Teaching Assistants: Maximising Your Impact! Dulwich College (Singapore) 28 March 2022
On Monday 28th March, Dulwich College (Singapore) were delighted to host the FOBISIA E-Jaws Conference for Teaching Assistants and those who lead teams of TAs. With twelve engaging workshops from teachers and TAs, two exciting keynotes from Eva Cartwright and around 200 enthusiastic participants from FOBISIA schools across Asia, the event was a great success. The primary focus of the event was on sharing good practice and helpful advice for enabling Teaching Assistants to make a positive difference to the students in their schools. Key themes from the workshops included supporting student independence, EAL and AEN support, phonics, wellbeing, display boards and supporting TA professional development pathways. Each of the presenters shared helpful strategies from their experiences in their own schools and useful take-away advice that can be adopted by colleagues in other FOBISIA schools. In the afternoon, Eva Cartwright from the TA College delivered two keynote presentations. These were well attended and feedback was positive. Eva’s first keynote presentation was aimed at developing strategies for TAs to effectively make an impact during learning. There were many helpful strategies and tips for participants to go back to their schools and start implementing straight away. Eva’s second keynote explored ways for teachers and TAs to effectively collaborate and work alongside each other. A key message was that strong teacher and TA relationships make a direct impact on teaching and learning, raise professionalism and boost confidence.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING EJAWSCONFERENCE Garden International School 29 April 2022
At the end of April, Garden International School hosted an eJAWS Conference on all things SEL (Social and Emotional Learning). Ellen Mahoney, of Sea Change Mentoring, and Amy Marsh, from Garden International School, delivered an insightful keynote speech detailing the importance of developing adult SEL skills to ensure that the behaviours we seek to develop in young people are modelled by the adults they interact with. Presenters from across Asia then shared their experiences and research into supporting both adults and students in developing self-awareness, selfmanagement, social awareness and perspective-taking, and relationship skills. As we seek to return to pre-pandemic routines in schools across the world, SEL has become more prominent than ever, and as such the conference was well attended by schools across the region.

Assessment in Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 Dulwich College (Singapore) 29 April 2022
On 29th April over thirty teachers from across the FOBISIA group gathered online for a morning of workshops around the theme of Assessment in Key Stage 1, 2 and 3. Given the move away from National Curriculum Assessment levels a few years back, this was a timely opportunity for schools to share how they have developed their own assessment models to suit their context. Mike Smith, Deputy Head of the Junior School at Dulwich College (Singapore), opened the e-JAWS with his keynote speech on ‘Assessment for what we believe in’. This set the tone for a morning of reflection and discussion as we were challenged to consider how closely our own assessment frameworks align with what we believe is important in our curriculum. Delegates then had a choice of twelve different workshops to attend over the course of the morning, ranging from formative assessment tools; summative reporting; tracking approaches to learning; and empowering students through self-reflection and self-assessment.
Each facilitator was able to share their own school’s journey in implementing different assessment frameworks and strategies, highlighting successes and the potential barriers to consider. In addition, there was a healthy dose of collaboration with effective use of breakout rooms, mentimeters and padlets to share opinions and examples of good teaching practice. Thank you to the DCSG PLD team for organising and hosting this E- JAWs and to our workshop facilitators for chairing such engaging, thought-provoking sessions. Supporting Gifted and Talented Students in Humanities and Social Sciences: A Case Study approach Shenzhen College of International Education 19 May 2022
On Thursday 19th May, the Humanities and Social Sciences faculty from Shenzhen College of International Education successfully hosted our first online EJAWS. The theme was Supporting Gifted and Talented Students in Humanities and Social Sciences: A Case Study Approach. We were very proud to be part of this excellent event which had been planned by Chloe Tan, the Head of A level Economics. Previously Richard had hosted the first face to face JAWS on Active Learning in Humanities in May 2017. What is an eJAWS? Job Alike Workshops (JAWS) are professional development and networking events, specific to The Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) an organisation which SCIE are actively involved with. An eJAWS is an online version. Overview of Supporting Gifted and Talented Students in Humanities and Social Sciences: A Case Study Approach We have had 25 delegates/teachers working in international schools signed up for the eJAWS from Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Beijing. Representatives from Discovery Bay School Hong Kong and from Kellett School Hong Kong who presented case studies as part of the workshop. Richard gave brief introduction about the Gifted and Talented (GT) program under SCIE context. Chloe shared the successful practice of how GT classes are developed as curriculum and SCA (Super Curricular Activities) such as the Economist Reading

