DRAMA JAWS

Kate Edwards, Head of Drama, Tanglin Trust School Gecko Theatre, Generosity and the Globe Twenty-eight Drama teachers from over twenty schools came together at Tanglin Trust School for the FOBISIA Drama JAWS from the 13th- 15th September 2019 in Singapore. The first day was spent with Kenny and Vanessa from Gecko Theatre exploring devising techniques. This rather demanding day for a bunch of teachers, many over a certain age, started with games and ensemble techniques, moving through simple physical exercises onto some incredible devised scenes that contrasted the ordinary and extraordinary.

The group of drama teachers (the collective noun I have learnt for this particular meeting is a ‘flounce’) learnt a host of new ensemble techniques to take back with them, straight into the classroom. These shared experiences resulted in vast amounts of pedagogical reflections, which started by analysing the use of play and generosity in drama. Gecko theatre place less focus initially on narrative structure and focus instead on playing, which frees up creativity when devising. Changing the term ‘warm-up’ to ‘preparation’ was explored, as it additionally includes the idea of being open-hearted, as well as being physically and mentally ready for work. This open-hearted feeling encourages generosity within groups, increasing the feeling of safety for students and reduces the judgement felt, being able to trust the class in order to feel comfortable enough to take risks in their work. There were many aching bodies apparent the following morning and a

CPD Digest

definite decrease in physical readiness was visibly present. However, there was no rest for the group and over the next two days different teachers took the lead, generously sharing their work and led workshops on:

• Stage combat • Risk taking and working with introverts • Structuring learning for deeper understanding and more creative outcomes - focusing on puppetry • Shakespeare hooks • The Joy of Plays • Devising Processes- Adapting and Responding to Written Stimuli • FUN-damentals of Drama: making theory fun During the JAWS, the two FOBISIA Drama festivals taking place this year were launched. The High School All the World’s a Stage Festival, being hosted by Regent’s International School, Bangkok Thailand from 26th to 29th February 2020 and the Middle School Festival entitled Children for Change held at the British School Jakarta, from the 13th – 16th May 2020 which whetted the groups’ appetite for an exciting festival year. Fortuitously the JAWS coincided with The Globe Theatre’s productions of The Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night which provided some welcome physical and comic relief in the afternoons. A huge thank you to those teachers who attended and gave so much and to those who generously shared their work thorough taking such inspirational workshops.

Early Years Foundation Stage JAWS

Aidan Stallwood, Deputy Head, Taipei European School, British Primary Section

On a wet and windy Friday 27th September 2019, a number of Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) colleagues from a range of FOBISIA member schools across Asia gathered at Taipei European School in Taiwan for the EYFS JAWS. Joined by the members of our school we had over 20 people involved including our special guest, Jan Dubiel.

What followed was a series of different presentations, workshops and discussions covering a wide range of aspects pertinent to EYFS, including a workshop offering essential pre-reading skills, which provided delegates with knowledge and ideas of how to help children develop a love of reading, and a rich literacy early years foundation - which can be taken back by the visitors and used when presenting to their parents on reading. As well as that, we heard Jan Dubiels excellent presentation on supporting language development, especially for children learning EAL, which encourages communication, collaboration among children from diverse linguistic backgrounds, he offered lots of practical ideas and examples.

4

The sessions were broken up by a tour of our large Primary years campus lead by Reception and Year 1 children - who clearly had an understanding of what was most important for any visitor to see at our school! Also we had a session focused on the ‘Otherness of ECE’ and the

CPD Digest

implications for practice and policy. By the end of the day there was a chance to reflect, which led to some thought provoking discussion around play. Then it was off to a traditional Chinese meal at a lovely local restaurant allowing an opportunity for delegates to get to know each other a little better, build connections for the future and sample some of the delicious cuisine Taiwan has to offer.

By day two, we were well acquainted and jumped straight in with a rather engaging session on developing the use of an enabling environment, which encourages student agency, independence and interdependence. Real life examples which demonstrated excellence were shared, and further discussion was had on extending students learning and thinking in the Early Years. The afternoon was a more active one, where we got hands on in a workshop for developing muscles for writing; before hearing about fostering student agency in an EYFS environment through the use of some inspirational examples.

We couldn’t let our guests leave empty handed, so along with their FOBISIA certificates we waved them off with some traditional tea and the classic Taiwanese pineapple cakes, with the aim being we continue to stay in touch as a group, build on the bonds made and look to share valuable ideas and practice as we each work on those next steps gathered over the weekend.
