FOBISIA Shares - Teaching Community Conference Tim Lamb, Deputy Principal, St. Christopher’s International Primary School On Thursday 14th November the St. Christopher’s School (SCIPS) community were very pleased to welcome 160 teachers to Penang for the 3rd Biennial FOBISIA Teaching Community Conference. With a theme of FOBISIA Shares, the emphasis was on teachers coming together to share, not only their practice in schools but also their experiences of international teaching. Alongside the teachers we were extremely fortunate to have the experience of our wellrenowned keynote speakers; Ross Morrison McGill (Teacher Toolkit) and Lisa Jane Ashes (Veema Education).

However, with these events, it is the memories that we wish people to take away. With plenty of opportunities for networking and socialising; a cocktail reception at The Blue Mansion and an evening dinner at The Eastern & Oriental Hotel, teachers were able to connect and most importantly share their relevant experiences. Some of the recent feedback comments we believe are a true reflection of our school and how we are viewed in the FOBISIA Community and beyond! Here are some feedback from our participants:“This was my first time and I was truly blown by the warm and friendly atmosphere, the quality workshops. The Keynote speakers and presenters shared their rich experience which enhanced our knowledge. The organising committee and St. Christopher’s staff were simply amazing.”

“I was struck by the CARE shown to delegates. Nothing appeared rushed/urgent/panicked. I honestly felt like I was visiting my family. I cannot thank you enough.”

This year was also a ‘first’ for the conference as we were able to invite Teaching Assistants to join and benefit from the knowledge of Eva Cartwright from The TA College in the UK; an amazing opportunity and one that the SCIPS TA’s delighted in!

6

With over 60 teachers also presenting workshops, the theme of sharing was clearly evident and a real advert for the quality of staff and knowledge there is within the Federation. We were particularly proud to have three staff from SCIPS running workshops as well as a number of other SCIPS teachers chairing discussion groups. CPD Digest

Sharing is Caring

Paul Wilkinson, Primary Teacher, Y5, Garden International School, Sathorn

‘Sharing is caring’ was the theme of guest presenter Ross McGill’s keynote presentation at the recent FOBISIA Teaching Community Conference in Penang, where over 160 teachers and leaders from international schools across Asia gathered to discuss and discover new and innovative teaching strategies. Set in the beautiful surroundings of St Christopher’s International Primary School, the ‘FOBISIA Shares’ event offered a packed programme of workshops featuring a host of exciting ideas and examples of best practice.

of Plan, Mark Teach. “There has to be a regular sharing of ideas between teachers. It gives everybody a voice and validates their experience.” In his workshop, Ross championed a pragmatic approach to teaching where old habits were challenged and teachers could develop a more efficient and effective practice. “This was the most hospitable and friendly conference I’ve been too,” he added. “ It was an amazing experience and I consider myself very fortunate to have been invited.”

With evidence informed research prompting many schools to reassess fundamentals such as curriculum and assessment, this lively community event positively thrived with discussion and insight into how we can enrich and deepen teaching and learning. Influential edu-blogger, Ross McGill, spoke passionately about the need for schools to create a supportive culture that factored in workload on teacher well-being and guaranteed continuing professional development. 8

“Teaching is a team sport,” said Ross, author CPD Digest

Cont... This sentiment was shared by a great many of the delegates, who jetted back to their schools armed with copious notes, fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose.

“It was an inspirational experience and a fantastic opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas with so many other teachers,” said Harvey Taylor, who teaches Business Studies and Computer Science at Garden International School, Bangkok. “There was so much to take back to share with my colleagues.”

Reflecting on the conference, FOBISIA CEO, John Jones added, “Congratulations to everyone that contributed to the success of the 2019 FOBISIA Teaching Community Conference, in particular, St. Christopher’s International Primary School for being such wonderful hosts. This was the highest number of participants that we have had, which reflects the popularity of this event. The Keynote presenters were superb and they were well complemented by excellent workshops that appealed to the breadth of experienced participants. I was delighted to see the inclusion of Teaching Assistants and having read the feedback, maybe we should look at making this an annual event? I would like to thank everyone for your commitment in making this professional development opportunity an outstanding and inspiring success.” For shared resource and photos click on the Resource Center and log into the Community Forum.