Club. Two student members, Amaris and Tony from the Economist Reading Club shared how the opportunities of reading together have enhanced their understanding and how they have been guided to research in the areas they have an enthusiasm. A previous report on the Economist Reading Club can be checked here. On the first case study, Tom, Carolina and Mark from Kellet School (HK) shared a set of strategies implemented in their school in stretching the interest of more able students implemented by Economics and Business Studies teachers. We have been very impressed by their Young Economist Society where essay contests, guest speaker programmes, discussions and blogs are combined together. The second case study was presented by Helen from Discovery Bay International School in Hong Kong on how to identify GT students from early stage. The cross check register, identification from data and checklist of behaviours can be adapted by international schools with all age group students. Then Angelien and Roche from SCIE demonstrated the use of simulations such as Nearpod and Econland in promoting the interest of more able students within classroom, from which students can enjoy competitions in class.

With the successful practice from the GT classes, Richard presented a case study on how the Gifted and Talented programme has developed from when Richard first set it up in 2015 which had a class of multiple different subjects to this year having specific programmes to match Humanities subjects at Oxbridge, for example the Education tutorial group. It was also lovely that both current SCIE students and alumni who have benefited from the Gifted and Talented programme shared their reflections of how the support led to successful outcomes. For example, current SCIE student Kathy Liu, who will study Industrial and Labor Realtions at Cornell University commented “Without the G&T lessons, I would not be able to extend my passion towards humanity to social justice, labor rights and gender equality, which eventually led me to Cornell” and current Oxford University Law student Tina Chen commented: “The topics covered by the GT classes go beyond the A Level syllabus and are really interesting; I can still remember our discussion on moral dilemma problems and modern arts.” Feedback from delegates regarding the sessions they are highly impressed by: “I’ve taken a wealth of ideas from all of them, and throughout been mulling over how I can begin to trial and implement some of the strategies shared, such as GT critical thinking 11 | CPD Digest, Volume 4 Issue 7, 10 June 2022 11 | CPD Digest, Volume 4 Issue 8, 10 June 2022

clubs /competition clubs / using online simulations (as I spend a lot of time writing simulations within my subject area) / extending the Passion Projects that we’ve begun at my school and giving them a bigger platform” “They were all fantastic. As Head of Economics the Reading Club workshop is something we will be looking into. From the point of view of moving into a new role next year as Head of Year12, the workshops on Oxbridge prep were very informative.” “Simulations.”
`
“I think each workshop brought its own unique strategies and key takeaways.” “Q&A with regard to the GT programme in the host school” “The first part discussing the formal identification of the more able and giving actual timetabled lessons.” We are delighted to announce that Physics, Further Maths and Geography all past the bidding process to host a EJAWS for 2022/2023. I look forward to these excellent professional development opportunities for staff at SCIE. Effective Students Leadership in schools eJAWS The International School @ ParkCity 20 May 2022
Building on the fantastic FOBISIA Student Leadership eJAWS event that was hosted in October 2021. This gathering of teachers and support staff, who have a passion for developing student leadership, was an opportunity to reflect on the year gone by and provide headspace and platforms for delegates to look forward to the upcoming academic year. The opening session encouraged participants to think strategically about designing, developing, implementing and evaluating our student leadership programmes and reviewing the cultures in our schools. Of the 14 schools in attendance, half of these were represented by outstanding Workshop Leads, who led sessions based on student voice, training for student leaders and the qualities we are looking to develop in young people. Further to the traditional workshop sessions, The International School@ParkCity and The Alice Smith School led Student Focus sessions where young people presented their student leadership experiences and delegates spent time thinking about these and discussing how this might look or develop in their context.

As always the FOBISIA community is very interconnected and many of the Teachers discovered they had past, present or future colleagues in common and were soon like old friends! The afternoon saw participants participate in round table discussions based upon contemporary topics such as: •
Gender and Inclusion in Sport
