Welcome to the first edition of FOBISIA’s quarterly sports news bulletin - the FOBISIA Sports Newsletter! The purpose of this newsletter is to keep you informed of what’s going on within the FOBISIA organisation. We hope to share action research from Member Schools, details of CPD opportunities and keep you abreast of competition dates and details as we head through a busy year of sport. It’s important to outline that this newsletter is a collaborative effort and it is this collaboration between the FOBISIA HoPE Executive and our 57 Member Schools, that will determine how informative and relevant it is for all our members. Member Schools are welcome and very much encouraged to contribute to each edition to share relevant news and good practice. For further details and how and to make a contribution to this publication, please please email me at lkeens@britishschoolmanila.org, or complete the Google Form here.

Teaching Tactics BIS Learning Skills by Philip Husband

BIS HCMC, as with most international schools, has an Aide Memoire and an ethos of what teachers and students should be aspiring to portray in lessons. Ultimately, to shape the sort of person or learner that the school wish the student to be by the time they leave the school.

Primary PE Selection by Andrew Tatam

Welcome to the first edition of the FOBISIA Sports Newsletter. I am going to kick-start with an example of how we pick our teams for FOBISIA at Bangkok Patana School. I began my FOBISIA journey 13 years ago at the most venerable ABC International School in Vietnam where my selection policy will resonate with many smaller school readers. I selected my team from PE lessons and then went down the list from parents’ indifference to those who could afford to attend. Having moved to Bangkok Patana School and a “big” school, selection has remained a prickly subject and one that continues to evolve year on year. Here is a basic schedule that we currently follow with a 4 Block ECA programme that has recently changed to a dual 2.30 to 3.30pm followed by a 3.30 to 4.30pm ECA (Extra Curricular Activities) programme. Our Primary PE philosophy is “Sport for all, striving for excellence” which we try to live up to, in welcoming all to our ECAs, where possible. Our selection policy for trying out is as follows, but in general number terms, we range from 10 to 30 (Y5 Boys) trying out for any particular team and age range. ECA Block 1 = No FOBISIA requirements

The school, and even more so the PE department, didn’t want this ethos to simply be included in the school prospectus, churned out each year during new parent’s introductory evenings and displayed on classroom walls and not used or referred to. If we have one, let’s use it to the benefit of ourselves and the students. Therefore, over time, the BIS Learning Skills Lotus was developed and refined and are now practically used in lessons so that students are actively taught and learn important life skills that should be demonstrated by the model BIS student. ECA Block 2 (beginning mid-November) = Monday football 3.30 to 4.30pm (joining after Primary performance i.e. Shrek this year, where relevant) and Tuesday Tee ball from 2.30pm until 4.30pm are compulsory. We hold a non-Tiger Shark FOBISIA swim session on a Wednesday and a Y4 to 6 athletics ECA on a Thursday, which are both optional. For the full article, please click below for more info... MORE INFO
