.
8 | CPD Digest, Volume 4 Issue 4, 26th November 2021
It was also wonderful to discuss the changes to Phonics provision in the UK and how this too may impact our practices internationally. We reflected on how the validation process will affect our provision and how schools may need to review their Phonics practice in line with the UK updates. To support our focus upon Phonics we also shared our strategies for supporting speech and language. It was interesting to hear that many schools use similar approaches and also hear about others experiences of different strategies and assessments. We heard from other school’s on the positive ways they support speech and language as a whole school model and the training they have provided across the school to facilitate this. Several colleagues also shared suggested training and strategies for speech and language support.
Overall, there was a great deal of positive practise, expertise and experience shared and attendees have commented on the informative and reflective nature of all the sessions. It was also fantastic to have so many schools and attendees networking and connecting with each other.
