Mother Tongue JAWS
YinNan Zhang, Mother Tongue Coordinator at Tanglin Trust School Tanglin were delighted to host the first Mother Tongue Jobs Alike Workshop, entitled ‘Mother Tongue Programme in International Schools’ in May 2019. 17 enthusiastic colleagues in similar roles across ten different schools in four countries gathered to share their experiences and practice in this exciting and upcoming field. Heads of Languages and Mother Tongue Coordinators shared the Mother Tongue programme models in their schools and participants discussed the successes and struggles we faced in running the programme in the region.
Discussions on topics like diagnostics, IB pathway, Mother Tongue programme continuity, differentiation in the classroom and raising the profile of Mother Tongue were very inspiring and fruitful. We were very lucky to have two IB School Supported Self Taught (SSST) workshop leaders, Ronny Mintjens and Laurie Kraaijeveld talking about managing the SSST team and a new mobile app for SSST.
CPD Digest
Everyone participated and shared their ideas; there was a fantastic feeling of collaboration and being supported as a ‘minority group’ in the Languages Department in schools. Participants were flexible and we had structured formal and open informal discussions about any concerns. Throughout the two days valuable connections were made to ensure that we could continue to share and keep in touch.
A big thank you to our colleagues for being so open, positive and enthusiastic. It was truly a great and enjoyable experience. The feedback from the Faculty Leader of Whole School World Languages in one of the schools that we received exemplified the Workshop:
“(The new Head of World Languages) found it very useful indeed, and she received a very warm, hospitable welcome. It was an excellent CPD and it was really worth it.”
