Reflections from the EAL JAWS
Shane Leaning, EAL Teaching Fellow, Nord Anglia Eduction The British School of Guangzhou Participants from across the region came together this January for this year’s EAL JAWS hosted at The British School of Guangzhou, China. EAL (English as an Additional Language) is a priority across all of our schools and it was fantastic to collaborate and share ideas for improving EAL provision across our settings. We all enjoyed sharing through workshops, a student panel, ‘Speed-Geeking’ and ‘Un-conferencing’, as well as informal sharing at the conference social.
throughout the conference. Many teachers went away with next steps for developing cultures within their own schools to become more language inclusive.
Lesson Planning Of course, most conversation that took place was about how to plan appropriate, challenging and stimulating lessons for EAL learners. Many of our workshops tackled how to do this including Anne Winter’s presentation on Vibrant Vocabulary. Assessment was also a hot topic. Furthermore, teachers went away with fantastic, ready-to-use strategies in our ‘Speed-Geeking’ session.
It was wonderful to see that 100% of participants rated the EAL JAWS as excellent. Here are a couple of quotes from attendees:
At the start of the conference, attendees identified three shared priorities across our schools. 1. Inclusion & Wellbeing 2. Assessment 3. Curriculum Design
These priorities formed the basis of our conversations over the two days. In addition, here are three of the many themes participants reflected on during the conference.
Scaffolding and Displays Lots of discussion happened around creating scaffolding for learning. Most centred around how to use classroom displays correctly. Daniel Leary presented an insightful session on active classroom displays and many participants have already implemented these new strategies into their classrooms. Translanguaging Two of our workshops were all about utilizing home languages effectively for learning in the classroom. These both ignited discussions

“The planning and hosting by BSG was exemplary. The JAWS provided a great opportunity for collaborative work with other FOBISIA schools.”
“Colleagues that attended the JAWS together were all so humble and opened to share! We had a great time listening to each other and that really gave me a lot of insights and ideas.” Thanks to everyone who took part and I look forward to collaborating with you all at the next EAL JAWS!
